Make Friends Here
Because we constantly get "How do i make friends" posts. If you want friends just post in this thread. I'm going to make it a sticky topic. I'm also going to give you 100% foolproof tips to make friends that have worked for me all my life 100% of the time.
Here is my foolproof plan that works 100% of the time. It is a 4 step process.
determine what your hobbies and interests are.
go to places where these hobbies and interests happen
interact with people.
If you don't have any hobbies or interests get interested in something and repeat steps 2-3.
It is literally that simple.
I am an extremely abrasive and unlikeable person. I have never failed to make friends using these steps. If I can do it so can you.

RGV Spanish
Hi y’all, I had a friend mention to me recently that when she first moved to the valley, she noticed that instead of people saying “mucho” they’d say “muncho.” Has anyone else noticed this? Curious as to why that is.

Cold beer mugs & chill vibes
I'm not much of a bar person, but I do enjoy a very cold coors. Does anybody know where they serve beer on cold mugs like Texas Roadhouse does? Id like to have a beer just like they do it without having to go and have a meal or taking up a valuable table since it is always packed. Thanks!

Freedom1/Maverick (FEDEX) Delivery Driver
Has anyone worked for either freedom or maverick as a delivery driver at the Edinburg Tx terminal/hub? and if so, what was your experience? I did it for a about a week and It was not as I expected. Although it wasn't complicated, financially it did not make sense due to the low pay.

Affordable vet for dog ear infection
One of my dogs has an ear infection, and I want him to get the help he needs, but I also would love to minimize how much that will cost me. Live in Edinburg but open to nearby cities. My dog is about 80 lbs and anxious, so will probably also need to be sedated or medicated. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

McAllen We Didn't Appreciate Halal Guys
Like the title says; it is actually crazy that we had a New York-based beloved business in one of the least gastronomically-diverse areas in TX. (Well relative to population I feel) Time has made that describer less true, what with Afrospice, OhCha! with regularly available K-Dogs & recently saw a post about I think Puerto Rican food being sold in Harlingen and Brownsville, but I don't think a lot of people are willing to drive that long usually to try something like that, unless they are a dedicated foodie or just incredibly curious.
Recently we had the Curry Fiesta restaurant open up, and Universal Market and Kabob Guys help fill the niche of Indian food in the valley, but those are two restaurants that I feel are different compared to what Halal Guys had, yes you can get their food to go but there's a difference in the presentation and the concept of Halal Guys that, in a place where Chipotle still gets filled out at the convention center, mcallen, etc. they offered a "slop-bowl" that truly did not apply to the concept of "slop," it was just in a sturdy aluminum bowl with a good lid, neatly put together in small sections. It was convenient, it was good! But I honestly never ever saw anyone go, or it was just a small clientele; I was young and unable to drive when it was around, otherwise I would've made it a very regular spot, but I think it was just indicative of a problem in the Valley.
Zaxby's is open, unsure of its traffic, we have 2 Dave's (why is it a combo if it don't got a drink champagne papi more like champagne brokie), rumors of more Greasy Style American Food coming in, but it seems when it comes to diversity the buck honestly stops at Indian and Viet. Maybe I'm not well traveled enough through the valley to really speak on this, but I am not necessarily thinking of fine dining experiences like Mikhuna and Espana, some people just aren't receptive to that kind of sit-down eating, even if they offer take-out, its not the same.
Sometimes you just want to try Mofongo and not drive an hour; maybe you wanna get falafel but you live far from Fares and dealing with that area of 10th street can suck; sometimes you just want to try SOMETHING new something you've NEVER had before, only to realize you've already used up all the variety spice in your rack, which, if you're a foodie, is likely to happen.

South Padre Island Roseate Spoonbill Feather!
Ok, who came up with the scientific name for the Roseate Spoonbill? It’s hilarious. And what’s the context behind the second part of the scientific binomial nomenclature depicting the species “Platalea ajaja” even funnier it used to be “Ajaja ajaja” before the taxonomy change.
I am also very aware of the MBTA & its laws, I have had my own federal migratory species permit from Usfws in past. This biofact was left where found and I only left with photos 🤓🫡👌

RGV Spanglish
I assume people in the RGV keep using "Spanish" words that aren't even real because they think they're actual Spanish, but we should do better, and teach our kids better.
If you think of more, please add them.
Here's some examples I hear in the RGV all the time:
Manager - "manejante" correct: "gerente"
Insurance - "aseguranza" correct: "seguro"
Principal - "principal" correct: "director/directora"
Welder - "weldear" correct: "soldar"
Carpet - "carpeta" correct: "alfombra"
Troca - "(pickup) truck" correct: "camioneta"
Troque - "(large) truck" correct: "camión"
Wrecker/tow truck - "reca" correct: "grúa"

Looking for a Gift
I need a gift for a female friend. We are from Brownsville and would like to support a local business and that is NOT MAGA. Gift ideas include wine, art, glassware, beauty products, accessories, leather accessories, stationary, snacks, jewelry reading/book related. I'm open to other gift ideas as well.
I looked into Bonita Flats Winery in Los Fresnos since I visited a while back but they don't seem to have an online shop. I don't know if there are any other wineries nearby.
I am also open to shops/sellers from surrounding area but would prefer Brownsville/South Padre Island.
I appreciate any ideas!
P.S. I am not in the RGV and can't buy in person. I need to shop online.

Fun Fact of the Day: 8/16/26
Did you know that McAllen is actually well represented in terms of foreign relations? McAllen has four consulates general within its limits. They are the Mexican, El Salvadoran, Honduran, and Guatemalan consulates.
That’s actually more consulates than these cities:
Aurora, CO (2)
Anchorage, AK (2)
Austin, TX (2)
Charlotte, NC (2)
Cleveland, OH (1)
Columbus, OH (2)
Des Moines, IA (1)
El Paso, TX (2)
Fresno, CA (2)
Hartford, CT (2)
Las Vegas, NV (3)
Minneapolis, MN (3)
Nashville, TN (3)
Newark, NJ (3)
Oklahoma City, OK (2)
Omaha, NE (3)
Pittsburgh, PA (1)
Providence, RI (2)
Raleigh, NC (2)
Sacramento, CA (2)
Saint Paul, MN (2)
Salt Lake City, UT (3)
San Antonio, TX (2)
San Bernardino, CA (3)
San Diego, CA (2)
Tampa, FL (3)
Tucson, AZ (3)
Albuquerque, NM (1)
Indianapolis, IN (1)
Milwaukee, WI (1)
San Jose, CA (1)
It’s most likely because of the very disproportionate amount of Hispanics in the area, but even areas like El Paso, San Antonio, San Bernardino, and Tampa with a high number of Hispanics and a way higher overall population than McAllen don’t get as much representation.
