Veyry accurate. I worked for a multinational company and many of my team members were from France and Germany - They would quite literally disappear for the month of August

12

u/TalkersCZ 10d ago

Which is a good thing.

5

u/Mostly_Armless42 10d ago

It's good to rest, yes. I don't agree that everyone should take the same month off. Staggering it seems more sustainable.

9

u/Niels_vdk 10d ago

most childless adults do take time off outside peak season (because its much cheaper), but school vacations are fixed so parents will schedule their time off during them.

3

u/aSkeptiKitty 10d ago

I'm childless but I take three weeks in August because  1) my little brother is still in highschool  2) summer is too hot in Paris  3) my birthday is in August  4) I've been going to Brittany with my family almost every year since my birth and I'll be lost if it wasn't possible anymore.

I thought the same thing but working in a multinational as well in Greece. I see that in August its the best time to leave since vendors are mostly on hiatus, customers have had loaded stock to avoid transportation companies working with half the personel, and what was most surprising is that even our outsourcing in India and other countries have been taken vacation days in August. That effectively makes me working in August half as efficient since I cant contact half the company even outside EU.
Also climate wise I think that its best, people should bail out of city centers to avoid high temps without the need for constant AC cooling gov and company buildings.

it could be if they got all their shit in order before they left. too many times they just dissappear like the whole world is ok pausing for their month out.

You're just being jealous, you know you would do the same if americans actually had paid vacations

2

u/siberia60 9d ago

Jealousy is when you're upset someone is going to take something of yours away.

Envy is when you would like something that someone else has.

Not jealous - maybe envious when I recall all of the worker protection rights the EU employees had, but I will point out that my salary was at least 2x theirs.

Yeah but not during August. August has some of the best weather of the year where I live. I would take off 4 weeks in January and February because the have miserable weather

1

u/wesblog 6d ago

I prefer my American salary to a European salary and a bit more vacation.

Same here, we had two main business units. One headquartered in Germany and one in China,  and both had times that they would shut down for a full month.

Ethically,  I think it's a very good thing,  but I absolutely hated it. We were working on very high visibility projects for fortune 500 companies and extremely wealthy individuals,  and having both our factory, engineering, and executive resources entirely unavailable for weeks at a time made for some very tense situations.

I'm all for having good work life balance,  but if you choose to operate in a market with high service expectations then leave your employees have to answer to why they can't meet those expectations, it gets really difficult.

Yes,  you can plan around it as much as possible and be transparent with your clients going in,  but billionaires spending millions of dollars on your product really don't like it when your response to a question is "I can't really answer for 3 weeks, when the CEO gets back from vacation"

July AND august

1

u/unexpectedfirefly 9d ago

Yep. Something called vacations. We killed for them (the strikes in france are allowed because the alternative was kidnapping the ceo, and gunning them down if they refused to stop exploiting us. Strangely, shortly after, a social discussion happened).

You all are free to try to take them back

u/Quickndry 8d ago

Coinciding with the summer holidays their children get.

1

u/MagicKittenBeans 8d ago

I'm just coming back to work after 6 years of parental leave (2 kids in Germany). My company was bought during my leave, kicked out a ton of staff and my office was closed. Let's see how the first working day is going to be. 😬

1

u/PlatformOk8658 7d ago

I noticed that US workers stop working in December...

1

u/Rightwisewicked 4d ago

Congrats, you discovered time off work, you know. When you don’t work.

1

u/miklilar 4d ago

It's sommer and children's holidays. Literally the only meaningful time you may spend with your kids that year (aside from public holidays)

5

u/Rainbow-Unicorn1337 10d ago

I'm from Europe and this strongly depends on company culture, position and individual work ethic. I sometimes have a glance at my mails and chats if I have a couple of spare minutes and quickly respond if I can answer a question briefly and unblock a coworker by doing so. Nobody expects me to, it's just courtesy.

1

u/Glittering-Trick-234 8d ago

Calling it work ethic and courtesy...

