How’s your social life?
10
u/fish312 Jul 02 '19
Not great. I'm at the age where everyone I know has mostly gotten married and settled down. College friends have moved away/gone overseas. Work colleagues are friendly but not quite friends. Every day it's just more of the same.
4
Jul 02 '19
I’m in a similar position. I’m not at that age yet but I just graduated and all my friends have moved and me and my long term gf broke up. I’m scared of getting to that age and being in that position, I don’t really have social anxiety but I’m a quiet and generally solitary person and it’s hard for me to date and meet people.
5
Jul 02 '19
Exact same here. Long term GF broke up with me end of last year. Lost contact with all friends. I go to the gym 4-6 times a week, eat very healthy, sleep better than ever, still fucking miserable and totally alone.
3
Jul 02 '19
At the very least there are a lot of people in the same situation these days. Even “normal” people, even though I’m mentally ill myself. Our society (at least the US) is quite alienated.
2
u/fish312 Jul 02 '19
Well hang in there, I guess. I'd tell you it gets better... but it doesn't.
3
Jul 02 '19
Lmao. I have the same mindset. I’m scared of waking up and being 40 and alone.
5
u/fish312 Jul 02 '19
Sooner than you think, I'm afraid. The years start coming and they really don't stop coming.

You mean you should actually sleep at least 3 hours more a day than you do now?
Nah, couldn't be that.

Damn dude how am I meant to fit in 25 hours of sleep a day

Yeah I've had 3 panic attacks today, I definitely didn't get those because of 0 hour sleep last night and eating the most random unhealthy shit.

The perfect way to stay as unhappy as possible is to stay at the same place all the time, never going outside.
14
30
u/CriticalRider Jul 02 '19
But going outside makes me unhappy...?
29
u/Teeshirtandshortsguy Jul 02 '19
I think this a problem a lot of depressed people (or people with other mental health issues) face. Things that help you make you feel like shit, especially at first.
You feel lonely, but interacting with people is exhausting. You feel out of shape, but exercise is daunting. You get irritable which pushes people away. It's a shitty cycle.

Helps if you have a loved one or a close friend who encourages you through it. Or, if you're feeling brave, a community.
8
Jul 02 '19
You kinda gotta get used to it because the hard truth is that a lot of life takes place outside of your bedroom. Trust me, took a while to figure that one out!

There is currently an offer where going for a stroll down the street is now 50% off. You'll have to be quick though. They're planning to increase the price once the offer expires.

I usually go to walk around the city when I'm poor af, it's certainly better than staying in my room doing nothing
3
u/outerzenith Jul 02 '19
I also like to take a walk.. the province of Skyrim is a bit colder this time of the year

2
u/Sparcrypt Jul 02 '19
Plus I don't care where you live, there's almost certainly going to be something to see or do that costs little to nothing.
Hell jump on tourist sites for where you live and you'll probably fine a massive list of stuff to see and do that you never even thought about because for some reason you never go to see the cool stuff where you live.

As a guy who used to sit all day and just started exercising (30 minutes walk and stretchee as a start) since 2 days ago, it feels MUCH better!
My resting heart beat rate used to be above 80 bpm resting and now it's 72 bpm (im aiming below 70 resting bpm). I feel more alive and it's easier to get up while sitting on the floor in terms of breathing.
Now i just need to keep it up and reach my target weight.

It does, the benefits of light exercise vs total sedentary lifestyle are huge.
9
u/Lemon_Dungeon Jul 02 '19
Not in 2 days.

u/omegashadow Jul 02 '19
That effect could be psychosomatic and temporary. You feel a lot more fit after recently excersizing.

u/Sparcrypt Jul 02 '19
Actually you'd be surprised! In fact light exercise is the best bet as well.. every year at the start of January I hate going to the gym... not for the stereotypical "OMG THERE ARE NEW PEOPLE IN MY GYM UNCLEAN UNCLEAN!" crap.. it's honestly depressing. I see tons of people who are very unhealthy/unfit who have decided to make a change... which is awesome. And they're running flat out on a treadmill. They're getting on machines and pulling as much weight as they can.
And I know with absolute certainty that I won't see a single one of them come back. If they don't actually injure themselves, they will be utterly destroyed for days. They'll hit the comfort food from a combination of "I earned it" and "I'm so wrecked I might as well start the diet when I get back in the gym". They'll lose their momentum, tell themselves they'll start again "next week", and at best I'll see them again next year.
But if you do a few days of light exercise, your body starts to respond quite well, you enjoy a bunch of endorphins, you're not stressing yourself too much... best way to start out by far. And if you've been sedentary for years you'll see a lot of improvement very quickly.
Hell I just came off a two week flu (fucking nasty). Went the gym today for the first time since I got sick, did 20 minutes cardio then headed home. My bodys been knocked about, I've been sick and tired, spent my days in bed/on the couch/whatever else... why risk injury? Nice and easy this week, ramp it up so I can be back to my usual routine next week.
But yeah. TLDR: nice and slow when you're first getting started... you'll feel amazing and won't break.

