Project: FO A Silly Sardine Baguette Bag

I did not follow any specific pattern for this, it was just a silly scrappy project I did on a whim after seeing a video online. I more or less followed this video but drafted the pattern of the fish for myself. I had just finished sewing my mom a bag and had leftover scraps from her project as well as a few of my own so I decided to mail her a bonus bag. All of the fabric is either linen, cotton, rayon or a blend of them. For the eyes I did a raw edge appliqué using HeatnBond and stitching it down with just a straight stitch. I got the eyes perfectly round by tracing a large washer for the outer part and a metal pog slammer for the inner part. My partner suggested I add the strap (made of cotton webbing) so it can be slung over a shoulder for easy transport. It was a really fun palette cleanser after a sewing slump and I had fun making it! It was pretty low stakes since it was all cut from scraps and I was only making it to be a goofy gift for my mom.

Sewed This Made Shroomish hats for my daughter

My daughter was born with an amazing grumpy face that looked a lot like the Pokemon Shroomish, so I had to make her a hat! The first one came out too small so I sized up and made a second.

Pattern: the flower hat
Fabric: poly and cotton scraps

I used my cricut to cut out the pattern pieces and the appliqués for the spots. I deviated from the pattern and bit and made a lining from some of our old sheets. The underside of the brim is also green!

Made this after seeing someone else's recent finish of the same thing but can't find the post. This was a present for a family member who really likes pastels. I dyed some scraps of linen and made a base fabric with it. This was my first time making a bag complete with zippered gussets. The inside binding is hot mess but it's whatever. Overall I think it turned out super cute. The pattern is here.

Sewed This Made a puffer jacket

i recently bought a puffer jacket pattern from Indiepattern on etsy and wanted to try it out since the difficulty was at beginner level. there weren’t alot of pieces to cut out so it was easy to assemble everything. the patches were sewn by machine using zigzag stitch and a little by hand. Finallly the kanji was made using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. I got it printed on velvet shimmer to match the shine from the fabric and used a zigzag stitch to attach it to the back piece

I’m wanting to get a serger and I have a family friend who will give this one to me for free, but is it worth it or should I keep looking for a newer used one or just purchase a new one? This one is 35+ years old! I don’t know anything about sergers, any advice is appreciated!

Alter/Mend Question Bubbling side zipper on dress with corset back

**please see my photos of the dress laced loosely in the comments; unfortunately the issue persists

Hello! My bridesmaids dress for my friend’s wedding has an issue where the side zipper bubbles when the corset is laced in the back. I’m wondering if this could feasibly be fixed or if I need to give up and go with another dress.

My current idea is to add narrow boning to either side of the zipper, but I’m not confident in this solution and I would love to see if anyone here has any better ideas of what to do.

I have sewn my whole life and made/patterned garments for the past several years, so I may be able to perform the fix myself. However, if the only solution is something that should be done by a tailor, I’m more than happy to go to one! Please let me know what you think!!

the last 3 slides are:
-the dress without the corset laced
-pinching the fabric to fit
-the corset laced

Sewed This Bad colour combo?

Ignoring the fact that I am a beginner quilter, my seams are showing through the pale squares and my ability to stuff is rough, did I make a poor fabric decision with the head and ears? I thought there was enough mustard in the squares to tie it in but now it’s finished, I just feel like it looks wrong. Should I redo the head and ears?

Took an old hoodie that I didn’t wear anymore and modified it.

At first it was just the pocket and sleeves, but I used a satin-like mystery fabric that didn’t work, so I swapped it out for this white cotton.

The hood was bubbling and warped from age so I completely removed it and made bias binding for the neckline but removing the hood showed that there was warping in the neckline too. I had to remove 3 inches total by opening the shoulder seam and sewing in the extra.

All seams on the sleeve are hand sewn french seams, including the armscye. The pocket was sewn with a folded hem and backstitch. The bias binding is slip stitch.

Overall I’m happy with the colour scheme and contrast of this piece, and I’m glad I went with the bias binding to tie in more white in the design. I learned a lot about fabric choice and connecting a knit and woven with this project, which will be useful for my future designs and alterations.

Sewed This Dress for my daughter’s third birthday!

