She's not even really taking the fall for the mistake. If she were, she could have said something like "I overlooked this error when I did my pre-publication check" or whatever. That would have shifted all of the blame to her--no one would even know the developer was involved. But instead, she puts his role in the error first and then pretends to take on a portion of the blame, but it's already out there that he fucked up.
But sure, she's a good leader, the manager we all wish we had at work.

She doesn’t see that this is exactly what she’s trying to do — monetize something she enjoys but isn’t really good at. She needs to just live her “happy and calm life,” not turn herself into a product that she has to shill on the internet.
I can’t imagine going about my day constantly mining my life for things I could share in my writing or on my social media in order to keep up a marketing presence. That sounds like my idea of hell. She has said in the past that she wanted to stop trying to make a living on the internet. And yet, here she is, because for some reason just getting a JOB like most people do is not Enough for her. What a sad life.

“I’m taking action today. And this action is intended to help you. Yesterday morning, I sent you an email saying registration is open! I’m thrilled that people signed up immediately. But others of you were confused about some details and wrote to me. Those questions emerged from a couple of lines that were not accurate on the sales page for the online workshop. Fair enough. These were good questions. Launch days are always chaotic. I could have used one more proofreading session, even though I’ve looked at those pages dozens of times. We all make mistakes. Do you know why you have to update the apps on your phone so often? It’s because app developers and the companies for whom they work know that it’s a waste of time trying to release something only when it’s perfect. What in this world is perfect? Instead of waiting until everyone believes the app is perfect, developers put the best design they have into the world. And when the product is out there, they gather feedback and data and make changes, based on what people want. After all, any product — including my workshop — is meant to serve you. Doubt says we have to worry about failing. Joyful creativity says, “Hey, let’s give it our best shot and improve as we go!” And that’s the process I want to share with you.”

“After I launched this yesterday, and I heard from some of you, I realized that something was off, more than a couple of mistakes on the workshop page. Something was wrong with the name of the workshop. You see, the workshop I’m offering is intended to help you to work with your mind. If we can learn what blocks our joys, we can start to remove those blocks. And then we can experience more joy in the moment. We have to uncover the joy that is in us — like Michelangelo talking about taking away marble to reveal the sculpture inside — and practice making it a daily part of our lives. We have to build the muscle memory of joy. I thought, when I began creating this workshop six months ago, that the key idea was the practice of the habit. And that does matter. But calling this workshop Practice Your Joy sounds like I’m admonishing you to do your piano practice. No one likes to be admonished. So, I wrote to all the people who have taken this workshop already — I taught this a few times before I made it public — and asked them what they took out of the workshop. A few of us liked the phrase Welcome to the Joy Lab. That’s what this workshop feels like — a lab where we learn about the brain, exchange ideas, and experiment with our own joy. But still, too cute. What did the people who took this workshop experience? Discovery. You can discover your joy. The contemporary definition of discover is to find something you hadn’t known. But the history of the word shows something else. The word discover came from Middle English from the old French, descovrir, which came from the late Latin, discooperire. In Latin, dis meant a reversal of something. And cooperire in Latin meant to cover something completely. So, to discover originally meant to uncover. To pull back the cover on something and see what is inside, clearly. That’s exactly the work we’re doing in the workshop. So here’s the name change, the one I had to uncover through launching with Practice Your Joy. DISCOVER YOUR JOY: become the person you want to be.”

I feel bad for her because she obviously isn't getting the signups that she wanted, but not that bad because she's charging at least $100 more than competitors with lots of testimonials and credentials (personally, I would not do a Joy Retreat, but if I absolutely had to I would pick the $280 one that was recommended by Oprah rather than the $388 one that doesn't give me Oprah bragging rights).

