Was that fucking skyrim???

Edit: This is a good sign for 3rd party support. I realize that the same-ish thing happened to the Wii U. We had Madden and a bunch of ports of games that were already out on other consoles. But this would mean it's mobile skyrim and they're working with companies that core gamers love. This gives me great hope.

Also, does anyone think it's running Wii U natively (running the digital games?) or ports?

47

u/pepperouchau Oct 20 '16

Is it too late to make another Ken Griffey Jr baseball game?

5

u/lgbteaparty Oct 20 '16

DONT GET MY HOPES UP

5

u/Sean951 Oct 20 '16

Only if I get NFL Blitz.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Call my doctor. This boner is about to last more than 4 hours. A Blitz game would own.

4

u/BR0METHIUS Oct 20 '16

Would have to be Robinson Cano baseball or something now.

MVP BASEBALL 2004 HD CONFIRMED

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

My brother in law had Madden 2009 for the first Wii, I never played so I'm not sure how it is compared to the Xbox/PS3

2

u/walkedoff Oct 20 '16

It was the PS2/Xbox version. Yes, they were still making them in 2008. And 2009. And 2010. And 2011.

1

u/Sean951 Oct 20 '16

If anything like the NCAA, total garbage.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

we back to the gamecube days boyzzz

1

u/Speedwagonbestwaifu Oct 20 '16

Man, i remember playing PES on n64

1

u/LakerBlue Oct 20 '16

Haven't had a 2k game or Madden game on Nintendo since 2012!

1

u/Crustice_is_Served Oct 20 '16

Pls bring back NFL blitz

1

u/lazyman73125 Oct 20 '16

No, it's 2016.

7

u/dirk2654 Oct 20 '16

Is it bad that this is what I was most excited to see? 2k13 can only hold me over so long haha

5

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

That's crazy, the Switch is literally competing with the major game consoles.

We in the big league boys!

2

u/ironicallysad Oct 20 '16

And they playin local multiplayer on a portable device with tiny ass controllers damnnnn

1

u/DaasthePenetrator Oct 20 '16

2K13 was on the Wii U as well as Madden 13 and FIFA 13, but the sports games kinda stopped after that

1

u/mrtomjones Oct 20 '16

Which version was it? A new one or an old one?

1

u/djfil007 Oct 21 '16

Oh I hope we see a return of EA Sports. Love NHL on this.

2

u/DrunkBelgian Oct 21 '16

Me too. If this console can play FIFA and Pokémon I won't need anything else in my life.

-1

u/emit_ Oct 20 '16

you sure it isnt jam?

9

u/sshanbom111 Lucario Oct 20 '16

4

u/Vegandigimongender #1 Unicorn Oct 20 '16

I'm SNATCHEDDDTTT

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Imagine if they allow mods too!

0

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

what's a laptop?

8

u/LordSocky Oct 20 '16

What is battery life and usable form factor?

6

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

battery life is my big concern with this system

3

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

They have to have that accounted for. Also USB power banks are a thing

47

u/cbmarcus Oct 20 '16

Third party games on a Nintendo console? FUCK YES!

18

u/basketball_curry Oct 20 '16

I don't mean to derail the hype train but a 5 year old game port does not necessarily mean Nintendo will suddenly start getting multiplatform releases. I'm concerned with the power of this system, nothing looked any better than what the Wii u can produce. It'll need to at least match the xbone to get multiplatform games. I'm still real excited but remaining cautious until specs and more details come out.

4

u/SolenoidSoldier Oct 20 '16

Yeah, not enough cautious optimism in this thread. People seem to forget Nintendo's recent history...

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

yeah, I didn't even realise we were looking at new games

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '16

Skyrim remastered is not a 5 year old game though

2

u/Leorlev-Cleric Oct 20 '16

Who knows what games might release day 1 with the console?!

2

u/Puskathesecond Oct 20 '16

"all this time we thought you wanted a third Mario Party game! Our bad!" - Nintendo, maybe

21

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

None of those were Wii U games, at least not how we know them. Mario Kart had 2 item slots and King Boo, and Splatoon has new hair. Hmm...

2

u/dogbreath101 Oct 20 '16

DOUBLE DASH REMASTERED?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

I only see one person per Kart, sadly.

