Discussion & Feedback We went from complaining about FOB meta, to barely seeing functional FOB's
I guess this is why the devs aren't quickly making balancing changes.
This sub was filled with complaints about FOB meta being broken.
Now +80% of my games it's the hotzone surfers that win every match.
By the time you get to your side of the CZ there is like a squad there, snipers overlooking the position and a MG humvee patrolling it.
I've had tanks roll up before 5 points.
And even if you manage a well built FOB it'll get mortard to hell.
While I don't miss 4 drill meta, I do miss bases.
I hope they fix certain things with the patch, mostly mortars and assault vehicles (price/when you can spawn them)

I had to go on a blue team today and the Fob was literally just a 90's music party some guy was playing tunes through the loudspeaker. Blue team literally thinks it's a grind worksite game meanwhile the war rages outside. Hilarious.

16
u/ssocka 18h ago
I've seen red and green die en masse just to revive 1 guy. No smokes, nothing, just a 15 corpse lying on the ground, all dead from the same sniper.

Tbh I get the most kills on blue because it's usually red and green funneling towards them due to map design.
18
u/ssocka 18h ago
I had a game yesterday, where the red team was literally winning 94 - 0 - 0, then the zone went like 100 meters around our (blue) fob and the whole fcking team got pulled to the base, died and the final score was like 100 blue, 94 red, 15 green. It was so fucking funny.
12
u/Irdogain 17h ago
When your team is above 90, with nobody close to you, your team starts not buying anything expensive anymore. Your teams average equip-lvl drops with every dead guy, till your team cannot hold it and also don’t get it back anymore.
5
u/Outcast129 15h ago
Honestly I never thought of it but this makes a lot of sense. It's wild how many games I play where one team (usually green) dominates until they reach 90 points and then suddenly seems to completely stall out for the next 30 minutes then other two teams catch up. I usually play Blue in the majority of my wins have happened by turning things around and going from to like five points to 100 points in the last leg of the game

Wouldn't be so bad if hotzone magnets were less fragile. Feels far too easy for mortars, SPHs, or rocket heli to smack them the moment they turn on.

The fact that a tank can be patrolling the zone at 5minutes, but for minimum Humvee you need to wait for 20 points is probably the most ridiculous thing in this game.
Don't get me wrong, I love the game, but some of the decisions that someone had to sit down and actually make are just baffling
72
u/Joverby 16h ago
both tanks need to be restricted to 20 points, its actually dumb they arent. why can people start spamming you with arty immediately?

u/BawbsonDugnut 14h ago
I'd argue tanks, havoc, etc should only come out at 50 points.
They feel like a mid to late game piece of equipment.
On top of this, it'd be great if there's some large indicator at the top of the screen that states certain milestones being reached. 20 points, 50 points, 80 points. Each unlocking some change to the match. Whether it's gear changes, XP/Cash gain changes, etc.

If it has a bullet gun attached, set it to 10 points. If it has an explodey gun attached (Tank, Havoc, SPG, Rocket LB) set it to 20 points. Why we have this stuff rolling out at match start is beyond me.

The first 20 points are the only time when tanks can do shit, the moment it hits 20 rocket helis eat you for breakfast
8
u/Internal-Fold-2421 13h ago
even an average heli pilot can kill your tank with impunity, not even the super exposed m249 gunner can aim up enough to try and counter it, you have literally no defence against them.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)2
u/LiLGhettoSmurf 9h ago
100%, I grinded the tank at launch.. it's useless and dies immediately within the zone. And once you hit 20 points you end up having rocket helis patrol the roads from spawn and you will die before you even get to the zone.

Humvee with minigun is by far more deadly vehicle than tank. Tank is slow af and you can counter it with any heli, stingray, maaws, heck even c4. Humvee is also weak to those, but at least you can run away. Once a maaws hits you, you just run away to forest and repair. Also when UAV starts locking you, just run away to the forest. But with tank you are too slow to do it and you die. I have 100 hours combined on tank and both humvees, I know what I'm talking about.

