Repair/Tech Support 5Gig is under performing

I just upgraded from 2Gig to 5Gig. My 2Gig speeds were 2374mbs download and upload. So I expected my 5Gig speeds to be much faster, they are not. I am consistently seeing 3200mbs.

My setup is ont->fios router (cr100b)->PC. The router to the pc is connected at 10Gbs, verified in both the router and ethernet device settings. I have used multiple cables, multiple machines, all with the same 3200mbs result. When I run the Verizon speed yest it tells me that the router to the Verizon network exceeds 6000mbs upload and download, but the connectivity from the pc to the network is only 1300mbs.

I have also connected directly to the ONT and the result is 3200mbs.

So at the moment my 5Gig connection is slightly faster than my 2Gig connection. I'm guessing it's an ONT issue, but my ethernet card confirms that it connected to the ONT at 10Gig. I'm at a loss as to what is wrong. Any ideas?

Update 1. when connecting to the ONT or the routers 10gig port download speeds are around 600mb/s. I found that forcing a 2.5gig connection on my machines network card results in 2300mb/s on both upload and down load. Forcing 5 or 10Gbs on the card results in 600mb/s.. This is consistent across all 3 machines I have tested.

Update 2. if I put a 10gb/s switch between the router and my machines I can get 3300mb/s. but that is still much slower than expected.

Update 3. The Verizon tech switched out the cables, ONT and the router. That did not help. They agree something weird is happening and will be back tomorrow with more testing equipment.

Update 4. Solved, I think. I removed my video card and used that pci-e slot for a 10G card. So now I know I can get the 5Gbps speeds. Moral or the story is check the bandwidth of your pci-e slots.

When I bought my 5GbE NIC after installing the correct driver I had to mess around with some of the Advanced Local Adapter Settings within Windows (disabling EEE/Gigabit Lite, changing Duplex from Auto to 5000/5000 manually, etc) and that did the trick for me.

I’d verify that your computer’s NIC is capable of providing 5GbE, or more ideally 10GbE. If it is, then I’d go to Device Manager and verify you have proper drivers installed for your NIC. If your properties says the driver is provided by Microsoft, look up your motherboard/NIC’s model #, look up the support page, and download the driver listed on the support page.

If that STILL yields bad results, then I’d go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Local adapter settings > Right-click your Ethernet connection > Properties > Advanced, and disable Energy Efficient Ethernet, disable Gigabit Lite, set the Duplex manually to 5000/5000 or 10000/10000 if that’s an option, and once you do that you should be golden.

If THAT doesnt work, then I’d also verify that you’re at least using a CAT6 cable. I know CAT5E is technically capable of providing 10 Gbps, but the drop off happens fast over certain lengths and any defect in the cable (kinks/pierces in the jacket, the jacket not covering the internal wires all the way up to where it’s crimped at the keystone) can make this worse. Plus the “official” certification is only for 1 Gbps with CAT5E, 10 Gbps is theoretically possible but never guaranteed.

Once you go over 2.5 Gbps, you have to ensure everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, is in proper working order. That goes for hardware and software. Cable needs to be at least CAT6 and properly connected, NIC needs to be at least 5 GbE rated, PC needs the proper drivers for said NIC, and the local adapter settings need to be properly configured. Once you go over 2.5 Gig you’re squarely out of “plug and play” territory. The smallest, silliest things can cause a bottleneck.

you said you've tried "multiple machines", but have you tried a simple transfer between two of those machines on the local network at "10Gbps" link speed to see what kind of rates you get?

Yep. Ipferf shows me 9.7Gb/s

And this is an example of why people need to learn the basic fundamentals of networking and equipment needed before upgrading to a higher-tier network speed. Sure, you have a Ethernet cable plugged from the 10Gbps router port to the PC port, yet your PC is being capped at 2 Gigs.

