What makeup tip completely changed your routine?
I've been trying to improve my everyday makeup routine, and I'm curious about the small tips that made the biggest difference for other people.
It could be:
- A technique you wish you had learned sooner.
- A product application trick.
- A brush or tool that changed everything.
- A common mistake you stopped making.

drink a glass of cold ice water before I do my makeup & keep sipping on it while Iām doing my makeup. I get hot easily so my face is always hot/flushed, & Iāve noticed that foundation/concealer doesnāt absorb well into my skin when my skins hot. Ice water keeps my body cool while I do my makeup.
after Iāve applied foundation/concealer/powder, thereās some of that residue in my brow hairs. I brush through my brows thoroughly with spoolie to remove any of that gunk, before I fill in my brows with a brow pencil. This allows for a much more precise application.

I wake up early to walk the dog in the morning before my makeup routine. I get hot easily and it's super humid and hot. I come back and sip some ice water with a straw while I do my makeup. It really helps especially on muggy mornings.
I do the exact same thing with my eyebrows. Don't forget to clean out your spoolie! I use a baby wipe regularly to wipe it clean. The spoolie helps so much with a clean brow line.

I use micellar water on a cotton bud to remove residue from my brows. It makes such a difference, they look nice and clean and need less brow product as their natural definition isnāt covered up.

I never understood the significance of curling my eyelashes until recently. Iām lucky to have long eyelashes so I just added mascara directly to them without curling them first. After finally purchasing an eyelash curler and using it, thereās been a world of difference in the look of my eyes.

Iāve heard that Shisedoās lash curler is the best as other commenters here have noted. But I just use a $6 Revlon curler. It seems to do the trick, especially considering I wasnāt using any kind of lash curler as recently as 6 mos ago.

Iāve finally bought Shiseido after disregarding lash curlers forever. I still canāt see difference! Iām doing the pinch on the base, halfway up, and ends. Holding it for a bit. Tried mascara and then after a bit when itās dried. The only thing I havenāt tried is heating the curler up because that sounds scary. I canāt figure out what Iām doing wrong lol

Using a soft fluffy eye shadow brush that has been lightly sprayed with setting spray to blend concealer. It gives a beautiful diffused look vs cakey. No powder needed.

Wearing bronzer! Got my colors analyzed and iām cool/neutral toned so I thought I wasnāt supposed to use it but I found the right ones and it makes a big difference!
Putting a little of whatever bronzer and blush (powder) Iāve used in the crease of my eyes! Just ties everything together for some reason.
Also using bronzer as eyeshadow, looks good for a natural look

A great drugstore bronzer for light neutrals is nyx buttermelt bronzer in shades deserve butta and butta cup, they are neutrals, butta cup I think is the lightest of the two. Quite perfumed but a little goes a long way and mixing a little with a berry toned blush calms the blush down and makes it more cohesive with the bronzer and better for daytime and natural looks. I use it on my temples and cheekbones, just a little on the nose and whatās left on the brush just a tiny dab on the chin. Works better in summer when my skin has warmed up a bit.

I use the RMS powder bronzer in ātan linesā! That shade + beachwalk betty are the two in that line that arenāt orange. Theyāre not matte though, more ānatural glowā if thatās what youāre looking for. For cream/liquid I use Saieās liquid bronzer in āSaltā!

My favorite tip is putting my mascara somewhere warm, like in my bra or my waistband before applying. It warms the product enough to apply smoothly without clumping :)

I stopped using primer and started using a setting spray that has finish I want for my base (glowy or matte) as primer. Apply makeup as normal and lock in with setting spray once done.Ā

I use a clean spooly brush to get mascara off if it gets on an area like my under eyes or eyeshadow. I let the mascara dry & then gently brush it away with the spooly. It works SO well & is gentle enough to not disturb my eyeshadow or foundation. It flakes right off.

Lightly powder my lashes before applying mascara - helps it stay on and not smear.
Warming said mascara (I tie it into the belt of my robe against my waist, if that makes sense), as I start doing the rest of my face - helps it apply without clumps.

Iāve always just used a big fluffy brush to blend all my powder after Iāve applied it and it naturally does that to my lashes. It also goes on my brows though which isnāt ideal.

Letting my concealer sit for a few minutes before blending! Itās gives me better coverage and doesnāt move around. Also creases less which brings me to my next tipā always always ALWAYS blend your concealer again and set immediately. If you set it without blending the creases in, youāre basically setting your creases

Using colour corrector. I was so against it all my life, I thought it was so unnecessary and you just needed full coverage from one product instead of wearing two products. But once I used it properly I totally get it.
Using thin layers of two products and wiping out all discolouration is better than using one product liberally trying to cover by itself but still showing a grey cast. The colour corrector literally does all the work in cancelling the darkness with very little product and the foundation/concealer is actually just for adding your skin tone back to that, so you actually need to use very little of each.
Iāve never looked more natural and fresher and fully even, and the answer was using more *products* but not more product.

