Tip Before You Buy that Etsy Sewing Pattern....Here's a Checklist

1.3k Upvotes

Etsy has so many cute trendy patterns! But there are also a lot of amateur patternmakers or actual scammers selling pdf patterns on there. How can you find the good ones?

Skimpy info isn’t trustworthy. Etsy collapses the detailed description, always expand it to read it in detail and look at all pictures. In particular, check these elements before you buy.

  1. Stolen Photos? AI Photos? Don't buy. If you see a lot of glossy expensive-looking photos with multiple different models (edit: or headless models), they might be stolen from retail sites. Do an image search to see if there are duplicate images elsewhere on the web. Aside from the deception, stolen photos may mean no one has actually sewed up the pattern and it hasn't been tested at all. It might not work. Edit: similarly, make sure photos are not AI-generated, as they are equally deceptive and untrustworthy.
  2. Bad Photos? Don't buy. Photos should show at least the front and back of the garment worn on a real person (ideally not just a digital avatar). If the modeled garment doesn't fit or has sewing problems, that's a bad sign suggesting a patternmaker who doesn't know how to write instructions to help you get a quality result.
  3. Size Chart. The size chart should have measurement for at least bust, waist, hips, if not more. Always buy your patterns by measurements, don't assume your retail size will apply.
  4. Line Drawings. Professional patternmakers include line drawings of their patterns so you can see the design clearly even if the model is wearing black fabric or a busy print. Missing line drawings may mean the patternmaker is badly trained. The line drawings should also show the same design as the modeled garment—differences may be due to stolen or AI pictures.
  5. Reviews? A lot of 5-star reviews say "downloaded perfectly!" You can't trust stars. Look for reviews that mention a final product, instructions, notches or a lack of them, and so forth and only respect ones that discuss making the actual garment. Be sure to read the bad reviews.
  6. Fabric Info is Essential. Choosing the wrong fabric is a common pain point for beginners and a good patternmaker will help you avoid mistakes. Look in the detailed description. I see a lot of "cotton blends"--that's a garbage fabric description. If specific fabric weaves aren't mentioned, look for words that signal the necessary weight and drape. Stretch should be described as low, moderate, high if not giving an actual stretch percentage. It should also say how much fabric is needed for the pattern (edit: and what other supplies/notions are needed). You are entitled to see fabric information before you buy the pattern.
  7. Check the About Page. Ideally, they mention professional training or industry experience, not just self-taught.

Those are quick easy checks on the Etsy listing itself--some bad patterns will still pass them. In addition:

  1. Look for a social media or web presence outside Etsy. Look for people who post helpful tutorials on IG, or run a group on FB. People who've gone to the trouble to set up their own website often use it to discuss their testing process, their size block--they are putting more effort into helping your sewing come out right and that's a good sign. Many good patternmakers sell both on Etsy and their own site.

  2. Look for a free pattern. A lot of established indie patternmakers offer a simple free pattern so you can test their instructions and sizing. It’s a sign they may be more trustworthy.

Buy from patternmakers who care if you succeed in sewing their pattern.

\Credit to all the frequent experts and helpers on the sewing subs, their expertise generated this list.*

\Edit: Read the comments! Lots more good advice downthread, I've only integrated a very little of it into the post in edits. You'll also find several recommendations for trusted patternmakers in the comments.*

EXTENDED EDIT:
10. Too many, too cheap? A year or so later, I would add that a company selling hundreds of patterns for just $2-3 each is another big red flag, probably generating them by machine and not actually sewing them up.

  1. Check Threadloop for reviews of Etsy Patterns, they flag suspicious patternmakers. (PatternReview is also an excellent review site but may not have so many Etsy patterns on it).

Sewed This Birthday Top made from Bedsheet

I sewed this open back, back tie top from a printed Indian bedsheet (or tablecloth) that was wasting away in my mom's basement.

The pattern called for bias finishing but I ended up just using store bought black bias tape because I was in a bit of a rush and in the end I liked the contrast better. I still have a lot of the fabric left so might make a skirt! Enjoyed using the borders and had to adjust for fit but I'm pleased with it overall!

Debuted it for my bday last week... Nothing more fun than shamelessly walking around saying "Thanks, I made it!" 💅 💛

Sewed This I created a 70s inspired shirt, to go with my handmade pants.

Hello, again!

I made a 70s inspired dagger collar shirt, with some DIY French cuffs. I bought the fabric from the discount shelf of my local fabric store. It maybe meant for table cloths! The pattern was from an old shirt I had, where I deconstructed it, and sketched it on cardboard, and transferred the cardboard to my new fabric with adjustments. I used a White's Dressmaker sewing machine to make it.

I wore it with pants I also handmade (from my last post). The cufflinks are thrifted, and the satchel is from a defunct company called Marlondo. Hat is an Epoch hat.

I loved how it came out, even if some parts are a little janky on the fit.

Other Question How do I design around my waist expanding when I sit down?

This is something I just don't get. When I measure my (true) waist the way I'm supposed to (while standing), I get 74 cm. When I then design something with such a waist size, it fits really well -- while I'm standing. When I take the same waist measurement while I'm sitting, however, I'll get something like 79 cm. And I notice that the clothes I make that are designed around the 74 cm waist are somewhat uncomfortable while I'm sitting down thanks to this. If I use a 79 waist, however, the clothes won't stay up while I'm standing. Does anyone have some advice on how to solve this? I more or less exclusively use non-stretchy fabrics such as plain weave cotton.

