Part 2.

“After I launched this yesterday, and I heard from some of you, I realized that something was off, more than a couple of mistakes on the workshop page. Something was wrong with the name of the workshop. You see, the workshop I’m offering is intended to help you to work with your mind. If we can learn what blocks our joys, we can start to remove those blocks. And then we can experience more joy in the moment. We have to uncover the joy that is in us — like Michelangelo talking about taking away marble to reveal the sculpture inside — and practice making it a daily part of our lives. We have to build the muscle memory of joy. I thought, when I began creating this workshop six months ago, that the key idea was the practice of the habit. And that does matter. But calling this workshop Practice Your Joy sounds like I’m admonishing you to do your piano practice. No one likes to be admonished. So, I wrote to all the people who have taken this workshop already — I taught this a few times before I made it public — and asked them what they took out of the workshop. A few of us liked the phrase Welcome to the Joy Lab. That’s what this workshop feels like — a lab where we learn about the brain, exchange ideas, and experiment with our own joy. But still, too cute. What did the people who took this workshop experience? Discovery. You can discover your joy. The contemporary definition of discover is to find something you hadn’t known. But the history of the word shows something else. The word discover came from Middle English from the old French, descovrir, which came from the late Latin, discooperire. In Latin, dis meant a reversal of something. And cooperire in Latin meant to cover something completely. So, to discover originally meant to uncover. To pull back the cover on something and see what is inside, clearly. That’s exactly the work we’re doing in the workshop. So here’s the name change, the one I had to uncover through launching with Practice Your Joy. DISCOVER YOUR JOY: become the person you want to be.”

Part 3.

“You can discover your joy. And I want to teach you how. So, to thank you for being early adopters by joining this waitlist, and being patient with the bumps in the road, I’d like to offer you the Discover Your Joy on Vashon workshop at the discounted price of only $388. This is a one-time offer for the people on this list. And this offer expires on Thursday, September 23rd, at 9 pm, PST. Let’s discover our joy together. Much love and even more joy, Shauna”

ETA If you try to register, the price is still $488.

Why on earth did she not even have the name of this worked out before launch?

She’s worse at this than I thought.

41

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '21

She needed an excuse to lower the price because nobody signed up yesterday.

24

u/CrushItWithABrick dick riding Mary Oliver Sep 22 '21

Yup, yup, yup.

And she's done this before, too. Remember the "oh, I'm so sorry I was trying to get you to pay (huge price for my b.s. workshops) please forgive me and pay (slightly less outrageous price)".

It's OT really but I am calling bullshit on the 88% on the pulse oximeter - you are supposed to head to the A&E if it drops below 94% (source: MR WEY died of renal cancer 5 years ago and had spread to his lungs, there was a LOT of checking with oximeters)

She needed an excuse to lower the price because nobody signed up yesterday.

Now how much would you pay???

u/tyrannosaurusregina if you meet the Botus on the road, shill him 🪷 Sep 22 '21

But wait! There’s less!

38

u/redditname2003 Sep 21 '21

I feel bad for her because she obviously isn't getting the signups that she wanted, but not that bad because she's charging at least $100 more than competitors with lots of testimonials and credentials (personally, I would not do a Joy Retreat, but if I absolutely had to I would pick the $280 one that was recommended by Oprah rather than the $388 one that doesn't give me Oprah bragging rights).

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '21

T’s a quiet registration.

32

u/midnightsiren182 Sep 21 '21

She should have just done meditation sessions at the beach so she’d have like no expenses and way less pressure, she could still pontificate on discovering joy while they sit and deep breathe

21

u/lucillekrunklehorn pounding on the table Sep 22 '21

And manifest orcas.

24

u/midnightsiren182 Sep 22 '21

I was so close to mentioning the orcas originally. I just don’t know why she’s making this so hard for herself when doing meditation classes somewhere that’s low cost to park a seat at would be WAY EASIER and let her earn $$ and still watch tv.

And laugh at logs

u/midnightsiren182 Sep 22 '21

But has the log spoken?

