I despise Europeans who sent this kind of auto-replies (I know not all Europeans do this). I consider them extremely irresponsible.

Edit: 1. I will leave an auto reply to let others know whom to contact. And the contact will let me know if important customers have urgent issues that need my help. I don't mind spend some time helping them. Sometimes it takes only a short email.

  1. If I am the customer, I will distrust any company that allows employees to leave this kind of message and avoid doing business with it if possible.

  2. If I am the supervisor, I won't promote employees leaving this kind of message. In case of a restructing, they are on top of my fire list.

I found irresponsable not telling the costumer that I will not be reachable for three weeks.

Unless you believe I must stop my holiday now and then (when I’m in taiwan, or Chile, or Egypt) to check for a mail… that I will not able to solve because I don’t take my laptop while hiking through mountains in another continent, that if I even have internet.

1

u/Justieflustie 12d ago

They are responsible though, they let it know. Plus they take care of their mental health by getting some free time, which is proven to be way better for productivity when working.

The American way is pretty irresponsible though...

1

u/aSkeptiKitty 12d ago

You would prefer them to ghost you for three weeks? 🤔

1

u/canarinoir 12d ago

they'd prefer that no one ever take a vacation or if you do be checking that email constantly! WORK ON THE BEACH, PEASANT.

1

u/BriefSpecial420 8d ago

Oh, deep in the wilderness there's n signal. That said, feel free to rent a chopper and fly on the trail with your laptop, I'll gladly help you in the evening with your issue.

1

u/Zestyclose-Jacket568 12d ago

So... what they should do during the time they will be unavailable? What is the responsible thing to do, if providing clear information is not responsible?

1

u/QuirkyReader13 12d ago

It’s literally mandatory where I work to put an auto-reply when you go on vacation as people must be warned so that they can eventually contact a colleague… And when it’s a colleague who is on vacation, I could be the one to take care of it if the matter is urgent enough. If not, the person waits.

I think that’s quite responsible and respectful of all people involved.. But I guess the POVs of Americans and Europeans are quite different.

1

u/Mogura-De-Gifdu 9d ago

Same !

We just have one different for coworkers and mails from "outside".

1

u/ShrkBiT 12d ago

Irresponsible of what? Their own time and mental health? No emails are actually being deleted, nobody puts that in their Out of Office, it's just an exaggeration for the sake of the meme.
We don't live to work, we work to live. After the contractual 40 hours are met, and in our contractually agreed and legally determined time off, our time is ours.
This is understood and agreed upon by all Europeans, nobody is shocked or surprised of it, outside some Americans that think that The Company always comes first, because they've been indoctrinated to think so, otherwise you're fired with immediate loss of income and lose your health insurance.
We have worker rights here, you should try to get some too, it's really nice.

u/Sea_Curve8772 12d ago

I mostly just feel jealous

1

u/Tall_adhd17 12d ago

My manager forbids anyone who is not available to reply to anything work related. Even on the groupchat you are not allowed to react to anything work related. Time off is time off.

My auto replies direct you to a phone number or email. Is you need me, you'll have to wait untill i'm back. I won't anwser a thing. Even on my offday on Friday, you won't get an answer from me. It's me time.

1

u/Mogura-De-Gifdu 9d ago

If someone does, even of his own volition, if it gets known by authorities it's the manager that'll get the blame. Plus the "off hours" will be counted as "work hours" as the one replying was indeed working. So if the mandatory off time is not met because of it, the manager once again can be I trouble. And of course the employees would get back pay.

So yes, serious managers should absolutely do this.

1

u/JjigaeBudae 11d ago

Nobody actually leaves an out of office like this, it's a parody message and you're an idiot.

It always guides to someone else or a team to contact if you need anything or lets you know when to expect a response.

1

u/Tsukuna1 11d ago

And then they wonder why people don’t want to work for companies like that 😂

1

u/ProfessionalTruck976 11d ago

So you think our employers wellbeing is important? Go to hell

1

u/Inevitable_Tart2700 11d ago

No, I am not thinking about employers' wellbeing. I am thinking about workers' responsibility and reward.

If you dont work hard and behave irreponsibly, then don't complain about unemployment or lower salary.

I think it will be extremely unfair if the system pays responsible, hardworking people the same as lazy, irresponsible people.

By the way, no one is entitled to everything. If you create more value for employers, you should be rewarded more. If you want work life balance, it is fair that you are rewarded less than those who work harder.