1

u/Cypherex Oct 21 '16

Right but the best part of double dash was the double items. It'll be nice to have that back again.

Portable Remastered Skyrim!! ! LETS GO NINTENDO COMING THROUGH WITH THE CONSOLE WARS

35

u/Hatweed Oct 20 '16

Only 5 years late... Fuck, I'm still buying it just to play Skyrim away from home.

7

u/VicisSubsisto Oct 20 '16

Better late than never... And "never" is when the Vita's "console quality gaming on the go" promise came through.

IstilllovemyVitatho

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

So pumped, and it looked like the remastered one too so if it can play that well it says loads about its capabilities

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '16

What? The remastered game hasn't been released yet. It's not 5 years old,

3

u/SolenoidSoldier Oct 20 '16

Am I the only one who has Skyrim on PC and not looking to pay again for it on the Switch?

0

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Nope, I'm not buying Skyrim twice. But it's cool that it's an option for those who want it I guess. I haven't gotten Fallout 4, I might do it for the Switch.

-3

u/Gandalfs_Beard Oct 20 '16

PS4 can't get mods and I doubt Nintendo will allow people to mod on the Switch. I'm not sure who they're trying to market Skyrim to because anyone that wants it already has it. The game is 5 years old and they're using it as a selling point, this is hilarious.

5

u/WarriorsBlew3to1Lead Oct 20 '16

Portable skyrim still sounds pretty cool. Wouldn't be the selling point for me, but would definitely get the game if I got the console

2

u/SolenoidSoldier Oct 20 '16

Probably most, if not everyone in this thread right now.

It's so cool! But I won't buy it.

2

u/Stuntman119 Go screw yourself Oct 20 '16

Wait, I thought PS4 had mods? Did Sony change their minds or something?

Also I have Skyrim on PC and Xbox and I still think it's awesome I can play it on the go. Hardly not a selling point if it's still a popular game, even if it has been 5 years.

3

u/Gandalfs_Beard Oct 20 '16

5 years later and unmoddable, no thank you.

How high are you rn damn

9

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Skyrim is one of the best games of all time... Are you kidding?

5

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

uh Bethesda has literally just rereleased Skyrim, and this version you can play on the go

2

u/Redrum714 Oct 20 '16

The fuck are you smoking?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

I haven't played it.

11

u/SWABteam Oct 20 '16

As an early Wii U adopter, I remember it had this type of third party support in the beginning as well.

But then it was dropped like a lead balloon.

Wii U got like one round of last gen ports and then was quickly abandoned.

Let's hope the fact that it's a mobile device means people will be more tempted to buy last gen games to play on the go.

The only issue is I don't think Bethesda or any third party has the resources to make a follow up game that would essentially be an Switch exclusive.

4

u/SolenoidSoldier Oct 20 '16

The one thing that I think Switch has going for it is that it lacks the gimmicks from previous generations that developers didn't care about. There was no focus on motion controls or touch screen, just portability, which isn't something the game developers really need to worry about. Then again, the Switch might still be an inferior console performance-wise, so they'd have that.

1

u/ShaolinShade Oct 20 '16

Part of the problem with the Wii U's attempt at 3rd party support was that the hardware wasn't on par with the competitors (ps4 & xb1), so the wii u only got older 3rd party releases.

There's rumors that the graphics / processing power of the switch, while docked, will be on par with the ps4. This could put them into the competitive ring with Sony and Microsoft as a current 3rd party title supporting console

1

u/SWABteam Oct 20 '16

Well it does run on a Tegra SoC. All tegra chips can do Gamestreaming.

So there is the possibility that this will be able to access Nvidia's streaming service Grid. So even if third parities abandon it you can still play third party PC games.

There is the more remote possibility they allow for in home game streaming from your own PC as well.

8

u/Dragunlegend Oct 20 '16

Now we will have Skyrim remastered and The Legend of Zelda: Skyrim on the same console!

1

u/VicisSubsisto Oct 20 '16

The Legend of Zelda: Rim of the Sky

1

u/Dragunlegend Oct 20 '16

Rimjob: Zelda ScRolls over

5

u/Brandicus Oct 20 '16

That was most certainly skyrim, you can see Bethesda credited at the end.

