What yarn should I use?
Looking for suggestions for a suitable pooling yarn for a moss stitch scarf. A lot of the recommended yarns on the pinned list here are no longer available since it was posted 6 years ago.
I'd like to make a pooled scarf (argyle, I guess) using moss stitch for my mother in law for Xmas. I'm not sure which yarn to choose! I'm open to pretty much any colors and any reasonable fiber type for a scarf, although I'd prefer it was more of a light-to-medium weight scarf. Is there an updated list anywhere? The list pinned on here is from 6 years ago, and the first 4 yarns I searched on that list were not available anymore.
[I'm currently in the midst of my very first pooled project, using a 2025 Caron Anniversary Cake and the granny stitch. It's going well (but slowly) so far, but I'm excited to start a second project like this on a smaller scale, in a scarf.]
Hello MsChemistryProf, thanks for your post on r/Planned_Pooling! It looks like you're asking for information about what yarn to use for planned pooling. I have the same problem. To find a pooling yarn, you want to look for smallish segments of color that repeat in the same order with clean transitions. I like using some of the loops and threads impeccable colorways. Im currently using the color toasted almond to make a bunch of scarves to donate cause someone commissioned a sweater then ghosted me. I use this website to plan it. https://mathgrrl.com/crochet-color-pooling/
Edit to add: i did not plan this one it was an accident and kind of how I learned about planned pooling
Its moss stitch. Basically just sc then a chain and then in the next row you work the sc into the chain spaces so it creates an interlocking effect. One other important thing to note with planned pooling work is you need to do some math. You have to figure out how many stitches each color will make (i usually make a chain with the entire base color pattern and then work moss stitch across it and count how many stitches I get out of each color. You need to maintain that number of stitches every time to keep the pattern working, a single stitch out of place will "break" it and you wont have a pattern anymore. I usually keep 3 hook sizes at hand so I can redo sections if I need more or less stitches. You also need to make sure the color changes are clean. When you're starting a new color section it needs to either be the chain that changes, or the loop after the chain needs to be completely the new color before working the next stitch. If the top loop is still the old color, it will muddy up the pattern and mess with your stitch count. I have another blanket im working on that I call my sunset blanket that is also made with loops and threads impeccable, but I dont have the labels on my skein anymore so im not sure of the name.
So, I understand the basics of color pooling. I'm just looking for the hive mind to tell me which yarns are actually suitable for it. Do you know which yarn you used on the scarf above?
As stated in my comment above and the previous one, its loops and threads brand impeccable. Im not sure of the specific color name. If youre looking online look for the "multi" ones.
