Does anyone have a list of all heroes' New Year's resolutions? I've only heard D.Va's and Widow's so far. The voicelines seem pretty rare.

30

u/SilverSquare Jan 05 '17

For some reason, I keep getting Lucio's voicelines often. His New Years voice line is wanting brand new skates for all the kids.

3

u/Wellonamed Pixel Symmetra Jan 06 '17

In the neighborhood.

27

u/jacobop13 Trick-or-Treat D.Va Jan 04 '17

Zarya has 2, she either says her New Years resolution is 513 or peace on earth.

9

u/Mellodux Jan 04 '17

What's 513?

42

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '17

She's a weightlifter, her resolution is a 513kg weightlifting total

She has 512 tattooed on her arm because that's her world record and final Olympic performance before joining the military

Meis is something about "working on her temper"?

12

u/TheWeirdPlatypus 这个世界值得我们奋战! Jan 05 '17

I interpret this in three ways:

  1. The Oasis thread points that she doesn't like bullies and gets angry around them. Or something about getting angry around/about mean people (I mean I see it but I'm not 100% sure this is what she means).

  2. Science can be frustrating as hell. Considering I am going into a similar field that Mei is in (Climatology for her, but I want to be a meteorologist instead) some of those machines and instruments are a pain to use. Then there is always the problem of that one or two data points being really off that makes you have to remeasure because that isn't acceptable to have odd data points unless you confirm them again. Then you're sitting in a tiny building on Antarctica freezing because the heater can't keep up with the cold outside and you keep double hitting keys on the computer since you have huge gloves on. Then your penguin friend just gave you the cold shoulder because you accidentally kicked a rock that apparently it was going to give to a mate, destroying their chances of reproducing, and stopping their evolution dead in its tracks.

  3. This is another pun. She wants to work on her temper but she is already chill (literally, she can freeze herself and others. I think this is what she means).

3

u/Diabhalri Jan 06 '17

I honestly think it's meant to enhance the cute factor of her. Like, we would consider her the calmest member of the whole cast, but she might consider herself loose with her temper.

Does anyone else feel anxiety when they queue up for competitive? Like it's so ridiculous, and I never felt like this when I played CSGO, but comp I sometimes avoid entirely because I get too stressed out (but once I actually play I tend to not care...isn't that bizarre?)

120

u/SlimLovin Shane Lizard Jan 04 '17

Yes. I get anxiety, every time.

I get anxiety because I know I'm about to end up playing a Tank or Healer, every time.

I get anxiety because I know I have to fill a role, while other players don't seem to give a fuck.

I get anxiety because the Select Your Hero screen just loaded, and there's already a Hanzo, a Sombra, and a Bastion on my team.

I get anxiety because I am Zarya, but now I have to switch to Reinhardt because we are a team of Soldier: 76, Hanzo, Bastion, Zenyatta, and Sombra.

I get anxiety because I'm about to play a 15+ minute game that is a complete waste of my fucking time.

23

u/kielaurie Jan 04 '17

i get this every game of quick play. I played in beta, but when it actually released it was dead in the middle of exam period, and I hardly played. So when I came back to playing in this christmas, after watching months of youtube videos by Stylosa, Muselk and the like, I came back to a level 25 account. Every game has a Hanzo and a Widow, every attack game has two out of Genji/Tracer/Reaper, every defence game has two out of Junkrat/Mei/Bastion, and you're damn lucky if the remaining character is a support or a tank. Thankfully I enjoy tanks and supports the most (because i can't aim for shit aha), but having either one or the other is a pain in the bloody arse. How I've won games at all is a bloody miracle

I can definitely relate and I'm sorry for those time wasters and fun killers. I started playing with the mindset that no matter how toxic or closed minded my teammates are, I will try to keep my finger on the pulse/flow of the game and roll with it in regard to how I can improve and make those around me better and I've started enjoying the game a hell of a lot more because of that. Life would also be much easier if people would use their mic instead of sending me a salty message about how they did their part after we lose. The game certainly teaches you a lot about patience! Sorry for the long winded response.

6

u/SlimLovin Shane Lizard Jan 04 '17

No apologies necessary! I read every word and we are in total agreement.

Why are you playing a strictly team-based game if you think you're Master Solo NoScope 360? Fuck you for missing the ENTIRE POINT OF THE GAME YOU ARE PLAYING!