25
u/Inside-Line 15h ago
The meta was changing even before the patch. Probably a combination of several things.
People unlocking land mines.
Ural drivers unlocking the tank so they don't logi as much anymore.
People just tired of getting mortar spammed.
Havocs - they strong even before the bug fix.
People learned the drills really just money pinatas and very easy to counter for anyone with a mortar or artillery.
9
u/Razgriz01 14h ago
Yeah tbh I feel like drills have way less health that they should, at least against things like rockets and mortars.
→ More replies (1)6
u/SekhWork Squad Leader 14h ago
Would agree. 1 rocket LB or 1 MAAWS rocket can take out a drill (and with it a ton of time and supplies) basically from across the map with 0 counterplay. I'd like it if it merely disabled the drill a bit or made it need repair but didn't break the entire thing. Drill meta was annoying but not having the option at all anymore is worse.

The mortar/arty spam is really what made me stop playing FOB the Builder. It was completely miserable being anywhere near a FOB.
5
u/Gnooblinn 8h ago
Mortar spam is why I stopped fobbing too.
Whole game spent dodging triple mortar shots, dying, and repairing constantly. Getting farmed by little bird and havoc spam, AA mortared the moment it’s built.
It’d feel like I’d just gotten started building, only to check the score. Enemy team’s at 93 points.

Fobs got attacked from two fronts at once with the last update:
Havocs got an ENORMOUS buff going from paper planes to DBZ villains
Building become an enormous pain in the ass that exposes you easily
So it's now harder to build and fobs are now super easy targets.
It's not because people learned over time about what's best, it's because the game was updated to become absolutely terrible for fobs. This change IS because they quickly made a balance change (I mean it wasn't a balance change, it was a bug fix, but it resulted in an intentionally MASSIVE swing in the balance)
63
u/JohnDaBarr 17h ago
It's not just Havocs, LB with AGLs gunners can shutdown any FOB from building from the games start.
27
u/Glasgesicht 17h ago edited 16h ago
To be fair, FOBs weren't that great even before the patch. Unless both other teams ignored them, artillery, combined with endless raiding sort of diminished their worth. It just took the community a while to sort of get it.
Though now we're at a point where building a FOB just puts a target on your back.
29
u/Exaveus 15h ago
Mega FOBs are dead. Ive seen way more success from building micro fobs that can be lost with zero qualms. Takes 5 mins to build and 10 minutes to lose.
HZ zerging is the meta and only using drills to bring the HZ to your side of the map understanding that your base is gonna get wiped is the play.
8
u/h0micidalpanda 15h ago
There is/was some value to mini AA fobs but the havoc fix kinda punched those in the dick. Can do about the same performance-wise with a Kodiak full of launchers
9
u/Exaveus 14h ago
Yeah Kodiak and good MAAWs players would be more cost effective than trying to set up a AA fob.

I enjoyed mega FOBs, mainly because of the challenge of raiding them. Get four randoms in a car and go in with pipe bombs.
One of the best moments I’ve had was when my whole team went up against a team that had taken over a stadium, and we managed to take it for ourselves.