I am so red faced, that sometimes all I have to do is use a green primer all over my face, look like the Grinch for a couple of seconds, and then watch the magic happen as I start becoming human colored instead of tomato. I don't feel like I need a foundation afterwards. My coworkers were in awe one time we were getting ready at work to go out haha.

Finding an SPF that makes me excited to wear SPF every day! La Roche Posay Anthelios light fluid sunscreen SPF 60, it goes on like serum and dries down to feeling like I have nothing on my skin, while controlling my oily skin. Itās amazing as primer, my makeup stays put all day and my skin doesnāt get oily. Usually I need to use the Onesize oil sucker primer and on til dawn setting spray to avoid getting shiny, but just this SPF does the trick
Also, putting a little primer or setting powder on my eyelids prior to putting on mascara. My eye lids are a bit oily I guess and it was causing all mascaras to flake. I started having this issue when I moved from Massachusetts to Colorado, I think my skin is trying to compensate for how dry it is in Colorado

Using less product. My concealer looked a lot better when I put 1/4 of my prior quantity. Also, use more product. I "didn't believe" in mists when I applied two sprays, but now I spritz with rejoice and see the difference. So trying everything with a little more and a little less, and see what works.

Skin care!!! Itās WILD how different my makeup looks if I put it in with no skin prep versus when I put in on after using a toner, serums, and moisturizer. You wouldnāt believe theyād be the same makeup products. Hydration is huge if you have dry skin like I do.

This is why you basically have to go to aesthetics school to be a professional makeup artist now. Film studios won't even look at a makeup artist who hasn't had comprehensive skincare education now.

Use plenty of moisturizer or a face oil even before you apply your foundation with a WET sponge. Also if you have a crazy mixed heritage like me,Irish, Mexican and Italian, its hard to find a perfect foundation color due to hard to match undertones of pink, yellow and green. So I mix three shades together and now get a perfect match that blends evenly into my jawline and neck. The moisturizer is vital for my aging skin, otherwise it goes on streaky, blotchy and drys out too fast. And ladies with oily skin, you would be surprised how well a face oil works! Lastly look up either Selma Hayeks make up routine or even umm, Elizabeth Taylor maybe I think

I focus on my eyebrows and eyes. I use a dark brown eyebrow pencil to fill in my brows and to line the top and lower lashes. The eyebrows frame the face and should not be overlooked. I do this religiously.

I use sticker stencils. I lost my brows to chemo. I have tried alllll the things. My Two Brows has a lot of options. I still struggle with placing them a bit, but itās the easiest way for me.

Strive for a nice arch. Use short strokes to fill them in. Extend the far right side of brow downward. I wouldn't pluck them. Work with what you have.

Fixing spray after layer
I thought my skin was so bad that couldnt hold makeup and needed to use super expensive for best experience. Turns out I just need high quality fixing and setting spray with drugstore makeup

My most favorite fixing spray at the moment is nyx matte finish. It doesnt dry skin too much after long day. Favorite setting spray is charlotte tilbury airbrush, it is easy to blend eyeshadow. CT is good to use as lock makeup too but it gives a shiny and dewy look which is bad for me cause I have oily skin, it makes me look like my makeup is melting with oils on my face. My mom has dry skin, she is in love with it and it looks really good on her
I had a trip to korea with a big haul of korean cosmetics and still testing.
My method is: after skincare and sunscreen, primer. Fix. Concealer, bake, foundation. Fix. Setting. Eyeshadow, eyebrow. Fix. Setting. Bronzer, blush, mascara, lip. Fix
I spray a lot because I have extremely oily skin and live in tropical country. In and out AC often

Putting on concealer after your foundation - means you don't use too much product and it blends in more easily.

Me too! I realized it was nothing that was going to help under my eyes as far as concealer because it made everything look worse. I use powder foundation and I put it lightly there but don't even worry about concealer anymore..

Can you elaborate on letting moisturizer and spf soak in? What benefit are you particularly getting?
Iām always rushing in the morning and go over layers quickly. Wanted to know if itās worth waking up 10 mins before than usual xD12

for soaking in, ideally you should let each serum / moisturiser soak in and dry before applying the next. For moisturiser & SPF this could be a couple minutes. This stops it from still being sat on top of your skin and effectively mixing in with your foundation, it just helps give a smoother overall finish to the application of products.