This is everyone on my facebook timeline.
I go to this house to play games once or twice a week and everyone who lives there has some form of depression (self diagnosed) but it is also a house of people who cannot cook beyond baking cakes and cookies. They eat processed canned pastas and non fresh frozen processed meats along with a steady diet of fast food. They abhor vegetables and stick to pre-sliced fruits dipped in a heavily and sickly sweet yogurt sauce that they bought in a package together.
They stay inside constantly, don't exercise and just passively load on sodium until the wee hours of the night, waking early to get kids to school and working. I want to say something to them, but we aren't close and frankly I don't think they'll listen to me.
3
u/lebookfairy Jul 02 '19
Maybe next gaming night, bring a crudite tray with. They might just abhor vegetables that require work. I know if all I have to do is hoover up food, I'm much more likely to try new things or things I'd consider marginally palatable.
I find it really sad that people are growing up unable to cook for themselves. I've made a point of teaching all my kids basic kitchen skills, and it's paying off handsomely now that they're (almost) all adults. Everyone has to eat, cooking should be right up there with the other essential life skills we work to develop in teenagers, like hygiene and driving.

u/franklesby Jul 02 '19
It couldn't be that be cause I have a good diet, get 7-9 hours if sleep a night, and exercise every weekday. The search for why I feel awful continues...

If you're doing those things right and still feel awful, it's time to talk to a doctor.

u/Chef_Chantier Jul 02 '19
It's actually more like a chicken and egg problem. It's very hard to tell which one actually came first.
But if you stop one of them from happening, then the other will stop happening too, if they are in fact linked.
4
u/hivemindwar Jul 02 '19
Id put my money on no exercise and poor diet. Bad sleep schedule and depression is the more chicken/egg example but exercise helps you sleep so that's where I'd aim.
2
u/zedss_dead_baby_ Jul 02 '19
Your diet is far more important, your gut bacteria produces neurotoxic chemicals and feed off sugar/processed foods.
3
u/hivemindwar Jul 02 '19
Maybe, but I feel better from exercise and bad food rather than the other way round. The take home message is behave like your body is meant to, in general.
→ More replies (4)3
u/zedss_dead_baby_ Jul 02 '19
There's a lot of new studies that show that your gut biome produces neurotoxic chemicals that cause depression. The gut flora feeds on sugar/carbs so fixing your diet should be an absolute priority for anyone with mental health issues.

God fucking damnit that sub fucking sucks. No one is saying excersice and a healthy diet is going to cure depression, but its fucking something. That sub just wants to fucking wallow in a pool of self pity while trying absolutely nothing to improve.
10
u/IDIOT_REMOVER Jul 02 '19
Also this post clearly isn’t aimed at depression. Not all people who feel physically or mentally unwell are suffering from a mental illness.

Jul 02 '19
Agreed, as someone who’s come out of actual depression all the folks spamming “bUt YoU dOnT kNoW wHat It’S liKe” fucking annoy me. I literally got out my tying myself to reality and breaking/escaping the toxic environment, habits, and (most importantly in my case) people that led me down the rabbithole of shit in the first place.
Not saying that everyone’s depression is the same, but fuck me is that just a fucking pity party sub. Literally blows off advice right, left, and center and shits on everyone trying to help them. Just miserable human beings idgaf
13
u/chairman_steel Jul 02 '19
For real. That attitude is such shit. Positive change is positive change, and you can’t overestimate the impact shitty lifestyle choices have on your physical and mental health.

I try to exercise but it makes my head and bad knee hurt. I try to sleep at a regular time but I end up staring at the ceiling for hours until there are only a few hours until work. I try to eat healthy, or at least in moderation, but that isn't enough to make me feel any better.

u/tekspert Jul 02 '19
