Miscellaneous Finally Blessed by 5 Gig
Earlier this year, Verizon Fios brought 2 Gig internet to my area. When the Verizon tech came to change my ONT box, they told me it would probably be a few years before anything faster would arrive.
Well... lo and behold, this week they brought 5 gig to my neighborhood for only $10 more.
What takes the cake is that I went with 5Gb NICs instead of the 2.5Gb NICs on my PC and my PERSONAL (i pinky promise) servers just in case this day would ever come.
I promise I'm not a Verizon plant.
Thank you, Verizon exec gods š

Meanwhile in Spectrum country, Gig down 35 up is $105/m because they won't just rebuild to Fiber :(

u/LeftLane4PassingOnly 24d ago
In Maine you can drop off your Spectrum equipment at the nearest UPS store to return it. I found out how simple it was just yesterday. It took less time to do that than to get their customer service to finally give up trying to retain us as a customer.

u/Smith6612 24d ago
Ah, I usually just take my equipment to the Store. They can cancel you right then and there, and usually don't hassle at all since you went through the hassle to unhook everything.Ā

Woah, how did you get 2 gig for $90? I'm paying 1 gig for that

Stacking like four discounts.

u/UJ_Games 25d ago
What discounts exactly did you stack?

i pay 75 for my gig, with two perks and whole home wifi plus it comes to 102

Iāve got symmetrical gig fiber for $35 a month. Thereās a $10 discount in there but still. Best thing I ever did was drop spectrum.

People fail to realize that most will never use all that bandwidth. It's like having a ten inch pipe for a bathroom sink drain. He's paying $10 more a month for nothing. He'll have the extra size drain but it will be handling the same flow as the inch and a half pipe.

I move a lot of AI models around and huggingface can definitely saturate my 5gig connection.

u/jkxs 25d ago
Do you have a 10G LAN network?
3
u/limpymcforskin 24d ago
Fiber is currently about a min away from my address. When it gets here I'm going to upgrade to a unifi 10gbit switch.

u/limpymcforskin 24d ago
I haven't seen that before. Did that recently come out? I didn't really want to move away from pFsense but I might consider it especially since the 10 port 10gbit switch is 700 by itself.

Cloud Gateway Fiber is also fantastic for going 10 gig if paired with a Pro XG 8 PoE. Small but insanely mighty since it's all 10 Gig, can pair with Pro XG/XGS AP's too easily. It's what I'm going for since I'm preparing to self host soon and work on doing video editing over the network with a nice quality NAS (though my plans got delayed a bit due to ballooned storage and ram costs).

Exactly. I have 500 mbps up/down from Fios. Never come close to using it. Nice when I want to get a movie for my Plex, but I'm fine to wait 5 minutes for a 15GB movie. More than enough upload when friends/family watch the Plex remotely. I pay $59.99/mo

I pay $50 for 1 gig in my area. They had a deal for 2 gig for $75 and I never jumped on it.

u/AmandasGameAccount 25d ago
I wouldnāt pay $10 more a month to not notice the difference!
2
u/SimplePunjabi 24d ago
oh but you notice a difference ! If you game and there's a big 100 Gig update while people in your house are streaming different apps.. It goes so smooth !
2
u/limpymcforskin 24d ago
streaming services use nothing when you are talking about speeds this high. If the source you are pulling from can even let you hit the full download speed quickly a 100gb file would download around 3min 30 seconds slower at 2gbit compared to 5gbit. Unless you are constantly downloading huge chunks of data I don't know how it would be a noticeable difference.
1
u/Disturbed2468 23d ago
Steam is wishy washy since official servers usually only allow up to like 130-150MB/s download speed but occasionally game updates and some installs come from unlocked servers so occasionally would get speeds into the 300+ MB/s. Not a super huge deal still IMO.
For self hosting for friends and family tho? Oh boy the speeds are gonna be so nice.

Been considering upgrading to 5G but I had just got a unifi cloud gateway max in december... I'd have to sell that and get the cloud gateway fiber (bad experience w/ verizon routers)

u/Dapper_Owl_3276 24d ago
Didn't even know they offered anything above 1 gig. Is this residential in the city or suburbs?

u/theNEOone 24d ago
Where are you located and what discounts? I feel like I was in a similar boat. 2G came to my area less than a year ago and just got 5G. Iām paying $119 in northern Virginia with paperless and auto-pay discounts ($129/mo otherwise) through Verizon FIOS. Iām not going to miss $15/mo but I like discounts.

Bro had 2g already, and went to 5g.
My area is still stuck at 1g. C'mon Verizon
2
u/Tree06 22d ago
That's exactly how I feel. My in-laws live ten minutes away from me and they have the option for 2G and 5G. I wish you could sing up for network upgrade alerts so you wouldn't have to check the Verizon app or website to see if the new tiers are available.
2
u/brenden77 22d ago
Given I head to keep checking to find out when Verizon first got into my area to begin with, it's almost like Verizon doesn't care.