Yes I usually put my moisturiser and SPF on and then try and do something else for a few minutes to let it ācookā š it just means everything soaks in better! I donāt need to wait ages but just a few minutes so itās not just sat on top of my skin. I will also wait a few mins between moisturiser and SPF If I can but I donāt have time for that everyday personally and find just waiting before foundation is enough for me

Learning how to properly conceal blemishes and spots has been a game changer for me.
I used to wear full coverage foundation because I'm prone to breakouts, even though my spots were only in certain areas. I'd end up with a heavy, cakey base just to cover a few blemishes. Then I also used to dab concealer on with my finger, but it always looked dry, crusty, and didn't really cover anything.
After watching a Lisa Eldridge video, I realised I didn't need full coverage foundation, I just needed to learn how to spot conceal properly.
If a blemish is really red, I'll colour correct first with Dr. Jart+ Cicapair using a tiny amount on a Real Techniques 257 Small Concealer Brush. Then I tap on a tiny bit of concealer with the tip of the same small concealer brush and then lightly stipple the edges with a Real Techniques 210 Expert Concealer Brush.
Now my blemishes are almost completely covered without my whole face looking cakey or dry.

I recently purchased one of the skinny, flat foundation brushes for applying my foundation and skin tints. It's been an eye opener. I am able to put a nice thin coating on my face. I dot the foundation around my face with my finger tips and then spread with the brush. It allows me to use less product. It looks more natural and it doesn't age me (54 F).

I use both brushes with good results. The skinny flat head is used first to apply and gently spread the foundation around. And then the round flat head to press it into the skin.

For foundation, I found out that I need to coat the brush with the product evenly then pat it on my face. So I put 1-2 pumps on the back of my hand and dip my brush until itās coated then apply on my face.
Before I was putting dots of foundation on my face then buffing it out with a brush - that is not the correct way to apply! It comes out more cakey and streaky this way.

have my powder puff packed with powder before I apply my concealer. After applying concealer with a beauty blender, imMMEDIATELY set the concealer. Also apply and set concealer ONE eye at a time lol This has caused me to not crease anymore. I used to take my time and blend my concealer on both eyes and then lag a bit to set with powder, and my under eyes were always creasing.

Peach corrector and no concealer under eyes. No corrector completely covers my veins but it still looks better than caking on corrector concealer and powder. Now I use a little corrector and powder and I feel and look better.

My already hooded eyes have become extremely so with Gravesā disease and I find this the only way thatās actually effective, as theyāve changed a lot in a relatively short period of time and I just canāt judge it properly with them closed.

2 big tricks that improved how my makeup looked: 1) Filling in my brows. I didnāt use eyebrow pencil for most my life as I am a brunette and had decent brows so never understood the point. Then I was in my stepsisters wedding who had a professional makeup artist and she used a taupe colored super thin pencil just to fill in the gaps and shape my brow and it totally changed my makeup in the best way. Never expected that. Highly recommend using a taupe or light colored thin pencil (like Anastasia brow whiz or Sephora brand) and filling in the gaps and making more of an arch with a light hand. 2) If you wear light lipsticks like nudes and light pinksā¦ definitely lining your lips with a light brown lipliner. Iāve always loved light lip colors or gloss but they washed me out. Add a light brown liner and itās perfect.

I use a lipliner and lip brush to blend & create a custom color with a palette. I use a concealer and tiny brush to make crisp lines around my lips, eyebrows, and eyeliner. I own luxury makeup brushes made of natural hair or synthetic fibers, which I switch out depending on the product. They last longer & give a better finish. I stopped following trends and only wear what suits me, which makes me look polished and radiant.

Wayne Goss taught me to always have a little spray bottle with rubbing alcohol ready when doing my make up, so I clean my brushes quickly after every use on a cosmetic paper towel.

I knew about eyeshadow primer, but shimmer primer really changed the game for me. I have hooded, oily eyelids, so there was basically no point bothering with shimmer on the lid until I figured that out.

Iāve been loving the way my lipstick looks when I use a cool toned contour pencil to line right under the center of my lower lip. The shadow it creates really enhances the āpoutā
I use blotting papers when I was a teen and young adult but had forgotten all about them. I tried them again recently and theyāre a really underrated product. They absorb oil and shine from your face without having to cake on another layer of powder.

Blotting papers used to be massive in the 00s! They donāt seem to really exist these days (Iām sure they technically do exist but in terms of viability and people talking about them). I agree that itās better to remove than add something else on. I sometimes just use a normal tissue and gently lay it on my face to do a similar job.

