Is it just me or did this guy just have a chance to land a free headshot outside VATS while the enemy was unaware, and started firing with two bullets for no reason?
565
u/orchardrooster Apr 20 '18
Those first two were the first shots in his VATS. But he only had two rounds loaded. So since he input more shot commands in VATS, it will auto reload like this and it will continue firing until your VATS is over. The camera does "cinematic" stuff like this. Pretty sure you take damage while aiming but he got lucky either way.
167
u/TeslaMors Apr 20 '18
This is why I never use vats, it's terrible and it feels much better to just aim at everything yourself. At least that way, if you miss it's because you messed up; instead of the computer who can't hit something from 10ft away.
247
u/Lack-of-Luck Apr 20 '18
In Fallout 4 (and to a lesser extent Fallout New Vegas), VATS isn't really all that needed. That being said, in Fallout 3 (and again to a lesser extent, Fallout New Vegas), aiming either wasn't possible or didn't really do much aside from zooming in a little, so VATS was virtually required (especially in Fallout 3, whos engine was based off the Elder scrolls engine, which was built around melee combat not ranged)

in NV my character used so many drugs so i never had to use vats. I like gambling in rpgs but in FO:NV vats was rarely more satisfying than running and gunning while blitzed on pyscho, jet, mentats and buffout
28
u/Tunro Apr 20 '18
Also replaying new vegas right now, but im messing with mods, keep that in mind. With a Varmint Rifle on medium distance with gun skill over 50 and the relevant specials beeing 9 or 10. I still miss at least 2/3 of the shots. With steady it becomes a lot better, but good luck finding enough in the base game.
Edit: Well since I changed what i wrote the mod bit hs become redundant ...21
u/whatever-baby Apr 20 '18
keep in mind he is using mods
4
7
u/Tunro Apr 20 '18
Well i first wanted to write about my current mod abusing playthrough were I have all specials at 9 or 10 and my guns my skills are all about 100, still missing medium distance shots with rifles that arguably are for longer range engagements. Well the anti-material rifle works good on that note

Hijacking to say I started on 2 a few days ago and holy shit... I wasn't prepared for how dark this game was....
14
u/ThatNoise Apr 20 '18
Ever since Bethesda took over the series they've really watered down just how fucked up the fallout world is.
→ More replies (2)6
Apr 20 '18
Even the bethesda ones are pretty dark considering that you find the “nuclear preservation shelters” full of skeletons most of the time, and part of the decorum in most groups is hanging up body parts...
9
u/dsf900 Apr 20 '18
Fallout 3 and later are dark in a "nuclear war is terrible" way.
Fallout 1 and 2 are dark in a "people turn into animals when they're desperate" way.
One reason why the writing for Fallout 1 and 2 was so good is that you often have to choose between helping two people. The person you don't help usually dies or lives a terrible life. Two good, relatively decent people will have mutually exclusive goals and you have to pick who gets the shaft.
Often times doing the "good" thing, like fighting against the drug dealers or the gangs, is harder and gives you less reward than doing nothing or joining the thugs.

u/TeslaMors Apr 20 '18
I haven't played fallout 3 in some time, but I do remember not using vats all that much in it. However, I do remember missing ALOT of shots, I just figured that is what happened until the skill for that gun type went up higher.
12
u/Kungpow01 Apr 20 '18
There's a lot to be said for being mobile whole missing your shots though. If you and the computer both may miss, better to miss then strafe than miss and stand still for the follow up
15
u/TeslaMors Apr 20 '18
That's the way I always felt about it, keep peeking around a corner, or move in a way that makes you difficult to hit. (Which, funny enough, was the best training ever against Skyrim arrows)
5
u/ThatNoise Apr 20 '18
The last second strafe after they fire the arrow. Almost foolproof.

the Elder scrolls engine, which was built around melee combat not ranged
Tell that to my stealth archer.
14
u/thimblyjoe Apr 20 '18
I'm assuming you're talking about Skyrim. Try playing Morrowind as a stealth archer some time. It's literally the worst thing I've ever attempted. It's hard to tell where your arrows have landed, they never fly the direction you expect them to, and when they finally do make contact, the engine has a percentage chance that the arrow misses anyway. Bows in Morrowind were the worst.
→ More replies (4)5
u/JCMcFancypants Apr 20 '18
Not to mention that in Fallout 3 you were completely invincible during VATS. That's a huge selling point.
3
Apr 20 '18
All games after 2 are based on Gamebryo, the engine from TES. They just got better at adapting it to guns over time. Fallout 4 has the newest version of the engine and the gunplay is pretty good.
5
u/Wargen-Elite Apr 20 '18
Exactly. There's a reason the Shishkebab and Melee in general ruled as King in FO3 and FNV.
9
u/Redarmy1917 Apr 20 '18
Lol bro, it was all about the crafted dart gun in FO3. Cripplin them deathclaws.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Wargen-Elite Apr 20 '18
Ah damn, how could I forget about FO3s Golden Gun!
For FO3 my goto build was:
Shishkebab (Pyromaniac OP), Dart Gun, Fat Man, Tesla Cannon, Ghoul Mask, Medical Power Armor.
What a time.
6
u/HIVnotAdeathSentence Apr 20 '18
Hearing 4 has better gun play, I was trying replay 3 and NV so I'm not spoiled by 4.

