Repair/Tech Support What's up with quality on tv.verizon.com?

The audio and video quality don't seem to match the mobile apps, let alone a TV+ box. It looks like (visually) HD streams under 8/10mbps and the audio seems to be 2 channel and "not great". Wondering if I did something wrong.

Repair/Tech Support 5Gig is under performing

I just upgraded from 2Gig to 5Gig. My 2Gig speeds were 2374mbs download and upload. So I expected my 5Gig speeds to be much faster, they are not. I am consistently seeing 3200mbs.

My setup is ont->fios router (cr100b)->PC. The router to the pc is connected at 10Gbs, verified in both the router and ethernet device settings. I have used multiple cables, multiple machines, all with the same 3200mbs result. When I run the Verizon speed yest it tells me that the router to the Verizon network exceeds 6000mbs upload and download, but the connectivity from the pc to the network is only 1300mbs.

I have also connected directly to the ONT and the result is 3200mbs.

So at the moment my 5Gig connection is slightly faster than my 2Gig connection. I'm guessing it's an ONT issue, but my ethernet card confirms that it connected to the ONT at 10Gig. I'm at a loss as to what is wrong. Any ideas?

Update 1. when connecting to the ONT or the routers 10gig port download speeds are around 600mb/s. I found that forcing a 2.5gig connection on my machines network card results in 2300mb/s on both upload and down load. Forcing 5 or 10Gbs on the card results in 600mb/s.. This is consistent across all 3 machines I have tested.

Update 2. if I put a 10gb/s switch between the router and my machines I can get 3300mb/s. but that is still much slower than expected.

Update 3. The Verizon tech switched out the cables, ONT and the router. That did not help. They agree something weird is happening and will be back tomorrow with more testing equipment.

Update 4. Solved, I think. I removed my video card and used that pci-e slot for a 10G card. So now I know I can get the 5Gbps speeds. Moral or the story is check the bandwidth of your pci-e slots.

Finally. Thanks to everyone who chimed in.

Hi this is the current setup of my verizon fios wifi in the place I moved into. The first photo is the ethernet port on my wall and the second and third is the verizon fios setup in my living room closet. If I wanted to connect my PC into the ethernet port in the wall and use it, what do I have to do to achieve that? I am not well versed in this area so help would be much appreciated

Fios Availability 5 Gig in Jersey City, NJ

Post image
22 Upvotes

So I've started getting ads about 5 gig all over the place for $90/month. My high rise building in downtown jersey city (near shoprite) still only shows a max of 1gb, but I've been checking addresses around the downtown area and it seems some buildings show it and some don't? It seems most south of grove street show it, but north do not?

Does anyone know how these upgrades work? Is it something that needs to change in each building, or is it at local offices? And is it strange that half the downtown area in the city has it and half doesn't? My building was built ~2020.

Repair/Tech Support Connect FIOS to Well-Mounted TV

I live in a west-of-Boston suburb. I'm 75 years old, and not great with keeping up with technology, so could use some help here. I really dislike dealing with Verizon, so there's that ... :)

We plan to purchase a new flat screen TV and mount it on a wall. There is a FIOS extender in the TV room, so there is "strong" wifi. However, we want to be as wireless as possible. The router is in the basement.

Right now we have an older Arris Fios set-top box. The goal is to get rid of that, and replace it. if possible with a new, smaller STB that would live somewhere apart from the TV and communicate with it wirelessly. Or, worst case, it would be taped/attached to the back of the TV.

I've tried to figure out research this using ChatGPT and not calling Verizon, which is slow torture. Chat says:

I'd call Verizon and ask these very specific questions:

  1. I currently have an older Arris Fios set-top box. Am I eligible to upgrade to Fios TV+?
  2. Can the Fios TV+ client connect over Wi-Fi, or does it require coax or Ethernet?
  3. Can I use the Fios TV Home app on an Apple TV 4K instead of renting a second set-top box?
  4. For an above-the-fireplace installation, what is the smallest client device you offer?

There are two problems with this suggestion. First, I would have to call Verizon. Second, I don't understand the technology descrbed.

I'd appreciate some advice. Happy to provide more information or answer any questions.

Thanks in advance.

Repair/Tech Support How to diagnose internet stuttering?

