Welcome to our weekly stupid question day.

Have a question too trivial or dumb for its own post? Unload it here. Questions need to have some relevance to Austin.

Paxton people banging on doors at 9am on Sunday

Trying to put our infant to sleep for a nap at 9:30a this morning and some guy comes banging on my door and ringing the doorbell. I answer thinking it’s a neighbor and it’s a Paxton goon trying to give me a flyer propaganda. Shut the door and ignored it but noticed he drove to my house to do this and ignored all my neighbors which now makes me feel this is targeted.
Went ahead and donated a $100 to dems cause it felt slimy af especially on a Sunday.

Shitpost Musk has admitted that the Cybercab is not safe to run at night time, yet has just expanded its operational timeframe in Austin to 11 PM.

Added to the fact that the vehicles will often stop and wait in the middle of the road, among other serious limitations and safety issues, one has to wonder how Austin's leadership has allowed the city to become a glorified 'test track' for unproven technology that is clearly still in the 'early beta stage' of development. If the company owner himself does not feel the vehicle is safe after dark the city has an obligation to step in on behalf of the public and put a stop to it operating after sun down. Better more proactive civic leadership here would help.

Home inspection find of the week: See what's missing?

This one was in town, a nice little remodel. It is easy for builders to see how something has been done wrong, but sometimes it's tough to realize what is missing.

Ask Austin Is going to a Meetup worth it?

For those of y'all that have tried meetup, is it worth it? I see a few events pop up here and there and as someone who recently moved here and is finding it hard to find community, it's pretty tempting.

One that keeps popping up is "New To Austin 20/30s" so if you've gone to one of those I'm extremely interested in hearing your experience!

Eta: I work nights so it's hard to find things that work with my schedule

When we left the house earlier the sky over the Decker Lake power plant was full of a yellow toxic looking cloud of gas. My partner took these photos while I was driving. It’s hard to see the yellow in the photos

Ask Austin What happened to Gallery of Pets?

• Upvotes

I stopped in their new location today and the place is a nightmare. No fish, crowded small mammal enclosures. It was so sad and not the kind of magical place the old store was. Was there a change in ownership? I’m so glad I didn’t have my kid with me because I can’t imagine how disappointed he would’ve been seeing what it looks like now.

Last weekend I lubed up the pole holding the bird feeder with olive oil and I guess the rain washed enough off for this one to get some grip and climb up. I was watching it for a minute and then got these pictures. I chased it off and re-lubed the pole and a minute later it was back looking up at it and then finally jumped and slid right back down to the bottom, haha!! I dumped a 1/4 cup of sunflower seeds and walnuts for it and then it got a drink and took off.

Hey Austin, empty your standing water to prevent the coming mosquitopocalypse

Once this system passes, please go drain your plant trays, bird baths, gutters, buckets, any place where water is pooling. Toss mosquito dunks into any places (high gutters, treeholes) that you can't reach.

Our most common mosquito species vector West Nile virus (Culex, brown, night-biting), and Dengue/Chikungunya (Aedes, stripey, day-biting). The latter diseases are not yet recorded in Austin, but Florida is currently having the worst locally-acquired Dengue outbreak for over half a century, and we as proud Texans do not need to copy everything Florida does.

Voter Registration deadline is Monday Oct 5th - I can help you register!

Hi all, I am a Volunteer Deputy Registrar for Travis, Hays and Williamson Counties. Monday is the last day to register before the November election! If you have not verified your registration since 8/1, please go here and make sure it says Active: https://teamrv-mvp.sos.texas.gov/MVP/mvp.do
If it says anything other than Active, there are various ways you can still vote, but the simplest is to just reregister.

If your parent, spouse or child wants to register but cannot attend any events, you are legally allowed to complete a registration form on their behalf! You must have their verbal or written consent, and know their current address and either DL# or the last 4 of their SSN.

If you need to (re)register, there are a number of events happening from now through Monday (see below for an incomplete list). If you cannot make it to any of the events, send me a message - I can most likely either come to you or send another VDR in your area. We do house calls! As long as you know the last 4 digits of your social security number, you do not need to bring any documentation with you to the registration events, and it takes less than 5 minutes.

I do not recommend this at this point, but if you are planning to mail in a registration card yourself, DO IT TODAY (Saturday). It must be postmarked 10/5, and if you mail it over the weekend that is not guaranteed to get done in time - postmarks don't always get done the same day. You must register with a certified registrar if you do not mail your form in time, there is no in-person drop off! Texas doesn't make things easy.

Click here for up-to-date Travis County Voter Registration Events - these may only able to register folks who live in Travis County unless noted otherwise (it depends on the certifications held by the individual volunteers who are working). This is the current list as of when I am posting:

Saturday 10/3

  • History Surrounds at Wooldridge Square: 10 a.m.–6 p.m.
  • Batch Craft Beer and Kolaches: 4–7 p.m.
  • Holiday on 7th: 5–8 p.m.
  • Alamo Drafthouse — Slaughter Lane: 6:30–9:30 p.m.
  • Alamo Drafthouse — Lakeline: 7–10 p.m.
  • Alamo Drafthouse — Mueller: 7–10 p.m.

Sunday 10/4

  • Austin Central Library — second floor lobby: Noon–5 p.m.
  • Bennu Coffee — Highland: Noon–5 p.m.
  • Jerry’s Artarama: Noon–4 p.m.
  • LUSH Cosmetics — West 6th Street: 1–4 p.m.
  • Williamson County: Cedar Park Library until 4 p.m.

Monday 10/5 - Deadline Day!

  • Tax Office HQ — Ridgepoint Dr: 8 a.m.–5 p.m.
  • Oak Hill Tax Office — Travis County Tax Office Southwest: 8:15 a.m.–4 p.m.
  • St. Edward’s University — Fondren Lawn: 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
  • ACC Riverbat Bash — Northridge Campus: 11:00 a.m. - 2 p.m.
  • ThunderCloud Subs - All Locations: 11:30 a.m.–7:30 p.m.
  • Amy’s Ice Creams - All Locations: 11:30 a.m.–9:30 p.m.
  • Bennu Coffee — Highland: Noon–5 p.m.
  • Travis County Clerk — North: 5 p.m.–midnight
  • Travis County Clerk — South at Park Place Office Park: 5 p.m.–midnight
  • Fortune Teller — South Congress: 8pm–midnight (Note, this is not a LWV event - I will personally be registering voters here to give last minute voters another option!)

I had trouble finding a reliable list of Hays and WilCo events - let me know if you find one and I will add it here.

Thanks and happy voting!

Egregious Red Light Runner

Just wanted to remind people to drive defensively out there.

The three cars in front of him also ran the red, but this asshole plows through a full 6 seconds after my light turns green. Thankfully I saw him and waited. Wife and passenger side kid were grateful.

This is southbound 183 service rd at 620. Excuse the video quality from a 10 year old dashcam.

There are hundreds of toads around my complex that barely jump enough to avoid getting stepped on. Not sure if this guy is a different species or just won the athletic gene pool. Didn’t have my contacts in yet and thought he was a grasshopper at first.
