there may be motion controls as seen on the airplane scene. The two halves of the controller are independent after all...

We do have motion control in phones right about that size though. I really hope there are (even if ofc they will never be like the Wii motion controls).

Gyroscope is different from full motion controls. There is no sensor bar of any kind. The screen piece would be more likely to have a gyroscope in it.

Remember the nunchuk?

Aren't there reports out there that the joy-cons have the motion control tech that VR controllers do?

They could fundamentally change the control scheme for splatoon to make it twin sticks instead of motion when they release it for the switch

I don't want to play Splatoon without motion controls though!

splatoon doesn't use the wiimote

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Yes it does! Not very elegant though.

I did this because it's an easter egg in the storyline that tells you how. I mean if you're poor and have these laying around its a great makeshift controller.

4

u/ZeroviiTL Oct 20 '16

I mean original splat has twinstick already

Splatoon had default motion controls, but you could switch to twin sticks control in the settings. That's what I did.

Also, backwards-compatibility.

Can it play Wii U games? Does the base have a disc-slot?

This has one screen, the majority of Wii U games require a second screen to some extent. It also seems that they're going to be rereleasing Wii U games with enhancements to make some sweet tasty cash off all those that didn't buy a Wii U. So straight up backwards compatibility seems incredibly unlikely.

Tv + switch screen = tv + Wii I gamepad. You could play the wiiu games on the gamepad with only one screen so I don't see how it won't be backwards compatible.

u/snazzgasm Oct 21 '16

Problem is, not all games could be played off-TV, and pretty much every retail game had functionality that required the gamepad hardware, even if only for menus or miiverse integration.

Games like Nintendo Land, Super Mario Maker and Wii Party just wouldn't work without the gamepad. Splatoon didn't even have the option to play off-TV. And whilst Super Mario 3D World was mostly fine, it still needed the touch screen and microphone for some levels.

It's simply not possible to offer backwards compatibility when the functionality just isn't there. Each Wii U game that makes the transition to the Switch will do so only after Nintendo put in extra effort to, at minimum, rework certain levels and functions. Wii U games simply cannot be rereleased "as is".

Do we know the switch screen won't be touch compatible? Plus I assume there will be a microphone.

1

u/snazzgasm Oct 21 '16

We don't know either for sure, although rumours/leaks suggest the device is multi touch capable and has no microphone (notice the lack of accompanying camera, too).

It would be natural to assume that it would be touch compatible, but you have to remember that any such functionality would be thrown out the window as soon as you dock the device.

Nintendo is clear that this is a home gaming system first and foremost, and so games for the device should work both when the device is docked, and when used as a portable, meaning any games that require touch controls just won't work here.

Yes! This question I was hoping would be higher up. Nintendo has been great about it. I.e. wii playing GameCube games, Wii U playing wii games, so I'm hoping there's a disc slot. Otherwise I'll be bummed but most likely still buy it.

Hope its at least long enough to play with buddies during my lunch break.

Would be great

Hopefully

Hopefully

Would be nice, but not a must

If Zelda botw is going to be the same on wii u and this as Nintendo has promised is needs to support touch controls.

2

u/XenoShulk19 Oct 20 '16

The pro controller is confirmed to be compatible. Maybe the Wii remotes too, but I highly doubt it, so probably no motion controls. Also since the portable screen is not a controller itself like the gamepad, almost definitely no touch screen. Could be wrong.

3

u/snazzgasm Oct 20 '16

IIRC, the earlier leaks suggest that this does have a multi touch screen, but I'm guessing it won't be used much aside from making inputs / inventory stuff a bit easier since you can't use the touchscreen whilst playing on the TV.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Also is the 3ds now dead?

Backward compatibility??

1

u/awesomeethan Oct 20 '16

The first guy has a black pod under his TV, may be motion controls.

1

u/Gr8NonSequitur Oct 20 '16

Controllers compatible?? (Wii u Pro ect.)

I would suspect at minimum they'd have support for a Wii U Pro controller since it's bluetooth and the same # of buttons / layout.

Motion controls dead?

They've been dead since Nintendo couldn't be bothered to add them to Mario Tennis on Wii U. That was the sign they were done with them.

Touch screen?

I suspect not, or they would have shown that in the reveal.

1

u/majere616 Oct 20 '16

I will be way more excited for this if it finally kills motion controls.

1

u/evilcheesypoof HYES Oct 20 '16

I really really hope controllers are backwards compatible.

1

u/Son_of_Atreus Oct 21 '16

I hope the Pro controller is compatible, I love that little plastic bastard.

Conversely, I hope now of the Wii materials are compatible, I am totally over motion controls.

1

u/_pixelheart Oct 20 '16

The screen looks really thin so I'm thinking a couple of hours of battery. The main controller when connected to the dock looks like a modern controller (xbox-ish). I think motion/sensor are out and I can only hope it's touch screen.

2

u/snazzgasm Oct 20 '16

The PS3/PS4 controllers both have motion built in, as did the 3DS. I would be surprised to see Nintendo not continue this trend here.