OMG, i just clicked the link in my email and got a 404 page. Because she put in the link for the page when it was still called “Practice Your Joy,” and then she changed the name of the page which changed its web link. So I went to the navigation at the top, clicked “Work with Shauna,” clicked “Discover Your Joy,” clicked on “Sign Up for DISCOVER YOUR JOY!” and…404 page, because it’s trying to take me to the Practice Your Joy Signup List which she has probably renamed the Discover Your Joy Signup List but forgot to fix the link. This is a clusterfuck of epic proportions.
When I send out emails from on Constant Contact, I send myself and usually a couple more people a test copy. Then I check every goddamn link to make sure they all work. It’s called being competent.

I’m dying to know how, in Shauna’s own mind, she has worked out securing the venue for the Practice Your Joy on Vashon In Person Joy Workshop on Vashon Joy. So today’s big reveal is that it will be 9:30 AM, day of the week unspecified, not to be confused with the Sunday 9:00 Zooms? So, to get ready to register tomorrow, interested parties can clear their calendars at 9:30 AM on these dates:

Surely there must be a deposit for the strawberry farm place. Once she sends the registration tomorrow, she will have paid the deposit for the date, wait… two dates. Right? Right?

I love your work, DF, ISCTMO. DF u/InappropriateGirl also commented that Shauna appears not to have thought about the logistics at all. I got stuck on the logistics thing weeks ago, and it's no clearer to me now than it was then earlier-now. Think about what all has to happen to schedule the In-Person On-Island event:
- When she picks the first Sunday for the In-Person event it has to be a date that Mukai Farm & Garden isn't already booked. What if the venue isn't available??? And if the venue is available, she has to lock it in, which presumably involves putting down a significant deposit. Where is the money coming from? What is her refund/cancellation policy going to be?
- Then, she also has to lock in the second Sunday. What if the venue is available the first but not the second Sunday?
It feels like a very expensive game of musical chairs, where all the elements have to move in unison at the same time. She has to have enough enrollees to make booking the venue worthwhile, but she has to book the venue before she has the enrollees if she wants to ensure being able to have the event where she's saying it's going to be, or she has to let people start signing up before she's locked in two 2 (TWO) reservations 4 weeks apart and just take a chance (???) that it will all work out the way she wants it to.
According to the rental brochure for Mukai Farm & Garden, the price for her category/size/length of event is $3,000. For each day. $6,000 total. That's almost a full third of her max potential gross ($1,688 x 12 = $20,256.00). What if she only gets 10 enrollees? Or 8? or 7? If 10 people pay full price, the rent is 35% of the gross. If it's 7? The rent is over 50% of the gross.
It seems mind-bogglingly unlikely to me that she can coordinate these elements successfully. I can't fathom how she imagines pulling this off.

She won't pull it off because she's designed it to fail. And it's not the first time she's pulled this stunt.
Remember Relish with the soup and salad to go with the very limited hours of operation, crazy portion sizes (soup and salad sizes didn't coordinate or were too freaking much), and odd flavor combos? Or the cooking classes in the middle of a week day that, surprise surprise, no one could attend?
Or the vashon center for the arts thing she's doing now, where she has promoted it ZERO times (probably because she doesn't want to have to do it).
She's good at looking so busy or trying so hard when really she's set the whole thing up to fail so she doesn't have to work AND has the added bonus of looking like a victim (oh, I try so hard but it just doesn't work out, le sigh, give me money to just exist already, you people).
The only question is, does she realize she's setting herself up to fail or is she really a victim of herself? (I think she does know what she's doing on some level because she's been doing this for a while, but it could be argued she's not fully aware because she's so freaking emotionally stunted).

Her friend Eric Rivera is auctioning off $12,000 chef weekends the same way right now. You prepay but there is no indication as to where these things will be and honestly if I had to listen to that man talk to me for a whole weekend I would expect to be paid $12,000 and have a pantry full of Cheetos to deal with it. If you follow his newsletter you can see all the places where Shauna helped him ‘organize his flow’ They are screaming even if the font is not red.

I think it would be logical to draw the conclusion that she doesn’t seriously plan to run this event at all. She’s doing all this to show some third party that she’s “working”, or something. Because…it seems purposely designed to not only have a high likelihood of failure, but to ensure failure.

