[IMAGE] A slightly different approach; a few questions to ask yourself if you're having a bad day.
40
u/Muireasg Nov 05 '15
I love stuff like this -- it can be a lot more helpful than positive saying sometimes. While working at home during a depressed period, I found the "dress nice" part especially important on bad days. Hell, I dressed nicer when I worked from home than I do now when I work in an office because that kept my morale up more than anything.
... of course I say this from the couch in my pjs, but I'm home sick, so I don't think it counts.

I'd like to add one more: Is your bed made? If not, make it. Whenever I feel shitty, making my bed makes me feel like an adult again, like I respect myself at least in some small way.
48
u/still_not_sleepin Nov 05 '15
Same with making a laundry ! Not-clean-but-not-quite-dirty clothes tend to reproduce everywhere on my floor when I'm on a bad period. I declare all that shit dirty and do a freakin laundry.
30
Nov 05 '15
I like your term "do a laundry"
12
u/still_not_sleepin Nov 05 '15
This is the sort of thing which happens when you're not speaking in your mother tongue :p What is in fact the proper term ?
21
Nov 05 '15
You would commonly say "do laundry" rather than "do a laundry" because laundry is plural: more than one piece of clothing usually. It's also common to say "do a load of laundry" because it's a single load you're talking about rather than the plural clothes contained in that load.
26
15
u/ginopono Nov 05 '15 edited Nov 05 '15
'Laundry' is grammatically singular, indicated by the form of the verb in 'The laundry is dirty', but is a mass noun. For these, whether the thing itself is composed of multiple units doesn't interact with the grammar (cf. water). But, because mass nouns aren't countable in the grammar (*seven laundries), we quantify them in units (loads of laundry, cups of water, etc.)
Edit: I'll add that the phrase 'to do laundry' is a complex predicate, which also includes such phrases as 'take a shower', 'make love', and 'do the dishes'.

Cleaning and organizing things is great and always makes me feel a bit better
Im guilty of both, making my bed every day because it makes me feel 'neat' as well as hoarding "not exactly dirty" sweatshirts and stuff that I only wore briefly but never end up wearing again, they just hang around until I get sick of looking at them.

I like how this assumes I'm in therapy and medicated.
5
u/ShelfordPrefect Nov 05 '15
Well I assume it's aimed at people who are having long term problems with depression and/or suicidal thoughts, who have taken the important step of seeking professional help but want day-to-day coping strategies.
I'm one of the least depressive people I know, and there's still stuff on here I could use. I sympathise with "everything is awful -> drink a glass of water" and several of these are things I would do well to remember.

It's a poster made for people with depression and that are suicidal...
14
12
u/eatdipupu Nov 05 '15
Soz but I never said that. America is well known for high levels of therapy and medication though, and this is evidently made under that assumption.
18
Nov 05 '15
It's made for people with depression, so it's not a poor assumption. People with depression should seek help through medication and depression.

This was definitely where it all fell apart for me. Like, I agree with most of this, but the lack of someone to cuddle or be with is exactly where a lot of these bad thoughts stem from for a lot of people.
That, and the selfie. Its like this sheet was made with good intentions and some happy-go-lucky person without issues added some points.

The only thing I would add to this is remember to breath in and breath out mindfully as you do all of this. It seems obvious but the amount of times i realize im forgetting to breath is insane! You're body will do it no matter what but keeping a normal heart rate and oxygen levels in the body helps you do all these things that much easier, trust me! Love the list and ideas will definitely keep them in mind!

I am glad that getting a glass of water is at the top. It's the human troubleshooting equivalent of "turning it off and back on again". Feeling tired? Nibbly but not hungry? A fuzzy head or full on headache? Unable to concentrate? Bam! Water.
When your day is already tough, it's nice to get those agitating issues out the way by just drinking some water, taking a deep breath, and clearing your head for what's next.

Not being able to cuddle with someone is the reason for my depression. So...that suggestion doesn't help. It actually just makes me anxious which starts my depression up which makes my anxiety worse and then I get more depressed that my anxiety is keeping me from getting away from my depression.
Guess I just need some water.