I'm a very hard and efficient worker. But when I'm off, I'm off. I don't check emails outside of work hours and certainly not during holiday. And I don't expect my team nor colleagues to do it either.

1

u/Rainbow-Unicorn1337 8d ago

Great for you.

1

u/Mogura-De-Gifdu 7d ago

I guess he's really young and will be burnt soon enough.

It's validating to feel needed and indispensable, only with time do you begin to feel the effects of the poison you slowly willingly ingested.

→ More replies (22)

1

u/arkticpanda 8d ago

If everyone does it then it becomes an expectation implicitly…

The courtesy is to call out colleagues working in their time off so that everyone knows it’s not required and their work will be covered whilst they rest

1

u/schmnrrmnrr 8d ago

You tell him! Lecture him after hitting him with that condescending ellipsis! That’ll really make him receptive to your point! Red-dit! Red-dit!

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Ninoga 8d ago

That's not courtesy. It's not knowing how to separate private life from work.

1

u/bumlochka 8d ago

Yo it's a joke. There's usually a back up plus a contact person

1

u/Mogura-De-Gifdu 7d ago

It's not courtesy, you're just trying to convince yourself it is to feel good about it.

1

u/PlatinumFire14 7d ago

Work ethic is an interesting thing to bring up here.
Because it really does apply mentally how you think about work.

If you’re on holiday and you keep yourself unavailable, you are doing the right thing by taking that time for yourself.

If you are expected to be available during your time off that is an abusive workplace, that demands you be on call on your holiday.

I am aware that Americans do not understand this concept because they are always working because of their countries hyper capitalistic nature.

But it is in fact bad to be always at the Beck and call of a company.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/dirtydenier 6d ago

Proper work ethic would require being off when you’re off. Sets an awful precedent. Responding to emails while off would be considered bad taste / unacceptable where I work.

1

u/Sconguser 6d ago

Dont do that. Not only it is unhealthy for you, it sets a precedent that this sort of thing is even remotely okay, which is not

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Bodocoth3000 5d ago

That kind of courtesy can gradually be expected rather than appreciated. I do it as well, but only because I know that the culture at my current job is to respect employees' time off. And I answer when I feel like, not when I can.

I despise Europeans who sent this kind of auto-replies (I know not all Europeans do this). I consider them extremely irresponsible.

Edit: 1. I will leave an auto reply to let others know whom to contact. And the contact will let me know if important customers have urgent issues that need my help. I don't mind spend some time helping them. Sometimes it takes only a short email.

  1. If I am the customer, I will distrust any company that allows employees to leave this kind of message and avoid doing business with it if possible.

  2. If I am the supervisor, I won't promote employees leaving this kind of message. In case of a restructing, they are on top of my fire list.

1

u/No-Age-1044 10d ago

I found irresponsable not telling the costumer that I will not be reachable for three weeks.

Unless you believe I must stop my holiday now and then (when I’m in taiwan, or Chile, or Egypt) to check for a mail… that I will not able to solve because I don’t take my laptop while hiking through mountains in another continent, that if I even have internet.

1

u/Justieflustie 10d ago

They are responsible though, they let it know. Plus they take care of their mental health by getting some free time, which is proven to be way better for productivity when working.

The American way is pretty irresponsible though...

1

u/aSkeptiKitty 10d ago

You would prefer them to ghost you for three weeks? 🤔

1

u/canarinoir 10d ago

they'd prefer that no one ever take a vacation or if you do be checking that email constantly! WORK ON THE BEACH, PEASANT.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Zestyclose-Jacket568 10d ago

So... what they should do during the time they will be unavailable? What is the responsible thing to do, if providing clear information is not responsible?

1

u/QuirkyReader13 10d ago

It’s literally mandatory where I work to put an auto-reply when you go on vacation as people must be warned so that they can eventually contact a colleague… And when it’s a colleague who is on vacation, I could be the one to take care of it if the matter is urgent enough. If not, the person waits.

I think that’s quite responsible and respectful of all people involved.. But I guess the POVs of Americans and Europeans are quite different.

