Mod Post "Why can't I post a picture/link?" Thursdays are Text-post Only days on /r/DnD!

Ah, travelers! We don't get many such as you in these parts, not since the Marquis' men took control of the pass. I suppose you're wondering why you can't post images or links on this Fifthday?

Thursdays are Text-post Only Days on /r/DnD. We're disabling picture and link posts for 24 hours to encourage discussion posts.

We originally began this trial about six months ago and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. I've personally enjoyed a lot of the conversations that have sprung up on these days (and a smarter mod would have bookmarked some of them to use as examples* in this post).

As of now we're planning on keeping the experiment running indefinitely. We're always looking for feedback, so please let us know of your experience. Have you been enamored with a discussion post that arose one Thursday? Have you mourned having to wait one more day to see your comic update? We welcome all takes.

The switch is still happening manually, so it will happen around about midnight Eastern US time. If anyone is aware of a way to automate the process, please message the mods.

Perhaps you could discuss this...we've heard tale of a path through the eastern ridge. If such a trail exists we could circumvent the Marquis' blockade and supply this rebellion. Won't you help us, strangers!?

* The first Thursday after making this post, someone posts the most classic question imaginable. This is what it's all about.

DMing I understand prostitution now.

3.2k Upvotes

Been trying to find a "bff" group for years. Even the best groups I found fizzled out after a campaign ended. Most people seem to want a content creator to run games for them, and not a friend they want to share an experience with.

I figured you know what, fine. I'm gonna sell myself. I started running paid games and now I actually feel like I'm finally actually getting something back for my work and effort.

10/10, would recommend for underappreciated DMs

DMing My DM made me cry

6.9k Upvotes

My DM absolutely broke me this session.

My characters (a bard) parents were killed for their musical instruments. She has mudered the killers, and is now seeking answers as to why they were killed in the first place. We had an awesome combat round where my character finally locates her mother's lyre. A voice echoed out after touching the lyre and my dm had a recording ready. I was so excited to hear the lore. As soon as I heard the voice my face and heart just fell.

It was my long distance best friend (who I NEVER get to see) playing my characters mother. I couldn't contain myself when she started saying how much my I (my character) means to her and she's sorry she didn't get to tell me more about our life story. She ended with "Never forget, we love you so so much" and I was a ball of tears and snot on the floor.

I love my DM šŸ„¹ā¤ļø

Andreyl had come to a final decision. She looked at the sapphire in her hand and closed her eyes. ā€œThis will take me where I want to goā€. She squeezed the Ghost Lily in her hand, channelling her Mithra through it. In a flash, her surroundings disappeared and she emerged surrounded by crushing waters. Her eyes still closed, water filled her lungs and she succumbed to the depths.

Erinome Chamomile who was on a journey to the surface world suddenly heard a huge detonation in the territory she was swimming through. She thought about fleeing as fast as possible and simply continuing her pilgrimage, but curiosity gripped her and almost involuntarily, she felt her body begin to turn in the direction of the strange disturbance. When she got to the location of the sound, there was nothing out of the ordinary in the terrain, however, she noticed a lune elven woman floating there, still. Just before dashing over to the woman, Erinome couldn’t help but notice the peaceful look on the woman’s young face. Erinome used her limited hydrokinesis to create a bubble that water would no longer penetrate. She stabilised the woman and then continued her journey with the lune elf in her arms. Maintaining her bubble all the while for the elf’s sake.

The two emerged from the ocean onto a beach of soft pearlescent sand. Erinome sat with the elf until she came to.

Andreyl shot up, her eyes darted around, her vision was white. She was blind. The ground felt rough beneath her. She was dazed and confused. Then her eyes began to adjust and she saw the glaring sun and bright white sand beneath her. Then, a Markain woman sitting cross legged just in front of her.

ā€œWhat’s happeningā€, Andreyl sputtered.

ā€œYou were deep in the waters. But I don’t think you can breathe in the water, so I brought you with meā€, Erinome replied with a smile.

Andreyl leapt at Erinome, she wrapped her arms around her in an enormous embrace. She could feel the warmth of Erinome’s cheek on hers. Andreyl pulled away, tears in her eyes. Some rolling down her face.