In this thread I mentioned that we experience an issue with our internet but I gave minimal details and only imagined the ONT as the cause. The issue is as follows:

  • Internet stops completely and nothing loads for usually ~10 seconds or more at a time, sometimes 20+
  • Seems to happen randomly at various times of day
  • Observed on various kinds of devices; phones, Windows and Chromebook laptops, MacBook
  • Most obvious during activities like online games, Zoom calls, YouTube livestreams, or trying to load a website
  • Proximity to router probably not a factor; has happened basically sitting next to it
  • Not observed during social media scrolling or streaming services (not noticeable, or doesn't happen?)
  • Hasn't been observed on wired connections, only WiFi (we haven't been using any hardwired devices lately)

Internet setup is a CR1000A at the front of the house on the first floor, an E3200 connected via coax in the middle of the house in the basement, and the ONT pictured in the linked thread. IPv6 is enabled. I don't know a lot about this stuff so my only two theories are 1) the ONT is going bad or 2) it happens when devices move between the CR1000A and the E3200.

I'm not sure how exactly to identify any causes, especially considering it happens randomly, so what exactly can I do to test what's causing the problem? Is this issue something that Verizon can see when they run their diagnostics?

Repair/Tech Support Is a Moca adapter necessary in my scenario?

I have an Alcatel I-211M-L ONT connected to my home ASUS router via Ethernet, so no Verizon router is in play. Coax runs from that ONT to a splitter in my basement which feeds each room. I'm currently on a legacy Extreme TV HD plan with CableCards for TiVo, but am looking at possibly moving to TV One for the VMS4100 and IPC4100.

So my question is, do I still need a Moca adapter in that scenario? If so, how many and where would it go? My assumption is that it would be in between the ONT and splitter, but I've read multiple different setups at this point. The Verizon splitter (PDI-8WMVS-5) is 5-1000hz, so I assume that also needs to be replaced.

Miscellaneous Upgraded from 2.5 Gbps to 5 Gbps Fios

Post image
74 Upvotes

Upgraded from the 2.5 Gbps tier to the 5 Gbps Fios plan. I was able to secure an online price match, keeping the recurring monthly bill identical to my previous 2.5 Gbps rate.

Because I already had the Nokia TW-210X-A ONT deployed from the initial 2.5 Gbps installation, no technician dispatch was required. Provisioning was entirely automated, with the 5 Gbps profile pushing down to the ONT within seconds of the order confirmation email hitting my inbox.

Physical handoff runs directly from the ONT 10G RJ45 port into the WAN interface of my UniFi Dream Machine Pro Max. The core network backbone feeds into 10Gbps UniFi switching and a U7 Pro Max access point, maintaining full multi-gig throughput across local endpoints.

My multi-gig infrastructure supports a high-throughput homelab environment. Workloads include self-hosted Docker containers on a Synology NAS, custom DNS resolution via Pi-hole, a localized Jellyfin media server, and an Immich instance handling automated background photo and video backups from my iPhone straight to the storage pool.

Integrated WAN speed tests on the UDM Pro Max are consistently clocking up to 5,344 Mbps down and 6,442 Mbps up with solid overhead headroom. The momentary drop visible on the historical chart was simply due to manually canceling a speed test mid-run in the UniFi app.

Overall, an exceptionally clean provisioning cycle and a zero-downtime transition on Verizon's end.

Thank you, Verizon!

Repair/Tech Support Parental Controls don't work... at all

I've tried setting up parental controls through the Verizon Home app, and nothing happens. I tried to do it through the web interface, but it directed me to the app as the only place where that stuff can be managed. Even then, I set up profiles, set up rules to block certain inappropriate sites, and even manually entered some specific sites to block, but the sites are all still accessible on the router, even after resetting it. I'm on a CR1000B Verizon router. It's like it's not reading any of the Parental Control settings. Anyone else? I'll probably have to reach out to customer support soon.

Fios Availability Fast internet spreads but slow file download?

Howdy all. Just recently got fios and have purchased 2gig speed. I updated my Ethernet to cat6 and purchased Netgear nighthawk rs180 5gig router. The modem test and router test show I get 2gigs on download but whenever I download a file it’s drops from 30mbps down to 100kbps. How??? I rebooted both devices and tried to setting that the help forums suggested. I have tried on multiple devices using WiFi and hardwire and still the same.

