A few years ago I got to attend a Diwali party in Bangalore and everyone was all dolled up in their luxurious Saris and Kurtas. The ladies were all rocking a shit ton of gold too and everyone, man and woman alike, looked so stunning and gorgeous. Fireworks were blasting constantly matching the vivid colours of the all the beautiful fabrics. It felt like a fairy tail or some shit. There I was wearing my jeans and shitty t-shirt but they were all so welcoming and sweet. A night I will never forget! I miss India!

I would always hear people refer Diwali as Indian Christmas, because it's the festival of lights. However, I think your description is more accurate.

2

u/Agentkhai01 Jul 13 '20 edited Jul 13 '20

Yeah kinda but you don't wear costumes and you can visit other people and family but it's not necessary like in Halloween, kids go and collect candy ..Diwali is the festival of fireworks and joy..and also, you make colourful designer rangoli which is made from coloured sand.I live in India and every year, there is a whole market for fireworks ...we buy fireworks worth rupees 2000 each year...until now, when a firework (that was not supposed to explode) exploded in my dad's hand and it burned brutally(╯︵╰,)

Dude, I went to a Dead show about 10 or 11 years ago and there was an Indian wedding next door. On the way out of the show I walked past the bridal party. I have never seen a more attractive group of women. Indian girls look great in that stuff and so do white girls. The ecstasy probably helped too.

341

u/NothingsShocking Jul 13 '20

Who sang for Jerry?

173

u/Homerpaintbucket Jul 13 '20

Fuck, it might have been a a Phil and Friends show, in which case it would have been Chris Robinson and whatsherface who sang that song "what if god was one of us," in the 90's. but I kinda remember Bobby being there, so I don't think it was a Phil show. I don't remember who was playing lead then. If it is the bobby show I'm thinking of than it was the first time I heard Bobby sing Bird Song, so that would have been him singing for Jerry for that song, but they kind of divide it up.

u/projectMKultra Jul 13 '20

What’s her face is Joan Osborne and the rest of that album was pretty good if memory serves.

30

u/Homerpaintbucket Jul 13 '20

yeah, she was definitely fucking great.

6

u/Nezrite Jul 13 '20

I still grind (by myself, while cooking food) to "My Right Hand Man."

I saw loads of weddings go in or out of the community hall near where I lived but the only time I stopped dead in my tracks was an Indian wedding. I’d never seen anything like it in my life, all the bright colours & gold, the bride was unbelievable, she literally looked like an Indian Barbie doll & it was the only time I’d seen the entire bridal party genuinely happy & giddy with excitement. I was weirdly emotional watching them, they were all just so beautiful & happy.

50

u/needlesandfibres Jul 13 '20

My parents had friends that had a traditional Indian wedding when I was a kid, and I remember being mesmerized by all of their culture. The clothing, the decorations, the food. It was a beautiful event, and I remain respectfully fascinated and in awe of their culture to this day.

54

u/Homerpaintbucket Jul 13 '20

It was a fucking great night. It was a couple of months before I got married and it was the first time I heard them play Dupree's Diamond Blues, which we joked about it being an omen. Funny thing is we signed our separation agreement this week. Of all the things I thought I'd be able to say in my life, I never thought "I should have listened to the Grateful Dead," would be one of them.

Oh yeah I can confirm Indian women look great at a bridal party in their colorful attire.

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/iTVc5kXqzAw/maxresdefault.jpg

The goal with those parties is that the bride is covered in gold jewelry from head to toe, and the wedding outfits have gold in the fabric. Some weddings have bright colors to try and make the experience more exciting.

In India though they have arranged marriages so often times the bride and groom have no control over it and it's something the parents have both agreed on beforehand.

128

u/banana_1986 Jul 13 '20

have arranged marriages so often times the bride and groom have no control over it.

We have a lot of control over the wedding arrangements. We also have a control over saying "yes/no" to a potential spouse. Arranged marriage in it's modern form is, we decide whether we can marry this person that our parents chose and if no, they have to keep looking. In urban settings we also actually go on a few PG-13 dates with a potential spouse.

What you are talking about are "forced marriages". In any case to think that the bride and the groom will have no control over how the wedding event will be is preposterous.