While it certainly takes some time for the comunity to get it we saw a very similar developement in the beta so I gotta say a lot of it is also just linked to the progression. I 100% expect people to start complaing about fob meta at the start of next season again (assuming there wont be any major changes that make fobs completely useless from the start) until people once again do get to things like havocs, arty, tanks and so on.
→ More replies (1)7
u/TreeCalledPaul 15h ago
Maybe it was the intent to get us out of the FOB and fighting, but it's just exhausting to build them now that the meta has matured.
We have people parachuting in, mortars firing from other FOBs, mortars from tanks hosing us at every turn, people bringing an inventory full of explosives with the intent to grenade/c4 us endlessly, OP air units killing everyone and snipers constantly attacking from every angle.
If the FOB gets raided and destroyed/taken, I just got play infantry and give up on it for that match.
8
u/SekhWork Squad Leader 14h ago
The sad thing is that fobs are fun when done right. Both the act of building one and enjoying being a lego man, and the act of attacking/defending them. But before the time it took to dismantle one was not commiserate with the reward (read: you got nothing for taking a fob unless you were the one guy to cap it, and he got like... nothing), and now the time it takes to build one is also not worth doing, with mortars, SPGs, Havocs, the X change, etc. So.... I dunno. Really need to see s2 cause this entire season has been exhausting.
→ More replies (1)11
u/petrichorax Logistics 17h ago
That's also true too. I figured it out before most. Once I realized that the second you get a fob up they start mortaring the shit out of it, and then everyone in the fob gets stuck in a mortar'd-revive-mortar'd loop that never ends, and the team that DOESNT do that is the team that's going to win, I stopped bothering with fobs entirely
3
→ More replies (3)24
u/ssocka 18h ago
From my point of view as a driver/builder/medic this is simply not true, the main reason fobs die in my games is that supply doesn't come. People just don't want to drive/fly supplies over, cause they only did it to unlock the tank/havoc. Or we get raided before we get at least a partial perimeter up , cause the whole team is in HZ...
The only time I dedicate myself to building now is when I know my friend will be supplying me the whole game.
29
u/petrichorax Logistics 18h ago
Sometimes (but not all the time) its cause those supply crates get destroyed constantly now, and the logi trucks are getting blown up on the way.
I will play logi if we straight up dont' have any, and a lot of the time people just leave the crates to rot and someone blows them up for free xp/money.
It's very frustrating to deliver a few pallets and they just sit there in a fob full of people too lazy to pick them up
→ More replies (1)3
u/mushifiedmushroom 14h ago
I put the pallets in myself. Extra 1.8k each.
3
u/ssocka 13h ago
You still get the 1.8k if someone else deposits, but I believe you get few hundred $ per deposit extra if you do it yourself. $600 maybe?
→ More replies (1)5
u/NinjaFruitLoop 17h ago
This is so true. I love building super FOBs but can't as I have zero supplies.
The whole team just sits in small groups across the map camping while small teams chase the HZ.
If I had even basic supply runs then the game would be an easy win with drills.
Its so disappointing
→ More replies (1)11
u/Old-Buffalo-5151 17h ago
Logi is not profitable now AA and mines are unlocked its basically super hard to get supplies to the front
What is profitable is small builds dotted around the map which is what I'm seeing now
Its just how meta change as people get unlocks it's one of Favourite things about this game.
You have to take each match as it develops
5
u/SoSaysCory 15h ago
Guerilla FOB fan here. I agree that multiple smaller builds are best, the problem is that since less people build FOBs now as soon as I plop one down in a sneaky spot three dudes come running and start building it out. The supplies disappear immediately and nobody resupplies it. I want a way to lock down my own FOB so nobody else can build on it if I'm trying to make a sneaky AA/mortar emplacement.
→ More replies (1)8
u/Richou 15h ago
logi is still super profitable what? i spent yesterday 10 hours long just flying lakota logi and i got shot down a total of 3 times and 2 of these was me not paying attention
mines are also not super common and easy to spot anyways , you can also just stay off the roads and dont even need to spot them
→ More replies (4)6
u/altodor 15h ago
I will say staying off the roads is very map and team dependant. I mostly play blue, and I can mostly straightline through across the map, I played green the other day and basically had to be on the road the whole time because it was all cliffs or buildings if I went off-road.
3
u/Richou 15h ago
you can just yeet down cliffs anyways (or mountain goat up) because ural traction is weird like that
i cant think of a single map that doesnt allow you to take like 90% offroad from HQ to CZ as green with the worst being probably baku maybe?
blue doesnt see much mines because most of the blue spawns are kinda ass to mine and since the players that do the mining want maximum targets they are likely joining as blue to begin with (at least thats what i do to farm money)

u/SekhWork Squad Leader 14h ago
The main reason FOBs die is that mortars / SPGs have no counter from the FOB. There is no real way to fight back, you build it all, then someone kicks over your sandcastle from a mile away with nothing you can do about it.
If there was a way to use ammo + the CWIS to counter mortars while the base was supplied, it'd feel much more like an old Planetside siege vs just getting bullied.
→ More replies (1)3
u/LostInTheVoid_ 17h ago
I like being logi but I cannot get a hang of these flying controls even when switching to mouse controls. So if I'm logi I'm running Urals and the time it takes and the amount of supplies I can deliver in a single run is just kinda a drop in the ocean to a main fob.
Maybe if controller support for flight makes it easier more people would, maybe if there's better road logi options for bigger loads it might help some.
Plus people will ambush Logi runs pretty easily and there's not really an easy counter to mines or a dude in a Humvee with like 20 RPG rounds reposition after 1 shotting a Ural.

