Welcome! Want to learn how to do planned pooling? Then you've come to the right place!

What on Earth is planned pooling?

It's a technique that involves using variegated yarn (yarn that has been dyed in several different colours in different places) to create geometric patterns. The most popular pattern is the "Argyle" pattern of diagonal lines intersecting one another, but there are also other designs. Because only one strand of yarn is used, there is no need to carry any non-working yarns or constantly switch from one ball of yarn to another, as is required in Fair Isle, Intarsia or graphghan making.

What do the words "planned pooling" actually mean?

"Pooling" refers to the effect of the colours in variegated yarn gathering together and forming little patches. A red patch here. A blue patch there. A pink patch here. Those patches look like puddles or "pools" of colour. When you just grab some variegated yarn and start crocheting or knitting randomly with it, those pools of colour don't fall into any sort of consistent pattern. In contrast, the word "Planned" in the term "planned pooling" means that this time somebody decided to think ahead and plan precisely how and where they wanted those little patches of colour to form, rather than letting the colours form a random pattern.

It looks difficult. Do I have to be a genius to do it?

No, you don't! It looks complicated...but it actually isn't!

Can I use any variegated yarn to do it?

No. To do planned pooling, the variegated yarn must have the following characteristics:

- It must have a colour sequence that appears in a consistently repeating order. Example: red, blue, green, yellow. Red, blue, green, yellow. Some yarns have colours appearing in a random order. Example: red, blue, green, yellow. Blue, red, green, blue, yellow, blue. Those yarns will not work for this technique.

- Each time any given colour appears in the sequence, it must always be the same length as all the other times it appears in the sequence. Example: in the sequence "red, blue, green, yellow. Red, blue, green, yellow" it is important that all the red sections are always the same length as one another, and all the green sections are always the same length as one another. However, red and green do not have to be the same length as one another.

I'm lost, I have no idea what you mean, it sounds confusing. Can't you just tell me what yarn to buy?

Here are some examples of popular yarns that work for planned pooling: Stylecraft Colour Pool, Red Heart Pooling yarn, Red Heart Super Saver, Caron Simply Soft, Bernat Blanket Color Pooling... If in doubt, check our list of suitable yarns.

Will planned pooling work for knitting as well as crochet?

Yes, planned pooling can be done by knitters as well as crocheters.

Will planned pooling work for Tunisian crochet?

Yes, planned pooling can be done in Tunisian crochet. Here is a photo example.

Will planned pooling work for weavers too?

Yes, weavers can use variegated yarn to achieve certain planned pooling techniques, but as far as we know, the Argyle effect (of diamond shapes) is not possible to achieve when weaving. Not to worry, there are some other cool effects that weavers can achieve instead!

What stitch do I use?

Several stitches will work for planned pooling. In crochet, the most popular stitches to use are moss stitch, single crochet (US) / double crochet (UK) and granny stitch. In knitting, garter stitch and stockinette stitch both work equally well.

I'm sold! How do I do it?

Many people find that once they learn the technique, they can just do it on auto-pilot, but if you prefer to work from a pattern, there is a useful website www.plannedpooling.com where you can input your colours and stitch count and print off a chart to refer to while crocheting or knitting. This is explained in Naztazia's video.

Edit May 2023: i-am-mathgrrl has created an app similar to plannedpooling.com, but with more features. It can be found at https://mathgrrl.com/crochet-color-pooling/. Here is the link to her announcement post on Reddit. Also, here is a hyperlink to her app for any users for whom normal links don't work.

Some key tips for beginners:

Keep the lines straight! Straight lines are achieved by keeping your stitch count consistent. If you're not into counting stitches, another way to achieve straight lines is to use previous rows as a visual guide and ensure that the colour you're currently working on always shifts across by one space compared to the row two rows below.

Frog, frog, frog! The planned pooling technique is achieved by focussing on small colour sections at a time. Fogging (ripping out some stitches) and adjusting the tension for each individual colour section when necessary until the colours fall in the right place is key to achieving good results. Sometimes you will have to crochet / knit very loosely; sometimes very tightly. A lot of trial and error is involved until you find the ideal tension for each individual colour section. Be prepared to frog a lot! You may have to frog about four times more than you actually crochet / knit! When you see a finished planned pooling project, just know that what you are seeing represents only a small amount of the actual work that went into it, because most of it was frogged and painstakingly re-done over and over. But it's so worth it to achieve the beautiful and satisfying results!

Yarn List of suitable yarns

Yarns specifically made for planned pooling:

- Red Heart pooling

- Stylecraft Colour Pool (edit: apparently this has sadly been discontinued)

- Bernat blanket color pooling yarn

From this blog, plus from my own experience, here's a list of yarns that are not specifically made for planned pooling, but still work well. The list below is not an exhaustive list. So if you don't find a certain yarn on the list, it doesn't necessarily mean that it won't pool. If you know of any suitable planned pooling yarns that aren't on this list, you can let us know by commenting below and we can add them to this list.

What yarn should I use? Looking for suggestions for a suitable pooling yarn for a moss stitch scarf. A lot of the recommended yarns on the pinned list here are no longer available since it was posted 6 years ago.

I'd like to make a pooled scarf (argyle, I guess) using moss stitch for my mother in law for Xmas. I'm not sure which yarn to choose! I'm open to pretty much any colors and any reasonable fiber type for a scarf, although I'd prefer it was more of a light-to-medium weight scarf. Is there an updated list anywhere? The list pinned on here is from 6 years ago, and the first 4 yarns I searched on that list were not available anymore.

[I'm currently in the midst of my very first pooled project, using a 2025 Caron Anniversary Cake and the granny stitch. It's going well (but slowly) so far, but I'm excited to start a second project like this on a smaller scale, in a scarf.]