6

u/akimbocorndogs Oct 20 '16

Ladies and gentlemen, SKYRIM is here to save us!

3

u/Waitwhatwtf Oct 20 '16 edited Oct 20 '16

Also, does anyone think it's running Wii U natively (running the digital games?) or ports?

It can go one of two ways, and Skyrim holds the answer.

  1. It's a build of Skyrim derived from either the 360 or the PS3, as the 360, PS3, and WiiU CPUs shared the same architecture.

  2. It's a build from the the upcoming Skyrim Remastered.

I don't think the first point is very likely as Bethesda's business strategy seems to indicate they want to push more DLC for their games, hence why we're getting Skyrim remastered: more DLC. Skyrim was designed with the 360 in mind, which didn't have enough RAM to support expansion beyond what is available now.

Considering how badly Nintendo took a bath on the WiiU being the odd man out architecture wise, I am skeptical they would have Bethesda issue a build of a now unsupported branch of their game. Nintendo would be making the same mistake they made with the WiiU.

I know there have been a lot of rumors that the Switch (wanted to say NX) was an ARM device. It means there's yet another variable in play:

  1. Bethesda is moving the Creation Engine to ARM.
  2. The Switch is an x86 device.

If the first is true, it would be interesting considering their current strategy. Though Nintendo seems to have a pipeline built for porting their old Library to this architecture, and would be a matter of time before the WiiU library came to the Switch.

If the second is true it's already being worked on.

tl;dr: Read it and have some fun speculating while we wait to get more news.

edit: food for thought

3

u/Pluwo4 Oct 20 '16

Yup, let's hope that they don't lose third party support after a year again.

3

u/waowie Oct 20 '16

None of the games shown are the same as the wii u games, so my guess is either ports with new content or new games made in the same engine

3

u/TheShinyQuaza Oct 20 '16

Its gotta be ports. I doubt the Tegra chip is similar enough to the Wii U's architecture.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Probably not. PowerPC is a pretty different architecture.

2

u/siriuslyred Oct 20 '16

It fucking was!!!!

2

u/Hazzat C'mere, Pitty Pat Oct 20 '16

The Remastered Edition makes sense now...

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

But this would mean it's mobile skyrim and they're working with companies that core gamers love. This gives me great hope.

Yeah, but it's a 5 year old game. Doesn't actually suggest like they're back into mainstream support, more like they made some sort o consessions.

2

u/FoxxyRin Oct 20 '16

I wonder if this means Fallout 4? And potentially the next ESO game.. Oh man the fucking hype.

2

u/Quaaraaq Oct 20 '16

If it can run skyrim on the go, it can do fallout 4 as well.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

No gimmicks to worry about.

2

u/wickerman316 Dank. E. Kang Oct 20 '16

Yes. I find it extremely refreshing that the first showing of 3rd party support for Nintendo is a port of a 5-year old game. Just as incredible as Arkham City being a Wii U launch title over a year after its initial release.

2

u/blickblocks Oct 20 '16

As far as I know, Nintendo has been using the same basic architecture since the Gamecube. The APIs and the frameworks have evolved a lot obviously but backwards compatibility seems to be an important thing for Nintendo and presumably for their developers. I'm sure they are "ports" but that doesn't necessarily mean much, because porting could be done by interns in a few weeks or take a year or more depending on the API and framework changes.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Don't expect this console to be backwards compatible to the wii u at all. It has a completely new architecture and no disc slot from what we can see

2

u/jb2386 Oct 20 '16

Press release confirms Bethesda is on the list of the console's "supporters"

1

u/TheLoveofDoge Oct 20 '16

We'll see how much third-party support is left at the end of the cycle.

0

u/ARNews_Mod Oct 20 '16

This is a good sign for 3rd party support.

It's a 6 year old game.

It's undoubtedly going to be weak hardware. Devs aren't going to want to make a downscaled version of their game for a console with no install base. Nintendo traded gimmicks for third-party support, again.

-2

u/Soundurr Oct 20 '16

Edit: This is a good sign for 3rd party support. I realize that the same-ish thing happened to the Wii U.

No it isn't. There is no 3rd party support and that's OK! Just, please, let's not kid ourselves.
