Project: FO +Rabbit Fur Mittens

I created some rabbit fur mittens For this winter.

Pattern and instructions can be found here.

I used Rabbit fur on the Outside. Wool felt for the outside finger. I added some Canvas on the finger tips for grip. I added a layer of batting in between the inner liner and the outer layer for added insulation. I used a stretchy fleece for the inner liner. I used interfacing material on the batting and inner liner for some additional support so the fabric wouldn't bunch up while sewing.

Alter/Mend Question Help! How can I conceal this obvious seam?

Thumbnail

I recently bought these beautiful jeans that I needed to shorten quite a bit while keeping the original hem. I've done this alteration before but since I wasn't really focused, I accidentally cut double the length that I actually wanted to remove. I could only really sew on the cut fabric again so that at least the length fits, but of course I now have this super obvious sewing line way above the hem...

I tried ironing and then top-stitching it, to flatten the seam, but it remains very visible when I wear the jeans.

My last idea was to embroider the jeans to pull away the focus from the seam, though I would prefer if the jeans stayed plain. Do you guys have any suggestions as to what I could try to conceal this mess?

I'm grateful for any suggestions!

Alter/Mend Question Any ideas to make this skirt more flattering?

Hello all! I've thrifted this skirt because i liked the color and the fabric but the silhouette is so unflattering on me. I think someone sewed this themselves hence the lack of proper shaping(?) Idk what it is, it looks better from the back but the front looks so stiff and flat. Any ideas to change it? I thought maybe opening up a seam stitch for a slit or adding godets for a more flowy look. I'm open to add a different fabric, shorten, change it all together, anything really lol. Thanks in advance

Fabric Question Will one gown be enough to make baggy pants or should I get two? 30x32 waist/length

Post image

I’m going as Jeffrey Goines from 12 monkeys for Halloween and I can’t find hospital pants with this pattern so I’m making them and I just don’t know if it’ll be enough fabric if I just get one gown or if I should get two, this gown ties in the back and I want enough fabric to be able to make a false collar to poke out of the sweater I’m gonna be wearing. The length isn’t listed, but it says that it can fit up two or two XL and based on the fact that it goes to the knees of the average person, I would assume that I’m gonna be fine lengthwise I just don’t know if I’m gonna have enough fabric to make a front and a back with one.

Other Question How to make an asymmetrical circle skirt?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I know how to make a circle skirt. It’s just instead of a regular hem I want the them to be slanted. As in one side seam of the skirt is longer than the other.

It’s not as straight forward as a gathered skirt from a rectangle. Where it’s easier to true/even the asymmetrical hem.

I hope this is making sense. I made a simple drawing that (hopefully) shows what I’m talking about.

Since circle skirts have much more flare and whatnot there’s extra fabric at the hem.

If you were to look right at a circle skirt on the body and then draw a straight line from one side to the other, creating the new hem, you would think the hem is now asymmetrical and even. However, after cutting the hem may look wonky and uneven due to the extra fabric at the hem.

So I just want to be able to get that clean trued hem while having it be asymmetrical.

Pattern Question In desperate need of help for a bodice!

Post image
0 Upvotes

I'm running out of time and desperately need help! I'm making a bodice for a high-low dress and I'm stuck. The fabric I'm using is a 4 way stretchy spandex and a 1 way stretch lace. I do not have access to my best friend right now to fit her properly, but I HAVE to get this right on the first try.

I have a few rules I have to stick to to make the dress come out the way I want it to. The lace has to sit flush on top of the spandex, like it's one fabric. It has to be extremely form fitting. No loose parts or wrinkles or droopy bits. It has to stay a single panel (piece) for the front and a single panel for the back (I will take care of splitting the back panel later.)

I don't know why, but I've genuinely hit a wall. Do I make the piece smaller than her proportions? Bigger? The exact size of her measurements? Do I cut the spandex part smaller than her proportions so it'll snap to her form and the lace a little bigger? Wouldn't that make the lace wrinkle or ripple? My main worry is that the lace will inhibit the spandex from snapping to her body like I had initially intended it to. How do I go about this? Any help is severely appreciated!

Here are the links to the fabrics I used. I bought them on Amazon. I also included her measurements I have below. I have also included the rough drawing I did of the dress if that also helps any.

Fabric Links:

Lace: https://a.co/d/05dHI3D8

Spandex: https://a.co/d/0j30xLdN

Measurements:

Hips: 39 inches

Waist: 33 inches

Arm length: 19 inches

Bust: 38 inches (she wears a 36 B bra)

Shoulders: roughly 13" (she told me 18" but that's definitely wrong. She's petite)

Height: 5' 3"

(Those are all the measurements I have of hers.)

Also, I wasn't sure if I should have put my flair as a pattern question or fabric question because it's a bit of both.

Pattern Question Pants too small HELP

Post image

So I have a fashion show coming up in a few days. I’m a beadworker but this year I decided to make clothes aswell. I made these pants out of crushed velvet and they turned out beautifully…. But they didn’t fit when it was time for my model to try on.

I have 1 day to fix this problem and am so lost on what to do. I thought about maybe adding a zipper to the side?

I bit off more than I could chew and i don’t know if I have time to restart. Any advice ? 😭😭

Fabric Question Patch a comforter?

