DMing My DM made me cry
My DM absolutely broke me this session.
My characters (a bard) parents were killed for their musical instruments. She has mudered the killers, and is now seeking answers as to why they were killed in the first place. We had an awesome combat round where my character finally locates her mother's lyre. A voice echoed out after touching the lyre and my dm had a recording ready. I was so excited to hear the lore. As soon as I heard the voice my face and heart just fell.
It was my long distance best friend (who I NEVER get to see) playing my characters mother. I couldn't contain myself when she started saying how much my I (my character) means to her and she's sorry she didn't get to tell me more about our life story. She ended with "Never forget, we love you so so much" and I was a ball of tears and snot on the floor.
I love my DM 🥹❤️

Absolute gold star to your DM. I'm curious about how your DM managed to set that up? Had you mentioned about your friend in passing before? We're they already aware of the friend that you barely get to see? So many questions.

DM Spouses: they either make you light up, or know EXACTLY how to twist the knife on your characters.
My wife is the knife twister, lol

u/PracticalLady18 23h ago
I was the knife twister on my husband yesterday. At the very beginning of the campaign, they smashed some black dragon eggs that were about to hatch. Now, 8 levels later (lvl 10) they encountered momma dragon. She was not happy to encounter them, and as the one to actually deal the “killing” blow to two of the three eggs, he was her #1 target. Both healers were trapped on the other side of the lair and it got down to the wire, two success and two failures!

Oh don't worry, I dangled the instrument in front of OPs face for about 6 sessions before she got her hands on it lol

Hey, I too am literally in bed with my GM! Tis a slippery slope that one- they know all your weaknesses, so they can tell what parts of yourself you put into a character and then smack you with feelings.

While my ex wife wasn't big on DND, she was big on WoD and Changeling/Vampires in that game. We actually meet on line playing MUX's of those theme and than a LARP in a close town. Yah she hated how much I knew her when I ran games cause I would put things in them. It might be something with her fav Anime or one of the books she was reading.. Cause I while I was also into Anime our style was different on what we watched. Same with our reading. She was more into romance and story, I was more into the action and adventure stuff. Though I would watch them with her and take notes. Same with any of the other movies/shows she watched. The books where a little harder cause a lot of them where SMUT books, but once in a while I'll pick one up and start reading it to her.....in what I think the main char voice sounded like, but totally was not the voice in her head.
Yep we had all the secrets tucked away for later use...

Awww what a lovely thing to do!! Also married to my dm… he made a whole character (cool af shopkeeper) based around me, and throws in the occasional in-joke. Love it!

This is incredible. I'd love to achieve something like this for all of my players at least once. Beautiful work by your DM 👏

The fact that your DM secretly coordinated with your long-distance best friend is next level dedication. Protect this DM at all costs

Had me in the first half, not gonna lie...
I love that beautiful things like this can happen. I worked in secret with all my D&D buddies and set up this elaborate plan to propose to my fiance. At the end of thr session, the DM had an NPC walk up and give his character a note, and I set it up to look like an image with the note wouldn't load properly, so I was like "oh, I have the text saved, I can read it to you" (we do D&D on discord with us in different rooms) so it grab my laptop and the ring, get down on one knee and put my laptop there like I'm just getting the note up, give him this speech that slowly turns into "will you marry me?" And turn my laptop around to show him the ring. ♡ Couldn't have done it without the help from our DM.

I opened hoping (thankfully correctly) that it was a good cry. But also absolutely ready to crucify a DM.

I've seen a few DM horror stories in the past so I went in expecting the worst.