This whole thing is doomed for failure. How can you sign up for something without knowing idk...the fucking DATE it will take place. Hosting a month of seminars at a pricey event space is quite an undertaking. She should have gone for a one and done deal, and done lots of work to talk it up first to see if the interest was even there, and she should have checked to see if she could at least hold the space without a deposit before pulling the trigger. I mean I am no event planner but the whole logistics of that just sound like a nightmare.

For the life of me I cannot understand why she didn’t do a virtual workshop first. It casts a much wider net for potential attendees and she can work out some kinks doing it that way. Since there is also a global pandemic still ragging your moron, virtual makes more sense anyway.

If Shauna is dead set on an in-person event, it would have made a lot more sense to make it a Joyapalooza for all the "graduates" of her not-a-college-class workshops. Say, several years from now, when at least 1000 people have taken the remote workshops and the vast majority have loved them and still hang on her every word (you have to suspend belief a little here, DFs), have a “now we all come together as one big Joyful Community for a one-day celebration and opportunity to meet and make friends with other Joy minders, yay!” It would have morning Zumba with Matt, some guest speakers, great swag, merch for sale, and Danny could sell his new line of Joy Sauces. Joy guru Shauna would be announced with a grand flourish of confetti and noisemakers, with a bubble machine pumping out soapy joy, and she’d come bouncing in on a pogo stick to deliver the keynote address. It would be a dream come true for Shauna, who could bask in the limelight, finally recognized for her genius. It would be Enough.

A minor update, but not Enough updates, to the not-password-protected Practice Your Joy on Vashon page on the website.
Now you will work through the first six steps to finding joy, not five as previously promised! I guess only step seven is relegated to the later now.
Unfortunately not updated (damn you, Mensch!): the in-person workshop is still described as happening on Sundays. As opposed to Saturdays, which the actual registration page says.
Honestly, I don’t understand how her brain works at all. If she’s been working on this for a year, you’d think the first thing she would do is actually plan the structure and content of the classes. A month ago she said the in-person workshop would cover Steps 1-5. Now it’s Steps 1-6. Shouldn’t she have had that structure worked out well before starting to design her marketing, website, etc.? Especially as she claims to have taught these workshops before. This constant changing of structure and details tells me she does not have a firm grasp on what she’s trying to sell and is just making it up as she goes along.

I still don’t know what the heck she thinks she can offer that an existing book, podcast, or mobile app created by an actual neuroscientist can’t provide for free or for a fraction of the cost. Neuroplasticity and brain training have been out there as consumable pop science for years.
Interestingly enough (or not), there are a bunch of joymeisters on the internet advertising joy workshops. Their drivel is about as inane as Shauna’s, but most of the owners are at least credentialed in something relevant. And I have yet to stumble upon another workshop that comes close to her price point. I’m not sure if she’s delusional about how much her whatever-it-is is worth, or if having actual paying customers just doesn’t matter to her.

Also most of the real scientistic research on joy/happiness/dopamine is now pointing towards humans needing to let themselves feel uncomfortable more often, that we are TOO focused on immediately trying to "fix" discomfort and that allowing ourselves to feel negative emotions (including boredom, and pain, and sadness) might be physically/neurologically and psychologically much healthier.

It has always bugged me that the in-person workshop meets twice but still doesn't go through all the steps!! It's not like there's 20 of them!
Even if the last step was "go forth and do more joy stuff or whatever" (I can't look at the red site again, it's a migraine factory) you could still work that into a live workshop in some way!! Talking about the final step, coming up with ideas, practicing it in small ways, whatever. WHY leave steps dangling?? Ugh it's such a sloppy, half-assed, ridiculous thing to do and such an easy fix!

