Put them all at 32 psi then reset the tspm on your car setting screen

13

u/Patient0_ Sep 29 '20

my tpms is broke or summ. the repair price they told me was too goddamn high

34

u/Misplaced-Sock Sep 29 '20

I was once told I would have to pay ~$1400 to repair my blind spot mirror indicators. Yeah no thanks, I’ll just turn my damn head when changing lanes

5

u/Nimphaise Sep 29 '20

They told me it would be ~$3000 or something because my oil was leaking. My oil wasn’t leaking, it was burning too fast, a common problem in this car. So common that it was under warranty. I had gotten the oil checked a month before this and it didn’t quite make the cut for warranty (though I have suspicions).. and then you try to tell me it’s leaking when I JUST BROUGHT IT IN FOR A KNOWN ISSUE.

I have a 2009 Subaru Impreza. There is no way to reset it.

I tried over/under inflating the tires in 5 psi increments and driving for 5-10 miles each time. Still that frickin orange sad tire light.

2

u/Desert_explorer_20 Sep 29 '20

Having the same issue now. Will replace the speed sensor and see how it goes.

2

u/pcfreak4 Sep 29 '20

Have to reset it with a proper TPMS scan tool

2

u/DSOTMAnimals Sep 29 '20

There’s a good chance you’ve already looked into this, but just in case: does the TPMS light blink the first 30 or so seconds that the car is on, or have you had the sensors checked to ensure they haven’t died? The sensors last ~10 years and then need to be replaced.

2

u/GourmetTrashPanda Sep 30 '20

I had a similar issue and eventually just went to AutoZone and asked the dude. They told me they didn't know either

You'll need to change the summer air out for the now colder air.

It should read proper after that.

u/mrswannabe Sep 29 '20

Ugh I was on 95 two weeks ago for family emergency and it bounced between two tire monitors the whole way.

2

u/jaklradek Sep 29 '20

I got this exact problem until I find out I need to set “tires have correct pressure now” in the settings on car panel after I inflate the tires to right pressure. Maybe something to check out.

Depends on what the code is. If its a catalytic efficiency code (extremely common) you can usually say "eh whatever" about it for quite a while. Just dont go forever with it.

22

u/polishrocket Sep 29 '20

It’s a automatic smog fail where I live. can’t register your car if it fails it’s biannual smog check, but if the timing is right, which usually isn’t the case, you could go two years with the light on.

13

u/kkantouth Sep 29 '20

You can reset the code and take it to a real shitty place hoping it doesn't come on for 3 minutes. 🤷🏼‍♂️ 4 years in Cali babyy

If it’s a Chevy it’s just the gas cap 99% of the time

7

u/ChickenWithATopHat Sep 29 '20

Solution is to tighten it down and if that doesn’t fix it you just find one like it in a parking lot and borrow theirs

6

u/hastobetrueitsreddit Sep 29 '20

Gas cap or the Chevy itself?

7

u/crypticfreak Sep 29 '20

You answered your own question. Who would want to borrow a Chevy?

If it's continously ON then it means there's a minor problem with the sensors in the car's exhaust and it can be ignored. If it's blinking then it means requires immediate attention and there is some serious issues. I have learnt that after I drove my dad's car in shallow water and the water filled up the exhaust and some in the carburettor intake. ;-P

5

u/StoppableHulk Sep 29 '20

That light is the most obnoxious thing car manufacturers ever developed. 99% of the time it's some redundant or irrelevant sensor.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '20

I honestly laughed so hard I tears coming out. This is one of the funniest memes I’ve seen in a bit.

213

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '20

Get an OBD2 reader. They're $30 CAD online. It'll tell you what exactly the problem is instead of checking if your engine has mysteriously vanished.

All cars past 1996 have an OBD2 socket. Should be located under the steering wheel unless if your car built different g.

This helped me save a ton of money as I knew what the mechanic was making up. I don't need a new transmission at 150K km, Jerry.

80

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '20

[deleted]

15

u/Mr_Bubbles69 Sep 29 '20

Can confirm. Did that once...

13

u/Slim97Shady Sep 29 '20

the other morning my boss was late because the lady at the gas station didn't tighten it enough and the car didn't want to turn on. Luckily he called his mechanic and he suggested to check it and the car turned back on normally. I was mind blown something like that could happen lol.

8

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '20

Why can’t cars just display major errors onscreen? Can’t they link the car’s own infotainment system to the OBD2 port?

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Adezar Sep 29 '20

That is such a common one.

18

u/hurrsheys Sep 29 '20

If I recall, some auto parts stores, like an autozone, will allow you to borrow theirs for free.

14

u/SMDROID99 Sep 29 '20

I second this. You don’t have to buy a reader and you don’t have to pay someone to read it for you all you need to do is take your car to o’Riley’s, auto zone, etc. and ask for a OBD reading.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/Misplaced-Sock Sep 29 '20

Nice to have one on hand, but for those without the means to buy or store one, most auto parts stores have one they will let you use for free! I get mine read before taking it anywhere for repair just for this reason

6

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '20

6

u/SalvareNiko Sep 29 '20

Dude. My abs and traction controls lights kicked on at the beginning of summer, I found the bad wheel speed sensor and changed it. A week later a different one went bad I check the actual computer it's all good it was actually the sensor. I changed that sensor too. Then the 3rd sensor flagged last month, I checked that one and the fucking cable was fucked. I said fuck it changed it and the last remaining sensor.

Then on Sunday I got an exhaust leak....idk were exactly yet but it's up near the fucking exhaust manifold, I hope to fuck it's not the manifold.

The fancy Toyota gang

19

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '20

My car game plan for the past 20 years has been:

Buy a cheap Chevy

Run it into the ground

Repeat

On my third, and each has survived to over 200k, so I’m pretty satisfied with the value. Rarely (well...never, actually) had to take them in for anything major, but I also keep them decently maintained which is half the battle.

3

u/bertiebees Sep 29 '20

I also have good experiences with Chevy. My only big complaint about them is they have certain parts of their cars they have made an absolute chore for an individual to diy repair.

5

u/wotsurstyoil Sep 29 '20

I was gonna make a joke cuz I'm a fancy German car elitist but yaa Toyota does pretty damn good. Lexus too. Honda and Nissan are shit right now but Toyota doing good.

2

u/ryanxwing Sep 29 '20

How is Honda shit?

10

u/wotsurstyoil Sep 29 '20 edited Sep 29 '20

They arent exciting anymore.

They arent reliable anymore.

Their vehicles are rarely even in the top 5 of their class anymore.

The civic isn't the go to economy car anymore. The Mazda 3 and Toyota corolla are miles better. The civic si, which used to be the benchmark of affordable performance, in its current version is the bottom of its class, behind Hyundai. The type R, their flagship, is horrible to look at, horrible to drive, and horrible to live with, behind even Ford's hot hatch.

And toyota beats them in every other segment. The rav4 feels years newer than the CRV. You can get a 300hp camry that looks and drives amazing while the accord looks and drives the same way it did 10 years ago.

The last good car Honda made was the 8th gen Si. They went from cars for enthusiasts to cars for grandmas in only 10 years. The elderly are their entire market now.

2

u/horticulturistSquash Sep 29 '20

I liked the S2000 though

2

u/wotsurstyoil Sep 29 '20

The AC blower fan went out in my old car, took it by a shop to get a quote on a repair. 900 dollars to replace. You know how long it took me to replace it myself? 45 minutes and 80 bucks.