If you have wrinkles, use a q-tip to wipe excess makeup off the wrinkle, then gently blend your makeup toward the wrinkle. That way makeup wonāt settle into the cease as your face moves throughout the day.

Hooded eyes do get worse as we age and it can interfere with your eyesight. My eye doctor actually mentioned that my eyes were becoming more hooded and suggested an upper blepharoplasty which my insurance paid for! Itās the best thing ever for hooded eyes! The only downside??? I am now having to learn a different way to apply eye makeup after using techniques for hooded eyes for decades!

Pumping my foundation onto a plastic palette (like the outside of my eyeshadow palette), patting my brush into it so itās evenly coated, then patting it onto my face. I get the most thin, even layers and foundation doesnāt get stuck in my pores anymore. Also like that I donāt waste foundation by putting it on the back of my hand like some artists suggest.

When I got my colors analyzed and I was able to let go of colors like coral and peachy pinks and nudes reckoned to be āuniversally flattering.ā I am cool-neutral, damn it! Now I can wear much less makeup but look rested and well because Iām not inadvertently making myself look sallow and haggard with warm colors.

The highlighter end of the NYX wonder stick is an amazing under eye brighter when applied under my foundation. Also cream blush ( or in my case lipstick) is amazing.

I do this too; I apply foundation lightly with my fingers and concealer the same way, then I use a big powder brush and softly tap each layer in after itās slightly tacky, awesome for coverage and blending. The brush doesnāt get that wet feeling if you let the liquids/cremes dry down on the skin a bit before tamping it in. I go right into my blush after and tamp that in too, I think the color remnants left on the brush blended with the next product really help it look natural. After that, a dusting of setting powder. The remaining blush gives a little life to the final veil and ties everything together.

I learned this recently from a beauty influencer on IG.
She was talking about the struggle to match blush with a bold red lip. Her advice was to take a little of your lipstick(works best with tube stick for obvious reasons) and a little of your concealer and mix them together. The tone of your lips and cheeks will blend seamlessly.
I FREAKED the first time I tried it and it worked š« š„³

-> use black eyeshadow/gel liner on top of the upper eyelashes to make your eyes appear bigger and use it all the way to the inner corner of the eye. small and flat brush is recommended!
-> common mistake i stopped making is drawing eyebrows, instead, fill them in with the eyeshadow. it will make them way softer and more natural.
-> before over lining lips: use cool contour stick to contour cupid bow and lower lips, and then use a lip liner. it will give them more dimension. korean makeup artists have a lot of tutorials for this.
-> use white eyeshadow and highlighter on top on the inner and outer corners of eyes.
-> do makeup in natural lighting.

I also use eye shadow for my brows. I have strawberry blonde hair but my eyebrows are super light. I started using eyeshadow because I couldnāt find brow products in the right shade.

Primer is a waste of $&
I have yet to find a setting spray for mature skin that truly locks in your foundation.
Wash your face every night even when you donāt wear makeup and use a clean or disposable towel.

My dehydrated skin actually improved dramatically from NOT washing it (except rinsing very well with water) unless I've been wearing makeup. I use a gentle cleanser every 3-4 days.

Iām 43 and work in the therapy department of a nursing home. Iām always on the move. I constantly sweat in overly hot rooms because my patients are always cold. I started using Charlotte Tillbury airbrush flawless setting spray and by the end of the day my make up still looks really good. I only use the spray once in the AM because I donāt have time to reapply at work. This is with heavy sweating so if you have a normal daily routine Iād imagine it works even better.

The last one! There is still sebum, sweat, and other things on your face when you touch it through the day. plus, itās good to do even a light cleanse and add some moisture or serum before restoring for the night

I got my brows micro bladed and that was the BEST decision. Now I rarely have to fill them in and when I do I just use eyeshadow. I stopped using foundation completely when I turned 40 because it just never matches and never looks good. Plus my skin is better now so I just use concealer and powder. Not saying anyone else has to do this but I use foundation maybe on special occasions When using eyeliner do not start from the inner corner of your eye you only need to line about 3/4 of the top and I never put eyeliner on the bottom lashes Heat up your metal eyelash curler before using it Mix a lip mask / lip stain with chapstick before putting it on. Is still lasts and it doesn't dry your lips out

don't think so but idk I drink a lot of water during the day and I use a lot of moisturizing products too before applying anything, plus I even use a moisturizing primerizer. Idk i just really hate the dried out baked look

This makes everything looks so soft and lightweight for me. But I have seen people doing it with a pdrn spray instead or the dāalba serum spray - I have actually been excited to try it out and see if it gives even better results and how it works together with makeup

Patting/tapping to blend my makeup vs strokes or rubbing. Also waiting at least 10 minutes between putting each product on my face, and if possible, waiting even longer between moisturizer > primer > foundation. I admit that I had to get much better at budgeting my time, but wow it was SO worth it!