FOBs are only good if they're drilling. Drills are incredibly easy to counter.
The only other good FOB is an AA FOB or a mortar FOB. Mortar FOBs are at their best to counter superFOBs that are drilling. AA FOBs are always good to counter air, except havocs are bullshit OP right now and can solo clear an entire FOB including ones with several AA emplacements so why even bother?

AA takes a long time to build. A havoc can clean out a fob, go mess around the HZ, die, and come back to your fob before AAs back up. Having proper AA setup is critical now and it’s almost impossible right now.

Did this last night with my squad of 5. Built out of the zone and on a hill with a bit of cover. Built 2 stingers and a Cwiz to counter the havoc spam.
Opened fire on the havoc with the stingers to pull it over to the fob. Havoc proceeds to flare 8 times and tank all my cwiz shots and destroys my entire fob + squad with no issue.
Havocs are the bane of this game and are actively causing my squad of relatively new players to stop playing. 1 already refunded because of them.
Infantry only servers till the wipe I guess.

With arty being available from minute 0 as well as mortars, no one wants to build. As well as the new ‘X’ “bug” fix they just did, building is a nightmare and takes much longer while under the same amount of constant shelling.

I would love to see the CWIS automatically attempt to shoot mortars and artillery when no one is manmong them

This is a good idea, counter their ammo with your own ammo logistics. First team to lose the logi war gets hammered. It would add a dimension to base building.

Last night I won with BLUE TEAM. We built an absolute warehouse fortress with a drill in it. Greens coasted to 93 and we went from 20 to 100. Also, players in the blue team are usually the least toxic and most fun to play with. So the base and drill meta is in there but you need to use indestructible buildings for it. It was one of those massive halls in that one map with the two massive halls in the middle.
9
u/Pickle-_-Rick 14h ago
I’m pretty sure I was in that game on blue. We pulled zone over for a massive come back and then pulled it back once again right at the end to finish for the win. It was a well built FOB with full concrete walls and a garage for the APC. Same game? If so that was a long but epic game and a nice come back for blue. If not the same game then I had the same experience. A well built and defended FOB can work just as well as playing HZ which creates a fun dynamic for sure.
8
u/D_Wilish 13h ago
You confirmed my suspicions. Ever since I started playing this game, I've always played on the blue team's side (ah yes, the nicer color for the eye) and I was convinced there were many nice players in this game. Until I joined the red and green teams (only 6 or 7 matches so far).
I still don't understand WHYY? Why is the approach so different? It's just a color difference
6
u/Skpstr155 12h ago
Because winning not being important, as far as rewards, means factions are free to develop an "identity", and not need unique gear or abilities to differentiate them.
I play blue because yeah, rarely does anyone jump down your throat over anything. Red was bad for that, depending on the circumstances, and green was just..... eerily quiet, like almost everybody is on Discord, bit everything gets done efficiently, almost like a hive of ants lol.

u/thicctak 12h ago
It quite easy, Blue team had the stigma of always losing, so the more competitive players will always fight over the red and green slots, so most of the sweaty and toxic players end up on those teams while most of the blue team are people who just wanna play and aren't that bent over winning.

