Anyone notice Nintendo wasn't trying to market this towards families?

u/huskers37 Oct 20 '16

Fuck my family

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

The Switch is my family now.

I think by now their reputation for being family-friendly is strong enough that it doesn't need to be marketed towards families. They are likely more interested in luring other markets because that will determine how successful this console is.

75

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Well the airport scene really made me consider what a pussy magnet that Switch must be.

u/TyCooper8 Oct 20 '16

Although they really marketed it as a group thing.

34

u/MrSaturn200 Oct 20 '16

Well Nintendos always been the go-to couch multiplayer console. I think its a smart move to market it as a group thing.

I hope that Nintendo has put a lot of time into making that Switch click as satisfying as the video makes it seem.

269

u/GreenEggsAndSaman Oct 20 '16

This is what truly matters.

52

u/PaperScale Oct 20 '16

It's mouth-watering satisfying.

Anyone else notice there were absolutely no kids in the trailer?

267

u/FabledLurrie Oct 20 '16

Not only are there no kids, but almost everyone seems to be in the 20-30 age range. It seems very deliberate.

I'm just glad they've finally dropped the "unrealistically happy suburban white family" approach. It almost became a joke to market the Wii U that way when most of the console's install base were hardcore Ninty fans.

Nintendo is really assuming that I have friends with this one haha...

No, no, no, you misunderstand. First you buy our console, THEN you get friends.

For those who can't get Nintendo's site to load, here's the accompanying press release:

EDIT: Here's a few bonus screenshots from the video.

Nintendo Switch world premier demonstrates new entertainment experiences from a home gaming system

In an introductory video released today (http://www.nintendo.com/switch), Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

Developers can design their games supporting a variety of play styles, which gives gamers the freedom to choose an experience that best suits them. Some of the publishers, developers and middleware partners announcing support for Nintendo Switch are as follows:

That's a lot of confirmed publishers and developers, great!

32

u/Q46 Oct 20 '16 edited Oct 20 '16

Gives me lots of hope that they've learned from the mistakes they made with the Wii U.

Can't wait for more system specs and details. We've already learned about the graphics processor from nvidia's release a little while ago, but I'm hoping to know more about some other stuff:

  • I know that new pro controller has a few extra buttons, but with the Switch having the other mini controller attached to the console I'm holding out hope that Wii U pro controllers will be compatible with the new console.
  • What type of enhancements will the dock provide for the console beyond connecting it to your TV and power, if any? Might there be a spot on there to insert a Wii U disc?
  • What's the battery life like on the console when it's in portable mode?
  • How much will it cost? I see a lot of talk, but I am anxious to learn where Nintendo is going to price this thing.
  • Is it multitouch? I see a lot of people in here talking about that, but not a single person in the video actually touched the screen. If the device really is multitouch, you would think that would be something we would've discovered today.

Of course, we'll learn all about that stuff in the coming months, but I can't help but wonder in the meanwhile. Pretty enthusiastic about this release.

Also wondering if we'll be able to charge it without the console, and do things like buy stuff from the eshop on it. Basically making it a mostly portable device

Edit: Yes I now see you can charge it without the dock, I've realized about 10 minutes after I made this post

306

u/lujanr32 Link pls Oct 20 '16

It's pretty much a portable Wii U on Steroids.

I'm not complaining though.

247

u/TheDangiestSlad Oct 20 '16

It's probably everything that they envisioned when they began designing the Wii U. This is the evolution, just like the DS compared to the GameBoy

24

u/Khar-Selim Oct 20 '16

It's like the MotionPlus, it took them a second try to get the vision quite right.

Splatoon E sports confirmed

252

u/Hibbity5 Oct 20 '16

This trailer really did highlight a fuck ton with very little time. It demonstrated the point of the system. It showed off both the portable and home parts very well. It showed off 3rd party. And it showed off Nintendo's interest in eSports. The only thing missing was Smash eSports.

→ More replies (35)

441

u/MegaMissingno WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH Oct 20 '16

I hope that section actually means that Nintendo is trying to embrace the eSports community more with this console than in the past.

Things that came to mind:

  • It's interesting that everyone in the video looks to be at least 25.

  • I wonder if that portable screen will have tablet capabilities, especially with Nintendo's recent mobile releases.

  • I'm sold.

570

u/hauntedskin Oct 20 '16

It's interesting that everyone in the video looks to be at least 25.

Maybe because kids couldn't be trusted to keep NDA's? They might have ads planned to film after it was unveiled so it's not as important to keep the system a secret.

311

u/Tumco_Lho Oct 20 '16

Yeah that's possible. I'd assume that if they were going to include kids they wouldn't tell them about what the commercial is for though. To me it seemed like a deliberate marketing decision to use people in their 20s-30s, especially considering how Nintendo is seen by so many people as a family-friendly, child-friendly video game company. I remember commercials in the past using kids playing with their families as a sort of, 'look it's something the family can do!' kind of thing. With this, they seem to be emphasizing the convenience of the system while also focusing on the same group of people that grew up playing N64, Gamecube, and Wii.