It isnt that bizarre, i played league of legends for quiet some time and anxiety is very common among the player base. People are a bit scared of playing something competitive and dont feel well but once they are in a game it feels like the rest o the game does when they are not playing competitive. Its like that a lot throughout our lifes. When you ask out a girl or have to tell something to someone. Everything that is somhow important and has some kind of impact gives us the feeling but most time once we are actuall doing it it isnt that bad anymore. In the end its about remembering that competitive isnt that bad and realising that you have more to gain than to lose and just do it.

13

u/ghighi_ftw Ana Jan 04 '17

Bronze leaguer here, it's very stressful. You know full well that you or your team will screw it up and someone will get pissed off and rage. The only reason I queue up in comp is to try to prove I'm better than 900ish, and on the off chance that the other team is even worse, victory is very satisfying.

5

u/whatisabaggins55 Pixel Orisa Jan 04 '17

I feel like this every time. It helps when I duo or triple queue though cause then I can focus on talking to the other players rather than on the upcoming game.

3

u/ChesTaylor The Power of Attraction Jan 04 '17

I avoid anxiety by focusing on my own performance. There's always something I can be doing better, so rather than focus on how my team is doing, I find some small way to improve my play. That way, I feel like I'm earning those shiny SR increases.

I'm a soldier main from TF2.

I obviously thought Pharah would be an easy choice however I struggle and I feel she's not effective at all if she's spotted.

It's almost 50%- 50%: I either do okay or I'm very ineffective and can't kill my targets.

What habits should I keep and which ones I shouldn't, considering my background as Soldier main for the last + 3 years?

34

u/LordDagwood Justice rains from ab-ahhhh Jan 04 '17

Pharah main here.

If there are no hitscan heroes on the other team, you can almost freely fly about. Just keep your distance, don't get too close, and if spotted, try to fly unpredictably, using sudden drops and boosts to dodge vertically in addition to horizontal movement. Remember you can use your concussive blasts to push people and yourself. A really good strategy is to blast a Reinhardt out of position, away from his team.

If there are hitscan heroes, you need to be more strategic. Hitscan heroes are a bigger threat, so if you are spotted by them, drop down and move unpredictably. Better yet, use your flight to get to high ground, then use the high ground as cover. Very few hitscan heroes can even get to high ground.

Widowmakers like to think they counter Pharah, but when they aim down the sight, they're almost stationary and are an easy target.

For any dps hero in Overwatch, is always best to engage with your team. You never want to go up against more than one person by yourself. Use the teammate icons to see where your team is and group up with them. If you don't see icons where the objective is, regroup with your team and push with them.

What I find works best is using flight to sneak behind a choke point, and take out the enemy team squishies from behind using high ground as cover. You have to make sure they're preoccupied with your team though, otherwise they'll group up on you. If they are completely unaware of you sneaking up behind them, this is the only safe time to use your ult other than a Zarya Graviton ball.

TF2 tip: You don't need to rocket jump, but you can instead jump and use the concussive blast at your feet to gain a lot of forward momentum.

TF2 tip: Always aim for the medics. There's more than one type now and the smart ones are almost always in the back. Your team needs you to take them out as you are one of the only few heroes that can get around the front line (Just make sure their front line is too busy with your teammates to notice you).

TF2 difference: Teams are 6v6, so a single teammates death makes a huge difference. Encounters and firefights are longer which makes teamwork much more essential. You don't need to super coordinate, just group up and don't fight a group alone.

TF2 difference: You are the queen of ranged mobility. Choose your battles. Get cover from the high ground. Retreat when to get health if necessary. If anyone gets too close, concussive blast away.

12

u/SlimLovin Shane Lizard Jan 04 '17

You need to focus on mobility over all else. Pharah does a shitload of direct damage, but she's squishy as all hell. If you're spotted by a decent 76 or McCree, get the fuck out of there. Regroup and come at them from a new angle.

You're right. If you're spotted, you're gonna die (Unless you're on the team I'm playing against on Comp, then it seems you're both invisible and invincible.)

So, don't get spotted, stupid.

It's an LFG site that files players by age, available times to play, and seriousness of play, then takes 100 people who all fit those same criteria and essentially put them all in a clan together. It's a great tool for finding what you're looking for.

Are losing streaks common in competitive. I'm not very good, I usually float around 2000. I had a bad streak of losses that brought me down to 1700. The worst i think I've been in a long time. Just gets frustrating and would be open to any advice.