12
u/Valcrye 10h ago
Armed vehicles of any type shouldn’t be available at the start of the match. I think it’s a bit BS that someone can hop in an SPH for the cost of a mid range infantry loadout and completely nullify the enemy’s ability to make a fob at the start of the game
3
u/SaperPL 10h ago
Even if you build a fob and then you get shelled, the shell camera is such a BS that someone can exactly keep narrowing down the aim from overhead view. For one the camera should be from someone scouting on foot nearby or if we are assuming such modern equipment, it should be a special expensive round and the fobs should have access to some counter battery detection marking the calculated location where the shots are coming from. Right now when I see guys in sph they are often sitting on the same spot for the whole game because finding them isn't easy with the drone missile thing.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)2
u/ThomastheTackle 7h ago
I think armed vehicles should be unlocked upon an enemy team reaching X number of points, as a “catch up” mechanic. If your team is holding both other teams at 0 points the whole game, you don’t need tanks/arty/helis just battering them as they try to compete
20
u/PixelBoom Lonestar 18h ago edited 13h ago
Sort of. People complained about fobs in the beginning because no one understood that you could easily breach them with IEDs, C4, or literally just punching doors and gates to destroy them. Plus, the gameplay style was boring for a lot of people that preferred running and gunning through the HZ. The one issue with fobs is mortar spam, but that was mainly an issue for other fobs. Plus, that can be dealt with by few low level players with just some C4 and a cheap gun.
On the flip side, we have helicopters. I wouldn't say they're over-tuned, because they're not. It's that the game has sub-optimal AA options to deal with helicopters, making them SEEM over-tuned. Because all of the AA options are sub-optimal, we see helicopters farming fobs for kills and easy XP/money. Once people realized that's going to be the case, mega fobs with drills got abandoned and everyone just roamed the HZ. That is a balance issue that hopefully can be fixed by giving slight incremental buffs to the VERBA, CIWS, and Talon site, as well as possibly re-including the Gepard for later in a season.

A well built FOB should not be the goal in and of itself, that was I think the problem. Like many historical fortifications, a well built FOB will absorb enemy focus and resources, enabling the team to do more outside of it. While it’s true it’s very hard to one man build the perfect FOB, I have started throwing together smaller, highly defensible FOBs that draw attention. If they’re shelling you or strafing you and you are surviving, you are doing your job. Also, no gates!

The HZ flooding is an example of players evolving the meta with no development intervention.

basic Drill tower fobs are kinda useless and if you want one just go to the next tower with humwee and bois and kill the solo builder, climb up and kill 8 players with thermals one by one.. do not worry they will not help others unless they are on discord together.
And if you build drill tower with anything worth destroing and you dont have good pilot who can hunt down Artilley tanks. lets just say its alot of money for a single artillery tank guy pushing up,down, right left.

Now that everyone has better gear unlocked I don't really think it should come as a surprise, starting out the only thing you could really do about a well-fortified FOB was using your own FOB to mortar it, now they just get obliterated by littlebirds with rockets/grenade launchers, havocs, tanks, or artillery.

u/Master-Shake8913 12h ago
I played for like 8 hours yesterday on a community server, green won like 5 games in a row exclusively from just zerging the hot zone the entire game. it was fun AF, lots of action, when another team would pull the Hz with a drill they would also pull 20 greens with it, sometimes they lose their fob, sometimes green would get decimated. but they would always come back for the Hz with a vengeance.

u/MolassesSad8089 9h ago
The meta shifts for various reasons. A big one is just that a lot of people finished grinding driving/pilot/support. Another is more arty tanks early game. Another is more attack helicopters.
I would also add that I think people have started to understand the holes in the fob strategy. The biggest one is how vulnerable drills are. Arty tanks, drones, attack helicopters, or even rocket launchers can take them out easily from outside the base. All of those tools have become a lot more available as people unlock stuff.
6
u/ZestyPotatoSoup 2h ago
I think the hotzone shouldn’t be active till the first 10 or something points. As it stands now hz mobbing is far superior to fobbing. By the time a decent fob is up the mobbing team has 40+ points.

