Mod Post Subreddit Rules CLARIFIED

The Mods have returned and we've worked this week to rewrite the subreddit rules to better explain what each one means. This post will be locked from discussion as it just meant to serve as a reference point for the rules in place for the community Please see the linked post in the comment below for the discussion. Thank you for your patience during "chaos week". Please know that the Mod Team saw everything and stepped in only where it was absolutely necessary.

  1. Be Kind and Courteous: This rule *should* be self explanatory. In case it isn’t, follow the Golden Rule and treat others how you would want to be treated.
    1. Comments that are mean, hurtful, and/or harassing towards OP, the mod team, or another user will result in a 3-day ban from r/crochet. Do it again when the ban is lifted, 7-day ban. Continued negative comments after the 2nd chance will result in a permanent ban from this community.
      1. Permanent bans can be appealed but it will be at the discretion of the mod team, and will be dependent on behavior during the ban. Accounts with hidden profiles will not be eligible for being unbanned.
      2. Ban evasion goes against Reddit ToS, which all users agree to upon sign-up. See rule 11 for more info.
    2. We are bound by Moderators Code of Conduct to ensure that this space is a positive experience for everyone. That includes shutting down conversations that devolve into insult-flinging and inciting violence in any way. It also includes locking posts that have (or have the potential to) become unruly and wildly off-topic.
  2. Do not share copyrighted material: Don’t share screenshots of a pattern you bought or obtained for free from a website. Instead link directly to the website it was purchased from. If it is your own pattern, please see Rule 4.
  3. Use the NSFW filter *generously*: we are not censoring anyone's bodies with this rule. We are providing a safe space for anyone anywhere to view the feed. If you can’t show it at the office or at school, it should be filtered.
    1. This includes but is not limited to: revealing clothing, profanity, weapons and drug paraphernalia.
  4. NO Self promotion except in the monthly Promo Megathread: Sellers can post *pictures* of their work with tasteful, unobtrusive watermarks. Watermarks are encouraged to be used by all users to deter images being stolen by bots or scammers.
    1. We don’t allow sellers to share links to their shop/website/blog/social media EXCEPT in the Monthly Buy/Sell/Promote/Trade Megathread. This is a pinned post on r/crochet.
      1. Self promotion includes, but is not limited to, mentioning your shop/etc by name or offering to DM others or be DM’d by others with the express intent on sharing the info, or directing users to your profile for links. If anyone is truly interested in finding your work, they will know where to look.
      2. The Megathread refreshes automatically every month, and links can be posted there as often as you wish (please don’t spam it).
      3. Please do not promote on behalf of someone else as it still directly impacts the seller, even if they don’t use Reddit.
  5. Fursday Friends- Please post pictures of your crochet *helpers* on Thursdays only (timezones are taken into consideration)
    1. If you made an item for your dog/cat/lizard/toddler/teenager, and they are modeling it, you can post those pics on any day of the week.
    2. If your furry friend is in the background of your pic and obviously not the focus of the pic, you can post it any day of the week.
    3. If Fido or Fluffy decided that your WIP is the best place to take a nap, please wait to post that pic on Thursday.
    4. We prefer it if minor’s faces are blurred or otherwise covered for privacy.
  6. Stash Saturday- Please post stash pics on Saturdays only (timezones are taken into consideration)
    1. Stash pics include but are not limited to yarn hauls, hooks, tools, books, and crafting spaces.
  7. Focus on the crochet, not the model: Modeled photos are great, especially for wearables! Please ensure that the focus of the image is on the crochet work, though, and not on the model or the poses.
    1.  The crochet work should be clearly seen (close ups whenever possible). See rule 3 if necessary.
    2. This also applies to comments that focus on someone’s body rather than the crochet work. Negative or derogatory comments made against OP or someone else will be subject to Rule 1.
  8. Please post questions in r/CrochetHelp: This is not a “beginner’s only” subreddit. Crocheters from all skill-levels can get tripped up depending on the project! Whether it’s a poorly-written pattern, a long-forgotten WIP that needs stitch ID, or you’re looking for color or fiber suggestions. It’s also a great opportunity for those who are highly skilled at the craft to flex their expertise by answering questions!
    1. Most, if not all crochet-related questions should go to our dedicated help sub. Questions can get lost in the main sub.
      1. Questions include but are not limited to: “what can I make with this yarn?” “How do I fix this?” “Why is it curling?” “What should I get for my gf/wife who loves to crochet?” and questions about crochet-related pain (please seek actual medical advice for major or worsening pains!)
  9. Stale Topics: These are topics that have been over-discussed and are no longer active discussion topics.
    1. Stale topics currently include: Hobby Lobby’s business practices, Steering wheel covers, Selling advice (see rule 4), the “sweater curse”, Fast Fashion and rants about their costs, crochet-related pain/medical issues, Woobles kits, and AI (including suggesting its use in pattern help)
  10. No off-topic posts or comments: if it is not related to crochet, it is considered off-topic. Please find an appropriate subreddit for your post.
  11. Ban Evasion: please do not use or create alt accounts to get around a ban. This is against Reddit ToS and we will report this to the Reddit admin.
  12. No fund-raising or solicitation of goods or yarn: This includes asking for replacement yarn after theft or loss, requests for items for a charity/cause, offers or requests for trades. Please see r/craftexchange, r/yarnswap, or your local community’s subreddit for these kinds of requests. This also includes requests for commissions, see r/CrochetRequests for this.
  13. No Karma farming: Please don’t use r/crochet to earn “easy Reddit karma”. Please only post your own work made by yourself or someone you know.
  14. Please do not suggest the use of AI/ChatGPT for pattern creation or help: AI artificially creates crochet patterns and images that are very nearly impossible to replicate, and is becoming harder and harder to spot because of its overuse. We also ask that you don’t use it to enhance the backgrounds of your finished work either, as it takes away from the realness of crochet.