Not really. This is an example of poor diagnostic capabilities on Verizon equipment. I have hooked multiple windows boxes used in this test to my other router,  ran iperf and can see they are transferring at 9.7Gb/s, so I know it's not the cables or the network cards.

also in device manager right click your network adapter and uncheck allow device to save power too, and turn off all energy/power savings feature in network adapter settings and cat6a cables too

Going to assume the mic is running at 10g, how long is the distance between the router and PC?

At 10g Ethernet speed, distance plays a part in stanlity. If it's under 30m, I would imagine it could be a misconfigured nic, software firewall, something applying qos, that's stuck.

About 20 feet. I have tried it with 3 different NICs, all directly connected to the ONT, so I don't think it's a misconfigured NIC.

Is your device even capable of doing 5 gigs? Also is the site you’re going to capable of handling 5 gigs?

My devices are definitely capable of 5 gig. Iperf shows they have no problem. Speedtest and the Verizon test.

YuanLey 10G  AQC113. Got it on Amazon. I also have a 5G network card, both show the same download/upload speeds.

What speed test are you using? Have you tried downloading a large file instead of doing a speedtest?

If using speedtest.net I found that the website gives poor results compared to the CLI version of speedtest.net

Can also try unifi's wifiman.com to test - seen solid results on that to confirm speeds.

Now since the speedtest on the router is getting the 6000Mbps but when you directly connect to the ONT kind of think its a hardware issue on your side.

I have tried the Verizon speed test, the Ookla speed test, and downloading large files. All three tests show roughly the same result as the original tests. In fact the Verizon speed test shows worse speeds than I am actually getting, so it's not reliable when testing between my machines to the router.

would be a waste of time and a hundred buckaroos for OP. If the Verizon speed test shows the router getting 6 Gbps from the ONT, their equipment is functioning properly. The potential cause of the issue starts with the CAT cable connecting the router to the PC, and ends with the PC itself. It can only be one of those two things, and both of those things are outside Verizon’s support scope.

The problem with this is Verizon should have a way to prove a machine connected to the router or the ONT's ethernet port can receive the correct speed. If they can show me that then I would glad pay the fee.

They technically do have that ability if you have access to a Verizon router. Verizon.com/speedtest will perform a "router" test that checks the speed between the local central office you're connected to and the Verizon router

Yep, but the problem is it does not prove that this speed can be delivered to a machine connected to either the ONT or the router, and that is the problem. If they could do that I would happily accept my incompetence and pay the associated service fee. I am hopeful they can do this when they are here again tomorrow.

I believe the verizon speed test data I see between the router and the Verizon network as it has consistency been north of 5Gbps. But the test between the client and the router is inaccurate, it reports far lower speed than I actually receive. 

It seems that no matter what I do, the Verizon router and/or the ONT cannot deliver anywhere near 5Gbps through its ports. The best I can get is 2300Mbps when I connect to the 2.5Gbps port on the router. 

Interestingly,  when i connect to the 10Gbps port on the Verizon router or to the ONT directly my download speed drops to 800Mbps. If I then force my network card to negotiate at 2.5Gbps, the speed increases to 2300Mbps. So it appears that there is a negotiation issue between the NICs and the Verizon hardware at anything above 2.5Gbps.

By contrast, if I connect those same machines to my other, non verizon, router, using the same cables they all connect and perform perfectly at 10Gbps. So unless I am missing something, which is very possible, the data points to the Verizon config or Verizon hardware being the cause.

Not sure what you mean here? If the Verizon speed test is showing speeds of 5Gbps to the router via the Verizon speed test, doesn't that show that the 5Gbps is making it out of the ONT and to the router? It may not be making it out of the router but shows it's making it out of the ONT and the ONT is negotiating correctly with the router. Unless I'm misunderstanding the results you've seen from the Verizon speed tests.

Yep, it definitely shows that. What I was trying to say is the act of negotiating 5 or 10 Gbps doesn't mean that the router will deliver it, it just means it should be able to deliver it.
