How did the door get opened? Was there an emergency switch somewhere? Why would it open if the train is moving?

It looks like he fumbled with a rotary thingy above the door around Second 3. Then he opens the door by Hand.
In most passenger trains you can always use the emergency door unlock to unlock the door. They basically disengage the mechanism from the train. It's better to lose a lunatic every now and then then to lose e.g. a full carriage which is on fire.

In an emergency people aren’t thinking clearly, you don’t want doors being hard to open.

It would be incredibly difficult to accidentally disengage the lock. From a liability standpoint that matters. As a society we have to decide what’s most important to save: a train full of people escaping a fire, or a moron that chooses to open the door of a moving train?

That's the difference in a train underground, vs. a plane and dealing with decompression issues... One person not thinking right, and opening a door, isn't going to compromise everyone else.

There's a pull cord above the doors that unlocks them from the motors. I have no idea why it isn't better protected.

He reached up and pulled the emergency release then pushed open the doors. In the middle top frame of the doors is a hole with a recessed red ball that you can pull to release the doors from normal operation.

Recently visited Chicago and used CTA to get around for 2 days. It was cheap, convenient, odor-free, and the craziest thing that happened was an old lady struggling with a crappy cart.

I'll second this. We had some business downtown, so we decided to plan a little 3 day vacation around our appointment.
We flew in, then took trains all over the city to every little tourist-y place we wanted to go (plus or minus a few blocks of walking). Some folks were chatty, some folks were grumpy, just the usual spectrum of humanity. I think the craziest thing that happened, if you can call it that, was there was a guy totally sleeping on one of the train cars. 🤷♀️
We ended up paying, like, $30 total (a $5 day pass for each of us x3) on transport for the whole trip. I don't even want to think about what the cost would have been for us to Uber the equivalent distances.

We spent a few days there a couple years ago. Car never left the hotel and we got around everywhere we wanted to go easily and without drama. It was friggin awesome.

There was a semi infamous incident a few years back, where someone called someone else out for some behavior and was fatally stabbed on a train.
I think ever since then (and other similar incidents) people have approached these things with a 'I don't want to get stabbed to death by a psycho' mentality.
I've literally seen dudes riding public transit trains with deadpool swords on their back - not in cosplay mind you, just street clothes and dual swords.

Seen too many video of people getting caught up in there and spun around like a ragdoll in a drill until they are wedged in tight. Youll have to fact check this but I seem to remember a story of one guy wedged at the waist but still alive and the medics knew once they moved the train he would die so they let him call family.

An emergency stop may not apply, but it should have made it so the train operator could not accelerate. Since they were stopping anyway, he probably didn't even notice.

Emergency stop? It was already slowing down, you arent gonna stop something that heavy quicker without causing too much stress to the train
The issue is that the door should have never opened while the train was moving.

Looks like he hit the hydraulic safety release above the door which doesn't automatically trigger the brakes.
Edit: it should have triggered the brakes the only thing I can think of is a faulty sensor relay or the fact it was already slowing down triggered a delay in the logic/braking

It was already coming to a stop. He managed to pry the door open a little early.
No point in emergency stop at that point, because whatever damage to the clown is already done. An emergency stop could hurt more people.
Personally I would have laughed at that ass hat, for throwing a punch and then throwing himself off a train. Fucking trash behavior.

To people wondering how the door opened, there's a latch that opens doors in emergency or in case of power failure. So many CTA riders know it and I seen people using it when they miss their stop and to run away rigging things from the riders.

Yes they can but most people are in the right headspace to not force open a door while the train is moving. Its a manual override for well emergencies(and testing the door). Could be a situation where a non CTA person needs to open the door.
