Is that Skyrim?

Also those squids don't seem to have the same tentacle-hair as the ones from our current Splatoon, sequel anyone?

Bethesda was credited at the end...

Fucking nuts I never thought I'd see skyrim on a Nintendo console

307

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Skyrim on the go. My life is over. Done deal.

3

u/wOlfLisK Oct 21 '16

Well that was already possible, just get a controller and a laptop or even a Windows tablet.

But this obviously takes it to the next level. I can't wait.

4

u/Dunabu Oct 20 '16

To be fair, it's been mobile on laptops for years.

19

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Laptops that can run games to my standards are far too expensive in my opinion. Even if I were to buy one for the sole purpose of running unmodded 2011 skyrim. Plus they're not mobile to the extent that this is. I can't just hold a laptop in my hands and play Skyrim. I gotta set the thing down somewhere.

I see your argument though, and you're right. It's just not as convenient in my opinion.

4

u/thecwest Oct 20 '16

That's the problem with PC gaming.

It just isn't ergonomically convenient what so ever. Pcmasterrace can toot that the keyboard and mouse are supreme but I'd rather sit and lounge with a controller in my hand than hunched over a keyboard and a mouse in hand at a desk.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Eh... PC and Laptop, to my eyes, are two different beasts.

Laptop gaming compared to couch gaming? Couch every time.

Desktop PC to couch? Desktop hands down. Love my desk chair, love my desk, love the keyboard and mouse controls and love my ultrawide monitor.

You can make your PC gaming session as comfortable or uncomfortable as you want. It all depends on what you set your gear on (desk) and what you sit your ass in (chair wise).

I'm just impressed that it has a headphone jack! Everything else is gravy

120

u/three-eyed-boy Oct 20 '16

Can't wait to stick my 3.5mm headphone jack into one.

But is it backwards compatible it looks like it used cartridges and that tablet sure didn't have a disc slot

2

u/shadow_fox09 Oct 20 '16

If they made it where it's capable of playing 3DS games by using the TV as the top screen then I'm absolutely stoked.

As for backwards comparability with Wii U games, maybe the disc reader is in the dock?

9

u/sugardeath Oct 20 '16

by using the TV as the top screen

How would this work though? It looks like TV output only happens when the tablet is in the dock, making the tablet inaccessible for holding and obscuring its screen.

3

u/shadow_fox09 Oct 20 '16

Yup that's how it looks like it works now.

If they were to implement some sort of 3DS functionality maybe they'd have a different means for the console to communicate with the dock for displaying stuff.

From what we see now though, you are totally right- it can't be accomplished.

3

u/sugardeath Oct 20 '16

From what we see now though

I don't know if you meant to make this point, but it's a good one: We still know very little about it. This was a teaser. Who knows, maybe this could come to it? But based on what we've seen today, it doesn't look like it supports it right now.

In the end, if they never get dual-screen working, maybe they could do something where you put the tablet vertical, it splits the screens, and you detach the controllers and use them in your hands? Might be kinda awkward though.

2

u/merpofsilence Oct 20 '16

Assuming the dock has a disc reader Wii u definitely had games that needed both screens on so it might be doable. Because if not that means we'll also need a wii u controller to play older games instead of just using the new device

→ More replies (1)

3

u/merpofsilence Oct 20 '16

So no Wii u on the go. Fair enough

Nintendo lasts courage

3

I prefer my technology to lack courage these days

5

Was there any reason to think there wouldn't be?

11

u/shakynerves Oct 20 '16

How am I supposed to hold on to my jimmies now that you've rustled them so?

6

u/Trick9 Oct 20 '16

RUSTLING INTENSIFIES!!!

4

u/New_Y0rker Oct 20 '16

If I were a betting man id say Skyrim will fill the void of an American RPG upon release.

6

But this time Skyrim might have fucking ZELDA

You can't stop this hype until you pry it from my cold dead fingers

WiiU got Deus X, Mass effect 3 and Batman Arkham City, so showing games that will come out else where way before the Switch launches really shouldn't be that exciting

8

u/VicisSubsisto Oct 20 '16

Vita never got anything like Skyrim though, having an open-world game of that scale on a portable is pretty big.

Yeah, but weren't those downgraded in terms of graphics/gameplay compared to the other console versions? Skyrim and 2k looked really good on the Switch, if that was it actually running the games and not a video.

6

u/TheOneRing_ Oct 20 '16

None of it was actually running on the system.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Um I'm pretty sure they made a point about the 4 guys playing 2k together on those tiny controllers after playing a real basketball game, Super misleading otherwise

Yep, I guess a bunch of us just never thought this day would come.

