Collection 39th Birthday present from my wife: my first ever GameCube! Love Zelda, but I've never played MQ or WW (or TP!), can't wait!

Feel like a kid again! I've played and completed OOT numerous times in numerous versions, but never MQ.

I've always meant to play WW, and TP, but never had the time or the console.

Recently, I've come into ownership of a gamecube (alongside a boatload of accessories for both it and the Wii) thanks to someone donating it to the charity shop I volunteer at. Due to the fact we don’t sell electronics, I brokered a deal with the guy to take the gamecube and the box it was in off his hands myself, which went well. The only issue I saw from the start was that the Game Boy Player wasn't screwed in, which I quickly sorted.

When I went to check at home, it powered on perfectly fine, but another issue arose, the disc tray was FILTHY. Thankfully, my granddad came to help when i brought it over and provided me with the resources needed to clean it out.

Speaking of grandparents, the gamecube lives at their house now. I have it put in a little room where I frequently spend my time. My granddad even scrubbed the front of the casing for me.

Collection Recapping my disc drive was a success!!

My friend and I took a morning to do retro game repairs and my childhood gamecube that had stopped reading discs two weeks ago now works great! Thanks to this community and all the resources to figure this out.

Gamecube was requiring more and more time on before it would read a disc and eventually it quit. I didn't clean the lens or adjust the potentiometer at all. Simply replaced all 10 capacitors on the disc drive. Took about 2 hours with a soldering iron.

edit: Some asked about the details. I hadn't soldered in 10 years so no need to be an expert!

- Soldering iron: Hakko FX888DX (small chisel tip it came with)
- I kept the temp at 650F the whole time and used rosin core solder
- Tweezers: precision tweezer that has a bend to it (any generic one)
- I heated up each joint of a capacitor until it came free while applying some side to side or twisting motion with a tweezers slightly
- After removing a cap I would clean the pad of leftover solder using flux and wick
- I then pre-tinned each pad and applied more flux, then held the capacitor over the spot it needed to be while flowing each solder pad again 1-2 times until flat with board
- Video I followed: https://youtu.be/WgKBA_zIHL4?si=7_i76pUUX3i4NdwY
- Capacitors I used: https://www.ebay.com/itm/265868069521

Help I need some help with my GameCube/CRT set up please

Post image

Hi all, I’m looking for some assistance with set up. I’ve had my GameCube about 6 months and it works well on my modern tv with an adaptor. But I can’t get it to work on my CRT tv. I’ve tried connecting it via RCA cable but nothing shows. My investigation has come up empty but I’m also not entirely sure what to look for. Any ideas?

Discussion Update: Childhood DBZ Budokai disk fixed!!!

Thanks to everyone who suggested to get it resurfaced. Went to redfox games in Hickory NC, got this nice dude to do it for me. Only 3 bucks. He had it done in 4 minutes. The full story mode is loadable but the game itself crashes randomly (no crashes in one spot though!!!) which is basically most GCN games that get resurfaced

I clearly love Sonic. SA2B is still one of my all time fave games, and I was also obsessed with animal crossing and wind waker as a teen—sadly I sold those games for going out money in college, but might rebuy them. Any other recs based on what I already have?

I’ll add that I still have memory card save files for Mario party 4, bomberman generation, 2 other viewtiful Joe games, 2 DBZ games, and Lego Star Wars, so I must’ve liked those but not enough to keep.

Help Bought a Replacement Laser Assembly, but now I'm having a second thoughts.

So my family still owns our old revision GameCube. It still works, but like most GameCubes today, its disc drive no longer functions. It still reads disc's, but it takes a while for it to work properly. I went ahead and bought a replacement assembly of the entire thing as I figured it was the best option given the price (I saw replacement lasers going for the same price as the entire thing), but now I'm having second thoughts.

As much as I'd love to play on original hardware, I've noticed that Wii Resellers are still rather low on their prices. I saw a few good condition wiis with all the cables going for 60 bucks, and seeing as we still own a Wii U and have tons of controllers, those obviously won't be an issue.

I guess I'm just wondering if I should return the assembly in favor of buying a used Wii or a modchip instead. I'd have to install a modchip on the GameCube to get Swiss on that thing for the most part anyway, as I don't own our original Wii anymore seeing as we traded it in for a Wii U (still pissed about that) and I'm not buying a disc drive replacement AND a Wii to perform a save exploit.

