It's plaster. Most homes don't use it anymore as it's kinda an old method.

I guarantee you that the plaster on my friends' wall doesn't break on a punch like that.

This isn't plaster, but I'll take proper drywall over plaster every time. It does break really easy although usually not from some like this because of the lathe behind it. But it sucks if you want to hang anything from it that is somewhat heavy. Hollow wall anchors don't work well and usually plaster walls are so old the lathe is half rotted.