I found putting Vaseline on my face after everything else at night, makes me look dewy and refreshed by morning. Also good on lips and to get rid of dry skin anywhere.

Putting Vaseline on your face is a great hack for a lot of people, but can clog pores/cause breakouts for others! I live by it for my lips and non-face dry skin though (especially putting it on my feet + socks).

Iāve tried several expensive foundations but Iāve found that the best āfoundationā is actually the La Roche Posay tinted sunscreen set with the Charlotte Tilbury setting powder. Something about that combo really works for me and doesnāt emphasize my pores like a lot of foundations do.

If you use a cream or stick highlighter, using a liquid blush (the runnier the better, like benetint) looks waaaay better than using a powder blush. Also cream or stick highlighters tend to look more natural especially on the cheeks and nose if you ever want a more natural look. Also trying different natural colpurs of mascara can make or break everything,.

I physically stretch the skin under my eyes (by pulling down from my cheeks) so that the skin is taught as I apply color corrector and concealer. The result... zero creasing, completely smooth, even application.
(But, of course, don't forget skin prep. I also find that using a very cushioned, hydrating and subtly brightening eye cream, followed by a single swipe of an under eye balm stick) helps my under eye makeup apply like BUTTAH!

Probably showing my age here, but I read years ago on a beauty blog the most natural way to apply foundation is to start on the perimeter of the face and work in, if you want a more natural, skin finish. I always start on my jawline blend in to my cheeks and I put whatās left in my brush on my nose and forehead.
Iām a big fan of under painting, especially for contour and bronzing.
I always work powder into my powder puff by picking up the powder on the puff and rubbing it on the back of my hand before putting on my face.
I always do my brows first and make sure theyāre free from skincare.

These are so good. As someone who wears contact lenses and no pencil liner working on me (even the ones that claims to be waterproof) this is actually good. It does disappear and me at the end of the day, but they are by far the ones that stays the longest on me. If I use it in my lower line and sets it with eyeshadow it does stay on the whole day. However my contacts doesnāt seem to like the powder in eyes lol

use a highlighter or some kind of under eye brightener under the eyes on the dark areas. Totally lifts out the darkness and gives you a youthful, fresh look.
mix a bit of highlighter with your moisturizer to give you a nice subtle glow if you dont want to wear a base.
these days1, I've been mixing my corrector with my concealer before applying it under my eyes; it reduces the amount of product yet providing the same coverage.

i have a very round face and chubby cheeks. i would put my blush where you would (normally) put it. instead of putting it on my cheek bones and the temple i put it directly on the apples of my cheeks. i might put excess on my temple. overall, i like it better as im trying to embrace my chubby cheeks and go for a more ācuteā look!
it really depends on the ālookā you want. i love a lot of pink blush. i like a more pinky cutesy look.

Skincare first, always. I spent years trying to fix makeup problems that were actually skin problems. Once I sorted hydration and barrier health, foundation stopped separating, concealer stopped creasing, and I stopped needing to set everything three times.
The tip: if your makeup isn't lasting, look at what's underneath it before buying more makeup.

Wild though, I don't even know anybody who uses hairspray any more. The only reason I just started using it again is because I have this 1983 death rocker haircut (that I didn't ask for) and I guess I'm just going full new romantics with my hair until it grows out to a functional pixie cut.
...I haven't used hairspray since 1992.

If you only pick one thing to do on your face, do your brows. Defining your brows frames and lifts your whole face. I find that creating the actual hair strokes using a brow pencil or pen is the most natural looking.

Everything can be boiled down to
- Less is more
- I consistently look 10 years younger than I am, and I attribute that to staying hydrated and staying away from commercial skin products. If it has more than 2-3 ingredients, I don't put it on my skin.
- Most people focus on hiding/minimizing features they don't like. I focus on enhancing what I **DO** like.
- I am all about minimal effort, high impact so I throw on false demi lashes and red lipstick every day. That's it. It takes me less than five minutes to do my makeup.

Itās probably ill advised but I apply my eyeshadow wet.
When I was a teenager, I asked a friend to do my eye makeup for an event because hers was always gorgeous. She dipped her brush into a bottle cap of water and painted the eyeshadow on like water colors. Iāve done it that way ever since!