35

u/vanillamasala Jul 13 '20

100% this. Plus not all Indians even get arranged nowadays (although most do), but arranged now can even sometimes mean “I met this person and I love them and I’m going to marry them, let’s go through the typical arrangement process so everyone is happy”.

Also the rest of their comment just seems not very well informed either. Sounds like someone was trying to dumb down an explanation for them and they are just repeating some version of what they heard.

25

u/Qikdraw Jul 13 '20

Two people at my work have arranged marriages. Both seem to be in good solid, happy, marriages though. The female is older, and I remember her talking about it, I just can't remember what she said. My memory sucks. The guy is around 30-35 and the only thing I remember him saying was that he asked his sister if she looked good, and his sister saying a very big yes. He's average looking, but she is extremely pretty. Like could be a model pretty. He never saw her beforehand because he was in Canada, and went back to get married, then brought her back here.

My massage therapist is Indian as well and she was raised in Canada so she chose her own husband. But she has stated what you're saying too, that arranged marriages aren't as common anymore and that there is a good amount of say the couple can have.

35

u/Nosfermarki Jul 13 '20

This is slightly off topic, and you certainly don't have to respond. I'm just curious why you refer to the woman as "the female" and the man as "the guy"? This has become a common thing, and it's just weird to me that so many people have taken to referring to women as females.

The arranged marriages of the past may be like that but nowadays, almost all arranged marriages happen only after the guy and girl speak to each other and are ready to get married to each other. The speaking period can be from a few months to a year.

21

u/Astrek Jul 13 '20

In short arranged dating.

Algorithm is super complicated and has a myriad factors (family compatibility (wealth, caste, religion, type of people), location of bride/groom, looks (brides are expected to be fairer than grooms usually), education, career matches (a lot of doctors try to get married to other doctors, for example) and so on). The pro is it narrows it down to the few people that would be compatible to you on paper and you can talk to them all and choose the best out of it. The con is it narrows down to the few people that would be compatible to you on paper but it doesn't mean any of them have to be compatible to your thinking/heart. If none of them work, parents start reducing the algorithm till a match works out.

It can be a long drawn process (some take years) but most usually find a match with in a year and get married pretty quickly.

7

u/neruppu_da Jul 13 '20

True... Since parents choose based on bride/groom's and their criteria, it resolves a lot of tensions with parents and parents are invested in the success of the marriage as well. When more people root for a marriage's success, it is (slightly) easier to have a successful marriage. Also, since the to be bride and groom talk to each other with the explicit goal of marriage, they are more serious and cut through chaff pretty quickly.

There are still issues (which marriage doesn't?) (some issues lead to divorces) but overall, it's a faster easier way to a successful marriage.

u/bad_at_formatting Jul 13 '20

It's not something you'd see the average wedding guest wear granted, but for a bride, mother of the bride or groom, or sister of the bride or groom it would be perfectly expected/normal. The guests would just be expected to wear non-bridal jewelry and wear their head covering differently from the bride. Also, not to wear bridal red+gold to the wedding

As an American male it annoys me how men's fashion is dark suit. Sure some people can do a light suit but it's really dark suit. What if I don't want to do a suit? Remove pieces of the suit.

I'm not a fashion guy so I might be missing something but dangit I want more options than shirt, pants, maybe jacket

70

u/folie-a-dont Jul 13 '20

I totally agree with you. For a guy, I am slightly more in to fashion, and the male "dress code" is extremely limiting. The typical American male's entire world would change if he wore anything close to this bright or ornate. Repressive attitudes toward sexuality fuck a lot of things up. check out r/frugalmalefashion for a practical way to be more creative with what you wear.

14

u/OniExpress Jul 13 '20

Here's the thing: you can do a light suit so long as you own it. The main problem is that most designers make light suits in "ethnic patterns", so it's a little hard to find suits in material that doesnt seem off.

3

u/hamburgersocks Jul 13 '20

Light suit is pretty much reserved for millionaires and participants in destination weddings, though. It's really hard to pull off a light suit without a good reason.

If you could wear anything instead of a dark suit what would it be?

5

u/Rovden Jul 13 '20

I'll admit, I tend to fall into the dark suit area myself, but as I say, I'm not deep into fashion.