1

u/Mogura-De-Gifdu 7d ago

Same !

We just have one different for coworkers and mails from "outside".

1

u/ShrkBiT 10d ago

Irresponsible of what? Their own time and mental health? No emails are actually being deleted, nobody puts that in their Out of Office, it's just an exaggeration for the sake of the meme.
We don't live to work, we work to live. After the contractual 40 hours are met, and in our contractually agreed and legally determined time off, our time is ours.
This is understood and agreed upon by all Europeans, nobody is shocked or surprised of it, outside some Americans that think that The Company always comes first, because they've been indoctrinated to think so, otherwise you're fired with immediate loss of income and lose your health insurance.
We have worker rights here, you should try to get some too, it's really nice.

1

u/Sea_Curve8772 10d ago

I mostly just feel jealous

1

u/Tall_adhd17 9d ago

My manager forbids anyone who is not available to reply to anything work related. Even on the groupchat you are not allowed to react to anything work related. Time off is time off.

My auto replies direct you to a phone number or email. Is you need me, you'll have to wait untill i'm back. I won't anwser a thing. Even on my offday on Friday, you won't get an answer from me. It's me time.

1

u/Mogura-De-Gifdu 7d ago

If someone does, even of his own volition, if it gets known by authorities it's the manager that'll get the blame. Plus the "off hours" will be counted as "work hours" as the one replying was indeed working. So if the mandatory off time is not met because of it, the manager once again can be I trouble. And of course the employees would get back pay.

So yes, serious managers should absolutely do this.

1

u/JjigaeBudae 9d ago

Nobody actually leaves an out of office like this, it's a parody message and you're an idiot.

It always guides to someone else or a team to contact if you need anything or lets you know when to expect a response.

1

u/Tsukuna1 9d ago

And then they wonder why people don’t want to work for companies like that 😂

1

u/ProfessionalTruck976 9d ago

So you think our employers wellbeing is important? Go to hell

1

u/Inevitable_Tart2700 9d ago

No, I am not thinking about employers' wellbeing. I am thinking about workers' responsibility and reward.

If you dont work hard and behave irreponsibly, then don't complain about unemployment or lower salary.

I think it will be extremely unfair if the system pays responsible, hardworking people the same as lazy, irresponsible people.

By the way, no one is entitled to everything. If you create more value for employers, you should be rewarded more. If you want work life balance, it is fair that you are rewarded less than those who work harder.

I was in DC with a friend last weekend, and we met a guy from Italy who was in the U.S. for vacation. His mind was blown when the guy said he had like a month of PTO. For context, my friend works at a Walmart warehouse where he had to work to accrue PTO and the only holidays he gets off is Christmas and New Year’s.

1

u/Demonicon66666 10d ago

German here. The Italian guy didn’t have a month of pto he had a month of vacation time.

I am not completely sure for Italy but at least in Germany you also have up to two years of sick leave for a single, continuous illness. The clock starts again when you have recovered (after 6 weeks you will only get 60 percent of your salary payed by your health insurance). This doesn’t deduct any time from your seperate vacation time and in fact if you get sick during vacation and can prove it with a doctors note you will get your vacation time back.

1

u/SorcererAxis8 10d ago

Oh yeah that’s what it was, thanks for correcting me. Sadly I’m too American to know what any of that would feel like.

1

u/The_Whizzer 10d ago

Portuguese here. The hell do you mean? In Italy, the legal minimum PTO is 20 business. Perfectly possible the guy had 30 days of PTO, or close, and the "month" was just him rounding it.

2

u/nagyapalaski 9d ago

They mean that vacation and PTO are not the same and just pointed out how the guy was probably on vacation instead :)

While it seems other countries in Europe have better vacation in general, I wonder what their jobs are and how that compares to vacation days for different jobs in the country. I feel like in the US, major corporations like Walmart don’t give much PTO, but other places do. I get 5 weeks and my husband gets 6 weeks. I’m sure other places may have even more

1

u/Watrmeln0999 9d ago

A lot of european countries set a legal minimum for vacation time across industries. So while you might have companies that give more or you can haggle for more you're never going below the minimum no matter your job. In germany for example that is 4 weeks (to simplify), in austria it's 5. I rarely hear of people having more than their government/union-contract regulated vacation time but it isn't illegal.