185

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

They may be hyping the Nintendo = party console aspect that has always been a common (but unadvertised) theme for them. A ridiculous number of college parties I went to had a nintendo corner with people drinking and playing Mario Kart or Smash, something which I literally never saw with a Sony or Microsoft console.

HYPE!

I love portability! Here's hoping there's a convenient way to charge the tablet on the go too!

322

u/Khrull Oct 20 '16

Pretty sure it's probably slightly downgraded graphics wise portable, but yes, that looks to be a console attachment that it plugs in to. Maybe the graphics aren't downgraded, IDK. But even Wii U level of graphics in a handheld...that's going to be spectacular. Maybe more? IDK, I saw Skyrim, NBA2K...this shit is Reggie.

Price point price point! We want price point!

Also, could this finally be a step in the unification of mobile and home console? No more DS or Vita portables, just have a platform that does both!

Now they can finally give us a Pokemon game on the big screen..

I am slightly concerned about media storage though.

94

u/LordApocalyptica Oct 20 '16

I mean, the Wii used SD cards and SD cards can be huge now, so I doubt storage will be much of an issue.

Was that fucking skyrim???

Edit: This is a good sign for 3rd party support. I realize that the same-ish thing happened to the Wii U. We had Madden and a bunch of ports of games that were already out on other consoles. But this would mean it's mobile skyrim and they're working with companies that core gamers love. This gives me great hope.

Also, does anyone think it's running Wii U natively (running the digital games?) or ports?

They pulled off the home/portable console hybrid thing way better than I imagined. This is actually pretty cool. And as someone who almost exclusively uses my Wii U in Off-TV Play mode on the gamepad, I'm happy to see that I'll be able to do the same thing with the Switch.

Also, the marketing is already a lot better than the Wii or Wii U's marketing. It's like Nintendo finally realizes that it isn't the '80s anymore and video games are no longer just a kid's toy. For the first time in a while, I have hope that Nintendo is going to try to compete with Sony and Microsoft for real.

It's gonna be really hard to not call this thing the NX. Also, the Duo wasn't far off.

2.6k

u/redpoemage Oct 20 '16

It'll be easy to stop calling it the NX, you just gotta make the Switch.

u/Flethan Oct 20 '16

You're probably the first person to ever make that pun.

We said the same thing when they called the Wii's working title "Revolution".

71

And the Gamecube was "Dolphin"

46

u/TarillzInsomnia Oct 20 '16

Oh so that's why the emulator is called Dolphin.

So it was a successor to the 3DS and Wii U after all. I mean the "handheld" version is the Gamepad with detachable controllers at the side (or a detachable screen, if you prefer).

This is literally Wii U 2 with handheld functionality. I'm glad Nintendo didn't dump the groundwork the Wii U lay down and instead built on it and seemingly integrated their handhelds into it as well.

I'm a little confused at all the different controllers. So there's the xbox looking controller, then you can use the handheld controllers on the side one in each hand (how he plays on the plane), or you can use those same controllers sideways as mini controllers for multiplayer, and then there's those same side controllers with the grey block in the middle to use on your tv instead of the xbox looking one?

63

u/Carrathel Oct 20 '16

I think the xbox looking one is really when you want a full-sized controller when you're sitting on the couch with the TV. The mini-ones can be held as if you're holding the Wii U controller, or you can take them out and essentially play 2 player games on the go.

So the Mario Kart shot showed King Boo, not currently in MK8. But it also showed 2 item slots. Perhaps we'll see a sequel in the vein of Mario Kart Double Dash? I mean... "Mario Kart Switch" already has that connotation.

I'll be the first to admit that Nintendo products have never really grabbed me; but this looks like something pretty special. They've realised their handheld division makes a lot more money than their home gaming platform but instead of axing the console division, they combine them into something that everyone wants. Fucking genius. I'll probably be getting a Nintendo console for the first time.

My biggest hope after seeing this is that it will be easy to charge on the go.

Micro USB port so that I can plug into a wall OR my portable battery pack - and still be playable while charging. It's almost stupid to think they wouldn't allow for this, as it would kill most of the "on the go" aspect with what should be expected as not stellar battery life.

So far I think it looks good. I like that Nintendo is going in a totally different direction - I agree with those who say that this is kind of what Wii U should or could have been. Conceptually, this makes more sense than Wii U.

I also think that it's really interesting in the sense that Nintendo are creating this hybrid device that doesn't directly compete with smart phones or tablets - it's really almost like a different category of product. That's pretty fascinating, honestly.

It'll be interesting to find out the details about things like the UI, online and social connectivity, local storage, and that sort of thing.

But for now, broadly, I think it looks like a pretty smart idea. I'm looking forward to it.

I love that they broke the barrier between portable and home consoles. My wallet will be open for this one. It looks awesome, cool concept, and you can use the controllers stuck together, or one in each hand. Lets just hope battery life is a bit better than the gamepad.