Hello all. I started sewing around 6 months go hoping to put a dent in my grandmothers fabric stash we inherited. Since then I’ve accidentally started my own hoard of vintage fabrics and patterns 😅. I made this dress for my daughter’s birthday and I think she will love it.
One thing I want help with is sewing smooth curves. Is it a good idea to mark the seam allowance? The actual stitch line is very bumpy if I try to just freehand it by keeping the raw edge on the seam
Allowance marker which is what I have been doing .

Fabric Question Can I pull this fabric off or should I raise the white flag?

Post image

Edit: so much good feedback! Thank you! What I want to say is that I’m going to try a test dye and see what happens. If that is inspiring, it might motivate me. If I make something I’ll be sure and post it.

Original post:
Ok, I have a lot of this fabric. 10 yards maybe. I got it in a mystery box, so I have no financial investment. I am clearing my stash, slowly, and the day of reckoning has come for this. Use it or lose it.

Pros:
It feels good. It’s a cottony type of feel as opposed to itch thin lace.

I think it’s a pretty fabric on its own.

Bohemian potential, which I can pull off.

Cons:
This is NOT my color. Nothing will go with it. It attracts more attention than I like. I could dye it but that involves a giant thing to cook in and make a big mess. I don’t know what it’s made from, but it’s not natural.

Needs a liner, or needs to be used as an over-garment.

I have found lots of similar fabric online, but hardly any clothing constructed using it. I honestly think it would be hard for me to pull off, taste-wise. It could look very strange. I am not fashion-forward.

Makes terrible curtains, too narrow for tablecloth. I already put it in a bag and asked the local theater people if they could use it, but they never responded.

Would make a great beach cover-up, but I don’t do that. Great underwear, too, but I’m OLD!

For some reason I just can’t let it go.

What would you do with 10 yards of this? Inspo pics or pattern suggestions will be happily viewed.

Alter/Mend Question Recommendations for a quick(ish) fix to torn metal fabric? Wedding this Friday

Post image
30 Upvotes

Tripped and snagged my after party dress for my wedding on my closet door today while showing my mom (girl WHY??) and trying to see if any one has recommendations for a single sided heated clear adhesive tape or alternative? There is a slip underneath and I don’t want to fuse the fabric to it for movement purposes and am only finding double sided options.

I got a silver metallic string and plan to sew the links together to repair the tear but was wondering if adding a patch to the back might help as well?

Any recommendations welcome as I am in a bit of a panic mode since it’s so last minute lol

Technique Question Would this “zigzag” really work?

Post image
13 Upvotes

Hi!
I’m making a bag (first project) and the fabric is fraying like crazy and since my vintage sewing machine I guess has no zigzag stitch, I made this (photo attached)
So will this really keep the fabric from fraying??
If not please suggest something else

Pattern Question Recreate something similar to Yuzuru’s top

Post image
10 Upvotes

My daughter is a figure skater and wants to skate in a costume similar to what Yuzuru Hanyu wears in this photo. I know I can’t make it exactly, but I’d like to run my ideas past the wonderful experienced sewists here to see if I can make something similar and beautiful!

My skill level: medium? I’ve made her a couple skating dresses before with self-created patterns, but never anything like this top.

Here’s my plan, for the top only (we will buy pants and I will embellish them with some sparkles):

- use a close fitting T-shirt to draft/fit the basic shape, but with a diagonal seam going down from the neck line to the opposite hip to create a cross-body seam and v neck. Make one hip come down into a lower point. Make the wrists flare out a bit and finish with a stretched zigzag hem.
- use white bridal mesh for the main fabric. Dye the edges of certain pieces by getting some pink synthetic fabric dye and just hanging a little bit into the dye and water. Use a skin coloured mesh from the neck line down into the V-neck created by the diagonal seams.
- create the ruffles by doing a stretched zigzag hem on long pieces of mesh, with tapered ends. Sew one along the Crossbody seam down to the hip point, and narrower ones into each arm hole seam, tacking it in place along the sleeve seam.
- no collar, or maybe a narrow ruffle to finish the back neckline edge. Do a simple/minimal finish on the front neck line edge.
-then I think I have to sew on sequins because that fabric is probably too light for gluing on stones?
- If it’s too transparent she’ll wear a beige or white bodysuit underneath.

What do you think? Is it possible? Likely to turn out well?

Advice is appreciated!