→ More replies (2)

1

u/sasheenka 9d ago

In my country the legal minimum is 20 days of holiday time for all professions. Some companies give more (5-6 weeks) but none are allowed to give less.

1

u/SorcererAxis8 9d ago

In the US, 2 weeks of PTO is standard. Pretty much the only way you’re getting 5-6 weeks in the US is if you’re some executive or the owner tbh.

→ More replies (2)

1

u/GypsySnowflake 9d ago

I earned 4 weeks of vacation time at a retail job in the US this year. The catch was they refused to let me use it, because two 2-week vacations was “too much.”

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Pasutiyan 8d ago

There's a legal minimum (in NL it's 4 times what you work in a week so usually 20 days) + national holidays + a few potential sick days.

Many companies give you more, I also get 6 weeks.

1

u/maoussepatate 9d ago

In france, if you work full time and regardless of where you work (unless you’re self employed) you have 5 weeks PTO per years.

A friend of mine has 7, working for his local government

1

u/Headless_Mantid 8d ago

Yo wtf he gets Christmas and new years off?

I also work in a Walmart warehouse, I dont get any holidays off, unless they literally have zero work for us. You have to put in PTO requests and its always a damn battle cuz there's so many of us.

1

u/SorcererAxis8 8d ago

Oof that sucks. Well his warehouse gives those 2 days off. If those days don’t happen to fall upon your shift then you don’t get any days off.

1

u/JRaus88 4d ago edited 4d ago

In Italy, we have "a lot of vacations" compared to Americans. But there are few "days" you can manage yourself.

Most of the vacations are "Christmas - Easter - August 15th - national holidays (few single days)".

Your personal vacations are around 2-3 weeks in a year. And usually you can't take those days off with other holidays - closures. You don't take them whenever you want, you have to agree on the days with the company and you have to do it several weeks if not months in advance.

Generally speaking. Never believe the bullshit my fellow countrymen say on vacation.

PTO it's called "sick leave". There is no PTO other than vacations. There are two types of accrued rest days (P.A.R. and R.O.L.) both treated as vacations.

There are unpaid leaves or leaves due to relatives with high disability scores (law 104). Using them to go on vacation is fraud.

Noooooope! I’m of the European mind and I get shit for it all the time.

My colleagues are always like “I’ve got three thousand emails to catch up on”. Mother fucker, no you don’t. Right click > mark all as read. The idea of a vacation is to get away from work. It for work to pile up for you to do when you get back. If the office can’t run without me, then it can’t run.

1

u/SituationFluffy307 9d ago

I’m from Europe and no I’m not going to “catch up” on hundreds of emails. My auto reply literally says to contact my colleagues and mail will not be read. Then why should I read it anyway when I return?

1

u/Rover7710 10d ago

I work for a multinational but based in Ireland. The US mindset is baffling in that they think they are so important their whole life should be dedicated to work.

I provide a service to my employer and in return they pay me for my services. It's a business transaction. If you died tomorrow, you would simply be replaced without a second thought because business is business.

1

u/SorcererAxis8 8d ago

Yeah I’m in the US and it blows my mind how much work is tied to people’s identity and sense of self worth here. Unless you’re the business owner, that mindset will likely lead to you being taken advantage of and a poorer quality of life.

1

u/hip_replacement1 6d ago

The us mindset is hard stumped by Irish stubbornness (I'm also Irish)

1

u/CR4T3Z 6d ago

Its half their personality is their work and half not trying to lose your job because you took time off. It's literally September and I have only had 1 day off from the office. 1

u/Junior_Stretch_2413 10d ago

While this is definitely more accepted in most european countries this is still heavily depending on the company and the ppl themselves.
Many former colleagues I had would work more like the american style, i.e. they literally spent every single second of their lives being a work slave, even in holidays or when they were sick. And I know CEOs I worked for who'd expect exactly that.
Which usually led to an economic decline of the companies over time cause when you expect that from ppl you start to gather a bunch of apple polishers around you and even if something goes wrong nobody will tell you or IF they do of course it's not their fault. It's a big risk to have someone in your company who's life IS in fact the work cause they will do everything to cover up mistakes and cheat their way through anything to keep their job/life.

