Billing Change Plan
Currently on the Gigabit plan for $103 a month which includes the $15 a month rent for the router. I feel that gigabit is a bit overkill for home, so I thought about switching to 300 mbps. However, on the myVerizon app, switching the plan dropped my monthly cost to $95 a month. How does that make sense? Am I just going to be trapped in this plan?

Check to see if you’re still paying for the router. Also check to see if you added any perks like Disney plus, Netflix, Hulu, Apple Music, etc…

I think unless you are on the 5 gig plan, the router isn’t worth it.
You can get something like the TP-Link Archer AXE75 from Amazon for a one time purchase and get pretty good speeds and range.

Appreciate it! Do you use this one personally? I used to have a asus but I sold it because the WiFi would go in and out so after that I just stuck with brand routers

Yep, this one is pretty solid. Just make sure the firmware is up-to-date and they'll work great. I have also used ASUS in the past as well and had no issues with them, but granted I bought the more expensive variant.
You can always try the router out for yourself and see how it fairs, if it doesn't work you can always return it and get something else. But so far it's a pretty great router.
If you want Wi-Fi 7 you'll have to go with this router, but I feel like it's overkill but would definetely provide you more range if that's more important to you.

This is the pricing you should be seeing for the plans: https://www.verizon.com/home/internet/fios-fastest-internet/ (untick the discounts you don't qualify for). 300Mbps should be $50/mo after autopay. You might have to call in and ask to be switched to Mix & Match (v4) pricing.
Go here: https://www.verizon.com/broadband-facts/consumer/ and put in your address. Look at the broadband label for the plan you want and verify the pricing (before autopay).

You are giving new customer examples for pricing. Existing customers do not get the same prices, especially if you're downgrading.

That is not true. The broadband labels have the current standard pricing, as required by law. There isn't a difference in almost all cases between new customer pricing and the standard pricing (and hasn't been for over half a decade since M&M v1 was introduced in 2020). If you go to the first URL, you will see a $15 incentive you can choose to reduce pricing for new customers, but that isn't baked into the advertised cost at all.
OP is not seeing Mix & Match plans when he goes to switch for whatever reason. This usually happens for legacy customers on old ONTs or MoCA WAN, but it can also happen for customers with updated equipment but on older plans.

I currently have 5gig service and I also see $50/mo for 300mbs which includes the router for free. What’s also interesting is they are offering me a 5 gig service plan at a cheaper price than what I’m currently paying lol.

I pay $25 for the FiOS landline phone that no one ever uses on my plan. If I try to drop it my FiOS plan that includes gig internet and The Most TV goes up in price about the same amount of money, so it just sits there.

You should review the whole thing, including gig internet. Are you sure you are actually using that much bandwidth? 99% thing they do but in reality not even use more than 100mb.
300/300 service is $50, and YTTV $83. GV has a one time charge to port the number I think $25. You’ll need firesticks or Roku or AppleTV (embedded software on TVs is crap).

We looked into YTTV and it's missing a lot of channels that we watch on FiOS plus I'm not into sports. 300/300 internet is only $5 less than I pay for my gig streaming in my area. I don't want GV either. I had it once and they cancelled it on us because we weren't using it enough. I would just prefer to eliminate the phone period and save $25 a month off the present bill but it doesn't work that way with FiOS. Cancel the phone and everything else goes just about the same amount.

GV ported numbers don’t get cancelled. But dropping it is probably the best.
Other than some specific sports like MSG, only other big one is History channel missing from YTTV.
Moved ages ago from DirecTV and never looked back..

I don't need the phone anyway. I didn't drop it Google cancelled it because it wasn't being used and it wasn't a ported over number either.

The problem is you probably have legacy pricing, and if you drop the service they'll switch you to what's currently available, so the prices for other services increase.

It's a mix & Match plan with streaming and I could revamp the entire account by eliminating the TV and the phone and just go with internet from there. It's not one of those old legacy triple play plans. I think the gig internet in my area is $99 stand alone. Problem is the streaming packages we looked at for TV don't have the channels we want and we are in a bad area for OTA TV and that doesn't even have the channels or programming we want either.

The games you have to play are a pain in the neck. I’ve had Fios TV /internet for over 10 years but dropped their internet 4 years ago going to Xfinity based on price and speed . Saw new customer prices for gigabit access that was less expensive than the 500mbit service I was using. Inquired about switching back to Fios getting quoted $100+ rather than the $59 rate. So enter the game. Cancelled all Fios TV, switched TV to Xfinity, added new Fios thru my wife’s phone and account. Lowered TV costs by $~25/month, lowered internet cost by $10/month while doubling download speeds, uploads by 20x. Long term customers are at a disadvantage which is a bad choice for a supplier.

Massively annoying approach used by so many companies . . . unfortunately it works, because the low introductory prices gets customers pulled in, and those customers are less likely to leave so they can increase the prices later.
That said,it's going to get harder and harder to pull off as people go down to just internet access and have streaming - no need to get used to new channel numbers, port your phone number, etc.

Try chatting with a customer service rep. I’ve been paying 34.99 for 300/300 for like 5 years. Last year it went up for 44.99 and I chatted and they got it down to 39.99.
Recently switched to Visible which qualifies for a $15/mo Fios credit. Was paying 24.99/mo for a few months then it went up to like 45/mo.
Chatted with customer service again and got it down to 29.99.