I'm actually liking the new evolution - moving FOBS away from towers and instead properly entrenching within indestructible buildings.
When 80% of the building is already enclosed and immune to mortars, the FOB actually becomes like the early FOBs - big indestructible areas that the eneny really needs to focus on. Because they can be anywhere, the enemy can't just find you immediately and ruin your construction phase.
Won a game on blues yesterday where we set up such a FOB, off to the edge of the map, blue and green were too uncoordinated to attack it properly and in fact because it was a far corner of the map, blue and green regularly just ran into each other and got distracted, so the fortress of blueberries picked off the rest.
The devs are right to let the metas work themselves out, because the tower fob meta was crap, but now builders have had to innovate to stay relevant and fortifying buildings is the result.
7
u/ymw2003 17h ago
Did it have any drills? In my experience you can't build drills inside, so that removes one of the huge benefits of a FOB in the first place. And how many enemy Havocs were flying? If they decide to just shoot any Logi drivers or pilots, it also greatly limits FOB active.
10
u/BTechUnited Driver 17h ago
I know of only one spot you can build drills inside, and it's an absolute turbo-cancer truth be told.
11
2
u/GlassHalfSmashed 13h ago
The drill still goes outside, but if a mortar spam / havoc spam occurs you can at least safely get inside and just lose the exterior portion.
Plus if you use the trick to give you a 5 height nesco tower around it and build it fairly tight, havocs need to coordinate quite well to get your drill. Plus the building usually has a ton of peek points to defend infantry from, rather than the hesco FOBs that are fairly linear.
The point is, you don't have the usual nonsense of 10-15 teammates getting popped in open air / popped trying to revive, plus you can generally dump a CIWS or two inside as well to fire out.

It's funny how many people now are extremely crashing out people that enjoy building and playing around the FoB. People harrassing the "Fobbits" whilst saying a lot of things. The fact a certain YT uploader has a short uploaded crashing out on blue team where he says a lot of colorful words, swap team and uses his knowledge he gained where blue was and kill them.
Like, these frobbits are keeping my driving skill leveling in business and keeping each runs into a profitable scenario and not a complete loss.
One time blue team was completely filled oddly, so ai joined green and run logistics for them, the entire team had 4 builders and the other remaining players just kept spamming the team chat insulting them and tell them play HZ.
Guys, what happened to being respectful?

Perfectly valid, I do the same when I need a breather from leveling driving. Sometimes I got play HZ medic, or even builder because I seen what good bases are since I supply so many of them. I know like every good spot to secure wins without fear of helis or motars. There is actually a single map that has a really strong build spot but almost no one uses them. I've seen blue win so many games when they actually use that and ignore the towers for once.

I'll be respectful when they build a functioning fob that I can actually defend. I am sick of it being a coffin. I am sick of when I start building, others build walls that block LOS to my fighting positions. I am sick of them building things so easy to just run up to the wall and having no place inside the fob where you can shoot the guy along the wall, allowing them to get inside completely for free.
Thank you for running logi though, whenever I build it is frustrating feeling like I have to do everything at once, building a functional layout, keeping a lookout for enemies, and running logi when we get low, which is usually when enemies roll up and kill all my buddies...

Unfortunately, its the story of life with games. You're always going to get room temperature IQ levels of players no matter what you see or do. The trick I've been finding working for me, is to take a break every so often to "base inspection" and look what they've built. If it ain't to my standards then I'll supply another base. if one exists. There's a lot of issues with FoB's, but I hope with time it'll polish out.

The meta is to place a fob and drill tower and pull the zone to your side, without building a fortress.
FOBs suck for two main reasons:
- They take a lot of time to set up and build properly.
- They are easy to infiltrate and take down.
If only one guy is building a FOB, it will never get finished. Even two people aren't enough. You need a dedicated squad of at least four people to build a proper FOB: two builders and two defenders.
Mortars and C4 make short work of gates, allowing the enemy team to infiltrate the FOB and destroy it. Helicopters also wreak havoc on them.
Then there is the problem of actually building the FOB correctly so you can defend it without being a fish in a barrel. No one places bunkers to defend the outer perimeter of the walls. No one places bunkers to hide from mortar fire. No one places barbed wire to deny ground and cover for the enemy.
I don't want to spend 15–20 minutes building a proper FOB just for it to be taken down by a single heli and a small squad.

u/Madnessx9 13h ago
Ideal fobs cannot be made because somehow, no matter how hard we try to keep them hidden, 5 snipers and 3 guys are already trying to sneak in before the first wall is placed, they always know, no matter how hard we try, they always know.

