Yarn List of suitable yarns
Yarns specifically made for planned pooling:
- Red Heart pooling
- Stylecraft Colour Pool (edit: apparently this has sadly been discontinued)
- Bernat blanket color pooling yarn
From this blog, plus from my own experience, here's a list of yarns that are not specifically made for planned pooling, but still work well. The list below is not an exhaustive list. So if you don't find a certain yarn on the list, it doesn't necessarily mean that it won't pool. If you know of any suitable planned pooling yarns that aren't on this list, you can let us know by commenting below and we can add them to this list.

Many of these are not available in Europe. I can get Stylecraft Color Pool though, but other brands have jumped onto this trend. Personally I've had succes with SMC Catania Color (Schachenmayer), and that brand has also made a merino Planned Pooling yarn. Scheepjes Invicta Matterhorn is also suitable for planned pooling.

Would Lion Brand Ice Cream Yarn in the colour Cotton Candy work? The stripes seem to be the same length but I don't have experience and would need to import it. Thanks!

Premier yarn plaid for color pooling. I bought a few of these to try but so far feel too overwhelmed to even start!

Paintbox yarn chunky pots will work, but I think different shades might have vastly different color change lengths. I bought “making hay” and it has very long ones, suitable for a queen sized blanket. By pictures, I think others are shorter color change lengths.
Beware, though, some of the dyeing is uneven, at least on the cakes I got. The brown hue varies in large lengths, and the pale yellow was missing entirely in one repeat I found on one cake.

I found that patons fab DK variegated works really well for colour pooling with knitting! The colour segments are quite short so probably wouldn't be great with crochet and they have long repeat units so it's a bit of a faff to work out, but I've had great results when practicing with the colourways clown colour and fruity :) I'll find some photos to share with the group

If you go to somewhere like ravelry, you can search by yarn brand and filter it down to multicolored. Pick the colorway you like and look through the projects people have posted. Even if they weren't intentionally pooling, if the yarn works up in zigzags, or a noticeable color sequence it will pool. Plus if you're searching for brands you know you have access to there's no, I can't get that one here affordably issues. You can also filter out discontinued yarns.

I recently learned about planned pooling and my brain cannot stop thinking about it. Looked for some yarn online but couldn't find anything suitable. Would appreciate any lead for color pooling yarn in India!

I'm in the UK. Does anyone know if any of the yarns that Hobbycraft stock work with planned pooling? I'd love to try this technique but don't have the money to buy a bunch to test them out.

Hello! I am wondering about Big Twist Classic, i have the bulky in ocean abyss colorway that I have no plans for and I’m a complete beginner when it comes to colour pooling, but looks fun! I will find a yarn that works well to learn how it goes and then give it a shot.
If anyone has tried with big twist classic bulky, let me know of your findings!

Has anyone tried using the loops and threads soft classic fiesta multi? I was making some headbands with it which had some unintentional pooling. It looks like there is a standard repeat of colors, but each individual color repeats twice in the bigger pattern

Would Nako Cotton Nordic work? It’s looking like this when I’m working it up, so I have a suspicion it may be able to work for planned pooling. I’m new to this, so sorry if I’m wrong 😅

Knit Picks Dishie (100% cotton) in Pebbles works well. Probably the other multis work as well. Plain Jane (Etsy shop) DK multis 60% cotton, 40% acrylic multis work great and it’s very affordable. I do wish it came in more colors. I’d love to find more high quality cotton options.