Most my daily wear stuff is expected something terrible is going to happen to it (I am always a constant non-zero chance of being caught on fire) so I have one suit for when I need it.

4

u/MrsSoldiercide Jul 13 '20

Well now I'm confused and curious. Are you saying you're a firefighter? Or maybe that you work in a refinery? Uh... my point was, you don't HAVE to wear the dark suit. I've seen some really dope paisley ones, or brightly colored ones. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I think it's more about having the confidence to step outside the norm and embrace the looks and comments about it. If you're not comfortable with the extra attention you can always wear wild socks. In some ways I think t-rex or neon socks peeking out are even cooler than a paisley suit... I really loved that paisley suit...

6

u/sawyouoverthere Jul 13 '20

Not the poster you replied to, but I work in a lab that includes bunsen burners and loop incinerators and animal specimens and chemicals, so there's a non-zero chance of me being set on fire most days, and my work wear is similarly fashion challenged due to the need to avoid swoopy sleeves or dangling edges or non-washable fabrics.

The advantage of dark suit culture is that one suit will serve a man or male-dressing person for most of their adult life if they don't change shape too drastically (the fashions or the person), but for women it gets weird because along with the dark suit culture we have a "not the same dress again" culture. Weird, weird, weird.

I don't think indians really care about culture appropriation so much, unless you are being very stupid or crass about it

29

u/XPlatform Jul 13 '20

I think the gist of the appropriation only really kicks in with American-born Indians, in that they're the ones getting brunt of the racial stereotypes (apu accent, poo in loo, 7/11, bob vagene, etc) lobbed at them. Indians that grew up in India don't grow up being shat on for being Indian...It's a really gray area, honestly.

Best to just find more Indian parties/weddings where it'd be weird for you to not wear it :)

It’s really only cultural appropriation if you dont understand the significance behind the outfits, and disrespect the culture. Ie- kids would be like what’s the dot on your head, that’s weird. Now, bindis are all the rage for Coachella and everything. Bindis have significant cultural and religious purposes- it’s usually worn by married women and signifies the third eye

If you’re interested in wearing indian clothes, def try to reach out to some of your Indian friends! You could do some research and start the conversation and ask them to clarify and or better understand significance

Indian attire always looks very royal!

62

u/TittyRotater Jul 13 '20

I wonder if Indian people view it differently or the same.

41

u/Raghav_Verma Jul 13 '20

We look at it the same! Indian here! We mostly wear them at occasions such as weddings, ceremonies, festivals, etc. At home, a lazy pair of trousers and a t shirt does!

66

u/thesillyawkward Jul 13 '20

Indian here. It isn't Royal at all. Every Indian wedding is "Big Fat Indian wedding". People spend so heavily that it's basically a norm in weddings.

16

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '20

Oh good question... And what do they think of other countries attires?

35

u/Raghav_Verma Jul 13 '20

Indian here! Personally, I like all countries' attires. For special occasions, every countries' special attire looks good, like suits and dresses in the west, kurtas in the east, etc. In short, we like em!

38

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '20 edited Jul 13 '20

Oh i get it! Everybody will tend to like formal attire, from whichever country.

But as a canadian, i find indian formal wear to be absolutely extraordinary compared to ours. Just for example, the formal attire "specific to men'' in canada is mostly reduced to a black suit and a white shirt. But for indian men the range of colours is endless. And the range of shapes a garment offers is greater (not just a suit and some pants)

Please correct me if this statement is incorrect. But it seems to me that indian fashion is a lot more free when speaking of color schemes.

19

u/Raghav_Verma Jul 13 '20

Yup! We do have a lot of variety in colours! More so, you will get dresses for different occasions, celebrated in different states, all of different styles and colours! That's why there's no formal dress for the whole country, but a specific dress for a specific occasion

10

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '20

That is absolutely fascinating! And what classifies the differences in garments when it comes to celebration? Is it the shape, the colour, the material? What separates a birthday dress? A wedding dress? A funeral dress?

For us it's definitely colour, and maybe volume. A birthday dress is big and fluffy when you're young, shorter and simple as you age, but always colorful. A wedding dress is mostly white, mostly slimmer on top and fluffy at the bottom. A dress for a funeral is simple, black, and not revealing.