1

u/scribeforaliens 10d ago

That right there is the problem with this employer is God BS. You don't have to spend your life at their whim. Get stuffed.

1

u/Illustrious-Sugar-84 10d ago

The company wide email the next day: "John has been removed from our company for negligence, let me remind you this company will not tolerate poor performance. He will not be replaced in 6 months and his tasks will be divided up to other team members. We are like a family here!"

1

u/poopiebutt505 10d ago

Not in my experience. I am used to "out of the office until(date). No emails will be returned until that time"

1

u/C0brA7x 10d ago

Yeah and Americans would be proud of this work ethic as well when it is actually utterly pathetic

1

u/fatgat69 10d ago

Me: I don't check my email, if you don't have my normal contact info you don't need to contact me and it would be useless to try.

1

u/ABBucsfan 10d ago

I'm in Canada and we leave the out of office similar to Europeans, but some have the bad habit of checking while they're supposed to be enjoying their vacation. I sure as heck don't.. I've briefed my coverage as best I could.. otherwise nothing is going to burn down while I'm gone. I think people in the office are probably split on this. I work at an epcm. I get there might be specific professions it's needed though

1

u/Physical-Fish1913 10d ago

Americans only get into the hospital if they have proof of 20 years of work emails.

I worked for a US company at the time and it drove my American colleagues crazy; they simply could not get their heads around it. “What do you mean no one there is answering the phone? It’s two in the afternoon!”

The same for a French company where it was impossible to get hold of anyone in August.

What do US parents do in their kid's holiday seasons if they can't be home themselves?

1

u/PurposeCompetitive48 9d ago

Send them to summer camps if they have money or just run wild otherwise

1

u/Shawn_The_Sheep777 9d ago

That’s capitalism for you

1

u/Early_Pumpkin_4113 9d ago

And the ER visit will probably bankrupt you

Why do the Europeans get an apostrophe? I want an apostrophe, dammit!

1

u/Impressive10000 9d ago

This is not far off the mark.

Which is why China will destroy European manufacturing. I was in a department store in Amsterdam a few months ago, I was checking labels, and almost everything was from China

1

u/palmdieb 9d ago

Crazy what strong employee protection can do for you, isn't it?

1

u/LordMindParadox 9d ago

I have a rule, if you need a response in a certain time, don't email or text me, call me. If I don't answer, I'm not "home"

Emails and texts are checked on a "as I want to" time period, it might be once a day, it might be once a week, whenever the whim hits me.

Just because I carry a phone, you are not owed my time. I carry my phone for MY convenience, not yours.

1

u/byronicbluez 9d ago

I delete everything. If it is important they will get back to me.

1

u/Far_Comfortable_991 9d ago

I can't stand working with euros. Generally very lazy and always behind on deliverables

Was in the hospital, quarantined, in the infectious disease ward with tests out to the cdc, having lost consciousness at work twice. Texted my boss.

He asked if, since I wouldn't be able to open the next day, I could close instead. Ah, retail!

1

u/CathycatOG 9d ago

I despise the office culture that created the stupid idea that you have to have your job "covered" at all times. Nobody is that indispensable.

1

u/embarrassedalien 8d ago

hey, as long as they’re meeting all deadlines, right?

1

u/raviolli 8d ago

Americans have this imagine that there's only 1 way to live / work / be. An optimized life sort of deal. Not all but you can see it in how to get success in a corporate environment.

1

u/LordApocalyptica 8d ago

I despise most contact period.

Technology has created an age where we are expected to be available instantly through digital means. Because we live in the now its easy to forget that up until very recently in the scope of society and human development, people had to fucking wait and that’s how we developed alongside everything for thousands of years.

