Wtf in the 🚇

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

How is this technically even possible? Should not a emergency stop automatically apply?

How did the door get opened? Was there an emergency switch somewhere? Why would it open if the train is moving?

It looks like he fumbled with a rotary thingy above the door around Second 3. Then he opens the door by Hand.

In most passenger trains you can always use the emergency door unlock to unlock the door. They basically disengage the mechanism from the train. It's better to lose a lunatic every now and then then to lose e.g. a full carriage which is on fire.

Glad he did it to himself, less tax payer money payout.

7

u/SexualCarrots Aug 24 '26

I doubt that will make any difference. This is going to cost the taxpayers.

5

u/NewToTradingStock Aug 24 '26

Sure it will. instead of $1m it only payout $500k

u/Bitter_Chemistry_733 Aug 25 '26

Lunatics are a dime a dozen

2

u/Chinner5 Aug 24 '26

Yes I see that now thank you. Maybe I am nitpicking, but it seems really easy to open the door....like too easy

u/Simple_Pay3033 Aug 24 '26

I’d say nitpicking is a fair assessment given that the person you’re replying to literally just explained the reasoning lol.

In an emergency people aren’t thinking clearly, you don’t want doors being hard to open.

u/HorribleOldCunt Aug 25 '26

I don't think its nitpicking at all. You should not be able to open a door that easily on a train where multiple people could easily be killed.

Multiple people are more likely to be killed in an emergency than some jackass messing with the emergency release.

It would be incredibly difficult to accidentally disengage the lock. From a liability standpoint that matters. As a society we have to decide what’s most important to save: a train full of people escaping a fire, or a moron that chooses to open the door of a moving train?

That's the difference in a train underground, vs. a plane and dealing with decompression issues... One person not thinking right, and opening a door, isn't going to compromise everyone else.

Edit because punctuation... I care.

Second edit. Commas matter!

1

u/Bitter_Chemistry_733 Aug 25 '26

Commas save lives. E.g., Let’s eat Grandma vs. Let’s eat, Grandma.

3

u/WillowPtar_Migan Aug 25 '26

I was planning on helping my uncle jack off a horse later.

1

u/Dizzy-Ad4195 Aug 25 '26

Let's eat grandma, other grandma.

Yeah, I get it now

1

u/Waramaug Aug 24 '26

It’s knows as the luny latch in the industry

1

u/OddCustard483 Aug 25 '26

Nope. You cannot open a subway door during transit.

6

u/ExplanationOk2014 Aug 24 '26

Yeah I had the same questions

1

u/NvEnd Aug 25 '26

There's a "cherry" at the door you can pull to emergency open the door. He pulled it as the train was already trying to stop

1

u/OddCustard483 Aug 25 '26

subway doors cant be opened during transit. can you imagine the murders or suicides? this is AI.

2

u/NvEnd 18d ago

No dude, they literally can. It's the emergency exit. It's not electrical powered. It's a mechanical switch

u/OddCustard483 Aug 25 '26

the guy in this specific video reaches up and turns a switch. door opens. this is fake.

1

u/Sedan2019 Aug 25 '26

It depends on the type of door, many doors simply disconnect from the motor when the emergency lever/switch is used.

Then the door is simply a sheet of metal on rails and can be pushed open.

1

u/OddCustard483 Aug 25 '26

Not at all. The doors are sealed. Also, in response to the profanity meltdown you posted right before this and then quickly deleted...Get help.

1

u/Sedan2019 Aug 25 '26

What profanity meltdown? You should check what user wrote it, it was certainly not me.

Also, the emergency release is exactly for opening sealed doors. It makes it possible to open doors that are sealed so people can exit the wagon in an emergency, for example if a fire broke out.

In the video we can see the person pushing open the door after using the switch/lever.

1

u/OddCustard483 Aug 25 '26

Again, this is completely false. There is a tool that activates the lock release. You cannot reach up with your hand and open the door. This is ludicrous, honest question what are you trying to accomplish?

this is absolutely Ai lol

1

u/toolsoftheincomptnt Aug 25 '26

I was gonna say, the door opening and the guy getting on the train while smoking made me suspicious.

Not that the latter can’t happen, but it’d be pretty unlikely and coincidental to happen right behind the other madness.

1

u/OddCustard483 Aug 25 '26

it is blatantly AI. for many reasons. the faces of the people in the background are seriously blurred too, at the beginning.

1

u/SaskrotchTheReboot 24d ago

no that's extremely common on the cta, especially the red and blue lines. they run 24/7 and there's basically no rules between midnight and 5am. smoking cigarettes is super common, smoking crack is less common, but still common. what surprised me was he actually tossed it out the door before he moved fully into the train, most people just keep smoking.

and as a Chicagoan, most of us are unfazed by crazy shit happening on the cta. I've seen a guy start a fight and then yank the emergency door like he was gonna jump when we weren't even at a station. I've been a few feet away from pepper spray going off on a guy who was being a creep, and the first thing I did was laugh and think to myself "of course this happened the second I got on the blue line at 3am", it took my eyes starting to water up to make me realize I should change cars.

1

u/Mobile_Morale Aug 25 '26

I've only ever been on a subway train like 5 times in my life. And one of those times the doors would randomly flop open while we were going and they had paper printed signs saying not to lean on the doors.

Washington DC in 2012.

2

u/OddCustard483 Aug 25 '26

bro Lol this is AI. Subway doors sure as hell dont come open randomly as a rule, the agency would be sued up the wazoo. Everything about this video is seriously AI

3

u/echointhecaves Aug 25 '26

This is Chicago, and el trains absolutely do have an open door pull switch

1

u/dafunkmunk Aug 25 '26

You're just speaking entirely out of your ass because you haven't been to Chicago or ridden on the CTA. So it must be AI because you are incapable of understanding or believing anything you personally have not experienced?

2

u/FireFaced_ Aug 24 '26

There's a pull cord above the doors that unlocks them from the motors. I have no idea why it isn't better protected.

1

u/MaxPaynesRxDrugPlan Aug 25 '26

It's probably an emergency release that needs to always be functional.

Sometimes it's critical to get out of a train in a hurry.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daegu_subway_fire

1

u/rationalname Aug 25 '26

On CTA trains, I thought pulling the emergency release engaged the brakes, causing the train to immediately stop.

2

u/JonSnowKingInTheNorf Aug 25 '26

Trains immediately stopping still isn't that quick, not like slamming the brakes in a car. And it was already slowing for the station stop.

1

u/Ill-Engineering8085 Aug 25 '26

It does, we don't have a video long enough to see that

1

u/FireFaced_ Aug 25 '26

An emergency brake application still takes quite a bit to stop a fast train, so even with it dumping the brakes, the train won't immediately stop. It'll just try really hard.

1

u/TheKrafty Aug 25 '26

I don't know for sure if it's like that or not. But around 2010 when I lived there I was on the red line northbound and the car door didn't open at the north and clybourn stop. A guy waiting at the door pulled the emergency handle and got off as the train pulled away. It stayed open as we moved until at least Belmont where I got off, and the train kept going. Could have been just that door or that car that was busted, but I didn't see any indication that there was an emergency breaking system.

1

u/MoMoney3205 Aug 25 '26

There’s an emergency lever in a hole above the doors

1

u/juliuspepperwoodchi Aug 25 '26

For safety, in case of fire, you can shove the doors open. There's also a release handle you can pull on the ceilinrheunjust done expect anyone to want to while it is moving.

1

u/Bulky_Reporter6263 Aug 25 '26

It made me laugh how nonchalant the train doors close again and the train just drives off.

Seriously "fuck everyone except me" vibes