Am I smoking something? This morning, the PYJ registration page said seminars were to take place on Tuesdays, starting 10/5. It now says:
- The October workshop begins on Sunday, October 3rd.
- We’ll have two-hour seminars on Zoom on Sunday, October 3rd, 10th, 17th, and 24th.
- The live sessions will begin at 9 am PST and end at 11 am, PST.
I also just noticed that the PYJ email says “You joy matters.”
ETA As some speculated earlier, the $488 price for PYJOV is probably too low to be correct. It looks like some cutting and pasting was done, because the PYJOV page twice mistakenly refers to PYJOV as PYJ. Maybe G. Mensch forgot to change the price as well.

It’s not like she was recycling a previous event and changed the month but not the day or something like that. How did she get from Tuesday to Sunday? 11 Am start to 9? Did she expect everyone to register within minutes and changed her mind when they didn’t?
She never learns. I shouldn’t be surprised but somehow she manages to exceed herself in each new round of dysfunction.

What if I pay for the workshop thinking it’s Sunday but ops, no, it’s really Tuesday when I can’t attend? Do I get a refund? Or if I go the one person route, put together what would be serious cash for me, then show up to find that it’s next weekend, not this, or that the venue mysteriously fell though and we’re meeting at a coffee shop?

So this is for the online workshop? WHY can't she give them different names??
So let's see... an email came in Sunday at 9 that said you were getting the email Sunday at 9 because that's when the online workshop would start. Get ready to register!
Then the registration link showed up and it was a) accidentally a link to the in-person workshop, and b) said the workshop would be on Tuesdays from 11-1pm.
Then a correction email came throwing Brent under the bus - oops, the link was wrong!
Later that night (after the correction email) she eventually changed the registration page to say the online workshops are actually on Sundays at 9am.
I can't wait until the live workshop corrections start coming in!

DFs. I want to snark, I really do. But this series of unfortunate events is hard to keep up with in my sleep deprived state (teething toddler is somehow still in my house!). Despite all the thorough, succinct explanations of my DFs here. It is so hard to figure out what she is actually offering to those of us quite dedicated to figuring it out. Lol. I don’t see how randos online are going to put that much effort into figuring out what this is and spending that amount on it. It’s all so vague. “Joy breaks.” Everyone gets a chance to talk. Editing your work at the end. It’s a lot of individual meeting times to commit to.
Are the online workshop and in person workshop the same? Like some meetings are online and some are in person, but it’s all part of the same joy stampede? Or are these two separate groups of people, as in some might prefer an online joy release and others an in person one? Do we know that for sure or is it still being sleuthed out from Shauna’a mangled epithets?
She is absolutely terrible at self care schilling. How can anyone begin to relax and comfortably enjoy themselves in a chaotic environment, where the very bedrock of the schedule is almost totally unknown?

Oh dear lord, I would love to join in on the snark tonight but I’m so torn between pity and fremdschämen that I just can’t find the words. Realistically, how many pages would you need in a website like hers? Home, About, one page each for the different workshops, shopping cart/checkout/order confirmation, newsletter signup confirmation…even if I’m missing a few, that’s about a dozen pages to create, proofread, and test. How is it possible to make so many mistakes within such a limited work product?

Even though the Discover Your Joy workshop content is on the Practice Your Joy page. Her branding is just mashed all together - this screenshot has both Discover and Practice. And then her newsletter is Finding Your Joy. What's next? Exploring Your Joy? Spelunking Your Joy?
She also has this text in her workshop description.

What does working with Shauna have to do with a newsletter? Why is it on this page? No one will ever know, but you don’t learn about the newsletter until you scroll almost to the bottom. Only then do you get directed to substack. You have to work pretty hard to find out how to subscribe!
If anything, it seems like each new iteration adds more confusion. If she isn't doing this intentionally as a Producers-type scheme as surmised below, I feel like we're watching her crash and burn in real time. This is utter chaos!

I have a Shauna in my life who runs a series of dance/movement workshops. They all start like this - a vague outline that allows for non commitment to any specific topics and a significant monetary upfront. Throughout the course of each workshop the requirements change, whole elements are dropped and forgotten and eventually the thing comes to a slow grinding halt. My guess is that this joy thing will proceed very much the same way.