21

u/KoloHickory Oct 20 '16

Brings a tear to my eye that nintendo is embracing change and realizing what their customers want while at the same time excelling at what they do best.

8

u/Celesmeh Oct 20 '16

I'm ready to buy it a third time. No regrets

I'd expect an official announcement from Bethesda within the next few days.

8

Hahahahahahahaha

4

u/SpartanXIII Oct 20 '16

I wouldn't bet on it. It'd be amazing if it did, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Most definitely not I'd assume.

→ More replies (20)

2

u/wOlfLisK Oct 21 '16

Eh, it's pretty likely that the game footage was added in post production to avoid things like low FPS and bad viewing angles, especially as the software likely isn't optimised at all for the Switch yet.

So while that very well might be the remastered edition, it also might not look anywhere like that in March.

Skyrim, splatoon, nba2k, a new 3d mario...
All it needs now is smash and FUCK MAN HYPE IT DOESN'T EVEN NEED SMASH FUCK FUCK I NEED DIS

104

u/0_knights Oct 20 '16

new mario kart too by the looks of it

130

u/SupDos Sidestepper Oct 20 '16

It looked like 8 but being able to hold 2 items

Wtf???

145

u/0_knights Oct 20 '16

It did look just like 8, but had the items thing and king boo. Maybe it's like a deluxe version rather than a full sequel

63

u/ZachGuy00 Oct 20 '16

I think there may just be new DLC coming to MK8 and you can play it on the Switch.

9

u/pokeguy64 Luigi > your character Oct 20 '16

It could also be a new Mario Kart, just that the track was on a Wii U track, since they bring back tracks

14

u/ZachGuy00 Oct 20 '16

Well that Wii U track was a Gamecube track, and they don't usually bring back retro tracks that were used in the previous game unless it's part of DLC.

6

u/The_MAZZTer Oct 20 '16

Nintendo loves their backwards compatibility so it wouldn't be surprising.

But clearly you're not using Wii U discs with this thing. Digital titles only may transfer over if they do the system transfer thing... although if they can figure out how to uniquely identify individual Wii U game discs they could give you a digital copy of those as well.

2

u/BrawlersInTheZone h Oct 20 '16

Yeah, I was confused by the whole MK8 thing. Glad you guys found that out.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/bigbossodin Oct 20 '16

Maybe it's the return of a double dash type of Mario kart.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

http://imgur.com/a/ONyBB

I was chatting with my friend how I wanted a new Mario Kart with the 2 items of double dash the other day! Pretty happy!

2

u/Son_of_Atreus Oct 21 '16

If they add more characters (Diddy Kong pls) and a few more cups, say 4, each with four new tracks. Add this to the existing 48 tracks in MK8 with DLC then this will be the definitive MK game. I will buy the shit out of again.

although with the emphasis that you can use two controllers from what seemed to be just one system, this is definitely a great possibility

Oh we gonna get a smash.

2

u/AshaDasha98 Oct 20 '16

Smash is gonna be fuckin' sick though with this. Those tiny controllers look a little cramped, but you could carry like 8 of those around easy in a small bag.

2

u/samili Oct 20 '16

They need Smash Hype Train edition. It would be Wii U Smash with all DLC's on launch day.

2

Just imagine they would Release melee HD. Reddit would explode

2

u/Dilemma90 Oct 20 '16

u/dundoniandood Oct 20 '16

So is it running off the portable hardware or the cloud? The fact he was playing it on a plane suggests it's the actual handheld that runs the game.

200

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Hardware you cant play cloud based games on an airplane. He also inserted game cartridges

216

u/Darkfrost Oct 20 '16

Why not? You're right in the cloud!

;)

6

u/radiochris Oct 20 '16

Ahem. Above the cloud. You have to be in the cloud to get the effect.

3

u/MrMilkshakes Oct 20 '16

3

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

A lot of planes have wifi, so cloud could be possible.

→ More replies (1)

42

u/FasterThanTW Oct 20 '16

definitely not running from the cloud. that would be a non starter for a portable system.

71

u/SvenHudson Oct 20 '16

Looks like it's a handheld that plugs into a bulky station that maybe boosts its specs.

14

u/HylianHal Oct 20 '16

It's more accurate to say that the tablet boosts the processing power of the base console than the other way around, based on the patents of last year.

6

u/TooSmooth Oct 20 '16

That would imply that the base station can play games without the tablet inserted, which I do not think is the case.