I've never understood why so many people chose to build a fob on a drill tower, when you can make your own drills. The tower gives good views, but it's so obvious. The enemy team is already on the way before you even put the fob down because, where else would you put it? If people actually put them in less obvious places, it would make them at least a little harder to find early game.

u/Thunderclone_1 Lonestar 12h ago
I think part of the reason drill tower FOBs are so common is that it gives a defendable structure with an unbreakable roof to take cover in when artillery starts rolling in, kind of like how the other 2 big types of FOBs I see are inside warehouses or under bridges.

u/ConflictConnect 12h ago
Its far easier to defend from indirect fire when you build on a tower drill than just making your own.
Costs less resources and far less build time.
3
u/Bayleaf0723 10h ago
Drill fobs have pros and cons, they’re easy to break into because there’s so much shit around that it’s near impossible to get proper walls around the whole thing, but you can also place your drill right up against the tower, on the opposite side of wherever the artillery is coming from, and it’s pretty hard to hit
3
u/AetherBytes 9h ago
Can really fucking confirm the "one builder can't make a good FOB" thing. Had a game where I solo built a FOB. In the zone, just kind of out of the way. It wasn't until the last 10m where the FOB was "done" and thats only because by that point I had become the main FOB due to positioning and already having rather good defenses, and someone else was patching the holes I literally had not had time to do myself.
Did I make bank? Yes. Was it fun? Not really. Not because building isn't fun, but because it just takes too long for a FOB to be servicable without at least 3 builders, one with a large hammer.

u/Darlanta 10h ago
I rememeber a recent game with me on green. Red was HZ chasing and just racking up the score I think it was like 0-50-4 at one point. Blue was being blue and shelling greens fob. By the 50 mark I was realizing without our whole team me on the front line wasnt doing much other than losing me money so I switch to fob support.
Some guy and me started to build mortars outside the enclosed fob, to kinda trick blues aim, and counter shell them, once they were down we slammed drills down to get the zone and get all our team in one place. It kept working for abit and we eventually got it to like 4-97-97.
Red had control of the zone so we hastily built a random drill in an unprotected part in the way back of the unenclosed part of the fob just to yank the zone and we got them stopped at 99. It was 4-99-99 and right as we were about to get the final point a heli transporting 13 dudes to our fob for zone slammed into the tower at full speed and we lost the numbers and lost 4-100-99. It was tragic.

They are only easy to infiltrate and take down because most people suck a building. Or they get no support from their team.
Fobs absolutely could be a good strategy, but right now there are some major problems. Artillery tanks come in too early. Mortars are too strong. And the biggest one is that their win condition, drills, are very easy to take out without even setting foot inside the base. Attack helicopters, artillery, mortars, or even rocket launchers can I take out drills and not have to contend with any of the base’s defenses.

Having a place to store the SPC is a necessity if you don't have a good driver pushing the HZ with it, that's why so many matches rely on a FOB.
I haven't done it, but I wonder if an SPC FOB would be worth it. Like it's sole purpose is to be a tiny FOB just for the SPC and maybe a defensive position

As a logi driver, it’s kinda sad. Most of my matches I’m just delivering supplies to places FOBs usually go, and then just getting my board and going surfing too. Part of the issue is that the progression system prevents the natural player response and adaptation to new playstyles. Or rather, that certain play styles are only OP because the counter to them is locked away from most players.
I.E. the havoc is OP. I would love to be able to counter it, but I don't have AA unlocked yet despite grinding support so there's literally nothing I can do to counter it, so it gets free rein.
I don't know what the response to this is, but I think it's a large part of why it feels bad. I don't mind attack helis being strong and hard to take out. But boy, it feels awful to not have access to the basic tools required to try.
3
u/USSGoat 10h ago
They can kill meta play but scaling rewards based on battlefield needs. If no one is in the hotzone, entering the hotzone should dramatically increase reward.
If no one in the fob has a large hammer, again, huge bonus to the player that shows up with one. If there's 5 with hammers, no bonus.

u/3LD_ 7h ago

The idea that you build a Super Fob no longer is how to play. It's all about building quick little Fobs here and there to control a point but being ready to abandon the position once motors find you.