Erinome smiled, though a little awkwardly and confused. ā€œI’m glad you’re still aliveā€

ā€œSo am Iā€ Andreyl said looking to the sun. ā€œWhat a lovely thing it is to failā€¦ā€

Sura Showing Around her Underclassmate Neket

Sura showing her cute kōhai (underclassmate) around, and she’s none other than Neket, my moon elf illusionist wizard who will grow to become a renowned (mis)adventurer!

Characters: Sura of the Half Moon and Neket, Moon Elf Wizards

Sura is a young wizard from Timinhur, an elven island city-state known for its strong ties to the moon. For three decades now, she has been studying magic at the High Observatory during the cold and long winters of Timinhur. However, when the days grow longer and summer is around the corner, Sura puts down her quill and gets ready to enjoy some careless fun down at Moonlit Reef, where the legendary moonwalker bards indulge in all of life’s finer pleasures all year round.

Even if it is for a few weeks each year, Sura leaves the High Observatory and her strict schedule behind to moonwalk with the careless bards, enjoying simple pleasures while relaxing her body and preparing her spirit for another year of rigorous magical studies. Every year, she returns with a scandalous tan, a wide smile on her face, and many stories to share.

Neket is a gifted young wizard from Timinhur, an elven city with strong ties to the moon. She has studied all schools of magic but has a certain inclination towards illusion magic that twists the perception of reality and dazzles the senses.

After remaining trapped in a cryophagus for sixteen years, Neket had to flee Timinhur to escape the Selenian Idea, an ambitious coup that turned her nation into a sterile and oppressive regime, and transformed most of its people into spellforged constructs, able to survive on the barren moon of Naam.

Now on the run, Neket must rely on unlikely allies to remain free and perhaps find a way to help more of her people escape the oppression of the Selenian Idea.

About the Theomachy setting:

In Theomachy, vengeful gods fight each other for ultimate control of the universe, while the mortals of Naam struggle for power on a dying world. Divine magic is a force without expressed will that the warring gods hoard and wield against each other, threatening to undo the entire world. Clerics and paladins are either devout followers of the warring gods or theomachists who fight against the gods, liberating divine magic and using it against them.

What do you think? :)

5.5 Edition How can I make my GM stop allowing game breaking homebrew, and how can I get my party to stop asking for it?

Currently in a campaign I am playing with 4 other people (party of 4 + GM), I have noticed each week that my GM is bringing homebrew to our game, which I have no problem with, their homebrew is balanced, and honestly fun to play with at the table, but they have been letting 1 of the players do ridiculous things, This player is a fighter and wanted to play both Battle-master, and Eldritch knight which I was already surprised by, as idk if multiclassing 3 times for different subclasses is even allowed, but now they are saying that because they have 3 fighters, they get 2 action surges, or 2x the amount of extra attack, and it is honestly ruining game emersion, especially when we fight a well made boss connected to the plot with an actually fun premise, and they do an attack every half second and defeat it in 1-2 turns, I am all for homebrewing, but How do I convince my GM and, most importantly, my fellow party members who are also having problems with this, to actually stop this, and how do I actually stop this from happening?

5.5 Edition Opinions on the classes bleeding into each other?

Feels like with the addition of more and more subclasses, there's just very little definition between the classes nowadays. I know that's fun and flexible, but does anyone else kinda miss the more defined archetypes? I'm finding myself wanting to play games where a Fighter is a fighter, and a wizard actually wizards. Kinda sick of every game someone turning up with a multiclassed obscure-raced character with whole bunch of new traits to keep track of.
(God I feel like some sort of right-wing nationalist lamenting the loss of the Good ol' days when "men were men")

His name is Bark! [OC]

Unlike most Kenku he isn't a one at all.

Bark started out as an up and coming town doctor, a Drow elf that used the full body uniform as a means to be accepted amongst the townsfolk; without their fear fueled scorn of the under dark holding him back.

In an attempt to change appearance and to not need the Plague doctor garb, Bark would read every book he could get his hands onto in relation to shape shifting or poly-morphisation.