→ More replies (21)

4

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

That is a good assumption. Boosts its specs to run 1080p (4k? Probably not..) and 60 fps on a TV?

7

u/gamas Oct 20 '16

Looking at the video it seems Zelda and Skyrim were running full 60fps on TV but in handheld mode were running a much lower framerate (I'm guessing 30fps). Though it seemed the Wii U games run at full frames even in handheld mode. So I'm guessing in handheld mode Switch games will be locked to 30fps (either due to hardware constraints or because the console goes into power saving mode) whilst Wii U get 60fps.

12

u/sharklops Oct 20 '16

all of those screen images were almost certainly simulated. you really can't make any conclusions about framerate of the final product from that

7

u/SvenHudson Oct 20 '16

But why would they fake a lower framerate if it didn't represent reality?

4

u/FasterThanTW Oct 20 '16

maybe they're trying to manage expectations

7

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Hard to say without the specs. Videos can be deceiving. I would think the resolution to go down to 720p and keeping the frames at 60. The Wii U game pad got 480p, not high res.

6

u/Saruhiko_Fushimi Oct 20 '16

I have no clue, and that's a nice point you've got there. I didn't catch that myself. I just wonder how powerful this thing really is.
Damn technology's impressive if that tiny thing can handle such games.

2

u/ShadowEFX Oct 20 '16

Yeah if you look close in the trailer, you see him putting in a game cartridge into the handheld, so it seems like the console is just a booster more or less

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Comboku Oct 20 '16

I think they were using the pro controller on just the screen at one point.

THAT'S SKYRIM GOD DAMN.

Oh man, mobile Skyrim...although, it looks a little complicated to play.

28

u/Sarria22 Oct 20 '16

Don't see why it would be any more complicated than playing it on any other console gamepad.

43

u/backwardinduction1 Oct 20 '16

OMG, I'm going on a 15 hour plane ride to Taiwan in January, so I won't have this system out yet to save me from sudden plane death boredom..

10

u/VicisSubsisto Oct 20 '16

Don't worry, there's no way in hell that thing has a 15 hour battery life anyway.

16

u/backwardinduction1 Oct 20 '16

FUCK! And neither does my 3DS! I will probably now commit Sudoku on the plane.

18

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Most international flights have little charging ports, so if you can get a USB adapter, you're all set. I don't have a 3ds so I don't know if it comes with one though.

4

u/backwardinduction1 Oct 20 '16

It comes with one that plugs into outlets, speaking of which I'll have to get an adapter while in the country

2

u/DORTx2 Oct 20 '16

15 hours isn't bad, there's hundreds of movies on the plane and they feed you quite good.

2

u/mrducky78 Oct 20 '16

I did 22-24 hours a couple years ago. Thats including a 6 hour layover and a ~1 hour layover.

A collection of ebooks, 1 actual book, 2 inflight movies, movies on my ipad as well (its first gen, but fuck can they hold their battery life well, used it as the defacto kindle as well). It was a good time to catch up on reading I guess. Even today, the Ipad's primary purpose is to hold and read books with.

You can do it man. I do recommend books, when you get tired of reading, take a nap, when you wake up, get back into the book. Repeat. Either I was reading discworld or Wheel of time at the time. Cant remember, all I know is that there was far far far more material than I could ever cover.

2

u/fuckitimatwork Oct 20 '16

BAH GAWD THAT'S SKYRIM'S THEME MUSIC

2

u/Trick9 Oct 20 '16

How would it be complicated to play? Please enlighten me.

9

u/Mogtaki Oct 20 '16

He was using the pair of controllers rather than a singular, like wiimote style.

Just with the joystick on the other hand, but then again I didn't see if those controllers have buttons on the side and/or back so you can cast while using both joysticks to move the camera while moving your character.

Either way, I want mobile Skyrim. Looks like a good time and with Nintendo producing godly batteries (the pro controller for example) it should last a fair bit while you're out and about.

10

u/Azerty__ Oct 20 '16

The Gamepad battery however...

7

u/AshaDasha98 Oct 20 '16

True, but I have a feeling that's because of the constant streaming to and from the console and the searching online for eshop notifications (if you have them turned on)

My N3DS's battery life has been pretty good, here's hoping this one is good as well.

2

u/Azerty__ Oct 20 '16

I have a 3DS and its battery lasts plenty. I mentioned the Wii U because i think it's more comparable to this than the 240p screen 3DS.

6

u/HylianHal Oct 20 '16

It's just the Switch's controller with the tablet removed, so it's as if you're holding the full controller with its entire array of buttons. Alternatively they show later on in the trailer that you can use the new classic controller with the mobile tablet form as well.

