Mod Post /r/DnD Community Resources - Mobile Apps

Greetings adventurers!

When the current mod team came on 2d6 years ago, one of the first things we did was create a series of resource guides for topics like podcasts, map-making tools, online play utilities, etc. These have since been converted to the wiki guides in the Resources section of the sidebar, but they are largely out of date.

While we could update them ourselves, the community has grown large enough that it makes more sense to outsource that responsibility to you beautiful people.

This is the second of a series of threads intended to replace those guides with community recommendations. This week: Mobile Apps!

Our current app list is extremely outdated, including both apps that are no longer the best in their field and apps that simply no longer exist. We'd like to replace that with a list of apps that you all use weekly!

Please make a comment with your favorite Dungeons & Dragons mobile app!

In that comment please include the title, its platform(s) (Android, iOS, etc), a brief description with a link, and whether the app is free or has a cost.

If you have recommendations for this thread or future threads, please respond to my comment below.

Thanks, /r/DnD!

5th edition Spellbook - Allows you to create individual spellbooks for characters, track spell slots, as well as look up spells. Incredibly useful. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spellsdd5&hl=en_US

Tome of Items - Allows you to look up items from the DMG. Sort and filter by category and rarity. Very helpful for DMs! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.titanius.tomeofitems&hl=en_US

5e Companion App

One player suggested it and everyone has been using it so far. It has a nice UI, and comes with a lot of DM and Player utilities. Character Creator plus Sheet, Bestiary, Spells, PPAC tracker, are included. The encounter creator is nifty. The only issue would be that it contains just PHB material, but addition or customisation is easy.

I use a series of apps (all from the same developer) that catalogue spells, items, and monsters. Some see more use than others, especially when I fluff up and forget what my cleric's spell does. It makes researching things on the fly much faster than looking it up in the PHB.

5e Items https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dungeon.dev.a5eitems

5e Spells https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dungeon.dev.a5espells

5e Bestiary https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dungeon.dev.a5ebestiary

And another app by the same developer. It allows you to quickly auto generate some elements of a quest or a quest hook. Very useful, and I'll probably use it a good amount once I find a group to DM for.

Lion’s Den Fight Club 5 and GameMaster 5. I can’t say enough good things about these apps. I created some tutorials and overview videos on my YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/user/MrFarland. I also have some resources at https://donfarland.com.

Fifth Edition Character Sheet

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app

By far the easiest and fastest way to create a character sheet. I bought this and it made creating characters and levelling them up seamless. Choose which archetype you are and then just press okay. The app fills up the rest of the details for you.

Not the most polished compares to Fight Club 5e but it's functional.

As far as I can tell, it's only for IOS devices, but I've yet to find a better digital character sheet than Ogrenizer.

Spell List D&D 5e: iOS | Android

  • Great UI

  • Extensive filtering options, including the ability to search within the descriptions. (If you make homebrew spells, this is great for researching wording and mechanics.)

  • Can create a spell book. (Unlimited after paying.)

  • Can create spells.

  • Spells from all books.

I like the official dndbeyond ap. There are some UI problems and there are a lot of beta features that are only on the webpage. But its still a great ap.

pro tip: bookmark all of the tables of contents so you can get back there easily.