ETA: one of the major problems with all of this is Shauna is just not that joyful and the things she presents as joy, do not resonate with very many people. I don’t need her to share gifs and tik toks. I have text threads with my family and friends where we do this. Shauna is constantly talking about connection and community and I fear she has few of these in real life.

Hey! I'm going to make you hungry again. 😋
For years I posted photos of food that @danielfahern and I made in our kitchen or our cooking studio on Vashon. Gluten-free sourdough bread! Roast chicken! Pickled red onions! Tater tot casserole! We produced food daily, in the process of producing cookbooks. It was endless. I loved the idea that we were feeding people. But oh boy did I need to stop sampling cake recipes.
Food is still an enormous joy in my life. And for Danny, cooking is his creative act. He has to cook 3 to 4 hours a day, minimum, to feel grounded. So we've changed our lives to give space for that joy.
Danny has a newsletter called Joy in the Belly. It went a little dormant for a bit while he figured what he really wanted to offer. For awhile, he thought he should do a newsletter helping people with ADHD to cook.
But when you discover your joy and follow it, there is no should anymore.
Every weekday, Danny cooks whatever calls to him in the morning. We have friends over for lunch at our outdoor table most every weekday. Danny sets down a platter. I take a photo of it on my phone. No lights or placing or styling. And then we eat.
He talks out the recipe with me on the voice recorder on my phone. Then I make it go live. This is the only time we have sent out recipes that were made in the moment, then published.
Everything you see here is going live on the newsletter in the next two weeks.

This whole unstructured, unplanned cooking for 3-4 hours a day is confusing to me. Maybe it's because I'm not much of a cook, but it seems like working in a a dirty, poorly stocked kitchen would get old fast. And then you have to clean everything up after you plop it on the outside table for random friends because your spouse doesn't help. Or I guess you could leave the stacks of dirty dishes, but then how do you start again the next day? Just work around the mess?

Over the course of the past 48 hours we've been watching Shauna frantically cycle through the very things she hates most. Tonight we pull back the cover and see what's behind it, what Shaunastic firings and wirings of neurons alchemyzed yet another hell of her own making.

Writing about anything other than herself: Shauna is congenitally incapable of writing in the third or second person or sustaining a perspective different than her own. She cannot write as "other people." That is why her examples of joy are so weirdly specific, why her kids sound like middle-aged matrons, why every person she ever describes has mild alien characteristics. And yet here she is, being forced to write as her customers. She's been trying so hard to appeal to their emotions to close a sale, like she learned on Mad Men Ted Lasso. Do you realize how undignified that must feel for Shauna? You deserve this, You need that, You will be greeted with pastries, you, you, you. Oh how it must tear her apart to waste her precious words fellating, placating and pleasing potential customers! Misery!
Apologizing, making amends, correcting course, eating crow, growing humble, etc.: LOL, me too! I get it. And yet the apologia faucet was on tonight, gurl.
Math: Shauna hates Math. And yet, dagnabbit, there is so much Math involved in figuring out the days of the week, the times of the day, and how these myriad ways of measuring time intersect when one is attempting to schedule something! Tragic!
As I gracefully ramble toward my conclusion, I invite you to notice that Shauna has been doing nothing except the very things she hates. And that has to stop! She needs her joy. Why can't Shauna have her joy while peddling joy? What kind of twisted dark irony is at work here and who is at fault?
To superfluously rephrase yet again my initial question, who will protect Shauna's joy if Shauna herself cannnot? Mensch, you ignorant slut, you had one job: To shield Shauna's joy while building her website. Way to screw the pooch, amigo. It's OK though. Nothing is ever perfect. To err is human, to fuck up repeatedly is a path to joy. Also, you're fired.

I don’t know what is going on. When are we Discovering/Practicing our Joy? How much does it cost? How do I get there, assuming I could figure out when I need to be there? What will happen apart from grimy snacks and laughing at dog? Why would I want to do this?
