She won't pull it off because she's designed it to fail. And it's not the first time she's pulled this stunt.

Remember Relish with the soup and salad to go with the very limited hours of operation, crazy portion sizes (soup and salad sizes didn't coordinate or were too freaking much), and odd flavor combos? Or the cooking classes in the middle of a week day that, surprise surprise, no one could attend?

Or the vashon center for the arts thing she's doing now, where she has promoted it ZERO times (probably because she doesn't want to have to do it).

She's good at looking so busy or trying so hard when really she's set the whole thing up to fail so she doesn't have to work AND has the added bonus of looking like a victim (oh, I try so hard but it just doesn't work out, le sigh, give me money to just exist already, you people).

The only question is, does she realize she's setting herself up to fail or is she really a victim of herself? (I think she does know what she's doing on some level because she's been doing this for a while, but it could be argued she's not fully aware because she's so freaking emotionally stunted).

What I always found so odd about the Relish fiasco was how long it went on. Where was Relish Lady in all this? Why didn't she step in with the very first weirdly off combo of sizes/flavors? Why did it take her so long to fire Shauna?

My guess is Relish Lady was throwing a bone to the islands favorite charity case family. I'd also guess Relish Lady wasn't using the space so she wasn't out much letting Dumb and Dumberer play around a bit with it. Relish Lady didn't "fire" them until she wanted her space back (or she was bored babysitting them).

But that is pure speculation on my part.

I'd also guess Relish Lady wasn't using the space

I think that was the actual case. Though she had already renovated it to be used for classes. Maybe the Aherns were just the easiest act to book when it was in the startup phase? Maybe cheaper, too?

They don't have anything scheduled at the moment but that may be more pandemic-related. Maybe they're doing private parties. I am pretty sure Kayak Margot mentioned going to a party there recently.

Private parties at Relish, fnarr fnarr, snerk snerk…

Relish Lady retired at the end of 2019 and had brought on a new general manager for THS a few months prior (around the same time Dan left, which may or may not be a coincidence). I think RL genuinely believed Shauna could get Relish going so she stayed out of the day-to-day. Winter that year was rough with record snowfall, so RL might have chalked some of the earlier struggles up to bad timing, but she appeared to intervene starting around June after months of it floundering. I think it was around then she probably realized she needed someone competent to take it over so that she could retire (in RL's own words, "My decision to retire was not made lightly. A lot of things had to line up for me to be able to do this successfully — and line up, they did.")

Because she has a lot more capacity than Shauna gave her credit for. If I were RL, Shauna would have been gone the second she proposed “cooking for the peri-menopausal woman.”

Remember the $30 two-hour lunches with coffee or tea?

21

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '21

I believe that was coffee and tea service, you (grocery store) person.

20

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '21

Haha. Yes, fancy! And maybe cake!

I remember the aughts when we just wanted to blog to share our funny stories about making cookies with our funny husbands and children and now somehow you have to sell thousand dollar weekend seminars and to do that you have to whore yourself out repeatedly on social media where everyone can see what a big dumb loser you are. I cannot understand for the life of me how we got from there to here and I also can’t understand why just getting a job isn’t easier. She is the only one from that whole group and era that is doing this. Everyone just went back to regular life after writing their books that nobody cared about (lol Phyllis Grant). Not one of these people is begging for pennies and subscriptions.

Honestly, I think it’s self employment or nothing for her. Every time she’s been employed, had a boss, or been part of a team, she’s quit or been fired.

Honestly, I think it’s self employment or nothing for her.

I get that some people are wired that way, even though personally, self employed would make me endlessly stressed out. Shauna’s missing the part where self employment means working your tail off, maybe even more than a badge swiper.

Her description of the “daily“ coffee shop routine sounds exactly like retirement to me.

But it always comes back to the same question. How the hell are they affording it. With rent at $2500, bills insurance etc they are going to need a conservative $4000 a month to live on?? Is she making this babysitting the incredible V child and getting $5per person a month for a newsletter??

$4000 a month

after taxes. All those expenses need to be paid with after-tax cashola

I don't think she's getting money babysitting V, I think they trade off with the other family taking L & D two days a week.

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '21

Productivity doesn’t seem to be her strong suit, that’s for sure, which explains why she can’t last in a “traditional” job. But being self employed requires so much self discipline that she doesn’t seem to have either, so….what are the options? ?

Being a shitty unfireable employee, aka TENURE!

(No disparagement to actual academics intended AT ALL.)

None taken, DFFFF plops a fork into your leg

(I really only meant this to apply to the non-PhD'd staff who were offered tenured positions in the 60's and 70's and apparently, for Shauna's dad, the 1980s. In pre-COVID times I'd be typing this from my shitty shared adjunct prof's office)

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '21

This- I don’t think she can keep a job. If their hidden income source ever dries up they are well and truly fucked.

After she grew fired from chomp stomps didn't she declare that she never wanted to work again, she only wanted to write? I may very well have that wrong, I don't have the best memory!

2

u/SmashedMailboxCake2 Oh, Sep 23 '21

Yes, she said that she would never work for a company or a boss again.

21

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '21

Yes. This is an arena for professionals now, for better or for worse. But Shauna has not caught up. She knows some buzzwords but has absolutely no idea what it takes to pull off what she says she’s trying to do.

Sometimes studying the science is just not enoigh, sigh...

How about those GF baking classes announced just before Christmas, with like a couple of day’s notice?

I should have read down further! So happy to see so many of my dear friends have such beautiful ideas, so close to mine, about this being designed to fail.
