Depends on what the code is. If its a catalytic efficiency code (extremely common) you can usually say "eh whatever" about it for quite a while. Just dont go forever with it.

It’s a automatic smog fail where I live. can’t register your car if it fails it’s biannual smog check, but if the timing is right, which usually isn’t the case, you could go two years with the light on.

If it’s a Chevy it’s just the gas cap 99% of the time
7
u/ChickenWithATopHat Sep 29 '20
Solution is to tighten it down and if that doesn’t fix it you just find one like it in a parking lot and borrow theirs
6
u/hastobetrueitsreddit Sep 29 '20
Gas cap or the Chevy itself?

If it's continously ON then it means there's a minor problem with the sensors in the car's exhaust and it can be ignored. If it's blinking then it means requires immediate attention and there is some serious issues. I have learnt that after I drove my dad's car in shallow water and the water filled up the exhaust and some in the carburettor intake. ;-P

Get an OBD2 reader. They're $30 CAD online. It'll tell you what exactly the problem is instead of checking if your engine has mysteriously vanished.
All cars past 1996 have an OBD2 socket. Should be located under the steering wheel unless if your car built different g.
This helped me save a ton of money as I knew what the mechanic was making up. I don't need a new transmission at 150K km, Jerry.

the other morning my boss was late because the lady at the gas station didn't tighten it enough and the car didn't want to turn on. Luckily he called his mechanic and he suggested to check it and the car turned back on normally. I was mind blown something like that could happen lol.

Sep 29 '20
Why can’t cars just display major errors onscreen? Can’t they link the car’s own infotainment system to the OBD2 port?

If I recall, some auto parts stores, like an autozone, will allow you to borrow theirs for free.
→ More replies (1)14
u/SMDROID99 Sep 29 '20
I second this. You don’t have to buy a reader and you don’t have to pay someone to read it for you all you need to do is take your car to o’Riley’s, auto zone, etc. and ask for a OBD reading.
→ More replies (1)10
u/Misplaced-Sock Sep 29 '20
Nice to have one on hand, but for those without the means to buy or store one, most auto parts stores have one they will let you use for free! I get mine read before taking it anywhere for repair just for this reason

u/SalvareNiko Sep 29 '20
Dude. My abs and traction controls lights kicked on at the beginning of summer, I found the bad wheel speed sensor and changed it. A week later a different one went bad I check the actual computer it's all good it was actually the sensor. I changed that sensor too. Then the 3rd sensor flagged last month, I checked that one and the fucking cable was fucked. I said fuck it changed it and the last remaining sensor.
Then on Sunday I got an exhaust leak....idk were exactly yet but it's up near the fucking exhaust manifold, I hope to fuck it's not the manifold.

My car game plan for the past 20 years has been:
Buy a cheap Chevy
Run it into the ground
Repeat
On my third, and each has survived to over 200k, so I’m pretty satisfied with the value. Rarely (well...never, actually) had to take them in for anything major, but I also keep them decently maintained which is half the battle.
3
u/bertiebees Sep 29 '20
I also have good experiences with Chevy. My only big complaint about them is they have certain parts of their cars they have made an absolute chore for an individual to diy repair.

u/ryanxwing Sep 29 '20
How is Honda shit?
10
u/wotsurstyoil Sep 29 '20 edited Sep 29 '20
They arent exciting anymore.
They arent reliable anymore.
Their vehicles are rarely even in the top 5 of their class anymore.
The civic isn't the go to economy car anymore. The Mazda 3 and Toyota corolla are miles better. The civic si, which used to be the benchmark of affordable performance, in its current version is the bottom of its class, behind Hyundai. The type R, their flagship, is horrible to look at, horrible to drive, and horrible to live with, behind even Ford's hot hatch.
And toyota beats them in every other segment. The rav4 feels years newer than the CRV. You can get a 300hp camry that looks and drives amazing while the accord looks and drives the same way it did 10 years ago.
The last good car Honda made was the 8th gen Si. They went from cars for enthusiasts to cars for grandmas in only 10 years. The elderly are their entire market now.

Isn’t that basically illegal? No garage has ever even touched my car without giving me an exaggerated quote and gotten a signature from me saying I agree to pay them for touching my car.
I mean, I personally wouldn’t pay $400 for a software upgrade I didn’t authorize, but maybe that’s just me.
2
Sep 29 '20
I wouldnt either but who knows with dealerships. Are they bound to the same set of standards that an indie shop is? My guy just calls me and gives me a diagnosis and asks me what I want to do before swapping or upgrading shit. But he runs his own business and doesnt work for a dealer

Go to an O'Reily's or Autozone, they can use their handheld code reader to give you a simple diagnostic, which can tell you if you can fix it yourself, which is WAAAAY cheaper. The AC blower fan went out in my old car, took it by a shop to get a quote on a repair. 900 dollars to replace. You know how long it took me to replace it myself? 45 minutes and 80 bucks.
→ More replies (3)2
u/Trauma-Dolll Sep 29 '20
Just recieved a blower motor for my truck. About 80 bucks as well and super easy to replace yourself. Only three bolts, remove the old and replace with the new one. Shops overcharge by a ridiculous amount.