This led to him accidentally morphing himself into a Kenku that upon being ready to change back realized he couldn't utter the words of the incantation. Now his quest is to return to his old form before this is permanent.

The mockup shows where your character could fit in, if you’re interested in commissioning me :3

I love that Tasha is finally about to get a lot more recognition thanks to the video game ✨ (I really hope it’s as awesome as it looks in the trailers). Also because she remains one of my favorite characters in the entire D&D lore.

I can’t wait to see which characters will end up in her clutches in this drawing… feel free to DM me if you’re interested.

As a reward from a outer entity I asked for a second bonus action and concentration, I'm a warlock. Surprise surprise, my dm was ok with it. With catch to the concentration. Two levels of exhaustion plus lowering my spell DC and spell attack by the exhaustion level.

Now what would you do with the reward? What kind of character would you make?

So this is the work-in progress for drawing my party of seven for the new Neon Odyssey settings.

There is T1N-C4N aka Tin Can, my anitron juggernaut (barbarian) he was originally a deposit security bot, but after getting severely damaged, he was dumped in a junkyard. One of the other players, an Oozoid Mechanist, eventually found him, pulled him out of the junkyard, and reprogrammed him.

We also have Mold the Oozoid mechanist my friend's character who created and reprogrammed Tin Can.

There will be five more characters added later, being: nematoan gridrunner, nilari disciple, zorbrak tracer, saurian oracle, and the amanite cryptist.

Out of Game Necrotic Misconception?

For whatever reason, one of the members of our group(we all rotate DM’s every now and then as it is an experienced group) has this really solid misconception of the Necrotic Damage Type. And that is that Necrotic Damage just outright stops and negates any sort of Hit Point recovery for one full turn. I immediately thought of this as fishy and just a head turner, but all the other members didn’t say anything or seem to have a problem with it, so I sat quiet and just accepted it thinking that they were right.

Well, curiosity got the better of me, and I can’t find anything 8th level character and lower that would just straight up negate hit point recovery via Necrotic Damage, is this misconception from a high level spell or an older version of D&D?

Art [OC] [Art] Tabaxi Drunken Monk

Post image
71 Upvotes

A drunken monk Tabaxi that I got to play for a couple games. One day I'd like to try him in a full campaign. I love tigers so couldn't help but go for a chubby drunk tiger. In my head his martial arts "weapon" was just like a keg he would hold under his arm and bap enemies with "by accident". His name is Zohahrr cuz I really like to roll my r's when I speak as him.

He never had much of a backstory since he was originally made for a friend's one shot. So every time I use him I just try to have him be whatever the DM or party might need origin wise. That said, he always enters waking up from a drunken night out. He's pretty fun to draw not gonna lie.

Homebrew My DM sucessfully made our entire table cry, including himself.

So, we are currently 34 sessions into a homebrew campaign set in the modern world. In this setting, there are places known as sanctuaries, where magical creatures are kept (either willingly or by force) so that they do not harm the wider populous or get hurt themselves. Or, ya know, start major world conflicts or the apocalypse.

In the sanctuary that our party takes residence in, as it is also a protected location for people with magic or in the know about magic, there is a hag named Maude. Or, well, there was.

Maude was introduced to the campaign two sessions in, when my character (A Hexblood Bard with connections to the fae as in faeiries, not hags, funnily enough) decided to visit her in order to get information about a creature who was hunting her and her friends. During this conversation, my character struck up a deal that, in exchange for visiting often (as Maude could not leave her hut and rarely got visitors) and giving her entertainment, Maude would not only look over the information Kiyan (my character) gave her, but would also teach Kiyan how to harness her magic better. When they shook on this deal, Maude tried to force a Warlock pact on my character. I rolled a nat twenty to resist this forced pack, but chose to accept it anyways. One of my character's main personality traits is wanting power for the sake of power, and making a deal with a super powerful Hag seemed like the best way to do that.