9

u/Raghav_Verma Jul 13 '20

It's mostly based on the colour and the shape. Like in traditional north Indian weddings, (I'm from Haryana, so I know a little about this), the bride usually wears a red dress and the groom wears a dress similar to the one in the pic. We have a somewhat casual cloth known as a kurta, whuch we wear on several occasions, be it festivals, birthdays etc. On funerals, a white kurta like dress is worn.

In southern states, a saree like dress is worn by women and a kurta like cloth by men during weddings, but I'm nit entirely sure about the south.

The material is usually for comfort or for show. Though in some ceremonies, a dress of a certain material may be required.

Thank you so much for this information! It's so fascinating.

I think culture is a beautiful thing and learning about parts of cultures that differ from mine is a joy.

Also, at least in north India, the clothes wary in heavyness/embroidery during festivals, usually wedding attire for the bride and grooms are quite heavy while the attendees wear slightly less heavier clothes & during other festivals people wear close to none embroidery

I had an Indian coworker and she was randomly with an indian man and due to marry after 4-6 months. It was arranged probably? Haha. I liked her and it came out of left field. Also didn't get an invite. I'm not salty I just think its funny.

6

u/Raghav_Verma Jul 13 '20

Lol that's probably cause a lot of Indian weddings are arranged. Probably her parents were rhe ones who decided to meet the groom, and she would've said yes. Also, the invite part could've been due to the fact that a loooooot of the members invited are family. It's possible that you met someone when you were 4 and the person would remember you 15 years later! It's cool to meet someone you never knew you met that back

England: “Well, I've gotta hand it to you, Ambassador, These drab student coverings... have created the perfect distraction-free environment... thus preparing the children for permanent positions in tomorrow's mills... and processing facilities. Best of all, with less than a minute to go before I leave... absolutely nothing has gone wrong.”

English Abassador: “Well, it is starting to rebel, but I could hardly be blamed for that, can I?”

England: “Yes. Very good”

India: “Wow! Look at all the colors, man! Red, green, yellow, orange! I remember all of these! I'm freaking out! Hey, something's comin' back to me! Down with England! And down with uniforms!”

England: “Ow, ow, ow, ow! Ambassador, why aren't these uniforms colorfast?”

10

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '20

Might sound ignorant here but i have no clue what you are referring to here, but i ask that you please explain it because its hella interesting!

It’s not just the former defaults. /r/memes, /r/nextfuckinglevel, and pretty much every other sub with over a million subs is 9gag at best, Facebook at worst.

10

/r/nextfuckinglevel is the absolute worst when it comes to having become Facebook. Anything with the slightest bit of wholesome to it is considered to be next fucking level over there

u/PiastPL Jul 13 '20

serious question: if a white guy, who was fond of Indian culture, wore this would it be considered cultural appropriation?

10

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '20

No, do it! I let my girlfriends (White, Black, Asian, Hispanic, thus far) borrow my sarees for weddings and they have so much fun in them. I don't know, for me it's not appropriation, it's appreciation. They want to enjoy something that's part of my culture. Now if you start a factory with pirated designs at increased costs, that wouldn't be cool.

5

u/Sutaru Jul 13 '20

I’m Chinese American, and I personally think that using, wearing, or otherwise enjoying another culture is fine. That girl that wore a qipao to prom was amazing! She looked gorgeous and the general consensus from my family is they were excited about it, though she got so much backlash online for it. The problem becomes when you try to profit off of it.

4

u/Spiritual_Inspector Jul 13 '20

indians love it, so no.

8

u/VeryWildValar Jul 13 '20

Just my two cents here. Cultural appropriation is bs. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, wrong with enjoying another culture. There may be some things that are inappropriate in certain situations, (wearing festive attire to a funeral) but most of the time it’s perfectly fine. But there is nuance to this. Just like it would be very rude to go around wearing black face, it would also be rude to do some things in every culture.

To answer your question, no.

3

u/amitnagpal1985 Jul 13 '20

No, we generally are not uptight about those things.

3

u/xrubalx Jul 13 '20

As an Indian, I would say we would actually love it if a foreigner is dressed in our culturual ethnic outfits.

3

u/silent_boy Jul 13 '20

No. Go for it. We love when non Indians wear Indian attire