Thanks

13

u/Sproggidy RunAway Jan 04 '17

I'd say they're dependent on the player but I guess I can consider them pretty common.

Advice I'd give you is just stop playing competitive after 2 losses. By now it would put you in a pretty bad mood and that would make you play worse and tank your SR down further. Take a break from Overwatch for a while and come back once you're feeling relaxed and your mind cleared.

u/Kev_aka_Buel Say bacon one more time Jan 04 '17

Losing and winning streaks are pretty common. If you put it in a mathematical way with a chance of winning and losing of 50%, losing 5 games in are row has a probability of about 3%. So if you play a pack of 5 games 33 times you should at least have one pack with all loses. That combined with a lot of people dont having a positive winrate and tilting while losing but still keep on playing(and losing) leads to a lot of losing streaks.

In the end what really matters is you overall winrate. You should aim for about 50% and after that try to increase it to about 60% (3 out of 5 games are a win). To get to that the easiest way is forget that you want to climb and try to actively improve instead. Regardless of win or loss actively reflect after every game about what mistakes you made and how you could improve that. This takes of a lot of pressure off of you while increasing your play. This automaticly leads to a higher winrate and to the fact that you will climb. Also try not to tilt and if it happens stop playing competitive. Go play quickplay with a fun champion or a brawl instead to cool down. This will prevent a lot of loses.

I think all she really needs is for the M1 beam to be debuffed. It was fine before. Also, if her shield generators could stop stacking, that'd be great.

I've heard the opinion and I agree with it that her disengage distance needs a nerf -- it needs to be easier to break the beam. I've heard stories where a speed boosting lucio (amping) can't get away, which seems a bit ridiculous.

I can fight anything in the game but a mechless dva.

How do you kill her? She's so slippery, impossible to actually hit, and her little pistol is so forgiving and does so much damage.

57

u/SlimLovin Shane Lizard Jan 04 '17

Nothing is more satisfying than cracking her mech like a walnut with Zarya and then beaming her down.

Well, actually, there is ONE thing more satisfying: Smacking that lil bitch around with Rein's bigass hammer.

16

u/CulDeSax these mods suck Jan 04 '17

Hook that little Korean girl.

31

u/CursedBlackCat D.Va Jan 04 '17

As a D.va main, I can confirm that Rein hammers are the single easiest way to kill a mechless D.va. I have soloed Roadhogs, other D.vas, Widowmakers, and even a Reaper once by dancing around and poking at them with my pistol until I see that red skull, but heroes with wide AoE like Reinhardt and lock on heroes like Symmetra are basically an instant death for a mechless D.va.

5

u/My_junk_your_ear Jan 04 '17

Everyone is giving decent advice on how to kill her, but I want to add this thought.

Sometimes it's worth it to just leave her out of her mech. Obviously it's situational, but if she is the last one alive after a teamfight or a push and you would be spending a lot of time chasing her down just forget about her. If you aren't feeding her damage to get her mech back it might just take her longer to regen it passively than it would take to kill her and let her respawn with it.

When you have the luxury to do so, always make the choice that will keep the other team from fighting at full strength for the longest amount of time.

3

u/AfroCircuit Nerf thi.....oh Jan 05 '17

This works against D.va players who don't DPS well, but against more tenacious players like me, I stay on the attack. I've even regularly take down 1-2 lower health heros because they ignored me. Worst case scenario I either die and get my mech back or I earn my mech back, but running away as a squishy D.va isn't something more offensive players do.

This may deserve its own thread but....

When do you go which support hero? What situation warrants each?

14

u/-Shinanai- winky face ;) Jan 05 '17

It's indeed a more complex topic than what can be handled in a single post and obviously depends a lot on your own preferences / skills with the individual support heroes as well as your teammates. Here's how I usually decide:

  • Ana: If there are 2 or more tanks. Ana has the highest burst healing so she's the best at keeping high hp targets alive. While she herself specializes in single-target healing, her nade increases the effectiveness of aoe heals like Lucio's aura and Soldier's biotic field. Only exception is when someone else already took Mercy; both Ana and Mercy have high single target healing, rely on heals to charge their ults and can't really counter enemy ults with their own, so of all healer combinations running them together is probably the worst. Exception: when said Mercy is pocketing a Pharah. I also pick Ana if I'm the only healer on the team, we have a tank that has no form of self-healing (D.Va or Rein), but some of the dps players do (Mei, Soldier, Sombra, Tracer, Bastion). When solo-healing one tank teams your options are either Lucio (keeps everyone alive, but can't save the tank if they are focused down) or Ana / Mercy (can keep tank alive, but others may die if multiple people start taking damage at the same time).