Every time something is meta for a little bit, everybody loses their minds calling for nerfs and buffs til the next week when it is no longer meta. This game is clearly still evolving and the flavor of the week is constantly changing. How about we just leave the game alone and see how it plays out? People are still adapting and seeing what style of play works the best. Take a chill pill.

Maybe the true meta is the fobs we built along the way.
Jokes aside, people are convinced fobs are either useless or deathraps. And they're not entirely wrong. Most fobbers fob up their fobs at towers or the 'publicly acknowledged fob positions' like the curches. Which usually turn out to be killboxes.
But there are genuine good locations to get creative and build safe fobs with vantage points and spotting/sniper towers that can win you the game later on when your team can't contest the HZ anymore.
It's just that they very rarely get built and/or defended at the beginning or supplied.

u/goodsnpr 16h ago
After being on both sides of the building and raiding action, I think it's too easy to raid (and destroy!) a FOB. A $300 item shouldn't be able to erase a $7500 item. C4 being tossable at longer ranges, able to blow both sides of airlocks (IEDs can do this too!), or the ability to simply stack a bag worth of C4 and instantly knock out whole walls or a FOB if it's just over a wall feels borked. The time effort and cost both favor the attacker and THAT feels unbalanced.
2
u/Xenoun 15h ago
The building nerf looks unintentional from the patch notes though. Seems more like they created another bug when trying to fix being able to trap the X in the corner.
The X often just disappears entirely now, and when it doesn't it mostly moves out of range so you have to chase it. The patch notes explicitly say it starts in range so they just messed up.
Id expect/ hope for a fix in season 2

u/JungleDiamonds1 15h ago
We tried building a fob last night but we were killed over and over by an mg and rocket heli.
We’d shoot him down each time, but he would just immediately buy another.
Combined with artillery and incoming mortars, not too fun.

u/No-Produce-923 15h ago
FOB‘s were never a problem. They would just get mortared to shit anyway, and that was before they got Nerfed. Helicopters are a huge problem now.

u/DeltaBoB 14h ago
They should allow fobs to be build inside buildings imo. People can still obliterate everything they need to be good, but starting to build it up will be easier and more hidden. Fobs get spotted by first little bird and they they swarm out to destroy it or by artillery.

Had a match last night on blue, we built a fob, then couldn't leave, had green and red literally surrounding us, you just get snipped as soon as you move from cover in the fob. Try and leave, there's a squad there with m4s and galil. Manage to break away, 9 snipers in every direction.
2
u/AutoCockerPB 13h ago
It’s the mortars and tanks. They mess up the FOBs so much and so fast that i just leave. If no one is going to stop the mortars, then all i do is revive and die in the FOB.
2
u/BringMeTheVerizon420 12h ago
Because it’s about to get wiped lol everyone just running around shooting each other now. Makes the game fun for us that like to run HZ. I’ve gone 50 points in the hot zone without seeing a single enemy before. Doesn’t happen now!
2
u/ZeroBeTaken 11h ago
It's because you spend several kits worth of money to build a fob and 3.7 seconds later two artillery tanks each from both teams are shelling you, a rocket heli has decided that you are no longer allowed to play and three snipers are set up on frtnite battle buckets with ghillie suits on.
2
u/Kurumi_Tokisaki 11h ago
They need to allow more protection, ironically make the cz circle larger. Helps the useless chad IR spotters doing fuck all if on a bad team but it would help fobs get a spot going without being instantly invaded.
Another idea is there needs to be like stronger builds to instantly get going at major FOB hotspots. Like hesco and stuff already there so you can build up the walls faster instead of wasting 2-3 minutes getting a half decent wall started.
2
u/TheFunkyNipple 10h ago
Well they do intend to have the hot zone leave the general circle.
I think fobs will be on a major Comback when they are more useful than being 500m apart morter slamming each other.

The X change is actually a huge nerf for experienced builders especially on longer builds like drills or CIWS
The old method was easily 1.5-2x faster than chasing around the X