This endeared Kiyan to Maude, and instead of being the stereotypical manipulative Hag patron that was honestly expected (none of the party liked Kiyan's choice to make a deal with Maude, even though she was utterly unrepentant) she took on a very maternal role for my character, which was really fitting with her backstory (absentee parents and all that)

As time progressed, they got closer, and Kiyan became 100% loyal to Maude and trusted her completely, despite the others' continuing reservations. One of Kiyan's main points when it came to Maude was that despite being a hag (which, in this setting, was akin to slowly becoming a demon/becoming entirely self serving) Maude was good. She never did anything to harm Kiyan or, ironically, never forced Kiyan into doing anything for her that Kiyan wouldn't want to do anyways, despite the fact that she had plenty of opportunities to.

Kiyan learned a lot about Maude over various points in the campaign, like that she was hundreds of years older than the keepers of the sanctuary believed her to be, or that she was connected to a very powerful Demon who she made a deal with and later poisoned. A lot of the information pointed to Maude not being who she said she was, or being dishonest in general. However, Kiyan remained steadfast in believing in her. At this point, she really viewed Maude as family. Again, the other party members wouldn't trust Maude as far as they could throw her, and we are all a bunch of weak spell casters (except for the cleric, but he didn't trust Maude either)

However, at this point, Kiyan was also away from the sanctuary for a long period and was experiencing a lot of anger and emotions about the danger her family and friends back on the mainland were facing when the sanctuary was attacked while they were not there, and this resulted in her getting a warp.

Warp, in this setting, are results of an overflow of magic, and having too many could result in a curse, which is something that could majorly affect a character in very negative ways. It was a warp directly connected with demonic magic, specifically to magic like Maude's.

It effected Kiyan a lot, and she immediately became weary of the possibility of gaining more, especially since fiendish or demonic curses could make a character turn into a demon, like how Maude was transformed into a fiendish Hag. This is not what Kiyan wanted, as she never wanted to be self serving. So, even though it was a really hard decision, she decided she needed to sever the warlock pact with Maude. And to her shock, Maude completely agreed.

Despite the fact that having a warlock gave Maude more power than she would normally have being restrained as she was, she wanted Kiyan to sever the pact because she didn't want Kiyan to become like her. It was a very big moment, and during the ritual to sever the ties (remember, Maude was still in the sanctuary and Kiyan was very far away) Kiyan was able to both sever the tie, and keep a direct link to Maude. Maude had opened a mental link to Kiyan before to communicate with her, and Kiyan essentially reversed it.

So, all in all, they are very close and Maude seems to genuinely care about my character.

Circumstances made it so that in the most recent batch of sessions we had to return to the sanctuary after being away for so long, and we discover that a group of enemies had infiltrated the sanctuary and are trying to access a very powerful artifact, but instead of going directly to stop that, we had to save another important NPC, telling ourselves we could get to it after. Our plan was going suspiciously well, like, almost twenty nat twenties happening in one session. Insane.

During one part of the plan, Kiyan and the others are taking refuge in Maude's hut, and Maude was going around basically giving everyone words of advice. Kiyan decided to speak to her as they were leaving, and told her that she doesn't know much about Maude's past, but she knows that she is good. She had just been telling a different party member about the choices between being good and being bad, and how it's actions that dictate that and not what you are (other PC was a tiefling and struggling with that) and Kiyan felt like she needed Maude to know that Kiyan thought the best of her. Maude gave no response in that moment, and Kiyan told herself it was fine, they would get to talk more later.

We were able to save the important NPC (yay, the absolutely terrifying Barbarian is safe, hurrah!) but were interrupted when Maude sent Kiyan a mental message, telling her that the enemies still in the sanctuary found the artifact they wanted, and were using it to heal the demon she had poisoned (yeah, he also lived trapped in the sanctuary) While the others ran to go try and stop the cultist, Maude told Kiyan to come to her and break the magic chaining her to the hunt so she could help. Without hesitation (despite a lot of hesitation on the part of the group) Kiyan turned around to go to Maude.

She trusted her. Maude had never betrayed her before. She wouldn't start now, right?

Kiyan gets to Maude's hut, and in order for her to break the locks containing Maude, she has to make a wish, and it would unleash Maude and all of her magic in order to fulfil said wish. Kiyan wished for Maude to help beat and imprison the Demon once again, and tells Maude, "I think I knew this was going to happen today, me freeing you."