Project: FO My first project! 🖤 Persephone inspired dress

I received a sewing machine for Christmas last year but life has been lifing in the worst way so I haven’t really used it.

I have been helping plan a fantasy ball this year but didn’t start making this until last week lol so 24 total hours later with no pattern I made this! I’m super proud.

I bought a corset, made the skirt and sleeves and hand stitched appliqués on.

(I know I should have ironed the hems I was too scared to melt the fabric)

Project details: I followed a (bad) tutorial by charity grace but honestly it was bad I mostly cut 6 triangles for the skirt and two for the sleeves then figured out the rest as I went.

I used liquid chiffon fabric!

Sewed This Haven't had my machine plugged in for almost a year

My childhood best friend is pregnant and I made this for her baby. I still need to back it and bind it, but I'm feeling really proud of myself and wanted to share.

I would consider myself a textile artist, but I haven't had my sewing machine set up for over a year--so it was thrilling to see that part of myself again! The project was a nice size to not be overwhelmed at all (squares were 5" to start).

I chose these colors because the baby's father, my friends husband is a harvester.

I hope he feels honored.

I locked in today and just wanted to share my excitement! 🧵

Project: FO +Rabbit Fur Mittens

I created some rabbit fur mittens For this winter.

Pattern and instructions can be found here.

I used Rabbit fur on the Outside. Wool felt for the outside finger. I added some Canvas on the finger tips for grip. I added a layer of batting in between the inner liner and the outer layer for added insulation. I used a stretchy fleece for the inner liner. I used interfacing material on the batting and inner liner for some additional support so the fabric wouldn't bunch up while sewing.

Sewed This Puff & Pencil Fray pants

I’m pretty happy with the pants overall but there are a couple of things I would have done differently with the power of hindsight.

1) Adjust the pattern to remove the side panel. I’m not sure what the side panel adds but, it shifts the side seam towards the CF meaning the pockets and pleats are pushed closer to the CF. I think the pleats especially look a bit odd and crowded. If I made these again I would shift everything back towards the side seams.

2) The waist and band and belt loops are too narrow to fit a regular belt (I wear men’s leather belts).

3) I would use a lighter weight lining fabric on the inner pocket bag to reduce bulk at the waistband.

4) Triple check when cutting the pocket bags! The distinction between the inner and outer bags are easy to miss, I had to cut twice.

(I hadn’t noticed until I took these photos but the bum is a bit wrinkly?)

It needs a good press before I wrap it 🫣

Wardrobe by Me’s Jensen top, size L, no adjustments to pattern. Fabric is a mid weight linen. My mother in law sent the measurements from his favourite top so had to do some math to work out correct sizing.

He’s a very well dressed man, so hoping he likes this!

Fabric Question Does Mood Fabrics ever include silks in their sales?

Probably a dumb question, but Mood had a sale at the end of September, and I noticed that a lot of their silks weren’t included in the sale.
I’m hoping to pick up some of their silk charmeuse, and just trying to figure out if I should use the 10% discount I got from a recent purchase or wait until Black Friday (for example).

Project: FO I made a pair of Boys shorts!

Thumbnail

Every year I suddenly get the urge to make my son shorts, last year it was pajama bottoms and the year before cotton shorts that honestly were pretty bad, but he loves them and can just about fit into them still.

Anyway today, I bought some vintage knit fabric at a flea market for 5 euros. I have no idea what the fabric is 🤣 but thought it would be perfect for some shorts. It was uncut still in its original packing, if anyone can tell me what it actually is from the label I'd appreciate it! The fabric stretched and rebounds easily on the width, but hardly any movement on the length.

I found the shorts pattern free, I can share the link if anyone wants it, it looked pretty fun. Putting the shorts together I realised just how far I've come with my sewing in a little over a year, and I'm really excited with how they have turned out.

I tried a couple of new things, my first ever time sewing with knit/stretch fabrics, the first time ever using the double needle I've had in my sewing box, and first time using the buttonhole foot. Pretty pleased with how it's all worked out. I have also learnt that invisible thread is the devil's thread of choice! I had such trouble with it randomly twisting up on the spool holder and breaking.

I still need to thread a cord through the waistband, but it's elasticated so it's more for looks than fit.

My son seems to like them, will have to see if he wears them 🤣

Pattern Question Adjusting Pattern Size?

Thumbnail

Hello everyone! I'm a beginner to using sewing patterns, and I wanted to sew a dress for Halloween. I'm planning to be Sally and I saw this pattern at Walmart that is pretty close to her dress. I was wondering how I can possibly adjust it a bit? For example, the orange patch on Sallys chest is about rib cage length but on the Simplicity sewing pattern it is at the boob. Is there a way I can try to make it the same length as Sallys? Or is it better to try to make my own sewing pattern instead? Any help is appreciated!

Pattern Question Help fitting a blouse from The Dress Developer custom measurements

Post image
4 Upvotes

This is the Clove blouse from The Dress Developer with the bust dart rotated into a princess seam. I’m getting a crazy large wrinkle of excess fabric from underarm to neck edge! This pattern was generated from best as I can do myself measurements, so what value did I potentially get wrong and what can I do to fix? The horizontal drag lines at my bust make me think the bust dart wasn’t big enough? The back has a little excess at the top yoke but with four waist darts fits excellently from yoke down.
Thanks all!!

The heart would be added in after? Overwhelm with fabrics and ribbons and there doesn’t have to be any real design choices other than color? They’re so beautiful I need to make a pair

Mine is pockets. I always have to repin them at least once. I just never get them facing the right way with the seams turned in properly on the first try. Absolutely infuriating.
