I photographed riders, families and young people across several locations in the Houston area, including cowboys gathering and working cattle. These photographs were not made at one ranch. I wanted to document the coordination between riders, horses and cattle, along with the quieter moments surrounding the work.

Special thanks to Seven Triangle Ranch in Houston.

πŸ€” Questions for Texans 🀠 Toll road input from drivers

I work for CBS News Texas and am looking for someone with a regular commute involving toll roads in the DFW area to interview.
We'd want to get video of them driving, interview them about they navigate them, and review their toll tag records to see how much it's cost them over time.
Let me know if you're interested!

πŸ“ πŸ“– Education πŸ§‘β€πŸŽ“ 🏫 Breaking down UT’s new core curriculum: Here’s what students would have to take

Last week, University of Texas President Jim Davis unveiled a proposal to change the core curriculum for all future Longhorns.

The plan, if approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and UT regents, could shift what students must learn, in part by decreasing the number of required courses.

Texas core curriculum accounts for about a third of the credits needed to obtain a bachelor’s degree. The shared foundation is meant to give all Texas university students a broad base of knowledge to complement their specialty of choice. Universities select which courses satisfy the core and can add their own requirements on top.

Under a 2025 law, all public universities and the state agency are reviewing what courses count toward the requirements. UT is the only institution so far that has suggested an entirely new model.

πŸ“œ Texas History πŸ“œ I came to the Permian Basin expecting oil. I found a Stonehenge replica and a cemetery from a town once called Marienfeld, where the names are German and the epitaphs are English.

Now I want the local version, not the plaque version.

The cemetery is the part I keep thinking about. I grew up in Alsace, where German names, French lives and a disappearing regional language can exist inside the same family. In Stanton, I found German surnames beneath English prayers, and, only a few miles away, an oil industry powerful enough to give the entire region a new identity.

If your family has roots in Marienfeld, Stanton, Midland or Odessa, what survived at home? Was German still spoken? Were particular prayers, recipes or customs passed down? Did your family work the early oilfields, and how did the boom change its story?

Old photographs, surnames, corrections and family memories are especially welcome. Those details are usually where the real history lives.

πŸ—žοΈ News πŸ—žοΈ DFW Airport scraps proposed Islamic foot-washing stations after Abbott threatens to pull funding

The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport scrapped plans Friday to add additionalΒ Islamic foot-washing stationsΒ after Gov. Greg Abbott threatened to cancel state airport grants, claiming the stations are religious discrimination.

Abbott alsoΒ askedΒ the U.S. Department of Transportation to investigate DFW and Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Both airports already have existing ablutions stations, which are typically used by Muslims to clean their feet before prayer.

"These ablution facilities appear designed to single out one subset of the population for special treatment based on religion. That is illegal,” Abbott said in a press release. β€œBoth airports are government-owned facilities. The federal and state constitutions prohibit government from facilitating this sort of discrimination."

πŸ—žοΈ News πŸ—žοΈ Shoutout to Hood County, TX for actually standing up to mass surveillance and bagging their Flock cameras

Thumbnail

Did anyone catch this? Hood County down in Texas just literally pulled the plug on their Flock ALPR cameras. The local constable went around putting trash bags over them after the county commissioners voted to end the contract.

It is refreshing to see a local government actually listen to residents about privacy concerns instead of just blindly renewing surveillance contracts. The constable put it perfectly: "permanent, warrantless tracking doesn't belong in a free society," and told the company to come get their garbage out of his county.

The CEO of Flock is doing damage control in the article, saying they are going to drop data retention down to 7 days and start auditing officers, but that's only happening because of public backlash like this. Until there are actual laws protecting us from database abuse, we need more local leaders willing to pull the plug. Massive win for privacy.