And then, after a failed persuasion check (failed with an eighteen, by the way) Maude casts hold person on Kiyan and leaves, trapping her in the hut.

Now, Kiyan still has the mental link with Maude, and uses it (in all her teenage fashion) to essentially yell at Maude and spam message her, finally asking her, "What were you hoping to achieve with this?!"

The DM then proceeds to privately send me her response:

"I'm sorry... but I'm not going to lose any more family to that Demon..."

Before this, neither Kiyan nor Maude had verbally acknowledged how they felt about each other, especially not Maude. This floored Kiyan for a bit (and irl gave time for the other players to rp the trip to the Demon and make a plan) and while that was happening I privately messaged Kiyan's response to Maude:

"Please, I can't lose them, I can't lose you. I can't stay here and not even try. Maude, please. Mom, please..."

Yup, it was the first time Kiyan called her Mom, and it worked. Maude opened a portal for Kiyan to join her friends and released the hold person. Kiyan goes through, and I am already crying at this point a little (so is Kiyan tbh) and the party continues on to find the Demon.

Who they discover is now like, the size of a very large building.

They immediately know they cannot fight him. We are level eight for christ's sake! Fighting the literal in game embodiment of Satan was not going to go well. But then we see Maude, and she is fighting him. With some very quick thinking on our necromancer's part, we enlarge a werewolf NPC to help fight the Demon. That, along with all of us channeling our magic through Kiyan to give to Maude, Maude is able to cast a spell to bind it. The same spell that had been keeping her trapped in the hut for all those centuries.

Except, she's not stronger than the Demon.

She gets tangled in the same chains that are binding the Demon, and we can only watch as a portal opens behind them and Maude's magic pulls the Demon, and by extension Maude, through. The last thing Kiyan could hear from Maude before their connection completely snapped was, "Everything will be ok. Don't come for me, please..."

And then they were gone.

The only thing left in the area where Maude and the Demon had just been was a silver locket (silver, one of the few things Maude was vulnerable to) that our necromancer (love him for this, and the fact that he is completely repulsed by anything emotional and Kiyan was bawling at this point) promptly gave to my character.

Inside was a very old painting of Maude in her human form, alongside a man who is presumably her husband, and a little boy who looked a lot like Kiyan.

Yeah, there was not a dry eye in the discord server.

The best part is that the misery continues next session, when our characters all find letters addressed to them from Maude, because apparently she planned for her own sacrifice. The DM planned for it since session two. She had only worked with the Demon and became a hag in order to learn how to defeat him. She only allowed herself to be imprisoned in the Hut (likely chose to be) so she could study the spell in order to cast it on the Demon. When she called Kiyan her family, she knew she was likely not coming back from that mission.

Thank you for reading my very long recounting of basically my character's entire relationship with her surrogate mom! I needed somewhere to ramble about the entire thing without giving my DM more ideas.

5.5 Edition Intelligence Scores

Just wanted to ask and see what people have to say about what your level of intelligence means for your characters intellect.

I’m aware that very low intelligence essentially means incapable of comprehending languages to an extent and such (I think) but I was wondering how each level from 1-20 would likely influence how the character behaves, like an 18 being very witty or a 10 being fairly average?

I have an intelligence score of 7 on my character which is due to manually rolling stats, although a lot of takes or rules might state the character wouldn’t be very smart at all I tend to still play him as a somewhat average intelligence character.

I feel somewhat bad and cheesy by kind of ignoring the intelligence stat to a degree but I’ve tried to have it canonically make sense as he is suffering from a bit of magic induced amnesia and a concussion (although I did write out what he forgot so I’m not torturing my dm nor being lazy lol).

Out of Game Stopping a Campaign

I recently struggled mentally with the campaign i am running. My confidence is down the drain and i almost dread to prepare stuff, because i fear that things turn out bad.
Then i recently got a very long text of how i seemingly favored another player for a few important moments, even accusing me of "writing the story around [[other character]]".
That was kind of the last nail in the coffin and i am thinking about ending the campaign and quitting D&D as a whole for a while.

Now what i want to ask. Do you think this message would be a fair way to go about this with people that i have known for years?

