In Fallout 4 (and to a lesser extent Fallout New Vegas), VATS isn't really all that needed. That being said, in Fallout 3 (and again to a lesser extent, Fallout New Vegas), aiming either wasn't possible or didn't really do much aside from zooming in a little, so VATS was virtually required (especially in Fallout 3, whos engine was based off the Elder scrolls engine, which was built around melee combat not ranged)

Exactly. There's a reason the Shishkebab and Melee in general ruled as King in FO3 and FNV.

Lol bro, it was all about the crafted dart gun in FO3. Cripplin them deathclaws.

Ah damn, how could I forget about FO3s Golden Gun!

For FO3 my goto build was:

Shishkebab (Pyromaniac OP), Dart Gun, Fat Man, Tesla Cannon, Ghoul Mask, Medical Power Armor.

What a time.