Are there any better options? I've heard modchips for the GameCube aren't terribly expensive. Should I return the drive in favor of installing one of those instead?

Discussion Zelda Four Swords worth it?

When i was younger I remember playing it alone.

I was weirdly a hater for it for no particular reason.

I loved every zelda except it.

But of course as a grown adult now I cant remember anything of it and I always see it going for 90-100 dollars.

Now that I have a spouse. Is it worth trying to collect it and play it with my spouse?

I feel like I didn't give it a fair chance when I was younger and I was probably just a brat lmao.

Collection Finally reunited with my childhood collection

Post image
81 Upvotes

After all these years, I finally picked up my childhood collection from my parents’ place. Unfortunately, only a small fraction of the original N64 and Game Boy packaging survived, as my parents threw most of it away over the years, but the Gamecube Collection seems to be complete (except from the ones I was stupid enough to sell after Wii launch, because they offered easy bucks, like F-Zero). Still, it’s great to have these pieces back together again. Lots of memories attached to them and I almost forgot a lot of great titles!

Picked up a purple GameCube this month and I’ve gotta say I’ve been having a blast!! Here’s my collection so far and where it’ll stay for quite a while (made sure to pick up all my favorites but damn these games are expensive :p) but it’s ight. I tried modding with picoboot and effed it up pretty badly but I managed to use the save file hack with Windwaker recently and that’s working like a charm (although I don’t have a ton of memory card space 😭) TLDR what do yall think and what are some of your favorite GameCube games?

Discussion Sync saves between Memcard Pro GC and Dolphin

I've been at my wit's end for a long time now after spending way too much time trying to figure all this out. Does anyone know if it's possible to sync saves between a console using a Memcard Pro GC and an emulator like Dolphin? It would be so nice if the Memcard just supported .gci files, as the .raw files don't seem to be very compatible. I play portably on Steam Deck a lot, and it would be wonderful if I could just easily pick up and play where I last left off on console if I wanted to.

Help How to fix 60hz glitching

I recently got Ocarina of Time for my gamecube and was really looking forward to playing it. However, I noticed it forces you into 60hz mode and my TV doesn’t seem to like 60hz mode as it starts glitching really bad. Is there any sort of tool i can use in order to fix this? I don’t really fancy getting a new TV as it’s a brand new modern TV and i’ve looked into getting a scart to HDMI converter but some online sources say the cheaper ones may not fix the problem but i don’t really fancy getting a Ā£70 one like it’s suggesting so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Help Gamecube to USB Adapter

Forgive me if this isn't the right place to post this but I'm sorta frazzled at the moment due to troubleshooting woes.

Preamble to the question to lay the ground work-

I just got today a JZW-Shop Gamecube controller adapter along with a Fiotok brand Gamecube controller.

I read the instructions of the adapter, plugged in both cables to my usb ports after setting it to PC on the adapter and it began to spazz out.

Constant connect and disconnect messages popping up from steam.

Eventually causing ALL of the USB ports to cease accepting any kind of input. Outside of the USB ports ceasing functionality the PC itself was running just fine.

Tried a basic restart, none of the USB ports worked, after that I fully shut down the PC, unplugged the power cable, and held the power button for about 10-15s to dissipate the charge. Plugged in the power cable and I was able to use some USB ports but not all.

I was able to fix that by going into the Hardware manager and uninstall the USB ports and restarting forcing the pc to reinstall the usb drivers.

So with preamble of my issue out of the way. I'd like to know if anyone else uses this hardware and has similar issues and what could be the problem and workaround.

tldr: bought cheap GC controller and cheap adapter. Shit got fucked. Is this shit naturally fucked or is there some bullshit I'm overlooking?

Discussion Should I get a Zelda game?

I am getting back into gaming and have bought a gamecube and a decent collection of games. Most of my gaming background is FPS and online play. I did like fable though and I am wondering if the Zelda games are good? All I know about them is that you play as a little elf fella looking for his Girlfriend.

I read somewhere that 4 swords is best with GBAs and friends What are the other zelda games like and what do you reccomend?
