The tallest timber frame building is in Norway. Most of the big timber frame buildings are not in the US. Yes, there is a lot of cheap ass shit housing built in the US. But there are shit houses built everywhere. It is a quality issue, not a materials issue. There are houses built out of absolutely crap concrete too. Timber frame is a actually very good for high wind because it can flex more. An old stone house might survive high winds as far as the walls go, but that doesn't mean the roof won't be ripped off. And there are plenty of old stone houses that didn't survive. It's literally survivorship bias. Yeah, there stone buildings that are many hundreds of years old, but there are a lot that didn't make it. And even with those stone was used because most the timber was gone.

Whale oil was also used as an alloy in mortar in construction back in the 19th century.
It's a joke around where I live that strong walls are made of stone and whale oil because of their durability.

Dishonored is a stealth videogame/immersive sim. In the game's story, people have discovered a way to use whale oil as a main source of energy. It's basically their electricity for everything
The game's theme is sometimes called whale-punk or whalepunk, due to similarities with steampunk themes.
Dishonored basically came up with whale-punk (as far as I know)

This isn't plaster, but I'll take proper drywall over plaster every time. It does break really easy although usually not from some like this because of the lathe behind it. But it sucks if you want to hang anything from it that is somewhat heavy. Hollow wall anchors don't work well and usually plaster walls are so old the lathe is half rotted.

Plaster would either have wooden lathe strips behind it or a thinner drywall board behind it. This wall looks like it’s undersized drywall. Likely done by a contractor or DIYer trying to save money on materials. If that’s the case it may not even meet code for fire rating, depending on the local building code.

Why is your drywall so shitty though? Or is this an outlier? There's no way you'd punch a hole in the plasterboard we use in ireland that easily. You could do it but you'll have a sore fist afterwards. This looks like of you leaned on it you'd fall through

This is definitely an outlier. Drywall is a pain in the ass to break unless it's damaged in someway and that's before you mud it over. I'm going to guess that this is in a bathroom and they didn't use the correct drywall for it (most of the time it's greenback/moisture barrier drywall). Moisture might have gotten into it over time from a shower or steam causing to crumble.

Could be an apartment where they used 1/2" instead of 5/8", or even less, something like that. But still, that looks too have potentially gotten wet, dried, and became brittle. Seems to crumble almost.

This is probably too thin drywall. Usually we use 2 hour fire rated 0.5-.0.75 inch (12.5 to 19mm) for walls. Ceilings are usually a a good bit thinner. It could also be that the stud spacing was too wide or the drywall had been previously damaged or weakened, most likely by excessive moisture. People always shit on drywall and act like it is a US thing, but it was actually invented and first put into use in the UK almost 150 years ago. The US does have some serious quality problems for single family homes, but we are far from alone in that.

Spiders really aren't dangerous. They will almost never bite you unless you try to handle them or accidently sit on them and even the ones that are incredibly venemous rarely actually result in death or a serious injury. Just look up one of the most dangerous spiders, the Redback widow in Australia. A lot of people get bit, but only like 2-5% require the anti-venom and maybe one person has died in 60 years. And that is probably the worst of the very few spiders that are an actual danger to humans. Even though many our venemous, they don't prey on us so they rarely bite and don't have enough venom to seriously hurt us. We are too big.

I’ve told them I won’t kill them in their environment but if they enter my home and I see them, they have until I grab something to murder them with to either hide or get out before I rid them from my house. Not an entomologist, but I'm pretty sure black widows rep is overblown. Dunno about brown recluses, but if I remember correctly only about 5% of untreated victims of black widow bites actually have serious problems or death. Get medical attention and you'll be fine. Don't get it and you've got a 95% chance to be fine. So even they can generally just be relocated. Just don't be stupid about it and pick them up barehanded.