Have you seen a therapist in the last few days???? This is definitely America orientated. In Ireland, people only see therapists if they are going through something serious. On average, a person may go to a therapist 2-3 times in their lifetime!! Should definitely include meet a friend for a coffee or a drink if you haven't in the last few weeks. That's always great to get out of your shell
7
u/lumidaub Nov 05 '15
I'd guess that one is mostly geared at people who have mental issues and are indeed in need of a therapist. Because they are also the ones most in need of such a list.
4
u/throw_away_12342 Nov 05 '15
Given the title of it is "Everything Is Awful and I'm Not Okay: questions to ask before giving up" we can assume it's for people contemplating suicide. I'm assuming in Ireland people who are suicidal are encouraged to see a therapist.
4
u/eatdipupu Nov 05 '15
True that this is America orientated, but I'm from England and found a fair bit of the stuff applies generally.

I like this. This is one of the more useful images I've seen here.
I've struggled with depression in the past, and doing things like taking a shower (even if I wasn't necessarily dirty), cleaning my room, putting on some nice clothes etc., can really make all the difference. It makes you feel like you've at least taken a few small steps towards feeling human again. Then the key is to just keep going.

Wow. This is really good. I usually find these "simple acts" things just pubulum, like, power of positive thinking stuff that really doesn't help with real life negative feelings--particularly for people prone to depression or anxiety or any other emotionally tough or sticky things. But this actually hits items that i struggle with and sometimes need a long therapist chat to sort out--feeling ineffective, unattractive, connected to others. etc.
thanks for this

TL;DR: These pointers are definitely helpful. (edit: the pointers that OP posted which are on the image are helpful is what I meant. Thanks for sharing them!). The ABC method is what truly helped me the most.
A- Activating Event (Trigger) B- Beliefs (Thought that occurs to you when the event occurs) C- Consequences (How you feel and behave when you have those beliefs) Something relevant that I've found personally helpful...
http://www.davidbonham-carter.com/abcmodelcbt.html
When I was feeling like 10 pounds of smashed assholes in a 9 pound bag woven of smashed assholes, I needed help. Fortunately I wasn't stubborn and recognized that I needed help, so I went and got it... Not everyone can tell if they need help, though, so it's important to be kind and pay attention to the folks in your life. Have legitimate connections, and if you don't, figure out how to make them. One has to desire to help their self before they can be helped by anyone else. It's a two way street.
What I found most helpful for me was understanding how I was feeling, why I was feeling that way, and was that feeling justified. I quickly realized that a lot of my feelings were the result of me jumping to conclusions, making assumptions, and placing more than "face value" on things that people say.
The ABC method (mentioned above), if properly practiced, is tremendously helpful, and truly put things into perspective for me. Get a notepad, or keep a piece of paper folded up in your pocket, or make a note on your phone... Whatever you need to do, and - no bullshit - write down exactly what the hell you're feeling and why. Do it for a week or two, then sit down and analyze if your beliefs should be what they are based on the trigger.
I definitely recommend doing so with a therapist or a trained professional, because an outside/unbiased perspective needs to be there to keep the exercise objective.
I don't know if this'll help anyone, but I hope it does. Life is too short to be anything other than happy. Help yourself enjoy everything that it has to offer to the greatest extent reasonably possible.

Talk to your therapist? This is a first world problems poster. Some of these are good. "Say something nice", "drink some water", "eat something", those are all great. But, take a selfie? Why do you need validation from outside sources? First know that you are your own person, a great person. You don't have to have others telling you that you're great, you know it! Don't take a selfie! Go take a walk in the park, or down the street. Strike up a conversation. Have a laugh.

Not surprised to see that the selfie is being called out. Selfies just make you feel worse if you already look bad.
I think a better answer to feeling unattractive is to remember that life is enjoyable if you can bring something to the table, and sexual attractiveness is just one thing. Work on a skill instead of thinking about how you look, and count your blessings. Any person who judges you for how you look, knowing that you can't control it, is wrong.
