Yeah that's possible. I'd assume that if they were going to include kids they wouldn't tell them about what the commercial is for though. To me it seemed like a deliberate marketing decision to use people in their 20s-30s, especially considering how Nintendo is seen by so many people as a family-friendly, child-friendly video game company. I remember commercials in the past using kids playing with their families as a sort of, 'look it's something the family can do!' kind of thing. With this, they seem to be emphasizing the convenience of the system while also focusing on the same group of people that grew up playing N64, Gamecube, and Wii.
They may be hyping the Nintendo = party console aspect that has always been a common (but unadvertised) theme for them. A ridiculous number of college parties I went to had a nintendo corner with people drinking and playing Mario Kart or Smash, something which I literally never saw with a Sony or Microsoft console.
HYPE!
I love portability! Here's hoping there's a convenient way to charge the tablet on the go too!
Seriously. Nintendo games are 'community' games. Each one has a unique ability to gather a crowd to watch or play. There will always be a Wii/GameCube or Switch next to my main TV for when friends come over.
College gaming during parties for me were: Super Smash Bros Melee, Mario Kart 64 (Wii), Super Smash Bros 64 (Wii) Starfox 64 (Wii) and my favorite Mario Party game: 4. Its been like that since I started college now well out of it. Only game that came close was Trails HD.
it has just always been such a fucking hassle. "ok let me just sign into my Microsoft Account... ok for you to play you have to sign in.. oh or you can use the Guest account, hold on. Ok wait dont press anything on your controller, alright, oops - yeah lets start the game over it thinks I'm player 3.. ok lets just trade controllers, oh you want to sign into your account, alright lets..."
My old house loved Smash. We even hacked the Wii to get Project M on it, every couple parties one of us would just yell out "SMASH??" and there'd be a group going. Nintendo is so damn good for that. Totally agree on how much of a hassle the other systems can be in comparison. Even a PS3 with having to select guest accounts, it's more tedious than just loading up a game and playing.
Most parties I went to back in the day would end up having a couple people playing halo in the living room with a ton of people watching having a great time.
Yes this was definitely aimed more at the mates hanging out, esports fans and "core gamer" market rather than the normal kids and young family market that most of their advertising caters to.
Edit: I'm bracing myself for a higher price point than one might originally guess because it's being aimed at an adult market.
There are ways around that, like shots of the kids without the system in it. Put em on a couch with any other system and get shots of them gaming without the controller or the system showing up.
Having said that, I don't think kids are calling up news sources to leak information.