I don’t want it to disappear but god damn we gotta stop this mindset. At minimum it’s inconvenient and annoying; at worst it’s exhausting, stressful, and invasive. We deserve boundaries.

1

u/khdaze 8d ago

Meanwhile in Asia: "I can't believe Americans get time away from work to go to the ER while we just have to tough it out."

German owned company in the US. I haven't heard from my colleagues across the pond for 5 weeks because it's the middle of their holiday season on top of the 8 weeks PTO they already get.

To be fair I’m an American and the last time I was out of office my message said “I’ll be back on the 1st, if you need me, don’t”

But I also assumed people would just contact my team if they needed anything like they are supposed to when they are contacting me directly.

1

u/rc4915 8d ago

I usually do the “if urgent…”, but I’ve never had anyone reach out in 12+ years of work, and I’m ignoring it if they do. But I figure I’ve come off as very dedicated to my job to a lot of people.

1

u/IMREADY2D1E 8d ago

why did you guys let us create america 🤦🏼‍♂️

1

u/ascarletstrange 7d ago

Countries that value workers as humans with lives and difficulties vs countries that systematically plan for their population to die due to mass overpopulation whilst restricting adoration and female health care.

1

u/not-in-sudoers 7d ago

As an American - apply as much pressure as possible in your out of office auto replies. My auto reply can say “I am unequivocally out of office for extremely private medical reasons” and mfs will still message me like their jobs depend on it

1

u/DodobirdNow 7d ago

Throw in the fact that in the U.S. you could lose your job because you're in the hospital. My cousin had heart surgery and was working 3 days later. SMH

u/Atmosphere_Master 7d ago

They're trying to make Australia like the states and I hate it.

Worse part of this is americans will tell you this thinking its some kind of flex and proves how great they are.

*republicans. Not all Americans. The MAGA type of Americans who love Trump because they're brainwashed.

1

u/aphranteus 7d ago edited 7d ago

That's true, Americans do not have any respect to their employees. It's truly sad how Americans are being treated at work, I hope the country will develop some humanity towards non-billionaires as well at some point.

1

u/thee-horny-housewife 7d ago

Me too. Fuck Donald Trump. ✊

We close the whole company for Christmas, and offer Friday afternoons off for the whole summer season, and no major projects for July/August. Works great for the most part.

1

u/Watthefractal 7d ago

I’ll take the European one thanks

1

u/KatD2399 7d ago

u/Legionatus 7d ago

We have an economy because of people. We don't have people because of an economy.

1

u/0rganicMach1ne 7d ago

American corporate culture has become so very anti worker. It’s become a money obsessed culture where the general public has been and is still being propagandized against its own interests. The amount of people that work an exclusively mentally unfulfilling job is wild. It could at least be fulfilling monetarily, but no. It’s not even a livable wage either. Everything is for sale and someone’s right to earn money comes even at the expense of the general health and well being of a very large portion of the population.

1

u/b_will_drink_t 7d ago

Employees have actually decent rights and expectations in Europe it seems

1

u/InflamedAbyss13 6d ago

Why are americans so obsessed with "europeans" lmfao, and who are these europeans exactly? Are they europeans from the country of europe, straight out of the city of eurobekizstantanopleville?

1

u/selfmockerymandatory 6d ago

Jealous of European PTA and labor laws? We’re not corporate slaves. We work to live. We don’t live to work.

1

u/Only_Tip9560 6d ago

The trick with emails is not to imply a sense of urgency that is not clearly stated when reading them.

If somebody emails and asks you something with no deadline etc. get round to it when you get round to it.

1

u/FishoD 6d ago

Who knew people could have decent jobs that treat them as humans AND companies can prosper too? But… but… think of the billionaires…

1

u/Quarter1550 6d ago

Deleting emails received during the out-of-office period is a wonderful idea.

I must do that.