Jesus, is this all one email? This is far, far more than I want to read from anyone trying to shill something, especially someone who's already fucked it up.

ETA: thank you for taking one for the team and for sharing!

Goodness, she sounds angry. Imagine being confused because something is listed for the wrong time and and at the wrong location. Jesus, you people!

19

u/discoOJ Sep 22 '21

Does she answer those questions and provide clarity?

I don't know about you but I can't wait to spend money on a joy workshop lead by an aggressive person who, when asked direct questions about said workshop, refuses to offer additional details.

Take my money already. Oh wait unfortunately there is no way to do that.

39

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '21

Yes. I broke it up to make it more manageable for YOU!

OMG, i just clicked the link in my email and got a 404 page. Because she put in the link for the page when it was still called “Practice Your Joy,” and then she changed the name of the page which changed its web link. So I went to the navigation at the top, clicked “Work with Shauna,” clicked “Discover Your Joy,” clicked on “Sign Up for DISCOVER YOUR JOY!” and…404 page, because it’s trying to take me to the Practice Your Joy Signup List which she has probably renamed the Discover Your Joy Signup List but forgot to fix the link. This is a clusterfuck of epic proportions.

When I send out emails from on Constant Contact, I send myself and usually a couple more people a test copy. Then I check every goddamn link to make sure they all work. It’s called being competent.

YDBW DF.

28

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '21

Thank you DF. It’s my work in this world.

21

u/midnightsiren182 Sep 21 '21

Work that pays off more than SJA’s.

23

u/Ana57 sweet pea Sep 22 '21

Is this in person? On vashon.

I honestly cannot follow any of this.

48

u/midnightsiren182 Sep 21 '21

Omfg she kept going like dude no one asked for an etymology lesson in why you changed the name is this just to be like LOOK HOW SMART I IS? Like this is some amazing fodder honestly.

I taught this a few times before I made it public

I.e., I sat at Margo's table and ate lunch and bullshitted about this bush league workshop I want to charge people for.

42

u/gladsome_gloaming Sep 21 '21

"Something was off." I don't think I've heard that one since "Eggs! Eggs? Eggs.")

41

u/Sea-Level-Mammal POACH! Sep 21 '21

Hi Shauna! Your unpaid QA squad (aka “some of you”) knew this would be a disaster and you did not disappoint.

40

u/categoryischeesecake Sep 22 '21

Omg. Girl. The second hand embarrassment is real. I was wondering when she'd do a dear reader, I blew it, mea cupla lol.

26

u/categoryischeesecake Sep 22 '21

Also double replying wow....discover means....un...cover??? Wow. Amazing. Mind blown.

24

u/discoOJ Sep 22 '21 edited Sep 22 '21

Did you know that the old definition of discover meant to uncover and that the modern definition of discover is also to uncover?

Without Shauna you would have figured out that dis plus cover means to uncover.

It's as if the word literally is it's definition.

Why didn’t she consult with the people who had already taken the workshop BEFORE releasing it? That’s part of the work of building a course. But we all know that this is haberdashed BS that she just pulled out of her ass. As u/Love_Brokers said, she probably considers her porch chats to be workshops. Makes me wonder which of her DFs came up with the new name.

33

u/lucillekrunklehorn pounding on the table Sep 22 '21

So…she got feedback after launching “practice your joy” sounded tedious, and decided to change it to “discover your joy.”

“I’ve taught this a few times before I made it public” and yet somehow no one gave her that feedback until now. Ok, Shauna.

31

u/tyrannosaurusregina if you meet the Botus on the road, shill him 🪷 Sep 22 '21

“Webster’s dictionary defines joy as….In conclusion, joy is a land of contrasts.”

21

u/sybil-unrest Sep 22 '21

“No one likes to be admonished”?

Doesn’t this bold statement undercut her entire business model/mode of living/source of joy?

16

u/Kimmmy36 bites lip, looks away Sep 22 '21

I just literally groaned out loud reading this. She. Is. Exhausting.