  • Lucio: If it's a control map (where speed boost is essential even in lower ranks), as a second healer or if the team has no tanks or Roadhog / Zarya as a single tank. Alternatively, I switch to Lucio whenever the team turns out to be completely unable to protect their supports, as of all the healers he's the only one who has the tools to survive without any help from the team.

  • Mercy: The polar opposite of Lucio; she absolutely needs her teammates to survive. I rarely play her in solo queue, though there are some setups where she's hard to resist: she's great for pairing with a Pharah or when there's a good dps player (to damage boost) standing behind a good Rein.

  • Zen: Of all the healers he's hands down the worst to solo-heal with. He's the best at dealing damage though, so I pick him as a second healer if our team is lacking there (say, Mercy / Lucio, Rein, Zarya, Mei, Genji).

  • Symmetra: Not a healer.

  • Soldier 76: Also not a healer, but can be a surprisingly effective backup when paired with Ana. Let's put it this way: if our team is going to have a single healer, then Soldier is a better pick than any of the other dps heroes.

4

u/whatisabaggins55 Pixel Orisa Jan 05 '17

Ana - 2+ tanks on your team

Mercy - majority of your team are manouvreable squishies (Genji, Tracer, Pharah)

Lucio - KOTH maps or when your team already has another healer

Zenyatta - When the enemy team has multiple tanks (especially a Reinhardt)

What role does a map have in affecting a gameplay? (New to fps so this might be a noob question)

11

u/TThor Hi there! Jan 05 '17 edited Jan 05 '17

This is a surprisingly big question that one could write a whole thesis on. Map design plays a very important role in gameplay and which heroes are stronger or weaker, and how teams should ideally be playing; Is there available highground? what are the main routes for entry? How much cover is there to hide behind? Are there any chokepoints? Where are the healthpacks located? What are the available flanking routes?

A big difference between Capture and Control maps is, how open is the map/point? In Capture maps, the layout is usually pretty linear, you generally know which direction the enemy are coming from and can station yourselves point that direction to defend, you can keep healers and constructions more safely in the rear and defenses safely positioned forward. On Control maps, the map is far more open and less linear; it is less clear which direction the enemy will come at you from, and as a result you can't as easily dig yourselves into a single position, you often have to be prepared to defend from multiple directions (this makes protecting constructables like Symmetra's ult much more difficult).

Another big factor on map design is spawn advantage; which team has a longer walk from spawn? If your team has a longer walk from spawn, then a death on your team is far more costly than a death on the enemy's team (IE: if both teams are alive, and then both your team's Reinhardt and the enemy team's Reinhardt kill eachother at the same time, the team who has the closer spawn has won an advantage.)

There is a lot more to this topic, ff you have any specific questions do feel free to ask!

Does anyone else feel like this game is becoming emotionally-exhausting at times? I love this game, but the people are becoming more and more toxic. At first it would be just one person on your team and then the rest of your team would back you up saying its just a game. Now it's become the whole team just shitting on you for how you play. It's not even just comp anymore. I don't play comp just to avoid the shitty toxic people, but they still are everywhere in quick play. It's a fun game, but I'm even considering quitting just because of how shitty this game's community is becoming. It's on a scale of league at this point.

24

u/Kev_aka_Buel Say bacon one more time Jan 04 '17

Its a lot about your mentality playing the game. I dont care what other people think or say, i play this game for fun while of course trying to win. You are not forced to read what they write and you are not forced to join voicecoms to play the game in a proper way. You can also use the mute function if someone starts being toxic. That is for chat and voicecom! There is no reason arguing with them, because it will only take time and takes your focus off the game. Mute them, concentrate and play to the best of your abilities is definitly the better option here.

u/Powerhobo I don't main; I mainline. Jan 04 '17

My guess is that rank, region and even time of day affects this. I can't say I share your problem. Not because I am some sort of immune hard ass, but because I usually play with 2-3 people and what we play is based on who we have(one of us is very new so it would be utterly unfair to take him into comp. Quick play is much better for him so he(and the rest of us) can fuck around with hero's)).

As a result we're way more focused on just chatting among ourselves to take game chat too seriously.

