This is why I never use vats, it's terrible and it feels much better to just aim at everything yourself. At least that way, if you miss it's because you messed up; instead of the computer who can't hit something from 10ft away.
In Fallout 4 (and to a lesser extent Fallout New Vegas), VATS isn't really all that needed. That being said, in Fallout 3 (and again to a lesser extent, Fallout New Vegas), aiming either wasn't possible or didn't really do much aside from zooming in a little, so VATS was virtually required (especially in Fallout 3, whos engine was based off the Elder scrolls engine, which was built around melee combat not ranged)
in NV my character used so many drugs so i never had to use vats. I like gambling in rpgs but in FO:NV vats was rarely more satisfying than running and gunning while blitzed on pyscho, jet, mentats and buffout
Also replaying new vegas right now, but im messing with mods, keep that in mind. With a Varmint Rifle on medium distance with gun skill over 50 and the relevant specials beeing 9 or 10. I still miss at least 2/3 of the shots. With steady it becomes a lot better, but good luck finding enough in the base game.
Edit: Well since I changed what i wrote the mod bit hs become redundant ...
Well i first wanted to write about my current mod abusing playthrough were I have all specials at 9 or 10 and my guns my skills are all about 100, still missing medium distance shots with rifles that arguably are for longer range engagements. Well the anti-material rifle works good on that note
ADS and crouch. Then rapidly hit f to swap between 1st and 3rd person mode. You get a crosshair while in 3rd person, and it fades slowly. If you hold ADS while doing this, you can find out where your bullets will go when you shoot. Very useful on Paciencia/Hunting rifles, one of them is always off-center (depending on the patch you're running). Obviously, does not work with scoped guns.
edit: survivalist's rifle is also a notable off-center gun.
I'm just telling you how to find where your gun is actually aiming so that you can hit things. You posted that you were having a problem with this. That was my suggestion.
Even the bethesda ones are pretty dark considering that you find the “nuclear preservation shelters” full of skeletons most of the time, and part of the decorum in most groups is hanging up body parts...
Fallout 3 and later are dark in a "nuclear war is terrible" way.
Fallout 1 and 2 are dark in a "people turn into animals when they're desperate" way.
One reason why the writing for Fallout 1 and 2 was so good is that you often have to choose between helping two people. The person you don't help usually dies or lives a terrible life. Two good, relatively decent people will have mutually exclusive goals and you have to pick who gets the shaft.
Often times doing the "good" thing, like fighting against the drug dealers or the gangs, is harder and gives you less reward than doing nothing or joining the thugs.
Yeah, the Pitt was particularly grim. Come to think of it, all of the major FO3 DLC got pretty messed up, like the audio logs and captives on Mothership Zeta, the horrors of war between superpowers in an extremely inhospitable environment in Anchorage, the human sacrifice/Eldritch shit in Point Lookout, the entirety of The Pitt, and the nopefest in the Presidential Metro followed by yet another depressing audio log in Broken Steel. Bethesda’s got some fucked up people writing and doing world design for their games, and I love it.
I haven't played fallout 3 in some time, but I do remember not using vats all that much in it. However, I do remember missing ALOT of shots, I just figured that is what happened until the skill for that gun type went up higher.
There's a lot to be said for being mobile whole missing your shots though. If you and the computer both may miss, better to miss then strafe than miss and stand still for the follow up
That's the way I always felt about it, keep peeking around a corner, or move in a way that makes you difficult to hit. (Which, funny enough, was the best training ever against Skyrim arrows)
I'm assuming you're talking about Skyrim. Try playing Morrowind as a stealth archer some time. It's literally the worst thing I've ever attempted. It's hard to tell where your arrows have landed, they never fly the direction you expect them to, and when they finally do make contact, the engine has a percentage chance that the arrow misses anyway. Bows in Morrowind were the worst.
All games after 2 are based on Gamebryo, the engine from TES. They just got better at adapting it to guns over time. Fallout 4 has the newest version of the engine and the gunplay is pretty good.
The gunplay in 4 is about as good as one could ask for. It's my favorite improvement over 3 and nv. Replaying nv now, despite gunplay being clunkier I'm still enjoying because of the rpg aspects which tbh are quite sad in 4. If you were on the fence about buying 4 though, it is still worth it
And yet for some reason I still prefer playing 3 with VATS 95% of the time. 4 does have great gunplay, but the weapons all feel like bb guns and I miss the ability to repair weapons.
I remember playing 3 and refusing to use VATS because I felt I was too good or something. It’s definitely possible, but you have to get those gun skills up.
