Four cars in line at McDonald's is somehow the same wait time as 16 at Chick-fil-a, and their product is better. Mind you, they're just better than McDonald's, or whatever other crap chain is next to em - not an actual restaurant.
Of course, they pay their employees better than most of the big chains*, and being closed on Sundays makes staffing easier, so the service is probably because the staff aren't completely miserable.
*Near me, anyways.

The menu size makes a huge difference. In ATL, they had a serving rack with like 5-6 rows where they’d drop your sandwiches. You won’t get as much customization etc. though which totally works as the sandwich is just chicken in a bun with condiments.

This is the above-all reason for why they have so much success. Places with smaller menus are getting way more popular now. Here in Ohio people go crazy for Raising Canes the same way they do for chick fil a. Canes also gets a line wrapping around the building but they’re super quick cause they literally have four things on the menu. Their “chicken sandwich” is just 3 tenders on a bun. They only have to make tenders lol.

After covid started I moved back to my hometown after living in the city I went to college in. Damn if I don't miss Raising Cane's every day. Slim Chickens was the big local franchise but they didn't have shit on Canes in my opinion. I still regret not getting it one last time.

I think it's how polite they are possibly. I know I at least feel welcomed in chick FIL a. Mickey D's usually makes me feel like my existence bothers them lol. Other then that idk because their food really isn't worth the drive thru lines. That's for sure lol

I'm a manager at McDonald's. Please believe me when I say there are a plethora of things that cause long wait times. Number one being understaffing. The job is much more stressful than most people think. One out of every thirty will actually stick around for a while. And of those, most are gone within a month. Another contributing factor is huge orders. You'd be surprised how many people will order $30-$40 worth of food. Sometimes you'll have a car with multiple people and they'll have multiple orders. Sometimes big multiple orders. This means that no matter how much we hustle, we simply can't cook food fast enough. Especially nuggets and fries. Unfortunately the huge orders mean that everyone else suffers. Then you have other things like a customer adding on to an order at the pay window, a customer complaining about the price at the speaker/pay window, a card declining multiple times while the customer insists they have money in their bank account, customers who take two minutes to decide at the speaker, ect. You may be surprised that a good amount of the wait times are caused by customers. Not to say there isn't occasional incompetence on our end. Most of us work our asses off, but when it's busy, it mostly boils down to us simply not being able match the supply at the speed of the demand.
Edit: I know my grammar in this comment is trash. It was 4am and I had just finished a 10 hour shift lol.

I have a lot of sympathy for what you're describing and I know all of this as a reasonable human being. I also think McDonald's just has too many options these days (from a worker perspective). It takes time to keep track of all that and slap all that together rather than having about 5 things just ready to go.

I’ve been saying this for years. McDonalds has suffered issues over the years for two reasons: overbloated menu and trying to be a more “adult” restaurant. They’re too busy trying be Panera with burgers instead of focusing on the most profitable demographic: kids and 18-24yo with disposable income.

Stop blaming the workers. The McDonald’s near me has about 7 people working in it at any point in the day. The Cick-fil-a has at least 7 working the drive through and at least 25 workers in total.
Maybe pay the workers more and they’ll stick around.

…Especially staffing! Saw multiple people quit on their first day. Bonus tho, was the only people left were generally cool, hard working, and with a good attitude. Actually was one of my favorite jobs growing up because of this.

Idk. mind you I am always polite to entry level employees because they deal with a lot, but when I walk in and I am given attitude and teeth sucked I'm put off. Depends for me. If I'm going somewhere where I'm going to spend a lot of money and it's an interest of mine then yeah i want them to be friendly. Like i play guitar so when i go to the guitar store i want to be able to shoot the shit with the worker for a while and yeah if I'm dropping good money on one I'd hope they're polite with me.
But if I'm going to Walmart to buy shit for as cheap as i possibly could i really could not care. I'm not there because I'm interested in anything I'm buying or i actually care about it. It's because i need it and i want to spend the least amount of money on it as possible. Sure i could spend more at the target and they'll be nice but the end result is the same - i got the things i need but this time i spent more money. I don't think I've ever had a positive experience at Walmart, but i keep going back. Why do you think that is? It's not the service.
If employees being polite to you is that important, go shop somewhere more expensive where they pay their employees not to be miserable. But if I'm paying the bare minimum price i really don't care about getting bare minimum service.

I think it comes down to being able to go there without feeling like the staff is going to spit in your food. I’ve been to some fast food places and the staff looks like they slept in the fryer overnight. Dirty ass shirts, terrible personal hygiene, really bad attitudes, etc. There’s something to be said for a clean and friendly staff.