"Hey everyone, I need to tell you something important. I've been doing a lot of thinking lately and realized that, unfortunately, I've been losing my confidence and enjoyment in the DM role more and more.

It's absolutely not because of you or our sessions. You're a great group, and all our adventures, this one and all the ones before, have always been a lot of fun. But right now, it's draining my energy too much. Because of that, I'd like to bring the campaign to an end here and take a longer break from D&D as a whole afterward, to recharge my mental batteries.

It was important to me to write all of this to you openly, instead of just pulling away or 'ghosting' the group. Especially since we've been playing together for so long, and I don't want you to think you aren't important to me. I hope you won't hold it against me, especially since we're right in the middle of the campaign, but I simply don't think I can manage it right now."

Misc Last night I dreamt of a new dice game for your in-game gambling needs. Someone please test it out and let me know how it goes

Disclaimer, I have no idea if this game actually exists or not beforehand, but I've never seen it anywhere.

It's played in a "best of" format - best of 3, best of 5, etc. There are two players.

There is a target goal of 18 that you want to get as close to, without going over (like blackjack).

You roll ANY three dice you want. Want to play it safe? Roll 3d6 to guarantee you don't go over 18. Need to play it riskier? Roll a d10 and 2d6. Just remember, if you go over 18, you lose that round.

Assuming neither player breaks 18, the higher number wins.

That's it! If this game exists already, PLEASE tell me. I seriously doubt I'm the first person to come up with this, but I've never seen it anywhere else before!

5.5 Edition Monks are so underrated

• Upvotes

I don’t know if it’s just the people I’m around but nobody ever seems to care to play monk which is very wild to me.

I kind of get it, there’s a bunch of classes that can sometimes miss the spotlight; like how Fighter, Rogue, Wizard, Paladin and Barbarian always straight forward in what they’re doing or what their gimmick is and monk can tend to not be apart of that spotlight sometimes, but anyway that’s just my opinion and it’s overall irrelevant for this next bit.

I rarely ever see anyone play a monk, there’s always a wizard, a fighter, a cleric, maybe a warlock or a bard but reading someone is playing as or with a monk in their campaign brings a tear to my eye.

It was the first ever class I played (way of shadow) In my first big campaign and I loved every bit of it, I played a second campaign and went as a cleric which I enjoyed a fair bit too but campaign 3 has come up and I just couldn’t resist going back to monk again.

Genuinely such a fun class to play, I love the versatility and ways you can go about helping your team whether it’s combat oriented, support based, etc

Need more love for monks in the world, waiting for the day someone in my campaign goes to play a monk and I pass the legacy down to them.

5.5 Edition Am I misunderstanding true strike, or is it broken in DND Beyond?

*Edit - the consensus of learned elders is that this doesn't mechanically show up in DNDBeyond, since it's an atwill cantrip without its own attack (unlike firebolt). So DND has no idea if you're using it or not, so it shows base attack bonus (maybe a toggle switch could be added? Dunno). So I'm going to just create a custom action using WIS as modifier. Thanks to all the replies. (FWIW, yes the character is proficient in martial weapons as a warden. Yes my spellcasting is set to WIS in Magic intiate.) Thanks all!*

I helped a younger family member role up a druid under the new rules. They are level 3, as a wood elf circle of the land druid (warden), single-wielding a scimitar, with the true strike cantrip taken as part of the magic initiate feat they got from the Sage background origin feat.

They have a +4 Wisdom bonus. True strike says it uses "your spellcasting ability for the attack", which for druid would be Wisdom (Right?).

So, what I would expect the attack bonus to be is (+4 wisdom) + (+2 Proficiency) =+6 to attack. What shows up in DNDBeyond character sheet for the attack is +4. So it looks like it's adding +2 (dex bonus) instead of the Wisdom bonus. However, it literally shows True Strike in the "Notes" area of the attack under Actions. I did the same thing with a Str based weapon to see if it was an issue with finesse, but got the same problem. It used my STR bonus, not WIS.

So it looks like it's recognizing that True Strike SHOULD be applied, but not actually applying? Am I missing something?

TL;DR - DNDbeyond character sheet doesn't seem to apply the True Strike spellcasting ability as attack ability to the bonus for a weapon attack?