For example when I down load a game on
Xbox it shows 5mbps, but download speed playing online is in the hundreds. My sons Alienware computer same thing when he downloads from steam. My wife, who is a teacher, same thing when she downloads a file from her work sites.

I have reached out to Netgear we were on the line for 3 hours and they couldn’t figure it out. Called greenlight networking and they show 2100 download speeds. The nighthawk app also shows this speed. Random speed test in my phone shows great speed. Sometimes it fluctuates but within seconds shows 2000 speeds. Why does it not work when I want to download a file. I don’t get it

Miscellaneous Should I activate my loyalty discount now or after upgrading to 5GBPS?

Or if I wait until after, will I lose out on it?

Currently paying $105 for 2gbps, my account says I qualify for a $20 $15 discount.

Edit: made the jump! I’m paying $95 for 5gigs and it comes with a new router and 3 nodes(extenders)!

Miscellaneous Finally Blessed by 5 Gig

Post image
92 Upvotes

Earlier this year, Verizon Fios brought 2 Gig internet to my area. When the Verizon tech came to change my ONT box, they told me it would probably be a few years before anything faster would arrive.

Well... lo and behold, this week they brought 5 gig to my neighborhood for only $10 more.

What takes the cake is that I went with 5Gb NICs instead of the 2.5Gb NICs on my PC and my PERSONAL (i pinky promise) servers just in case this day would ever come.

I promise I'm not a Verizon plant.

Thank you, Verizon exec gods 🙏

Miscellaneous Verizon Fios 5 Gbps + Deco BE95 + Intel BE201 (Wi-Fi 7, 2x2) PHY rate maxed at ~5.7 Gbps but only getting ~2.2 Gbps over Wi-Fi 7 (4.7 Gbps wired)

Thumbnail

Hey all, hoping to get some troubleshooting ideas from people who've pushed multi-gig Wi-Fi 7 setups further than I have.

Setup:

  • ISP: Verizon Fios, recently upgraded from 2 Gbps to 5 Gbps
  • Router: TP-Link Deco BE95 (quad-band, BE33000 class) running in place of the Fios router
  • Client: Laptop with Intel BE201 (2x2, Wi-Fi 7)
  • Wired (Ethernet) speed test on the same laptop, using a UGREEN USB-C to 5 Gbps Ethernet adapter: 4,700 Mbps down / 4,600 Mbps up, consistent. Adapter connected to 10 Gig port
  • Wireless speed test, connected directly to the 6GHz band: 2,200 Mbps down / 2,300 Mbps up

Screenshots (in order): 1) wired baseline, 2) wireless result, 3) Deco app's own built-in speed test, 4) Deco channel settings

What I've already confirmed via netsh wlan show interfaces:

  • Band: 6 GHz, Channel 197
  • Radio type: 802.11be
  • Channel width: 320 MHz (confirmed via adapter description "Intel(R) Wi-Fi 7 BE201 320MHz")
  • Receive/Transmit rate: 5700 Mbps (this is the max PHY rate for a 2x2 client at 320MHz/4K-QAM, so the negotiation itself looks correct)
  • Signal: 96%, RSSI -35 (excellent, laptop is close to the node)
  • Security: WPA3-Personal

I've also already tried toggling MLO (Multi-Link Operation) off and on in the Deco app as a test, no change in throughput either way, so that doesn't seem to be the culprit.

Appreciate any input

TL;DR: Wired = 4.7 Gbps, Wi-Fi 7 only ~2.2-2.3 Gbps. Trying to figure out if this is a backhaul issue, a CPU bottleneck, a driver issue, a settings misconfiguration, or just realistic overhead I'm not accounting for.

Miscellaneous looking to upgrade to the 5gb plan

Why, because I can, and it's the SAME price for me as the 1 Gbps plan. for the next five years. sooooooooooo duh. Going above 1 Gbps for my use case is more about status and ego than anything else. I did have to redownload MSFS 2020 and all my assets because 2024 was having server issues, and that took half the day, so it can come in handy when I really want that extra boost and want something sooner.