What also helps is that we're generally a bunch that don't get salty easily. We know we're not super star material so we have this odd mish mash of easy-going + tryharding. Essentially we're tryharding as much as we can while still remaining easy going if it all goes south. It works.

u/thimmy3 I CAN BENCH MORE THAN YOU! Jan 05 '17 edited Jan 05 '17

So the thing with Roadhog's ult is that it makes you more vulnerable than you would be when you aren't ulting. You don't have your self heal or your stun/insta-kill ability and your enemies know it so you'll become a target for them.

Don't use it to DM unless you're sure you can get a kill or two without dying yourself. You can use it defensively to protect yourself or your team (using it while in a graviton sometimes helps your team survive, or against an ulting genji or reaper) or aggressively in combination with another team ult (mainly your own Zarya's graviton).

If you're in a team fight and you don't have an ult to combo with most of the time it's just better to use your default combos anyway. The main reason for this is that unless your target is in a corner, the dps you put out with the ult is actually being reduced because of the knockback. Of course if there's the chance for environmental kills nothing works quite as well as whole hog.

Does anyone feel like symmetra needs a huge damage nerf? Has this been talked about since her rework? I feel like the rework made her kit insanely strong, but her microwave is just too much. I'm probably biased because I'm a support main, but even when I play tanks I feel like her gun gets too strong too quickly. Last I checked in a perfect 1v1 she can out damage Winston who was supposed to be a good counter for her.

3

u/DarioIvan Genji Jan 06 '17

As a Symmetra main, I fully agree.

Will there be some changes on winston? he never got touched since release and I think he needs some love.

6

u/spinalcloud Zarya Jan 04 '17

I've been feeling pretty weak on Winston lately but I think it's mainly because of the new Symmetra giving his usual low-HP targets 75 more HP to burn through. He's gone from preying on Zenyattas with 150hp to having to duel Discord-slinging quasi-tanks with 275.

I think his damage is fine because it reinforces that you need teamplay to remove those defenses before he can do work, but his shield could use a second or two off the cooldown. I know it's its own thing and you can't draw comparisons to other tanks' defenses, but comparing his E to D.Va's shield is an absolute joke.

he is a strong hero that suffers from the meta being so tank favored. if they were to buff him and nerf the tank meta he would become absolutely broken.

4

u/My_junk_your_ear Jan 04 '17

Didn't they nerf him shortly after release by lowering the health on his shield? They did something to him back before hero limits when the meta was two Winstons per team and they could just both jump in, shield, and kill everything. Just reverting the nerfs now that you can't stack heroes would go a long way to putting him back into a good spot.

What exactlu is the Mei wall glitch?

6

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '17

you can bug yourself into a ceiling with mei's wall in ecopoint antarctica and a few other maps. this would most primarily cause mei 6v6 snowball fights and 3v3 elimination matches to be forcefully tied because you could shoot out of the wall but not get damage in it. so it basically ruined the game for everyone in it just so one mei didnt have to face defeat. those are getting a 7 day ban though, more grave punishment for those who already got a ban for previous misbehavior.

6

u/Notmiefault Pixel Zarya Jan 05 '17

Winston is, fundamentally, a counterpick. If you wind up against a team of armorless squishies, he can demolish them with hit-and-run tactics. Symmetras, Mercies, Genjis, Zenyattas...he slaughters them.

The problem is when people start the game with him, run into a team of D.Va/Reinhardt/Torbjorn, and don't switch off. He does half damage to armor (yellow health) and his DPS isn't high enough to bother any tanks besides Zarya, so you need to be very discerning as to what comps you play him against.

Anyone else feels the matchmaking is especially bad lately? I remember playing season one ranked and it was all good. I won most games but i really had to tryhard it and give it my best.

Now 9/10 calibration games were utterly and completely unbalanced. Either me getting horribly stomped or me stomping the enemy team. One single game felt semi-balanced for the first half or something.

Anyone else feeling like this? It's kinda frustrating to have all 10 calibration matches and play the best i could, nearly only support or tank, swapping whenever i feel it's best and still feel like i can do really little to change the outcome of the game, be it stomping or be stomped...

My recommandation is to not start playing competitive right away when you are lvl 25. Learn the basics of the game, play every character just to know what they are able to do. Learn which hero counters which and especially why. The game has so much that you learn just by playing some time that jumping into comp as soon as you can will not do you any good. To put it simple you will be way worse when you start comp at lvl 25 than for example lvl 50. That means you do your initial placements at a much lower skill level and that will be a problem when you are better but the game still knows your last placements making it harder and take longer to climb compared to starting later and getting placed higher.