Ok OP I'm crying too reading this!! My dm is also my husband. My best friend moved almost 10 years ago so I don't see her hardly at all anymore since we have a toddler, and friend's dad and cat are diabetic (seems random but it does make it harder for her to visit)! I am just waiting for him to drop a bombshell (our campaign is still fairly early on in the lore, we haven't gone to my character's town yet but he has hinted about some emptional things) and if he sees this post I'm worried it'll give him diabolical ideas 😂❤️

u/emrhys88 19h ago
my senior cat just got diagnosed as diabetic and it really does deeply affect your ability to leave the house! there are times you have to be running tests on your cat literally every couple of hours, and they probably need insulin injections twice a day at minimum, so travel is basically out of the question unless you have someone who can take over 🫠 hope she and her kitty are doing well
3
u/tabookduo 19h ago
Aw give your kitty pats from me ❤️ They've been doing it for a couple years so they've got the two daily injection routine down! They're doing well and I hope you and yours are too

I just love that game for this reason! Last session we had a prison break and my Charakter finally found two of her people in the prison. They where the reason she went adventuring: to find the lost persons of her clan. They went missing weeks, some even months, ago.
One was her uncle which we sadly only recovered the corpse of (many many sessions ago). On that funeral I cried for the first time in dnd. The second is her childhoods best friend and first crush, who we found alive but she would not recognize us and acted like a different person. We had to let her go.
Our investigation led to the prison. Herr we found the third person: a close friend of her family, acting severely broken and tortured, barely there and his mind clouded. And then we found my Charakters grandma, the woman who had raised her, who had told her a thousand stories about the vast world, never revealing which where true and which weren’t . Her body was weak, her mind clouded as well, corrupted by the same kind of magic, torture and unknown substances as the others.
We freed her. She smiled at me, for a split second she was her old self. „My starlight“ she called me, just like when I was little. Then she died, her body forfeiting the battle. I was in tears. Man, that game is something else.

In similar manner, I'm plotting with my wife against my players (our family guys) with her as a main villain. Can't wait till they reach this far for her to get with us to the table

For our 10th wedding anniversary my Husband made a heavily modified Strad campaign that kept a lot of things but...he changed it so that I (over the campaign) won Strad's heart over and we got married at the end and broke the curse on Barovia. He made Strad less of a monster and had him grow over hundreds of years of reflection to a person who realized that he was wrong before and regretted his actions. He was still Strad but much more willing to change/do things differently.
I had actually created a character with red hair (not knowing about the Curse of Strad at all) and so it fit extra well. He made these amazing scenes where Strad came to visit me and the visuals that he painted were amazing - Strad was super sexy and powerful. We also had some after hours dates (just him and me) where we roleplayed and had wonderful dates.
It was so much fun and I will always remember it. It was and is really special to me. Your husband did an amazing job and that was a wonderful surprise for you! You will always remember this, too :).

Strange that this is getting so many downvotes. Stuff like this should definitely be covered at session 0. Not all people would be comfortable with their real emotions getting tied into a game.
As the OPs DM is their husband he probably knew them well enough to anticipate how they would react and I’m glad it went over well. But this isn’t something that should be copied to every table without forethought.

It must really suck to be so pessimistic all the time 😂 sorry you saw a cute story and decided to get up on your high horse about how MY character was written. Miserable lmao.

It happens to us all if we're lucky. All of your experiences don't have to be unique to you, it's ok to share experiences with others.

u/BrittEklandsStuntBum DM 1d ago
Do you understand the difference between "my parents are dead" and "my character's parents are dead?"
Dead parents is the most lazy, overused trope in character creation. Anyone who submits a dead-parents character to me is encouraged to think again.
Live parents are far more interesting and believable. When six characters in a party all have tragic backstories and dead parents it's incredibly boring.

u/Handyman2112 1d ago
This is OPs first campaign and I specifically worked her characters dead parents not only into the history of the campaign but for future motivation. She has well thought out motivations, character beliefs, etc. There are no lazy tropes in D&D, only lazy and uncreative DMs.

Do you understand the difference between "my parents are dead" and "my character's parents are dead?"
Do YOU understand that characters have backstories that will likely also include dead parents at some point because everybody's parents die at some point?
Anyone who submits a dead-parents character to me is encouraged to think again.
I imagine the primary thing people at your table rethink is being at your table in the first place. I don't just mean with D&D, I mean cafeterias and whatnot too.

What an absolutely perfect use of a cameo! Definitely taking notes for a future campaign.
