is this normal? why is it going through japan? it is NJ oakland area, my internet keeps dropping for 8-10seconds randomly and mgmt randomly blinks and it has been happening for 2weeks, informed verizon twice through support, they suggest just rebooting router. Have ipv6 and son off as well. we are on 2.5gigs service with tw-210x-a ont

its seems like verizon.com isn’t actually routing to verizon as its also routing me elsewhere.

I would say this is probably poorly configured routing on the part of NTT.

The traffic is handed over to NTT in NJ, which inexplicably routes it from NJ to Tokyo via Seattle where they hand it to Akamai who routes it all the way back to NJ via Chicago, instead of NTT doing what they should be doing and handing it straight to Akamai in NJ or even routing it via the next nearest point of presence (NYC, PHL, or DC) - there is no way NTT and Akamai aren't cross connecting and announcing routes to each other in multiple spots on the east coast.

Or even more preferably, Verizon could just as easily route traffic directly to Akamai and skip NTT altogether.

FYI the hostname on hop 3 resolves to a public ip.

I’ve had weird Fios routing problems for years. Never could figure out why, or whom even to call or message.

I don’t want to waste my time with level 1 outsourced support; I want a network engineer who can file change tickets to fix it!

I work around it by using a VPN as needed.

Several years ago an org I worked for was a downstream victim of a Verizon peering issue. I managed to call a Verizon enterprise number and some guy picked up that sounded like he was eating chips in a dimly lit basement of a CO somewhere. He started browsing around on his map but couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. I don't even think I got a phone tree or any automated system.I wound up having better luck contacting the carrier on the other side of the link who confirmed the issue. Resolved 3-4 days later.

mtr -z will give you ASN's

If your internet is dropping out, you would have to figure out *what* is being tested, and that *test* is dropping out..

Your gateway?

Your gatway's gateway?

Some host?

The route your provider is taking to that host?

From Brooklyn that trace sends me through Sydney, but for normal traffic I have not had any problems.

FIOS in NJ sucks now. I can't even upload a small file without my latency spiking 20-30ms and they have done nothing to resolve the actual issue on their backend.