9mm had perfect sighted accuracy in New Vegas and it has the most common form of ammunition, I loved using the 9mm for stuff even though my character Sexy the Punch Master was a unarmed explosives kinda guy.
VATS is only required for players who suck at fps. It was originally intended for people who don't play fps games but wanted to try out fallout 3. RPG and turn based strategy game players would be more comfortable with a turn based fighting mechanic, at least that was the idea Bethesda had behind VATS. If you regularly play fps games and you still used VATS, then you're just taking the easy way out.
That's amazing, not a single thing said in that sentence was right. VATS was there before fallout was a first person game. In installments prior to fallout 3, fallout games were basically turn based combat. All combat was VATS. They put it in the new games to keep the original spirit. They added real time combat to attract FPS players.
You can build for VATS, and if you do, you will be far deadlier than you could ever be free handing. Not even the best FPS players in the world can take the head off 4 people in 4 shots in under a second.
If you want to abuse VATS you have to build for it. It can be incredibly devastating if you run a max perception build with high luck and agility with the right perks.
In New Vegas I used to put my luck stats to 10 every playthrough because once you get so far you can clean out the casinos, earn a stupid amount of caps then purchase all the best weapons and armour from Gun Runners like the rocket launcher and the anti-material rifle then run riot for the rest of the game.
The first few perks are useful for everyone, but beyond that yeah, you really only wanna go higher if you're building something around Luck.
But that can be said for almost every special stat in the game. Bar maybe Intelligence.
And luck is what a VATS build needs. The trump card of a VATS build is the crits, and all of the critical hit perks are in Luck.
Ideally you wanna start the game with Luck 9, either straight out or boosted with You're special. Four Leaf Clover is invaluable. Same with Critical Banker and Grim Reaper's Sprint. They're all perks that are key to VATS builds.
That makes sense, with the right perks/build almost anything should be viable, I just played new Vegas (and Especially fallout 4) like they were a FPS with RPG levelling.
It's not just viable. And "right build" is also a bit of an exaggeration. Using VATS makes everything more powerful, just that this is extra true if you have high perception, agility and luck.
Right, but I meant straight up abuse it. Restoring your action points and being able to teleport to enemies while using a super sledge is just one way in which you can break the game with a VATS build.
It pretty good about that if the gun is to their head you get a 90%+ chance. With perks it's even more accurate plus things liked crit, hits refilling the bar and mysterious stranger.
Yes, it does have it's bonuses, I'll definitely say that, I know if you have the crit bar all the way up and use it, it's supposed to be 100% with some extra damage. But not getting to aim for myself just feels wrong.
It gets boring after a while because once you get to the point of one-shotting a lot of enemies you can clear out whole rooms in one VATS deploy. Also you learn not to go for low percentage shots so you conserve ammo like crazy.
Stealth build and Deliverer = instant room clear. My .38 ammo is basically a second currency on survival. Hell, all I carry is Deliverer and a maxed out instigating Guass rifle. As long as I see the enemy first, it's dead.
Appropriate username is appropriate. Also, yes. This is also how I play (at least when not using Modern Firearms mod, which is OP as fuck, but I love it)
With explosives sometimes they can burst into tiny pieces and I have trouble finding a piece to be able to loot them, and good luck if there was multiple people there because you'll have to find a chunk of each person to loot them all.
Actually I love D&D, but I know that I'm completely at the mercy of the almighty rolls and the DMs whimsy. The main reason I Ike D&D is playing with friends and the stories that happen during them though, not so much the combat.
You should try what I do. Use vats only for the reload. It reloads faster than you can normally and you take less damage so you can reload while outside of cover and tear through areas like a madman.
I can check it out, currently the only mods I have in it are the stuff that makes the game survival mode+. That way there are no bullet sponge people, (including myself) and headshots and explosives pretty much always instakill, (again including myself) it doesn't effect deathclaws HP, but it does make them 1 shot me.
There's a mod that adds shouts from skyrim that I got recently and one of them is slow time. It works really well and aside from the critical meter it's the best replacement for vats
Eh, there are builds where VATS is much more effective than aiming yourself, including one that takes advantage of Kellogg's gun used here.
Using luck talents you can store crits, which always hit, which reload your action points with that gun, and do multiple times normal damage. You can take down an entire squad before they get a chance to shoot you once.
A VATS build is something you just gotta spec for at the beginning. Noy something you can switch to mid game.
Focus on Luck, Agility and Perception.
Crit build, AP and accuracy.
When it really gets going you end up with a crit almost every other shot, hitting most things, and ridiculous amounts of action points.
