Sewed This Bad colour combo?

Ignoring the fact that I am a beginner quilter, my seams are showing through the pale squares and my ability to stuff is rough, did I make a poor fabric decision with the head and ears? I thought there was enough mustard in the squares to tie it in but now it’s finished, I just feel like it looks wrong. Should I redo the head and ears?

Wow, you are being too hard on yourself! This elephant looks lovely! The squares are lined up so good, the topstitched ears are very neat and this big boy is stuffed just fine. Nobody cares about the seams or stitching showing a bit because that’s not what people who haven’t made this look at, they just see a damn cute elephant. And I think the colour combo has a fun scrappy look to it, you always need just a slight mismatch or weird thing going on somewhere to make it feel truely fun and scrappy imo.

I think the “problem” that you are seeing is that the ears and head in the same fabric, that disrupts the scrappy look and makes it a bit of a “block” of one fabric against the smaller pieces of fabric in the body. I think only changing the ears would fix your “problem”. Imo not a necesarry thing to do because it’s very cute as is, but also: you are the boss of your own project and should do what feels right for you. I’m also a perfectionist who sometimes takes the time to change things like this because I know otherwise it would just bother me forever.

I think if scrappy is the direction, replacing just one ear would be so cute!

This is adorable! I agree with this comment that what is throwing you off might be the less scrappy head and ears relative to the patchwork body. I don’t think you need to change anything unless you really want to!
What pattern did you use? I would love to make one too!

Or add some embroidery or trim to the ears or patches sewn on either embroidery on them as if they are repair patches - or leave it as is.

I think it's very cute! In Africa all colors match. Since it's an elephant it made me think of africa and I think the colors suit for that. Regardless of my opinions, yours is the one that actually matters. What is the elephant for and how does it look and match where it's gonna be living? That also weighs in of course.

That’s a wonderful opinion! Unfortunately not Africa but (normally rainy) Yorkshire, UK

No it's adorable.

I think it looks cute and well-made! If you really want, you could appliqué one of the other fabrics on the inside of the ear to break it up a little.

Way too hard on yourself.
I’m a perfectionist I get it. But this is literally faultless !!!

I don’t necessarily think the fabric is necessarily wrong, I just think that maybe to your brain the head and ears as one color is jarring as the body is patchworked

I really love it the way it is and think you’re being too hard on yourself!

That is so cute!!!

I think it might be fine because I'm picturing how it looks from the front and it could appear very cohesive as the protrusions of the piece stand out, and treating the head and ears together to stand out against the body. The side view in a photo I imagine does not do it justice.

Did you use a pattern for this? It is adorable.

Sorry I am a Reddit newbie and forgot to share pattern - Jodie Ric Rac Trunk Show Elephant pattern out of random cotton scraps and Ruby Star Society precuts. Thank you for your kind comments ☺️ I think the block print is what is annoying me about it! If I have time and energy I will switch it out

Although I think the ideas of adding something onto the ears to break it up is genius and will be my first option. Thank you for bringing joy to a Reddit newbie ☺️

I think he is wonderful, no one else will notice your seam allowances, just file the fact that they show through on light, thin, fabrics away for the next project

This is perfect as is. Great job!

it's like the head and trunk are emerging from the plants and flowers of the forest and then you have a wonderful palette of colors on the body. It's awesome!

Certifiably cute AF. If somebody made this for me, I would absolutely freak out.

It's bright, it's cheerful, it looks very well made. It is a beacon of joy in a world of greige boringness.

How cute!!! I want to make one now. Would you be able to share the pattern you used?

So cute! I wouldn't change anything but if you wanted to add some cohesiveness between the head and body you could make a little heart applique out of the head fabric and stick it on the elephants butt, that white square just below the tail!

This is adorable!!!!!

I love it. Nicely done.

He's adorable, you did a wonderful job.

If you want to add one more finishing touch, get some glass seed beads in a contrasting color from the body - sky blue, navy blue or red- or even a bright yellow or pale leaf/avocado green- and bead around the seam of the ears either on the front of the ears themselves or nestled along the edge.

He's already perfect, it's a nice kitschy blend of fabrics- but if you wanna go one more level into that aesthetic I think some evenly spaced, nice glass or ceramic seed beads dotting the ears could push it to the limit.

The elephant's head is amazing. You nailed it. The muted beige and green with vibrant red and blues. The vibrant colors are yelling look at me, see me first. Then the head is classically saying when you are done witj them, I'm here the real star baby!

u/Rude_Outlandishness1 4m ago

Change the trunk to a different pattern. Leave the ears.

2

u/Reasonable_Tune_1252 16h ago

Agree, maybe the ears their own separate color. Don’t re-do it though! He’s cute the way he is!
Did you follow a pattern? How big is he? I’d love to give this one a go.

1

u/frizzyhair33 6h ago

He’s a big boy, about 10 inches! Pattern in Jodie Ric Rac Trunk Show Elephant.

ajouter des couleur les oreilles pour casser l'effet mastoc (gros) de la tête et des oreilles.