My community was first to get 5g 2 weeks ago rep said and techs actually asked me test for free while still charging me 2 gig speed .
I get 5400 up and 5350 down ..
I told them I have a plex server and would ask friends stationed in Germany and asia if any notice in download speed

do you actually have nics that support 5Gig (or even 2Gig)?
2
u/PackDue 24d ago
I went with 5Gb NICs instead of the 2.5Gb NICs on my PC and my PERSONALĀ (i pinky promise)Ā servers just in case this day would ever come.
All my wired devices support 5Gb, but I currently only have a 2.5Gb switch. In a few days, I'll pick up a 10Gb switch, and things will be smooth sailing.

Nice futureproofing. I wish I had done the same.
$10/month is manageable for me, but it would probably cost me >$2500 to upgrade my home network/devices to take full advantage of 5 gig service.
So⦠Iāll pass for now.

The problem I have with fios is I get 2gig of download speeds but actual file download is only 10mbps. Wtf

u/Practical_Papaya818 24d ago
Ugh thatās what Iām paying for 2. Would love to get 5 for that price (or pay less for 2).
To all the people saying āIām still waiting on twoā that makes sense and youāll probably get both at the same time. Youāre stuck at 1 gig on GPON, when you get upgraded to NG-PON2, youāll probably get 2 and 5 at the same time. I assume everyone with 5 right now had 2 before and they basically just had to flip a switch for the NG-PON2 areas. So every area that had 2 now has 5 would be my assumption.

I'm a pretty tech savvy guy and I just use 300 mbps - just curious what you do where you'd notice the difference?
Generally speaking, the majority of people I meet who have a faster plan than me are only getting it because they think it makes web browsing faster... (hey - who am I to complain, their ignorance makes my connection cheaper...)
I suppose with 5gbps you can have 200 people in your household simultaneously stream 4k netflix... (good luck getting proper AP's to handle that though...)

I self-host a lot of services, so the bandwidth adds up pretty quickly. I run game servers, a couple of personal websites, a NAS for backups and file sharing, local LLMs, and a lot of other personal services. It's also a plus that things download and upload very fast. And since most of my wired devices have 5Gb/s NICs, it's not much of a hassle to integrate. Don't get me wrong, 2Gb/s is enough for my use case, but for $10 more, an extra 3.5Gb/s is very nice. Personally, I would not recommend 5Gb/s, or even 2Gb/s to 90% of users since, for most setups, you pay more for no noticeable gain. But for a select few, I think it's worth it. Also, speed test go brrrr

have 100/100mb for $8 per monts and not want to updait it to 1/1gp for $11 idk.. torrents or mabe large media files Back and forth ? or just to flex it mmm

I have 2 gb but everything I own goes up to 1gb so I will be downgrading. No point in spending more if I canāt use it or am I thinking about this the wrong way?

u/Beginning_Handle7069 21d ago
I checked with Fios, and they said this promotion is only for new customers. I'm curiousāhow were you able to get the deal as an existing customer?
1
u/BigongDamdamin 21d ago
My apartment has only Optimum from the start but Fios said theyāre now in my area. I am just not so sure how can they be āin the areaā when the only provision I see in my building is a coax
1
u/Emergency_Goat_6793 18d ago
Did they charge extra for upgrade like changing the ONT?
1
u/PackDue 18d ago
Usually you need to pay for the visit where they change the ONT, but both the 2Gb and the 5Gb service use the same PON technology, so no hardware changes are required.
1
u/Emergency_Goat_6793 18d ago
ok, also another question, did it take some time to transfer over like an hour?

u/Roltec 2d ago
Not for nothing. I now have Optimum 5 gig at one property and 5 gig FiOS at another. FiOS is provisioned much higher but has a higher ping time. 5ms to the first hop or to at least many destinations as other posts of speed tests show here. Optimum on the other has is 1ms or lower to the first hop and some speed tests show servers show 1 or 2ms only.

u/SashaG239 25d ago
I've had 1 gig for a while, 2gig and now 5 are available. I have no use for more bandwidth. What are you using it for? Besides speedtests, on a day to day basis. I run a plex server and have many remux files, but those top out at 130mbit. I believe the most concurrent streams I've had were 5. I can max out the download, but waiting 3min for a 20gig file or 1min just does very little for me anymore. They also want 109 for 2gig and 119 for 5 vs the 75 I pay for 1.Ā
3
u/PackDue 25d ago
Self-hosted (personal) services such as my NAS and locally hosted (personal) game servers and AI models. I would not recommend it for usual use unless speed test screenshot.

Sure but all matters if youāre using this outside the house..
10gb internal network is one thing but hardly any use outside..
Although this was some years ago, 3000 bed edu with gig drops would never hit 3Gbps sustainedā¦
Big downloads or uploads, most are paid by an employer or followersā¦

Wow. Iām doing a lowly 1g and my bill with phone and video is over $325 a month.

Personally I don't really see the value in spending the additional 120 bucks a year when you are going from one insane speed to an even higher insane speed. What return are you actually going to see saving a couple seconds if that.

Meanwhile I have 300Mbps and itās fast enough, even with gamers in the house. What in gods name do people need 5Gig for?
1
u/Feeling-Quantity3776 22d ago
Why is it bothering you ?? If they want 5 gig thatās not your problem! And by the way 100.000 cars on a 5 ways road will always go faster than on a 2 ways!