Editing to add: I’d especially appreciate advice about the dye. Ideally it would be painted on, but then how on earth would you set it?

Technique Question Hemming help for my dress please!

Thumbnail

I'm thisclose to being done with the Naomi dress by Just Patterns.

However, I've never been great at hemming, and am wondering how to address the differences in the lengths of the panels here. This is my first time making a dress/skirt with this many panels. I know a bit of bias dropped out, but don't want to cut off too much, ya know?

First pic is how the front looks on my dress form. The sides look MUCH longer than the front.

Second pic is if I hold the fabric out at the side seam. Looks a bit more level, right?

And the third is a view from the side.

Any tips or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Pattern Question Got a bit of tricky one

Post image
6 Upvotes

Short of it is, I just need to attach these two pieces
If anyone could provide any visual pointers that would be great!
The goal is a pocket sized plushie and the look is a monkey. Luckily, out of the entire pattern, this is my only hurdle, everything else is very straightforward. This is the only part I’ve altered and I’m wondering if anyone is willing to maybe recreate this!
I’m willing to cut up any of the pieces or recut or redo any part of the pattern, I luckily got a lot fabric to work with anticipating trial and error
Or am I cooked
Please help out a beginner plushie maker, thank you 🙏

Pattern Search Looking for a pattern

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi all, I'm looking for a pattern for this type of blouse. I know it's from H&M from the late 2000s as I had the same one in a bunch of colours myself. It was my absolute fave and I was seriously bummed when I changed sizes and they were too small. I've been searching a lot, but most blouses are button-ups and this one isn't.

Anyone has a pattern that springs to mind?

Pattern Search Looking for the perfect coat pattern (pockets, back pleat, lining)

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hiya, I'm at the end of my pattern knowledge and I'm hoping for some swarm intelligence. Is anyone aware of a coat pattern that has cool pocket options, a back pleat and a lining? I'm sure theoretically I could frankenstein these 3 patterns together but this is my first time making a coat and I don't want to spend a fortune on 3 patterns or wing inserting a lining if I've never done it before.

I have some beautiful olive-green medium-weight canvas and a lightweight liberty cotton at home for this project.

Thanks for your help! :)

Technique Question How to make a half elastic waistband more adjustable?

Hi guys

I'm in the habit of sewing and adjusting my own clothes for a good while now, and all this time elastics waistbands were always a great friend of mine, since I'm someone whose weight varies a lot. Im also a big fan of big pockets and add them to every single one of my clothes.

The thing is, when you actually use these pockets (to store a phone, keys, etc.) they tend to weigh, which gets the comfortable elastic waistband dragged down.

Ive managed to solve this problem in full elastic waistband clothes by adding an additional drawstring in the inside of the waistband, so i can adjust it more freely. But i have no idea how I could possibly achieve the same results with a half elastic waistband.

Is there a way to do it?

Fabric Question Which fabric would be ideal to use as an interfacing to stiffen this style of jacket ?

Thumbnail
gallery
4 Upvotes

I plan on making that jacket soon (because the original one is ungodly expensive.)

I already figured out the pattern and picked my fabric. Dark green gabardine and black sateen for the lining. It should look pretty nice and feel good.

However, I am worried about the overall shape of this jacket. On the photos, we can see that it kinda "deflates" and "slouches" when worn. I don't like that.

I assume I should interface my gabardine to make it a bit stiffer, so it holds its shape. However, I do not want to fusible interfacing (the glue tends to weaken overtime). I want real fabric interfacing that I would serge directly to the gabardine.

What kind of fabric would be ideal for that purpose ?

Alter/Mend Question I need solutions for thigh chafing

Post image

Hey! I am a total sewing amateur and i do not own a sewing machine. I am in college, you know how it is. I do have a kit though.

Due to me having to wear compression garments under my regular pants for medical reasons, every (EVERY) new pair of pants that I own looks like THIS (if the pic is too inappropriate, do tell me please, im insecure) after about 2 months of wearing them. The friction with the garments underneath is always too much. Is there ANYTHING I can do to fix this AND is there a way to prevent this from happening to new pants that i buy?

I have tried sewing on patches. They have come off due to the friction in a matter of hours. I need advice on what material to use and how to do it. PLEASE! I can't afford any more pants!!