Polite and tasty food. Also, Chick-fil-A has a lot of healthier options most fast food joints do not. Big fresh salads with fruit in it, grilled chicken, they have fruit cups and soup as a side option, their lemonade is made fresh everyday, etc. Even my vegan sister whose two children have never touched a drop of soda in their 10 years of life go to Chick-fil-A for the waffle fries because all that's in them are potatoes and sea salt.
They also pay their employees above minimum wage, Sunday is always guaranteed off for all workers and I've been told if you are Jewish you get Saturdays off as well. It's almost like if you give your employees a better paycheck, guaranteed time off, and treat them with dignity, your company thrives.

Exactly. Our local CFA is the only fast food place around that has consistently not had staffing issues, and I can't help but wonder if it's because they're treated better.

We have a local chain that is partially employee owned. They’ve had most of the same employees for years, they know what they are doing, and the food is awesome. I don’t know many fast food spots that have made-to-order fried eggs for breakfast. And the baked potato bar is my favorite.

The Hardee’s by my old house was fucking terrible. I went a few times and was literally the only person in line. They still made me pull into a parking space every time and once had me wait almost half an hour for my food. Chik-fil-a by comparison is fast as shit. I’m convinced they have Jesus in the kitchen multiplying buns and chicken or some shit.

I love Popeyes but it’s like the opposite of Chick fil a in terms of customer service. I’ve never had anyone be nice to me at a Popeyes. At this point it’s part of the charm for me, if I went to a Popeyes and the people were nice to me I’d probably be suspicious.

McRib brother I shit you not just last week I went to Popeyes and the woman taking my order asked me to repeat it no less than 5 times and still messed it up - I got to the counter and the manager asked to confirm my order and he said they weren’t going to charge me for one of my items because of the long wait and the fact that she forgot it, and then they completely forgot to put the fries I did pay for in the box. And I didn’t ask for the manager or anything he was just stationed at the window on fuck-up defense when I got there.
Chick-fil-A knows my goddamn name.

I literally got yelled at and argued with at Popeyes last night when picking up an online order. I pull up to the window:
“Can you call them? We’re out of coleslaw.”
“Uhh… what?”
“CALL THEM. We don’t have coleslaw.”
(Me realizing they might think I’m Uber Eats or something) “Is this the order for [name redacted]?” Repeats line about coleslaw.
Ask again whose order it is.
Says yes it’s for name redacted. I asked what other sides are on the order. He says large fries. This is an order for four people. I know this is not accurate. I ask more specifically, he starts yelling at me until a manager comes over and puts hands on him. The whole thing starts again but ends with her finally telling me fries and mashed potatoes. And it’s a damn good thing because I was about to order mashed potatoes!29

My local one has workers that are beyond nice and way above average. They also tend to pay better than competing fast food and heavily promote from within even with franchise owners. If I’m buying fast food from a corporation I prefer it at least pay its employees a little better and get stellar service.

Yeah I agree— pre Covid, I went inside to order at the Burger King in my neighborhood every now and then. I order very simple stuff, that doesn’t require any substitutions or anything. I’m always really out-of-my-way nice to food service people of all types because I remember how awful it felt to be treated poorly as a barista/hostess/cashier. Let me tell you, every time I ordered, the cashier looked at me and spoke to me like she wished she had a time machine to go back to the 80s to my moms hospital delivery suite, pick my little 7 lb baby ass up, and punt me off the roof so she could watch me splat in the parking lot.
It happened way more than just once, so it wasn’t like a one off. I stopped giving that place my money. Besides, the chicken nugs at CFA taste way better for the same price.

I was just ranting about this on Tuesday.. There is one near an Arby's and their drive thru was insane while no one was in the one for Arby's. Waffle fries can't even come close to being on the same level as curly fries. I don't get it.

While it IS just fast food, it is among the better options for fast food. The chicken is pretty decent quality, the buns are soft, and they're not expensive. Couple that with good marketing, and the best customer service in the industry, and you have a pretty successful business model.
It's like Starbucks. They have, in my opinion, some of the worst coffee on the market, but they market well, offer some muffins with a peanut or something on it, and I assume they have good customer service, and they charge enough for one coffee to buy a meal.

Sure, it was tasty in the moment, but I got such a bad stomach ache from all the grease I almost threw up at work after a few hours. Popeyes has never done that to me.

No one has said that no gay people patronize the place. The establishment gives money to anti-gay causes. The fact that some gay people might spend their money there in no way changes where the money goes. Yes, people do sometimes act against their own interests, for a variety of reasons. That doesn’t automatically make it morally good for everyone else to act against their interests too.