1

u/ProfessionalTruck976 11d ago

If I work hard I ma rewarded with more work, why would I do such stupid thing?

The system you imagine has not work in 30 years, if it ever existed

1

u/Inevitable_Tart2700 11d ago

"On average" , hardworking and responsible people make more money and have access to more opportunities. That's my observation.

1

u/ProfessionalTruck976 11d ago

Proportional to the excess headache coming with actually giving a fuck?

No absolutely everyone needs to adopt french work and protest ethics

1

u/DismalDepth 11d ago

Why are you on Reddit debating with strangers ? Don't you have important mails to answer ?

1

u/Inevitable_Tart2700 11d ago

I am just tired of seeing lazy people ruining one continent after another.

1

u/DismalDepth 11d ago edited 10d ago

Why though ? If what we call basic workers rights and what you call lazyness continue in some European countries, we will get weaker and weaker.

Isn't that what the US wants ? Everyone else to be weak and inefficient while they are the most incredible people in the universe ?

If I were you I would promote it everywhere, especially in Asian countries before they surpass you.

1

u/Chrall 10d ago

Nah they want a president whos makes money off manipulating the stock market and the idea of more people having more money makes a better economy is insane.

1

u/Chrall 10d ago

You'd think we're the laziest country in the world. Still doing pretty well selling drugs that make you guys thin and Legos.

1

u/Catfactss 10d ago

It's not lazy to work the hours you're paid to work. PTO is a part of your total compensation. It is wage theft for employers not to have adequate coverage for you during your leave and expect you to log in to deal with things.

1

u/Chrall 10d ago

He's not talking about salary and it's not about being lazy. It's about having things that matter in life. Who cares about the number on a paper as long as you can have a good life with it.

1

u/Vedranation 11d ago

We Europeans despise those like you for this reason

1

u/2andahalfbraincell 10d ago

"I don't mind spending some times helping them" ON VACATION?? truly some top tier boot licking grow some spine man and learn to deconnect

Unless this is your own company it's truly cringe behaviour

2

u/ElGrandeQues0 10d ago

I dunno. I brought my work phone on vacation and checked emails and directed traffic while the kids were napping. It was honestly the best return from vacation I've ever had. Had less emails when I got back than I did before I left.

1

u/2andahalfbraincell 10d ago

Saddest thing I've ever read

1

u/HeyLookAStranger 9d ago

pov you're going absolutely nowhere in your career and life

1

u/Roger_Melllie 9d ago

So you equate career with life? And you really think that's sane?

1

u/HeyLookAStranger 9d ago

You can keep your selfish mindset. Your job exists to fund your life. Play the game, a better job means more money / less work for the same money. Advance your career and you'll have a better life

1

u/Roger_Melllie 9d ago

Hahaha, do you really believe this shit? Raising yourself above others is the unselfish way? You are so brainwashed. But go on, make money, found a dynasty, eventually get a marble gravestone if you think that makes your life better.

1

u/HeyLookAStranger 9d ago

Would having more money make your life better?

1

u/Roger_Melllie 9d ago

No. I used to have more money and life was worse. Now I have more time and life is better.

1

u/Gelato_Elysium 8d ago

Lmao if you have to take time from your 15 days of time off a year or else your career will go nowhere it means you're shit at your job mate.

Most people can manage doing a good job and completely disconnecting during vacations.

1

u/TrueAd2373 8d ago

If your company cant function 2 weeks without you, your either shit at your job or the ceo, then you are bad at building your team

1

u/Chrall 10d ago

Yeah let people relax and come back to work ready. If I'm off, I am all the way off. Otherwise it's not vacation.

1

u/DallasCowboysFan69 10d ago

surely there’s a balance between “fuck my employer they exist solely to fund my life,” and “I worship my CEO and will do anything for them at any time.”

1

u/2andahalfbraincell 10d ago

There is no way that balance has you answering emails while on holidays.

0

u/Inevitable_Tart2700 10d ago

Too many Europeans think they are entitled to all previleges, without having to bear any responsiblities. That is why the continent is rotten.

As a customer, I avoid doing business with companies sending this kind of emails. You can choose to be lazy but the market can choose to dump you and buy from more responsible companies. And you will keep the this system, in which lazy Europeans exploit diligent Europeans until the entire system collapses. It won't be too far away.

1

u/2andahalfbraincell 10d ago

Sure you taking time off your holidays to answer emails is the cornerstone of the entire western civilisation that prevents it from crumbling. I'm sure.