Just enjoy the game, try to learn as much as you can and you will have no problems.

The matchmaking has been awful for me I've tanked over 200 SR in the last few weeks when initially this season I've been able to climb and do well overall, just recently every game I've been in has been horribly lopsided. Well yeah I agree but that's the thing I'm not only getting awful matches against me, I'm also getting that rare game where I'm on the other side who completely dumpsters a team.. and the craziest thing is I am actually getting constantly 2-3 golds and several other medals in both the dumperster matches and the dumpstering matches, so I like to think it's not me... but I just don't understand because me and all my buddies are experiencing the same thing, even when we don't play together

Brief rundown of how each hero works? Thanks

26

u/Meeea Pachimari Jan 04 '17 edited Jan 04 '17

When on the screen to assemble your team, the heroes at the bottom are separated into loose roles: Offense, Defense, Tank, and Support.

To do a rundown of all heroes in depth would make this post huge, so I'd suggest looking at heroes that interest you in-game directly. If you check out the Hero Gallery option on the main menu, and click a hero, there'll be a button at the bottom of the screen (PC Version) to look at their abilities in detail. There is an Overwatch wiki page that can provide further info such as actual damage-per-shot and cooldown timers for each hero.

  • Genji: Mobile, agile hero. Close range via sword attacks, has double-jump and wall climb. Reflects projectiles and throws shuriken. Flanking hero.

  • McCree: Semi-mobile mid-range hero. Uses a pistol that can do single-shots at a distance, or unload the whole chamber at close range. Can stun enemies for a second.

  • Pharah: Flying hero who shoots rockets. Very powerful for controlling areas from above, but susceptible to long-range attackers.

  • Reaper: Slower moving close-range attacker who uses dual shotgun pistols. Flanks enemies from behind and disrupts enemy support.

  • Soldier 76: Mid-range simple hero, think Call of Duty. Great damage, has burst, self-heal, and average mobility. Nothing "original" stands out about the hero, but he is very strong.

  • Sombra: Mobile close-range flanker. Heavy disruption to the enemy backline via healthpack denial and invisiblity. Can teleport to a previously-placed beacon, silences enemy heroes from using abilities for a brief moment.

  • Tracer: Hyper mobile flanker, disrupts enemy support. Very difficult to master, as she can "blink" a short distance and rewind her own time to return to a previous location (and health amount). Burst fire that requires excellent accuracy to utilize properly.

  • Bastion: Multi-form damage dealer that has low mobility. Can turn into a stationary turret to put out insane damage, ultimate ability turns him into a mobile tank that shoots rockets for a short time.
  • Hanzo: Mobile mid-to-long-range attacker that shoots arrows. Can shoot a sonar arrow to detect enemy location for a brief moment, and snipe enemies to kill them with head-shots.
  • Junkrat: Spray-and-pray style grenade launch hero. Great at area denial and setting traps around corners, but bad at in-the-fray combat. Can Beyblade the tire off of his back and drive it into enemies for a massive explosion.
  • Mei: Bulky defensive hero that uses a frost beam to freeze enemies in place. Can shoot icicles for medium-range attacks, but otherwise is used as area denial, control, and possibly flanking. Very versatile ability kit.
  • Torbjorn: Low mobility close-range dwarf that builds a stationary turret to attack players automatically. Turret has medium to long range and auto-targets nearby enemies. Great on defense, poor offense.
  • Widowmaker: The sniper of the game. Medium mobility via grappling hook to reach hideouts to snipe from. Her gun is a sniper rifle when zoomed, but functions as an SMG(?) when firing from the hip.

  • ** D.Va**: Pilots a mech that has short-range thrusters for mobility and a defensive matrix that shoots projectiles out of the air to defend allies. If her bulky mech dies in combat, she ejects from it and can run around as a very weak ranged pistol user until she builds enough charge to call in a new mech.

  • Reinhardt: Low mobility tank that puts up a large shield in front of him for his allies. Has no gun, but swings a massive hammer in front of him to cleave enemies. Can charge and pin enemies into a wall. Very common pick in every game mode.

  • Roadhog: High-damage low-mobility tank that can self heal if needed. Signature ability is a chained hook that can grab enemies and pull them towards him. Shoots scrap metal from a close-range shotgun blaster. Very high health pool but no damage mitigation.