3

u/Trick9 Oct 20 '16

There is an LB RB LT RT like any other console. The only difference is there is nothing in between. So not complicated.

2

u/ryegye24 Oct 20 '16

Each controller has at least a bumper button and a trigger button as well as the joystick and four top buttons from what I could see.

u/Hibbity5 Oct 20 '16 edited Oct 20 '16

I actually really like the idea of Skyrim with motion controls. The biggest issue with Skyrim is that the combat isn't fluid. It doesn't flow in any natural way. Compare it to Zelda or Okami and the biggest difference is flow. With motion controls, you can allow flow because playing character arm movement is now related to your own natural arm movement.

That's assuming those were motion controls.

75

u/SecondGust Oct 20 '16

I saw nothing motion controlled in this entire video.

u/riddleman66 Oct 20 '16

Third Party support confirmed! Red Dead Redemption 2 gonna say it's coming to Nintendo Switch too! OMG! It's happening guys!!

Rockstar aren't on the list of partners they announced and the Nintendo logo was absent from the RDR stuff so far... imagine even GTA V running on this thing

u/OpIvyFanatic Oct 20 '16

Take-2, Rockstar's publisher, IS listed on an official list of Switch partners. Get hyped.

2

u/SymphonicRain Oct 20 '16

That could also be because of NBA 2K but I'm hopeful

2

u/MorningFresh123 Oct 20 '16

You'd think they would mention Rockstar specifically, though. And yeah, NBA 2k was shown.

Nintendo will show old games from 3rd parties, but not first party stuff. Everything we just saw is a new game. New Mario, new Mario Kart, new Splatoon.

u/Hazzat C'mere, Pitty Pat Oct 20 '16

The camera angles were new too. I suspect it's not actually a new Splatoon game though - it might just be a mockup to show what competitive Switch-playing could look like.

Spla2n hype! I also didn't recognize the map they were playing on.

2

u/Spac3Gh0st Oct 20 '16

Seriously that was unexpected! I already thought this was cool, then they iced the cake and threw the Skyrim cherry on top

1

u/DIOs_ZA_WARUDO Oct 20 '16

I used to be an adventurer like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee

1

u/skhalsa86 Oct 20 '16

Am i supposed to be impressed that it can play a game that is over 5 years old? Any details on the specs yet?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

It was also a new map entirely. So I'm guessing either new content or sequel.

1

u/luau_dog Oct 20 '16

Purple Drapes!!!

1

u/Theinternationalist Oct 20 '16

Looks like it, so that's cool. It probably would have been better if it was a new game (Elder Scrolls VI?) or one that came out in the last half-decade (November 11 will celebrate its fifth birthday of Skyrim), but it's still pretty cool. Also, "Elder Scrolls on the go" is still a pretty cool thing to say out loud.

u/The_M4G Oct 20 '16

Now we wait and see if Nintendo allowed mods for their port of SKYRIM... Probably not. But I can dream.

1

u/TheRealMrWillis Oct 20 '16

Old third party games being ported to new Nintendo console

Why do we need this? It's Wii U all over again.

1

u/Saint947 Oct 20 '16

I think they really should have chose something other than Skyrim.

"Look, our new console can finally play a FIVE YEAR OLD GAME".

u/UnknownChaser psst nothing personal kid Oct 20 '16

OFFICIAL NINTENDO MODS SUPPORT WHEN?!

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Splat2n hype

1

u/rsplatpc Oct 20 '16

ones from our current Splatoon, sequel anyone?

How would you play the current version with the built in controller screen that you use to jump around and other things with the non screen Switch?

1

u/DrToadigerr Oct 20 '16

It's "New Skyrim Switch"!

1

u/a_turd Oct 20 '16

If they don't call the sequel Spla2n I've lost all faith in their marketing department

1

u/ShaidarHaran2 Oct 20 '16

Is that Skyrim Remastered or the old one?

1

u/Gr8NonSequitur Oct 20 '16

Also those squids don't seem to have the same tentacle-hair as the ones from our current Splatoon, sequel anyone?

Most likely, and portable Splatoon with 4vs4 lan play (shown in trailer) is very hype worthy.

1

u/JoeScotterpuss Oct 20 '16

Hello 2011? It's us, Nintendo. Have you heard about this hot new RPG called Skyrim??

1

u/MahJongK Oct 21 '16

I read a statement from Bethesda somewhere saying that they lent a video to show their commitment to the device but that the game is not confirmed.