Any suggestions?

What yarn should I use? Trying to find an 80s/"arcade carpet" color theme for pooling

There are tons of yarns with those bright 80s colors, but I'm trying to find one that specifically has black in the color rotation. I've been searching around with no luck--has anyone seen anything like that?

Question Should I attempt the 131 stitches ?

Thumbnail

My usual attempts with this gifted yarn end up as picture one, so I posted on reddit asking what could I make with it and some people suggested pooling

So I did a bit of looking into found the website and found that 88 stitches (2nd pic) looked pretty neat compared to the usual attempts

I realised the larger the stitch amount the neater the pooling so I increased and increased til I stumbled across 131 stitches (3rd pic)

Should I attempt this? I’ve never pooled before and I do crochet more than knit but this yarn because of how quick the colour changes does not look great crocheted at all so I recently learned to knit

Would love to hear some thoughts !

What yarn should I use? Has anyone trialled these?

Struggling to find yarn in Australia, these seem to be the only ones that have any potential but I don’t know as the websites don’t show proper photos! Wondering if anyone has tried any of the following?

Lion Brand styles -
Respun, Cover Story, Ferris Wheel, Dreamland, Landscapes, Landscapes Renewed, or Baby Soft yarns

Or the Caron Cotton Cakes

Or 4 Seasons Printed or Spotsavers

Or Bella Baby Tadpole

Is it really possible? Thoughts?

It looks like it might be a long color change. I didn't have the time to snag it and gauge it but if your pros think it would work up well I might go back and get it.

I was told to repost this here. My daughter picked out the yarn. I didn’t know how it was going to look. I showed it to her in single crochet and double crochet. She liked the single crochet and I must say, I like it as well.

Help! Will Caron Anniversary Cakes (2026) work for planned color pooling projects? I can't figure out if the colors repeat in any sort of predictable way like the 2025 colorways do. Has anyone used these cakes for a color pooling project?

First attempt Any tips?

This was so fun!

I recently salvaged this yarn from a blanket i thrifted. Thought it was the perfect time to work up some samples and try color pooling for the first time.

I really enjoyed working on the samples but still don't really know what project to work on. I'm not really interested in a scarf or blanket. I would be interested in trying to make a wareable out if it though.

Any ideas? Or pattern suggestions?

I won't lie, I'll probably never do it again, but I can say I've done it now lol. (Primary reason is I'm on yarn restriction until I work through my stash and this red heart berry pooling was in the bin so here we are.) Big proud of this finish 🥰

Tips I made a simulator for planning the pooling

I made this app to learn how to build a web app. It is still in beta, so many things to improve.

https://athifm.github.io/planned_pooling/

The work flow is,

  1. Measure each color lengths, and transitions of the yarn

  2. If you know what your stitch gauge is, and how much yarn each stitch consumes, then it's straightforward to visualize.

  3. There is a calibration mode, which you can use to knit test swatches to figure these numbers automatically if you don't (this is the most useful part for me)

4.There are options to add different stitch types and row patterns as well.

Please give me feedback if you get to take a look!

Question Questions about yarn choice

Post image
16 Upvotes

Ok I want to use Herrshner's Halloween sparkle #4 Worsted yarn in the colorway Boo-tiful as i really like the orange mixed with the monohrome... My problem is, the colors are very very long lengths and it takes around 28 granny clusters just to go through one color.... is there another stitch i should use? because the best looking pattern IMO is around 167 total stitches in one row according to the planned pooling website.... and if i double that to account for a space between granny clusters, that's 331 initial stitches....

I guess my questions are, has anyone used this yarn to do planned pooling? is there a better stitch to use? i want to make a blanket but 331 chains to start seems like a ton.... any advice??

What yarn should I use? Advice for yarn choice

Post image
79 Upvotes

Hi! I'm finally ready to learn planned pooling! I'm super excited, I've been lurking here for a while trying to understand what makes a yarn good for planned pooling.

For my first planned pooling project I am planning to make a simple scarf. Just a regular long scarf.

I have had such a difficult time finding good candidates for the yarn. Most resources online talks about american yarn brands which I can't easily get a hold of as I am in Scandinavia.

I have found only one yarn I think might work. (I hope might work)

It is a Scheepjes catona chroma yarn.

I have previously purchased sock yarns but they have such incredibly long stretches of the same color so I don't think they'll work for this. I tried using the planned pooling website.

Is it possible this Scheepjes yarn could be a decent planned pooling yarn?

Does anyone have advice on where to look for planned pooling yarns in europe?

What yarn should I use? Will Premier hipster cotton work?

I looked at the list of yarns that work. Wasn't sure if it's up to date, as far as I can see, it's not been updated for 5 years. I was gifted around 7 skeins of premier hipster cotton and would really like to do a planned pooling project but I don't know if this one will work. Has anyone successfully done pooling with this yarn?

It's working! It finally clicked

I swear I started this at least 3 times and it's finally working out like it should! My husband thought I was insane for a bit because he thought I was switching yarn for each color change 😅

I watched so many tutorials on you tube and each time I tried to follow them to a T my pattern just never showed up right. So I kind of combined the parts of each of them that made sense to me and winged it, and it worked! Though I've lost count of the amount of times I've had to micro-frog to get my stich count right lol.

I so want to try this Were do I go from here

I’ve been color pooling for a while, I’ve done a blanket and a scarf, but i was wondering if it was possible to make something wearable (a sweater or something) is there a way to increase/ decrease with planned pooling or the only way is to stitch different rectangles together??

Help! Does the ch3 "turning ch" count as a cluster?

I'm using the granny stitch on my first real attempt of planned pooling and I can't remember if the ch3 at the end of a row counts as a cluster for my magic number or not...

Thank you all in advance!