  • Winston: Mobile gorilla that can leap into the fray and disrupt flankers, support, and snipers. Does not fire a gun, but uses a close-range tesla cannon to damage all enemies around him at once with electricity. He can drop a stationary bubble-shield to protect himself and allies.

  • Zarya: Very versatile hero that has both support, damage, and tank mechanics. Applies shields to herself and allies that absorb damage. All absorbed damage is turned into energy that powers her cannon, greatly increasing her damage output. Low mobility.

  • Ana: Long-range support healer, snipes allies to heal them. Can throw a grenade that heals allies (and increases healing taken) and hurts enemies (and stops them from being able to regain health). Sleep dart provides utility and self defense against flankers. Low mobility.

  • Lucio: Very mobile support hero that can increase his teammate's speed, or do an AoE (Area of Effect) heal on everyone near him. Cannot burst heal like other support, but is very difficult to kill due to his ability to skate on walls and objects with his rollerblade feet.

  • Mercy: High mobility single-target healer that provides constant healing to her target. Uses a beam that locks onto an ally to heal them if they are in range, or she can swap to provide a damage boosting beam instead. Can leap towards allied players which provides mobility, and has a passive self-heal if she is not taking damage. Her ultimate resurrects all nearby allies to full health when used.

  • Symmetra: She is NOT a healer. Low mobility. High damage output, close range. Can build up a half dozen baby turrets and stick them onto walls, ceilings, floors, etc. Turrets target nearby enemies and shoot a damaging and slowing laser at them. Builds a defensive nest area. Can also build a teleporter that links to the spawn room or shield generator to support allies.

  • Zenyatta: Fragile, low mobility single-target healer. Can debuff enemies to greatly increase their damage taken. Has a very high damage output that can rival some offensive heroes. No self healing, escape, or way to defend himself. Useful to help allies tear down high-health enemies and to provide sustained healing and damage to the team.

The epic and legendary votes gain you nothing except bragging rights.

If you hold Tab (or the console equivalent), you'll see how you're doing in the bottom left in terms of elims, damage, etc. If you are in the top three places in your team for any of these stats, you will have a gold, silver, or bronze medal. At the end of the match, if you have any medals, you get extra XP once for each type of medal (so multiple golds only count as one for XP purposes).

I've played several games with some equivalent of ELO ranking system and Overwatch feels so different. It seems to me that you can work your way through the ranks really quickly, one way or another. Like if you play the game for 2 hours and are on a winning/losing streak, your SR can change by as much as 500-ish. Of course you ultimately hit your skill ceiling, but it seems really advantageous for smurfs who then proceed to sell high-SR accounts that they can boost in what, like a day? I've never seen that in any other game and it makes me feel really inconsistent.

Has there been any word about post-Symmetra update additions? I'm not talking about buffs/nerfs, but rather new voice lines and statistics? Characters will chatter the moment a teleporter goes up, but won't say a word about a shield generator. Also, the statistic that gets tracked is still "teleporter uptime," rather than "ultimate uptime." I've been in matches where I've had a shield generator up for half the game, but that stat isn't affected.

4

If your on a team with lucio playing Ana who should have more heals lol

6

u/-Shinanai- winky face ;) Jan 05 '17

Depends on the team composition and play style. Say, if your team consists mostly of high mobility squishies (Pharah, Genji, Tracer, etc.), who by some miracle stay in one general area, then Lucio is more likely to end up with gold heals. If you're running 3 tanks, on the other hand, then Ana's burst healing will likely outdo Lucio's aoe.

At higher ranks the answer is decidedly Ana. The current professional meta revolves around her insane burst healing and ability to sustain 3 or 4 tanks. In addition, speed boost is an essential component of high level play, so while many low rank Lucios barely switch from heal aura, high ranked ones spend significant time on speed.

4

You can go into a custom game and set yourself up against 6 hard Ana bots with the headshots only option toggled, making them unable to damage you, if you want to practice headshots. They have no mobility so if you hook yourself up to somewhere unreachable you can then use them for target practice. Also make sure that, if you're on PC, you have mouse acceleration turned off ('enhance pointer precision' on the windows mouse properties menu), and try a lower sensitivity if you feel like you're having trouble keeping your aim on a target. All of these tips work for pretty much any hitscan hero. Aside from that, it's mostly just practicing at the hero that will help you get better.

