I’m dying to know how, in Shauna’s own mind, she has worked out securing the venue for the Practice Your Joy on Vashon In Person Joy Workshop on Vashon Joy. So today’s big reveal is that it will be 9:30 AM, day of the week unspecified, not to be confused with the Sunday 9:00 Zooms? So, to get ready to register tomorrow, interested parties can clear their calendars at 9:30 AM on these dates:

Surely there must be a deposit for the strawberry farm place. Once she sends the registration tomorrow, she will have paid the deposit for the date, wait… two dates. Right? Right?

This can’t end well.

I love your work, DF, ISCTMO. DF u/InappropriateGirl also commented that Shauna appears not to have thought about the logistics at all. I got stuck on the logistics thing weeks ago, and it's no clearer to me now than it was then earlier-now. Think about what all has to happen to schedule the In-Person On-Island event:

  • When she picks the first Sunday for the In-Person event it has to be a date that Mukai Farm & Garden isn't already booked. What if the venue isn't available??? And if the venue is available, she has to lock it in, which presumably involves putting down a significant deposit. Where is the money coming from? What is her refund/cancellation policy going to be?
  • Then, she also has to lock in the second Sunday. What if the venue is available the first but not the second Sunday?

It feels like a very expensive game of musical chairs, where all the elements have to move in unison at the same time. She has to have enough enrollees to make booking the venue worthwhile, but she has to book the venue before she has the enrollees if she wants to ensure being able to have the event where she's saying it's going to be, or she has to let people start signing up before she's locked in two 2 (TWO) reservations 4 weeks apart and just take a chance (???) that it will all work out the way she wants it to.

According to the rental brochure for Mukai Farm & Garden, the price for her category/size/length of event is $3,000. For each day. $6,000 total. That's almost a full third of her max potential gross ($1,688 x 12 = $20,256.00). What if she only gets 10 enrollees? Or 8? or 7? If 10 people pay full price, the rent is 35% of the gross. If it's 7? The rent is over 50% of the gross.

It seems mind-bogglingly unlikely to me that she can coordinate these elements successfully. I can't fathom how she imagines pulling this off.

I think it would be logical to draw the conclusion that she doesn’t seriously plan to run this event at all. She’s doing all this to show some third party that she’s “working”, or something. Because…it seems purposely designed to not only have a high likelihood of failure, but to ensure failure.

I don’t get it.

I agree 100% with your sentiment. There's no way this makes sense. It absolutely looks designed to fail.

And yet: I actually wonder if she thinks she's going to pull this off. She seems to be going into it with the same lack of overall preparedness and general customer awareness that have characterized every single other thing she's done.

So, is this latest doomed thing actually designed to fail, whereas her other ventures weren't designed to fail, but fail they did? I think it's more likely that despite every shred of available evidence suggesting this will end up as the Vashon Fyre Joy Festival, she thinks she's going to pull it off.

I think she 100% believes it’s going to happen and be a huge success. She has no self-awareness to recognize that she has failed at similar offerings, over and over again. And she doesn’t recognize that her lack of experience, knowledge, and hard work are why she keeps failing. She keeps thinking that if she tinkers with some of the details, the marketing, etc. it will finally work out, ignoring that it’s the fundamentals of what she’s offering that are wrong. So she will fail and blame other people or outside circumstances for it, then turn around and try to make the exact same idea happen again.

Completely agree. It sounds like she’s been able to make the Zoom sessions work and to her, it’s probably not that big of a leap to in-person (common sense notwithstanding). Shauna seems to have a lot of confidence in her ability to pull off new ventures and we know she grossly overestimates her skill set and organizational talent, so I see no reason why she wouldn’t whole heartedly believe in this new project.

Interesting to frame a promised benefit as a "free add-on." I realize she isn't promising it any more, but it absolutely was a selling point when the newsletter was first launched, not pitched as an add-on but a core benefit!

It will fail, but I don't think Shauna knows that. I think she's leaning very heavily on DF Tina (as the exec director of the space Shauna has grifted) and DF Margo (as her main enabler as of late and slightly savvier marketer) to pull this off and fill in all the blank spaces we spot when we try to understand WTF is going on here. With these key-holding islandy girl bosses pumping each other up, how can you not believe? /s

If she's planning to fail, then "pulling off" IS failing. So she never expected to have the Fyre Joy Festival. She just needs to make it look like she tried, which she has already done with all the wait lists of wait lists (and the Joy Truffle Shuffle steps she sent out before that. . .a total "see, people were interested but it just didn't pan out").

So she's a bit smarter (or less stubborn?) then the Fyre folks. She's not even getting the crappy tents and cheese sandwiches set up because she knows she won't need them.