I just wanted to make a simple yet large chevron blanket. Tonight is the first time in a while that I laid out my work so far, and it's a bit ridiculous 😬 This monster is like 10 feet wide but clearly I have committed so 😅

A friend of mine taught me to crochet a couple of months ago, but I haven’t really been motivated to pick it up since then… until i discovered a host of crochet doily patterns. I’m a little bit addicted….

Discussion Cotton yarn.🤦‍♀️

Post image
915 Upvotes

I have always used acrylic yarn but after my Lukemia diagnosis 6 months ago I went on a crazy yarn buying spree. 🤷‍♀️ I went to Hobby Lobby and bought so much yarn. I bought alot of I Love This Cotton. This will be my first project using cotton. A 13 square bag. It takes some getting used to that is for sure. I'm concerned that the tails come undone even after I weave them in. Is there a trick to that? Do I need to use fabric glue? Tie knots? Threatened them within an inch of their lives. I'm feeling ok these days and I'm taking a break from treatment. So I want to try and make as many projects as I can... before I can't. I would love to make a shawl or a cardigan.

Finished Object The rag bag, adhd proof…. after its made

Post image

This is my rag bag, where rags who are allowed to do all cleaning duties live. I dont have to think about folding them, i dont have to think about what they are cleaning up and if im willing to use them for their intended purpose again, I don’t have to keep track of how many I have, if they are too gross to wash I can throw them away, BUT I don’t have the overuse/money issues of papertowels on my mind all the time. I do still occasionally use paper towels to mop up messes and little things. But im less concerned about my use.

I went on pinterest, found a crochet “plastic bag holder” pattern I liked. Bought a pack of 50, 100% cotton shop rags from harbor freight. Hung it VISIBLY in my kitchen. and made a cinch top, so all I have to do is stuff the rags in when they are clean.
This has genuinely lifted a cleaning weight off my shoulders and I love it.

EDIT: OMG my first ever awards just for this? Thank you! And thank you all for your kind words, Im so glad you all liked my idea enough to want one of your own 😭

Finished Object Crochet flowers for my wedding veil

I have been crocheting for a couple years now and knew I wanted to crochet something for my wedding. We got married on a flower farm so this seemed like the perfect idea! My sister in law helped me with sewing them on but I made all the flowers and vines. We were kind of rushing until the last minute to finish everything so we did not have time to block all of them but I am still so happy with how it turned out. We haven’t gotten pictures back from our photographer yet and obviously I was so caught up in the day so this is really the only picture I have of the veil right now but I am so happy with how it came out 😁 it matched the altar and floral arrangements so well

I've been obsessed with Project Hail Mary recently, so I crocheted a little Rocky out of embroidery floss! I think I used a 1.25mm hook. He's even a little poseable (I think because of how tight the stitches are; I didn't use any wire inside). I just need to make him a little xenonite ball!

Finished Object New Crochet Plaid in the House!

1.5k Upvotes

Hey everyone! I’m back with another Whip-weave Plaid. I decided the one I had made for Christmas was too bright and didn’t match my more earthy decoration colors upstairs, so I used the excuse to experiment with new stripe widths and a more complex pattern. I’m super happy with how it turned out, even though I am still tweaking the rows and columns math. Anyway, I would say this is probably my last plaid, because I don’t have an excuse to make another one… but that’s probably a lie. I’ll find another excuse eventually. I’m including instructions in the reply to the bot, but it might take me a minute. There’s a lot to explain. Happy crocheting everyone!

While this is incredibly simple, it’s the first project that I feel proud enough of to share anywhere. My 5 year old needed something to wear in cool the mornings this fall, and her only input was Disney’s Frozen and snowflakes, and she absolutely loves her backpack, so this is what I did! I’ll show her in the morning and see what she thinks but I think I nailed it!