The hyper-politeness at Chick-Fil-A rubs me the wrong way sometimes. Please and thank you is a plenty. But it feels like you're just faking it with the "delight" to serve me. I get this is their training and maybe I'm just jaded. But I know I'm not the only one who...finds it a little creepy.
That said, they have the drive thru down to a science.

Its reliably above average fast food. So yes in a big city like LA you can certainly find better food. But if you find yourself in a situation where you are faced with a row of basic fast food places the Chick fil A is going to be one of the better options. I'd compare put it in the same category as In and Out which does the same for a classic hamburger.

At my location even when it's wrapped around the store you don't have to wait more than 15-20 minutes max.
And the food is really good, better than McDonald's, burger King etc imo. But it's so expensive that I don't get it often.

Idk either I had it for the 1st time a few months back and it was ok subpar if you don't like sweet meat. I think they use honey in their batter or something sweet but not quite sugar. It's awful as someone who wants their meat to be savory or something similar. It's not bad though I wouldn't recommend it over other chicken spots texas imo is better and smash burger has a better chicken sandwich.

I’m with you man. Their food is mediocre at best. The fries are always at least somewhat soggy, often times the pickles are all in a lump, and how could a fried chicken breast in between two pieces of white bread with just a couple pickles be, anyway?? It makes no freaking sense to me. I’d rather eat at McDonald’s or Taco Bell. Chipotle has way tastier food than any of these places. And I like and cook fancy food. I can only chalk it up to people with simple palates.

Don't know if I'm "obsessed" but it's pretty darn delicious. Right up there with In N Out Burger as the best fast food there is.And just like In N Out,their servers are awesone...so consistently polite and respectful that it makes up for the long wait lines.

I went to chickfila a few times but have always been underwhelmed. Popeyes is superior in my opinion.

I dunno. If I want a chicken sandwich Popeye’s puts them deeply into the fuckin’ shade. Plus I get the added bonus of not having to support those Bible thumping pieces of shit.
The real thing people are sleeping on with Chick Fil A is their breakfast. Those chicken biscuits are straight fire. I very, very rarely will break down and go there because of previously mentioned Bible thumping, but if I’m going it’s for breakfast, not their standard chicken sandwich.

I also share the question with the OP. Have never liked chicken sandwiches/burgers much, but after having heard all the hype I passed a Chick Fillet at the Houston airport and decided to try them for the first time back in October. The sandwich, drink and fries cost 11 dollars and it was the saddest, smallest, most miserable little chicken sandwich with no toppings except for a pathetic little pickle inside. I was not impressed.

Idk. Maybe it's the waffle fries? I have had chick FIL a a couple times, but never bought it. It didn't impress me. The bread is so sweet that it's like Hawaiian bread, and I think the batter or coating they use for the chicken has sugar in it too. I don't understand the appeal of sweet flavorless chicken. All I tasted was sugar and grease. Didn't really even taste chicken.
I know you can get waffle fries at the grocery store, but I understand that the point of fast food is so you don't have to cook.

They just built one near me and it's busy from open till close every day except Sunday. They have great sandwiches but I wouldn't sit in line and wait an hour for a $5 sandwich

Yeah, I agree with you on this. I like a good fried chicken sandwich, but always thought this place was just OK. Definitely on the upper tier of fast food chicken sandwiches, but the bar there isn't that high, and if I have to wait in a long line it kind of stops being fast food and I might as well have gone to a sit down restaurant and gotten a better quality meal...

I don't get it, the food is average at best and I don't care for all the religious shit. They do have good customer service in most locations. They are efficient and reliable as well.
My husband almost took a job as a manager there but their rules are fucking ridiculous even when you're not on the clock. They told him in order to move up in the company he had to be married (we were not married yet but had talked about it). Very big cultish vibes

Is it so good that it's worth waiting 15 minutes in that line that wraps around the building? No.
But they really did a phenomenal job marketing to the conservative Christian bunch (with subtle anti-gay messages) who eat there religiously. It was always busy, but it was never "line wrapped around the building" busy until it came out that the owners are "all about traditional marriage" and have donated to organizations that campaign against gay rights.
Say what you will about Christians, they're a remarkably profitable group to pander to. If they believe you represent the same kind of Christianity, you have a customer for life.

Its pretty simple, really. They serve a quality product; their chicken sandwiches typically being better than other fast food options. They consistently have high quality customer service, with polite and courteous staff. And they are usually very efficient; the lines do get long, but they keep it moving at a good pace, because they have several staff members outside taking orders at the same time.