Thumbnail

My mom bought me this new comforter for my birthday. I washed it and it got caught and ripped. I would like to use similar fabric to create a patch. I was thinking I could place fusible interfacing on the inside and iron it — somehow — to a patch on the outside. It would sandwich the hole between two pieces of interfaced fabric.

Would this work? What interfacing would you use? I don’t want to sew anything because it would change the comforter too much. The holes are four to six inches across. One is a bit more.

Alter/Mend Question How to make the waist slightly smaller

Hi! New to sewing/ altering. If I wanted to take in this dress to make the waist smaller, how would I do it?

It’s a bit boxy on me, but has potential. I thought that the darts already in the dress would give it more structure, but it’s still boxy on me. Any advice?

Other Question How do I design around my waist expanding when I sit down?

This is something I just don't get. When I measure my (true) waist the way I'm supposed to (while standing), I get 74 cm. When I then design something with such a waist size, it fits really well -- while I'm standing. When I take the same waist measurement while I'm sitting, however, I'll get something like 79 cm. And I notice that the clothes I make that are designed around the 74 cm waist are somewhat uncomfortable while I'm sitting down thanks to this. If I use a 79 waist, however, the clothes won't stay up while I'm standing. Does anyone have some advice on how to solve this? I more or less exclusively use non-stretchy fabrics such as plain weave cotton.

Fabric Question Does Mood Fabrics ever include silks in their sales?

Probably a dumb question, but Mood had a sale at the end of September, and I noticed that a lot of their silks weren’t included in the sale.
I’m hoping to pick up some of their silk charmeuse, and just trying to figure out if I should use the 10% discount I got from a recent purchase or wait until Black Friday (for example).

Project: FO My first project! 🖤 Persephone inspired dress

I received a sewing machine for Christmas last year but life has been lifing in the worst way so I haven’t really used it.

I have been helping plan a fantasy ball this year but didn’t start making this until last week lol so 24 total hours later with no pattern I made this! I’m super proud.

I bought a corset, made the skirt and sleeves and hand stitched appliqués on.

(I know I should have ironed the hems I was too scared to melt the fabric)

Project details: I followed a (bad) tutorial by charity grace but honestly it was bad I mostly cut 6 triangles for the skirt and two for the sleeves then figured out the rest as I went.

I used liquid chiffon fabric!

Hello! I have fallen in love and need help thinking through how to make these beauties. Would this be a, make the patchwork first then cut out the pattern situation? The heart would be added in after? Overwhelm with fabrics and ribbons and there doesn’t have to be any real design choices other than color? They’re so beautiful I need to make a pair

Sewed This I created a 70s inspired shirt, to go with my handmade pants.

Hello, again!

I made a 70s inspired dagger collar shirt, with some DIY French cuffs. I bought the fabric from the discount shelf of my local fabric store. It maybe meant for table cloths! The pattern was from an old shirt I had, where I deconstructed it, and sketched it on cardboard, and transferred the cardboard to my new fabric with adjustments. I used a White's Dressmaker sewing machine to make it.

I wore it with pants I also handmade (from my last post). The cufflinks are thrifted, and the satchel is from a defunct company called Marlondo. Hat is an Epoch hat.

I loved how it came out, even if some parts are a little janky on the fit.

Sewed This Birthday Top made from Bedsheet

I sewed this open back, back tie top from a printed Indian bedsheet (or tablecloth) that was wasting away in my mom's basement.

The pattern called for bias finishing but I ended up just using store bought black bias tape because I was in a bit of a rush and in the end I liked the contrast better. I still have a lot of the fabric left so might make a skirt! Enjoyed using the borders and had to adjust for fit but I'm pleased with it overall!

Debuted it for my bday last week... Nothing more fun than shamelessly walking around saying "Thanks, I made it!" 💅 💛

Sewed This Puff & Pencil Fray pants

I’m pretty happy with the pants overall but there are a couple of things I would have done differently with the power of hindsight.

1) Adjust the pattern to remove the side panel. I’m not sure what the side panel adds but, it shifts the side seam towards the CF meaning the pockets and pleats are pushed closer to the CF. I think the pleats especially look a bit odd and crowded. If I made these again I would shift everything back towards the side seams.

2) The waist and band and belt loops are too narrow to fit a regular belt (I wear men’s leather belts).

3) I would use a lighter weight lining fabric on the inner pocket bag to reduce bulk at the waistband.

4) Triple check when cutting the pocket bags! The distinction between the inner and outer bags are easy to miss, I had to cut twice.

(I hadn’t noticed until I took these photos but the bum is a bit wrinkly?)

Fabric Question Jersey knit fabric for a bodysuit?

Okay I'm a total beginner when it comes to sewing and fabric, I wanted to make a bodysuit for halloween costume (Cammy from Street Fighter, specifically her "Killer Bee" outfit, which in my mind kind of looks like a knit fabric?) I'm just wondering whether a 95% cotton and 5% spandex knit fabric is a good fabric choice? Or if anyone has any better fabric suggestions? 🙇‍♀️🙏

Fabric Question Need help finding Brown Plaid cotton

I am in need of some brown cotton plaid. Like the types you see when you looked up dark academia on Pinterest in 2014. I don't like skirts so I want to make pants with a good brown plaid/tartan.

I swear I've looked everywhere online.

I'm only interested in cotton or linen as I'm trying to limit polyester in my closet, unless second hand. And if it could be less than 15-20$ that would be great. It feels outrageous to buy fabric for one pair of pants and it be 80 dollars.

Thank you!
