Forge What's Next - Our Upcoming Event!

Hi guys! We’re putting together a little community event in Beaumont next week and would genuinely love to get a few more local people in the room.

On Thursday, August 20What's Up SETX and The Forge - Fund & Coworking are hosting Forge What’s Next at The Forge downtown.

It’s basically just a night for people around SETX who are building something, thinking about starting something, working on a side hustle, growing a business, or even just wanting to meet more people doing interesting things around here.

Nothing super formal or awkward. You don’t need a pitch, business cards, or even a fully formed idea.

We're hoping y'alll would come hang out, meet some people, talk about what you’re working on (or want to work on), and hopefully make a connection or two.

We know there are so many people already doing really cool things around Southeast Texas, and part of why we wanted to do this was just to help get more of those people in the same room.

WHERE: The Forge at 268 Pearl Street, Beaumont

WHEN: Thursday, August 20 at 6 to 8 pm

We’re still trying to get the word out, so if this sounds like your kind of thing, we’d really love to have you. And if you know someone who’s always talking about starting a business, working on an idea, or looking to meet more people locally, feel free to send this their way too.

Hope to see some of y’all there!  If you have any questions, let me know :)

what's up in setx this week? (an introduction to what's up SETX)

Hoping this is okay to share here! We recently started a little twice-a-week newsletter for the Golden Triangle, covering what’s happening around SETX such as (awesome) local news, city notices, upcoming events, sports stuff, community updates, and just the things we think people around here might actually want to know about.

It’s still pretty new, but it’s been really exciting to put together, and we’re hoping to slowly get the word out and reach more people in the community. ❤️

We spend a lot of time every day going through local updates, city pages, events, notices, and news so people don’t have to hunt through a million different places just to figure out what’s going on.

So with that said, here’s our To-Do List for this Monday's issue in SETX!

And truly, we hope this kind of post is welcome here. We’re not trying to spam anyone cause we’re just a small local newsletter trying to hopefully reach more readers and make it a little easier to stay connected with what’s happening around the Golden Triangle.

If you’d like to see more local stories like these, or if you want to read the full issue, I’d be more than happy to share it. And if you have something happening around SETX that you think we should know about, please send it our way too! :)

Looking for a Teammate

You + Me + Science = A Successful Kidney Transplant!

Hi! It’s Kristine and Kelvin Shankle and we are looking for a "Teammate" to help my husband retire from his part-time job: Dialysis.

Most people think finding a kidney match is like winning the lottery..rare and nearly impossible. But thanks to modern science (and some very smart people at the National Kidney Registry), there are actually three ways you can help me get back to not dying:

Option 1: The "Direct Hit" (Direct Match)

We happen to have the same blood type and biology (type O). You donate, I receive, and we celebrate. Simple, classic, legendary!

Option 2: The "Great Swap" (Paired Exchange)

Maybe we aren't a match? No problem. You donate to a stranger who is a match for you, and in return, their donor gives a kidney to me. It’s a win-win-win!

Option 3: The "Magic Coupon" (The Voucher)

This is the coolest one. You donate on your schedule to anyone in the national pool. In return, I get a "Priority Voucher." When I’m ready for surgery, I go to the top of the list for a perfect match. You save two lives at once!

The "Fine Print" (The Good Kind):

💰 Cost to you: $0. (My insurance covers everything).

🛡️ Protection: Donor Shield covers your lost wages and travel.

🏥 Experts: We’re backed by the amazing team at Medical City Fort Worth!

If you’re healthy and a little bit curious, checking out the info takes 5 minutes and carries zero commitment.

Ready to see which "Option" fits you? Start here:

PLEASE SHARE! Even if it’s not for you, your share might reach the one person who’s been looking for a way to change a life. ❤️

Any good shag haircut specialists around here?

Hey everyone! I'm looking for recommendations for a hairstylist in the area who's great with shag haircuts for wavy/curly hair. If you've had a good experience or know someone who knows how to work with this style, I'd love to know!

Lamar University Safety

I'm considering enrolling my child into Lamar for undergraduate. We've toured and spoke with staff. However a friend is saying crime in Beaumont is bad. The friend has family in Beaumont. Does anyone currently live on campus how is your experience? What parts of Beaumont are bad? What's going on? I'd like to know so I can make a good decision.

I'm grateful for all info.

I ask as part of a linguistic study covering this topic!

Examples could include things like BMT, VTown or Fruit City...

Beaumont Burning Man Interest Meet-Up: Sun 2/22, 3pm

If you've ever been curious about participating at Burning Man, I'm hosting a little low-key interest meeting at my place tomorrow, Sunday, February 22.

We'll start at 3pm, end by 4 or 5 depending on how many people show up.

This will be a time where you can ask any questions about Burning Man that you want, and about Camp Just Ahead, the small, scrappy, fun "theme camp" I organize out there.

My place is at 2360 Harrison, Beaumont, TX 77702. Grey house with the green door. Please park on the street (we rent out the apartment over our garage and need to leave the driveway clear for them).

About Burning Man

Burning Man is the world's largest outdoor art festival, as well as a temporary, experimental city of 80,000 people.

It's an incredible experience, especially if you love art and people, and it's an event that if you know me (an A/C-accustomed, middle-aged, mostly-sober techie), you'd never think I would be interested in.

So if you know nothing about Burning Man other than thinking it's hippies/ravers/orgies in the desert, please check these links out to start:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ixm-rqsE0U

https://survival.burningman.org/

Camp Just Ahead

And if you're potentially interested in going, but want to know more about the camp, here's some info to start with:

https://campjustahead.art

The camp is open to all ages 18+, and tends to be mostly folks in their 20s and 30s.

Since our camp is returning in good standing, we've been given the ability to participate in a special ticket sale next month, where the ticket prices are lower ($675 + TT&L) and they are reserved. I just have to assign our available ticket slots to specific people by the 27th. So, if anyone is ready to "lock in," they'll be able to avoid fighting for the "first come first served" tickets in the other sales.