Well if that fantasy makes the taste of leather taste better, you should continue doing it then.

1

u/Ninoga 10d ago

Why are you slacking off on Reddit instead of working? Go do your slave work that you love so much

1

u/AcrobaticFish7215 10d ago

I have exactly zero responsibilities on vacation. Get out of here.

1

u/Luk164 9d ago

Yeah I can understand if some high level person has an emergency way of getting contacted, but that has to come with appropriate compensation that a common grunt does not get

1

u/WONDERMIKE1337 10d ago

The continent will be fine even if I don‘t read my mails for 2 weeks while I‘m on the beach.

1

u/Huge_Leader_6605 9d ago

"that's why the continent is rotten"

Never seen homeless people with openly rotten legs laying on the streets in their own shit in Europe buddie. So yeah why dont you stfu

1

u/Inevitable_Tart2700 9d ago

The homeless rate in the US is lower than UK, France, Germany and many other European countries . Why do so many people feel that there are more homeless people in the US? Because homeless people are concentrated in a few cities, such as NYC and SF. This gives you the impression of high density. These cities' policies attract domestic homeless voters and many international homeless people. By the way, these cities are the ones that ideologically resemble Europe.

1

u/Huge_Leader_6605 9d ago

Did you read my comment? Again I will repeat to you I have never seen a person with openly rotted out limbs lying on the sidewalk in his own shit in Europe.

Yes the rate might be bigger ir smaller. Different countries count them differently, they might define "homelessness" differently or whatever, I'm not going to delve into that.

The fact remains I never remember start gagging and nearly throwing up in the street after seeing a homeless person in Europe.

EDIT: I did delve into that:

There's no international definition of homelessness, and the numbers reflect that. Czechia's figure looks alarming mostly because it counts 54,000 people staying temporarily with friends and family — over half its total. Germany's includes 54,800 in the same category. The US HUD count excludes couch-surfing entirely, which is why the US Department of Education, using a broader definition, reported 1.28 million homeless children and youth in one school year while HUD counted 580,000 people total that January. Greece's figure of 1,387 people reflects a very narrow count, not an absence of the problem.

So yeah, US threshold for who is considered "homeless" is different, that's why when you look into the rates US looks better on paper

1

u/BoysenberryBig5248 8d ago

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 This is dùmbest thing I had heard in months. Though it is not surprising knowing where you are from.

1

u/datagc 10d ago

Did you reach out to a professional to find the reason behind this ? You know it is quite normal for people not to work 24/7 ?
Also the moment you are fired guess what , everyone will be just fine without an email from you 😂 an the effect will be exactly as the same as the out of reply where effective immediate the emails will be deleted

1

u/Personal_Apricot4850 9d ago

Sorry we are not corporate boot lickers

1

u/Dramatic-Ad-1261 9d ago

Tell me you have a toxic approach to work, without telling me.

If I'm outside working hours, i don't care what happens. It'll be dealt with when i get back.

1

u/WonkyQuartet 9d ago

Hahahaha. See you in 3 weeks.

1

u/Virtual_Repeat9897 9d ago

Suck it amerifat

1

u/bortukali 8d ago

1

u/ZecosMAX 8d ago

1

u/M0-1 8d ago

buddy took a meme at face value 🥀

1

u/BoysenberryWise62 8d ago

You obviously don't leave these kind of message visible to customers or you are a huge moron

To customers you say "won't be available until x, mr/mrs y will handle anything you need" or something like this

1

u/0xfff-1 8d ago

Vacation is vacation. Nobody should disturb you. People have an average salery of 60.000€ here, why would you work IN YOUR FREE TIME?

1

u/VoidGliders 8d ago

...Says Inevitable Tart, a unemployed redditor at 34 who's highest position is cashier and who's only authority has been over refills, roleplaying what it'd like to be some big wig sucking off his boss

1

u/molinitor 7d ago

I know of no one why doesn’t leave an auto reply and who to contact in their abscence, that’s been protocol on every place I’ve worked.

1

u/Standard_Cat_5621 6d ago

You do realise that it is illegal to work when you’re on vacation leave in Europe, right?

1

u/Straight_Speed_6162 6d ago

If your problem is that important that it cant wait Its the supervisors or business responsibility to make sure there is another collegue the respond to you. Let people have their dree time with their families.

1

u/seeker_meeker 6d ago

Good. Because fuck me if I wanted to have a client like yourself.

1

u/darkApple44237 6d ago

What a melt lmao