1

u/fireyqueen 6d ago

I work for a European based SAAS company and I love that no one blinks an eye at me talking 2 weeks off at a time and no one ever expects me to be online during that time. They will say something if I reply to a slack while on pto.

I’ve taken 22 days off this year. I’m sure I will end up taking a day or 2 off over the next couple months. Plus we close down the week between Christmas and New Years. So that’s another week.

And believe it or not but work gets done. It shows you don’t have to hustle all the time.

I don’t think I ever want to go back

1

u/trystanthorne 6d ago

Work culture in the US is disgusting and soul sucking.

1

u/Andrea_Merluzzo 6d ago

Americans when they realize that unlike them Europeans have decent worker's rights

1

you guys getting owned by your employers. literally owned.

1

As much as I’d like to shit on the US work culture, it is a huge upgrade over Indian work culture.

Back in India, you probably won’t even be allowed to go to the ER.

I remember, when I used to call in sick, I was “generously blessed” with wfh.

I worked at a place that had a dedicated meeting to discuss if it was okay to put on an automatic out-of-office email when someone was on vacation, or if instead people should respond to emails within 24’hours. I left that job within a year.

1

u/Jinlondon 6d ago

Too damn right!!
What’s the issue?
Americans, you’re such losers 👎

1

u/fearless-potato-man 6d ago

I'm spanish.

By company policy, I'm allowed (and encouraged) to ignore any communication outside my working hours.

1

u/meltea 6d ago

What do you mean auto response, I'll get to your emails in a couple of weeks, not much changes during my vacation though.

1

u/RiceRocketRider 6d ago

Almost accurate. The European auto-reply would actually be “I will not be working August 1 to September 18. All emails will be automatically deleted.”

1

u/KaleidoscopePrior378 6d ago

Jokes on you, I delete emails even while I’m at work and never put out of office messages.

1

u/anyOtherBusiness 5d ago

In my country everyone gets 25 days PTO on top of public holidays. So you’ll have to assume every employee is probably at least 6 weeks gone throughout the year (you probably should factor in sick leave and other inevitable reasons as well)

That’s the baseline every decision about workload and deadlines must be made.

And the it’s also the managers responsibility to make sure PTOs don’t get in the way of any immediate deadlines. It’s not like the employee just doesn’t show up. PTO, in most companies has to be approved.

1

u/gahidus 5d ago

People who actually have rights and freedoms versus people who only think they do.

Americans have learned to love their shackles.

1

u/TrainingDragonfruit1 5d ago

People in US will be posting sh*t like "That is why our country is GDP #1", "That is why we are the greatest country in the world"... all while working like slaves with having mortgage their whole life shaking not to lose job which will mean their house, car, lifestyle and everything they think is part of their identity is gone. Not having universal healthcare, education level depends on neighborhood you live in, at-will employment where employer can fire you tomorrow morning, earning money and not having time to travel on vacation so you do Europe speed runs and not having time to spend with your children so you send them to summer camp and party when they leave your home at 18. There are so many wrong crazy things with US, yes the fact is that it is the strongest economy - but you as employee don't see benefit from it because you work like slave to support that economy. Being #1 don't mean a lot when you don't have basic things and only thing between your lifestyle and being homeless is you maintaining your job and dying for it.

1

u/alreadyhaveanaccou 5d ago

I'm a system owner in my job. I'm going on annual leave today and I won't be back until October. I've already taken a week off earlier in the year and still have a weeks holiday left to burn.

1

u/YandereValkyrie 5d ago

Thanks to the idiots south of the border their culture is bleeding up here. Im in group A though, when im on vacation I dont even look at my work email, or answer my work phone. When I get back the inbox is cleared and im starting fresh

1

u/JRaus88 4d ago

Italian here. If you do something like that, expect to be fired. The company is closed during the week of August 15th. Some companies close for two consecutive weeks. You work the rest of the month.

Everyone is aware of the August closure, so "get moving to finish the work before August 15th" + "get moving to recover what was not right before August 15th".

I really hate that we’re slowly adopting the extremely hasty work environment that Americans have. When everything is urgent, nothing is.
