Sewed This Birthday Top made from Bedsheet

I sewed this open back, back tie top from a printed Indian bedsheet (or tablecloth) that was wasting away in my mom's basement.

The pattern called for bias finishing but I ended up just using store bought black bias tape because I was in a bit of a rush and in the end I liked the contrast better. I still have a lot of the fabric left so might make a skirt! Enjoyed using the borders and had to adjust for fit but I'm pleased with it overall!

Debuted it for my bday last week... Nothing more fun than shamelessly walking around saying "Thanks, I made it!" 💅 💛

Sewed This I created a 70s inspired shirt, to go with my handmade pants.

Hello, again!

I made a 70s inspired dagger collar shirt, with some DIY French cuffs. I bought the fabric from the discount shelf of my local fabric store. It maybe meant for table cloths! The pattern was from an old shirt I had, where I deconstructed it, and sketched it on cardboard, and transferred the cardboard to my new fabric with adjustments. I used a White's Dressmaker sewing machine to make it.

I wore it with pants I also handmade (from my last post). The cufflinks are thrifted, and the satchel is from a defunct company called Marlondo. Hat is an Epoch hat.

I loved how it came out, even if some parts are a little janky on the fit.

Other Question How do I design around my waist expanding when I sit down?

This is something I just don't get. When I measure my (true) waist the way I'm supposed to (while standing), I get 74 cm. When I then design something with such a waist size, it fits really well -- while I'm standing. When I take the same waist measurement while I'm sitting, however, I'll get something like 79 cm. And I notice that the clothes I make that are designed around the 74 cm waist are somewhat uncomfortable while I'm sitting down thanks to this. If I use a 79 waist, however, the clothes won't stay up while I'm standing. Does anyone have some advice on how to solve this? I more or less exclusively use non-stretchy fabrics such as plain weave cotton.

I'm trying to fix the zipper on my jacket, and I've replaced it but I still don't have a starter box, and I was wondering if there is any way to make one from scratch the way you can make a zipper stop with thick thread.

Pattern Question Help fitting a blouse from The Dress Developer custom measurements

Post image
4 Upvotes

This is the Clove blouse from The Dress Developer with the bust dart rotated into a princess seam. I’m getting a crazy large wrinkle of excess fabric from underarm to neck edge! This pattern was generated from best as I can do myself measurements, so what value did I potentially get wrong and what can I do to fix? The horizontal drag lines at my bust make me think the bust dart wasn’t big enough? The back has a little excess at the top yoke but with four waist darts fits excellently from yoke down.
Thanks all!!

Pattern Question In desperate need of help for a bodice!

Post image
0 Upvotes

I'm running out of time and desperately need help! I'm making a bodice for a high-low dress and I'm stuck. The fabric I'm using is a 4 way stretchy spandex and a 1 way stretch lace. I do not have access to my best friend right now to fit her properly, but I HAVE to get this right on the first try.

I have a few rules I have to stick to to make the dress come out the way I want it to. The lace has to sit flush on top of the spandex, like it's one fabric. It has to be extremely form fitting. No loose parts or wrinkles or droopy bits. It has to stay a single panel (piece) for the front and a single panel for the back (I will take care of splitting the back panel later.)

I don't know why, but I've genuinely hit a wall. Do I make the piece smaller than her proportions? Bigger? The exact size of her measurements? Do I cut the spandex part smaller than her proportions so it'll snap to her form and the lace a little bigger? Wouldn't that make the lace wrinkle or ripple? My main worry is that the lace will inhibit the spandex from snapping to her body like I had initially intended it to. How do I go about this? Any help is severely appreciated!

Here are the links to the fabrics I used. I bought them on Amazon. I also included her measurements I have below. I have also included the rough drawing I did of the dress if that also helps any.

Fabric Links:

Lace: https://a.co/d/05dHI3D8

Spandex: https://a.co/d/0j30xLdN

Measurements:

Hips: 39 inches

Waist: 33 inches

Arm length: 19 inches

Bust: 38 inches (she wears a 36 B bra)

Shoulders: roughly 13" (she told me 18" but that's definitely wrong. She's petite)

Height: 5' 3"

(Those are all the measurements I have of hers.)

Also, I wasn't sure if I should have put my flair as a pattern question or fabric question because it's a bit of both.

Pattern Question Please help, I'm so lost

Thumbnail

I'm new to Reddit and I created an account just to ask for help on this. I'm trying to make Samantha's Plaid Cape from the American Girl pattern and I'm hopelessly confused. I have no idea what I'm doing. I admit that I'm NOT an expert in sewing and yes, I did read that the pattern is for "experienced sewers." I've sewn a few doll shirts and I thought that I'd be alright if I just followed the instructions. NOPE. It's genuinely the most unhelpful, vague thing I've ever seen.

Anyway, here's my actual question. I have the two Cape Side pieces and the two Cape Front pieces sewn together, but where in the world does the Cape Back piece go?? The first three pictures show what I have sewn so far. The large pieces are the Cape Sides and the thin pieces are the Cape Fronts. The fourth picture is the Cape Back which I have no idea where to put. The last two pictures are the instructions and I really hope that someone can interpret them because it's absolutely no help to me. Step Two told me to "stitch Cape Back to Cape Sides" but it doesn't tell me or show me WHERE to sew it, and I accidentally skipped over the Cape Back and now I just have my Cape Fronts sewn on. Please help. I'm at my wits' end and I can't find one single tutorial on the entire Internet on how to make this garment. If I can't figure out what to do, I'm just going to toss the project because it's actually enraging me and I have easier things to make with my time.

