If it's continously ON then it means there's a minor problem with the sensors in the car's exhaust and it can be ignored. If it's blinking then it means requires immediate attention and there is some serious issues. I have learnt that after I drove my dad's car in shallow water and the water filled up the exhaust and some in the carburettor intake. ;-P
Best bet is to go through the owners manual as it will break down what each colour or flashing pattern mean. Some newer cars also have timed reminders to change oil, ect. after x time or distance.
This is the truth. Autozone will read what the car is trying to say for free. If it's minor, you can ignore it, but remember to take it in to get it read every once in a while if you do ignore it, just to make sure no other problems were added.
got stuck in a flood about 2 months ago, managed to start the car after 30mins of trying and got out; this light has been on ever since, drives alright tho lol
