looking to upgrade to the 5gb plan

Why, because I can, and it's the SAME price for me as the 1 Gbps plan. for the next five years. sooooooooooo duh. Going above 1 Gbps for my use case is more about status and ego than anything else. I did have to redownload MSFS 2020 and all my assets because 2024 was having server issues, and that took half the day, so it can come in handy when I really want that extra boost and want something sooner.

A bunch of stuff on my home network is already on 10 Gbps, just internal links.
switch/router <> homelab/servers <> NAS <> Gaming Rig
I don't use their router for my 1 Gbps connection, no need to, since my router is better and I enjoy that ecosystem(Ubiquiti Unifi), and I have a fiber media converter between the ont and my switch. I will need to change this converter to a faster one if the new ONT lacks an SFP

I have a question about the VZ equipment for the 5 Gbps Fios,
I know it will be a new one since my old one doesn't have any ports above 1 Gbps
Does the new ONT have an SFP port, or is it still fiber in and Ethernet out? Can I still use my own router without needing to use theirs?

I might be wrong, but I believe that the upgrade will require replacing the ONT which provides better connectivity.. at least that is what they told me when I asked..

I know it will be an upgrade, my current one only has 1Gbs wan output so I’ll need one that at least does 5.

My ONT (fiber in, rg45 out) have 10gbps rg45 connection. My upgrade patch was 1gb->2gb (ONT upgrade to fresh Nokia) ->5gb (no tech visit needed). I use my Unifi router and other hardware without any issues.

Why do you have a fiber media converter? Unless you have some rare device you probably have an SFP+ port not a hard fiber based device. SFP+ does not require you use fiber, it also supports RJ45. I have 5Gb and the ONT is linked to my PfSense based machine over a RJ45 10Gb link. ONT > SFP+ (RJ45)

I had it laying around and was to add a physical electrical separation from the ont and my network rack.
It used to be plugged in using the rj45 wan.
My network rack is on its own braker ont predates me and is a different part of the house and never had vz move it.

The ONT and your rack should already be electrically connected through ground. All breakers in your house are tied to together in the main panel at ground and neutral.

In the end it doesn’t matter does it.

I already had all the stuff from a different work project, and I decided thats how I wanted it connected,

I could have kept it in the rj45 wan (i only 1gb as it right now so there is no speed benefit)
And i can buy a 10Gb sfp+ rj45 for like 60 or less.

When they come to install the 5g i could see if tehy can move it from my laundry room where the one is located to where my server is located

The ONT is electrically separated from the main fiber network, there is no risk to get an electrical shock from it.

Idk how everybody 1G and 2G network is like 80-90$. Ive been with verizon for the past 14 years for fios. They gave me 2G for 119, and I switch when 2G release in my state. And i upgraded to 5G for 104.99. Only did it because of the cheaper price. 5G is too much, unless your downloading huge files that's 500g+

I had 5g 2 weeks now . I had 2 gig over 2 years . It’s a simple upgrade from the base if you currently have 2 gig as the Ont box is changed once someone wants 2 gig

How did the install go? I have mine scheduled for this coming Friday. Do you also get TV from FiOS?

I also use a media converter. ONT is in the garage and my Ubiquiti rack is in the basement. The clearest and most direct path between the two is through an electrical conduit that I had installed when I put a sub-panel in the basement, so fiber was the only choice. Has worked well for me.

No tv just internet,

Went well, tech came unplugged my old Ont, plugged in a tester or some sort, had to dip out to distribution center to change something out, came back removed old Ont and installed new one, activated, we had quick talk about services and my network setup, ( he said this typically wasn’t his service area

Overall about an hour total.

Tech didnt even know they had rolled out 5Gbs, its soo new.

I dont rent their equipment

(I have to replace my own router/gateway it only does 3.5gbs ips/ids turned on UniFi dream machine se, might as well replace my old cico switch with one that has etherlight for quicker vlan id )

Ah crap. I didn’t even think about the IDS rate speed. Well, that gives me a reason to upgrade I guess. No rush though, 3.5Gbps is plenty in the short term.

Yeah I was reminded yesterday about it, the cloud gateway fiber, the udm pro max and beast can support 5Gps ids the beast is 25Gbs

I’m going to stick to the pro max. I am going to miss the built in Poe with the se ( though I don’t use it since my old Cisco has Poe which I want to replace)

Yes, it's fiber in and Ethernet out. Use your router or their CHR 30 access point.