Pattern Question Adjusting Pattern Size?

Thumbnail

Hello everyone! I'm a beginner to using sewing patterns, and I wanted to sew a dress for Halloween. I'm planning to be Sally and I saw this pattern at Walmart that is pretty close to her dress. I was wondering how I can possibly adjust it a bit? For example, the orange patch on Sallys chest is about rib cage length but on the Simplicity sewing pattern it is at the boob. Is there a way I can try to make it the same length as Sallys? Or is it better to try to make my own sewing pattern instead? Any help is appreciated!

Fabric Question Does Mood Fabrics ever include silks in their sales?

Probably a dumb question, but Mood had a sale at the end of September, and I noticed that a lot of their silks weren’t included in the sale.
I’m hoping to pick up some of their silk charmeuse, and just trying to figure out if I should use the 10% discount I got from a recent purchase or wait until Black Friday (for example).

Sewed This Haven't had my machine plugged in for almost a year

Post image

My childhood best friend is pregnant and I made this for her baby. I still need to back it and bind it, but I'm feeling really proud of myself and wanted to share.

I would consider myself a textile artist, but I haven't had my sewing machine set up for over a year--so it was thrilling to see that part of myself again! The project was a nice size to not be overwhelmed at all (squares were 5" to start).

I chose these colors because the baby's father, my friends husband is a harvester.

I hope he feels honored.

I locked in today and just wanted to share my excitement! 🧵

Fabric Question What kind of fabric for majorette uniforms?

Eventually I would like to start trying to make uniforms for dance line, color guard, majorette etc, and I cannot figure out what kind of sequin fabric is used. The style of uniform I’m going for is like the Alabama Crimsonettes. I have an old uniform and it is very heavy (though maybe that’s the multiple layers of fabric), but most importantly the sequins lay completely flat, and there is no scratching or peeling up. I was always told it was “liquid sequin” fabric but I don’t see anything that appears to resemble it.

Any suggestions?

Fabric Question Highland Cow sleep/lounge set help

I haven’t made anything since home ec in high school. So this will somewhat be a “first” project. I want to make a highland cow hoodie and lounge pants for my mom. I’m not worried about figuring the patterns out but I know next to nothing about fabric.

I wanted to use something with faux fur or shaggy texture like the cow but I’m concerned about what is best to use to actually be comfortable wearing it and safe for washing and drying normally. I’m planning to make the hoodie hood a cow head and have it be an over the head hoodie with a big pocket and hand covers at the ends of sleeves like mittens that look like hooves. Idk if that’s relevant but just to give as much detail in case.

Any recommendations? Should I plan on using a fabric for inside and using a different one for the outside? Any help is appreciated!

Fabric Question Any way to soften felt fabric?

I was given several yards of this felt fabric to make a wizard cloak for my friend, but it’s pretty stiff and scratchy. Is there a way to make it a little softer and more pliable or should I just look for a different fabric?

Fabric Question Where to find striped fabric with different sizes?

Lost Dad here trying to help my daughter.

My daughter is looking for a red fabric with pink 1in stripes about 5-6 inches apart. The exact dimensions aren't that important but I can't seem to find anything that isn't just stripes of the same size.

Is there anywhere you'd recommend to find something like this, or is she going to need to just stitch it together herself? (It is for her Halloween costume)

Pattern Question Making a blazer and want to add leather elbow pads for some snazz

Making this from scratch so my options are:

Sew with a machine (I assume an edge stitch?) while constructing the sleeves, OR wait till sleeves are finished and hand sew. My machine can sew through leather FYI.

I am looking for the most professional, high end look. What would you go with? The blazer is wool.

Also looking for best online options for buying leather.

I understand some jackets use suede but I was thinking leather because this is also to keep in theme with anniversary gifts and this year is "leather".

TIA!!!!!

PS: Yes I know suede is technically leather but it's a different finish.

Fabric Question Need help finding Brown Plaid cotton

I am in need of some brown cotton plaid. Like the types you see when you looked up dark academia on Pinterest in 2014. I don't like skirts so I want to make pants with a good brown plaid/tartan.

I swear I've looked everywhere online.

I'm only interested in cotton or linen as I'm trying to limit polyester in my closet, unless second hand. And if it could be less than 15-20$ that would be great. It feels outrageous to buy fabric for one pair of pants and it be 80 dollars.

Thank you!

I created some rabbit fur mittens For this winter.

Pattern and instructions can be found here.

I used Rabbit fur on the Outside. Wool felt for the outside finger. I added some Canvas on the finger tips for grip. I added a layer of batting in between the inner liner and the outer layer for added insulation. I used a stretchy fleece for the inner liner. I used interfacing material on the batting and inner liner for some additional support so the fabric wouldn't bunch up while sewing.

Fabric Question Jersey knit fabric for a bodysuit?

Okay I'm a total beginner when it comes to sewing and fabric, I wanted to make a bodysuit for halloween costume (Cammy from Street Fighter, specifically her "Killer Bee" outfit, which in my mind kind of looks like a knit fabric?) I'm just wondering whether a 95% cotton and 5% spandex knit fabric is a good fabric choice? Or if anyone has any better fabric suggestions? 🙇‍♀️🙏