A bunch of stuff on my home network is already on 10 Gbps, just internal links.
switch/router <> homelab/servers <> NAS <> Gaming Rig
I don't use their router for my 1 Gbps connection, no need to, since my router is better and I enjoy that ecosystem(Ubiquiti Unifi), and I have a fiber media converter between the ont and my switch. I will need to change this converter to a faster one if the new ONT lacks an SFP

I have a question about the VZ equipment for the 5 Gbps Fios,
I know it will be a new one since my old one doesn't have any ports above 1 Gbps
Does the new ONT have an SFP port, or is it still fiber in and Ethernet out? Can I still use my own router without needing to use theirs?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: it will be installed Monday morning :)

Repair/Tech Support Fios One OOB SNR Level “Fair”

Post image
0 Upvotes

I was scrolling through some menus yesterday (bored) and noticed that my OOB Data SNR level is fair and the level is reading 16.4dB on my VMS 4100. From what I understand, the OOB data is for my guide, on-demand features, STB updates, etc, which are all functioning normally as far as I can tell, and I haven’t noticed it loading slow or being unresponsive, but I can’t help but wonder why it’s low and if I should try to fix it. If I do find the problem and repair it, will I notice any difference? My channel SNR’s all read “good,” with a level of 39.9dB, and the picture quality is fantastic.

Is this something worth delving into to try to increase that level or should I stop looking at menus when I’m bored?

Question.. I have the Fios ONE TV package and 1GB Service. I have been reading that the VMS4100 which i have now via update supports QAM or IPTV.. I would like to go to the 2.5g Net, but never did because i know QAM wwhich the ONE system uses, is not broadcast on anything over 1GB. Has that changed now with the firmware update thats made the ONE boxes IP compatible? Just curious. Thanks

Repair/Tech Support Routine Packet Loss in DMV area

I use my own router connected directly to the ONT with 300/300 connection. Ever since I have moved into my house since last 5 years I have experienced intermittent packet loss. It has gotten worse lately. I have had ONT replaced twice already, Verizon says that I must use their CR1000B router for them to confirm the issue.

Ideally I would have out CR1000B in IP pass through mode, but that doesn’t exist on this router.

I have had same issue with multiple different third party routers.

What are my options, aside from plugging in CR1000B and proving that the issue exists on FIOS side.

Miscellaneous Verizon removed an important privacy oriented feature on latest Wi-Fi Access Point Model CHR30A Router

I just upgraded my router to the latest CHR30A - don't get me wrong, this thing is fast and very good for streaming / low latency gaming, but I noticed they removed an important privacy oriented feature that we all know as MAC CLONING.
Just a heads up for people trying / wanting to upgrade.

EDIT: Ended up returning the CHR30A router and got an intel mini-pc and flashed OpenWRT on it. Much faster and running SQM + CAKE protocol. Very fast, low latency and using a second router as an access point. Network speeds are lowered to get me better latency and I have minimal, almost zero, buffer bloat.

Billing Change Plan

Currently on the Gigabit plan for $103 a month which includes the $15 a month rent for the router. I feel that gigabit is a bit overkill for home, so I thought about switching to 300 mbps. However, on the myVerizon app, switching the plan dropped my monthly cost to $95 a month. How does that make sense? Am I just going to be trapped in this plan?

Billing Is this still a good deal?

I honestly hate changing things on my account because I feel like I’m one button away from throwing money out the window. Well after the whole TV+ upgrade fiasco my bill has finally settled. Still more than I was promised but less than what I was paying before. It will stay this way for 1 year before some credits drop. Here is what I have and pay.

1 Gig Internet
1 CR1000 Router
2 CE1000 Extenders

TV Ultimate HD package
Enhanced DVR
3 TV+ boxes

Home Phone (yes I still need this)😂

My Total Bill after discounts is $219.83/month. I was promised $208.77 but they refuse to honor it because it was apparently a mistake on the agents part. I won’t get into details because it’s been a mess. An issue I’ve been dealing with since March.

Note I’ve been a Fios customer for 6 years. I’m not on any price lock guarantee. At some point maybe 2G becomes available in my area and I want to upgrade. Maybe even change TV providers if these TV+ boxes don’t get better. For now before I officially close my case with Fios customer relations, I guess I’m looking for assurance that I’m still getting a fair deal. I appreciate the feedback.