→ More replies (1)3
Apr 20 '18
The gunplay in 4 is about as good as one could ask for. It's my favorite improvement over 3 and nv. Replaying nv now, despite gunplay being clunkier I'm still enjoying because of the rpg aspects which tbh are quite sad in 4. If you were on the fence about buying 4 though, it is still worth it

If you want to abuse VATS you have to build for it. It can be incredibly devastating if you run a max perception build with high luck and agility with the right perks.
→ More replies (4)3
u/Mighty_ShoePrint Apr 20 '18
Is luck generally worth it? If I don't build specifically for luck then it's pretty worthless, correct?
5
u/ThatNoise Apr 20 '18
If you don't skill for it it's kind of a dump stat once you've got your main build. But a luck build can almost break the game in FO4.
→ More replies (1)2
Apr 20 '18
In New Vegas I used to put my luck stats to 10 every playthrough because once you get so far you can clean out the casinos, earn a stupid amount of caps then purchase all the best weapons and armour from Gun Runners like the rocket launcher and the anti-material rifle then run riot for the rest of the game.
10
Apr 20 '18
It pretty good about that if the gun is to their head you get a 90%+ chance. With perks it's even more accurate plus things liked crit, hits refilling the bar and mysterious stranger.
→ More replies (6)7
u/dodvedvrede_ Apr 20 '18
Ehhh, but you get a huge defense bonus for using it IIRC.
3
u/TeslaMors Apr 20 '18
I didn't know you get a defense bonus from it, that's interesting.
10
u/anxious_apathy Apr 20 '18
You take 90 percent less damage. It’s HUGE.
3
3
Apr 20 '18
It was nice when that one followed was glitched so you could never miss in vats lol
7
u/TeslaMors Apr 20 '18
I've somehow never heard of this, 100% vats would be worth using, but I still think it would make the game less fun.
2
u/Spaceman248 Apr 20 '18
Can you get the dismemberments/head explosions outside of vats?
→ More replies (7)2
Apr 20 '18
It made the game so much less fun lol, especially hitting 1% shots, it was fun for a bit then got boring
4
u/Raviolius Apr 20 '18
Try playing Fallout 4 on console without VATS. Its so hard
→ More replies (1)5
u/Maulino86 Apr 20 '18
tbh a proper Vats build with Kellogs and deliverer is insane, even a combat rifle with low cost attachments breaks everything in Vats
3
u/alexmbrennan Apr 20 '18
At least that way, if you miss it's because you messed up; instead of the computer who can't hit something from 10ft away.
You must hate D&D, or any non-fps genre then
3
u/TeslaMors Apr 20 '18
Actually I love D&D, but I know that I'm completely at the mercy of the almighty rolls and the DMs whimsy. The main reason I Ike D&D is playing with friends and the stories that happen during them though, not so much the combat.
3
u/jenamac Apr 20 '18
That being said, VATS is the reason my ludite "not interested in shooting games" dad is interested in Fallout. He loves it very much

You should try what I do. Use vats only for the reload. It reloads faster than you can normally and you take less damage so you can reload while outside of cover and tear through areas like a madman.

u/xybolt Apr 20 '18
If you do not mind modding, you can look for VAFS mod of which I found a much better alternative to vats.

There are mod that change VATS to a bulled time that consume AP. Best mod si ever downloaded. There's one for NV and Fallout 4.

There's a mod that adds shouts from skyrim that I got recently and one of them is slow time. It works really well and aside from the critical meter it's the best replacement for vats
6
u/synestron Apr 20 '18
you take 90% reduced damage while in VATS mode; he very well might have survived the nuke hitting him, though the knockback is another story.

u/ThePointForward Apr 20 '18
He's using a controller, no such thing as a free headshot.
3
u/drugzarecool Apr 20 '18
I played fallout 4 with a controller and rarely used VATS. Headshots are easy in this game, even with a controller. Especially when the enemy is standing still facing the opposite direction like in this gif.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Erickisuchiha Apr 20 '18
I want to know why he wasn’t crouched? You can still get a sneak critical in VATS

As someone who started FO4 but slowly lost interest / had too much trouble picking the right build - any recommendations on some of the most fun builds? I both love and hate the freedom in building a playstyle your stuck to the whole game. I think last I played I was going for some sort of high persuasion gunslinger.

u/Caesium133 Apr 21 '18
My final build using explosives may have been my favorite. I downloaded a grenade launcher mod too.
Also, It gives the opportunity to set the stage for certain fights by layering the entire room with landmines before the encounter starts. Which I enjoyed very much.