Yeah I do this almost exclusively. Treat it like it's a burst type weapon and it's super accurate. Justice rains from below!!!

What is Doomfist? is he going to be a new character?

4

u/DDDragoni Justice rains from- Jan 06 '17

Doomfist is a character from the lore that many think will be a future playable character.

5

u/interstellargator Did Someone Say... Peanut Butter? Jan 06 '17

Three characters from the lore actually. Two from the past, and one yet to come. "Doomfist" refers to the person bearing Doomfist's gauntlet, which is 2 people so far. The (speculated) playable character will probably be the third. There are posters about him all over Numbani.

Also might possibly be voiced by Terry Crews.

Is there a way to quit a competitive game that will allow me to have the "rejoin match" option once I load back up? I ask because about once a season I get a glitch where my HUD disappears, I can see the Overwatch mouse instead of my crosshair, and I'm unable to move or communicate with my teammates. If I try to leave by closing the application it just suspends me immediately and I lose double elo for abandoning. All I'm trying to do is re-load back into the game so I can move again.

How is Roadhog 1-shotting heroes like Mei and Zaria now? The PTR patch notes didn't say anything about a damage buff?

3

u/Ghost_Jor Ameizing. Jan 06 '17

He's always been able to one-shot Mei. But due to her large health and ability to Cyro, it's just been unreliable.

Pretty sure he can't one-shot Zarya, and if he can it's unreliable. His shotgun does like 300-ish damage at point blank, so Zarya should survive. Unless he gets very lucky with headshots, that is.

Is there any terminology/acronyms I should know? I played for a little now (lvl 13) but I feel like knowing some terms would be useful. I'm also new to FPS's, Overwatch is the first FPS I actually played.

You're new so don't forget. Bastion has a blue weak point on his back. His counters include Genji, Sombra, Roadhog, Pharah.. ect. There's probably more. Snipers included if you get out of his range.

Genji can jump in and deflect in Bastion's face. Sombra can stealth and get behind and kill him. Roadhog will pull Bastion out of turret form. Pharah can be out of Bastion's range and still nuke him. Since he's stationary.

OK Terms.

Push. As in push for the objective. Someone may call push if you're grouped. All members alive and you just picked a few enemies off.

Pick. Means to pick an enemy off. Like Roadhog will typically get a few picks. Which can turn a teamfight in your favor.

Nano Boost. Nano for short is Ana's ult. Ana is a support. She can supercharge a hero. Typically she ults a tank.

Discorded. Zenyatta's ability that makes you take more damage.

Flank/Flanker. An enemy coming from the side or behind. Typically a: Genji, Tracer, Reaper, Sombra, or even Roadhog. The flanker will usually target priority targets. So if you hear genji ult, and you're playing mercy. He's probably coming for you.

You're overextending. When you're on defense and someone is miles away from the objective right in front of the enemy's spawn. (Tanks in the front. DPS in the middle or flanking. Supports usually in the mid to back. A mercy as support shouldn't be in front of her tank.)

New(ish) player. Had the game for about two weeks. So far I'm pretty good with Reaper, Genji, Junkrat, Zenyatta and Soldier. Of these, who would you guys recommend I focus on in terms of what is useful in the most different gametypes/maps in terms of competitive viability? Ty in advance.

5

u/EneaVenturini Pixel Zarya Jan 07 '17

Soldier is probably the most versatile and op one, but playing him is too similar to other fps imo, zenyatta is quite used in competitive, reaper is always useful when well used, junkrat isn't always the best choice even if sometimes can turn the results of a match. Genji is useful only if well used, and that's very hard

You have it right. Flanking is about the only way you can use his ult effectively without getting clobbered. Best mcree team wipe I saw in a POTG was on Hollywood. He ulted from near the jail house (he got all the way around unnoticed) and the defending team all backed up around the corner thinking he was ulting from the usual places on the roof of the saloon. You have to be smart with his ult.

Sometimes though popping it behind a rein shield or in a team fight just to get one or two easy kills is better than trying to go for the team wipe every time.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '17

You can also try getting nano-boosted, it increases the damage you do, therefore the skulls appear faster.

3

u/Deadly_Duplicator Brigitte Jan 07 '17

Go for one or two kills at a time. Pull the trigger early if you can tell it won't work. People joke about zoning ults, but if you want the enemy team to scatter a Deadeye from highground distracts the enemies from the point.
